John asks…
How many jobs would mandating alternative energy cars provide? ?
Any sort of reports or facts on it would be useful in terms of infastructure, manufacturing, maintanence, etcetera. Thanks for the help!
The Expert answers:
Compared to not mandating it, zero or possibly even negative.
The jobs you would create from it would mean that jobs aren’t being created in other areas of economy, possibly areas of the economy that could create more jobs than trying to replace the best transportation fuel with something likely to be inferior (as much as we may hate oil and the global warming it contributes to (though it’s not the biggest cause) it is the best fuel for transportation).

What should I major in in college if I want to get a job developing alternative energy technology?
I’d like to get a job helping to develop alternative energy sources like wave, tidal, and geothermal energy, but I’m not sure what the best college major would be for a field like that. Any suggestions?
The Expert answers:
Physics/Physical Chemistry, you would likely need to get a master’s and a PhD after your undergrad where you would do your thesis and doctoral work in the specific area you were interested in.

Laura asks…
High paying jobs in the alternative energy industry?
I can see alternative energy sources as being the future for United States energy consumption as gas and oil prices fluctuate drastically. I am currently 18 and am going to join the military so I can have a lot of my college paid for. Currently I have 10,000 stashed away in gold investments and mutual funds that i was going to put towards my 401k. Anyways I was wondering which alternative energy has the most money in it (six figures)? What jobs in the alternative energy industry can I go into with only a bachelors degree in college that will give me six figure potential? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I live near Sweetwater, Texas and wind energy is really big around here. I don’t know how much money is in it though.
The Expert answers:
As far as college goes, mechanical or electrical engineering will probably help the most in terms of jobs in non-traditional energy. Traditional oil and gas is more geology-focused.
Any kind of four-year engineering degree will get you six figures after enough experience.
There are some wind farms going up in the middle of Texas, I forget where. It’s one of T. Boone Pickens’ projects.
Keep your money in gold and mutual funds or index funds; don’t get crazy with it.
