Your Questions About Green Living

Paul asks…

Was the “cash for clunkers” program an experiment for future “Eco-incentive” programs to come?

eventually we will need to reduce our oil consumption by at least half sometime in the next 50 years I don’t think it’s possible without having the government offer a financial/tax incentive because we have capitalist free trade that doesn’t seem to be conducive to cultivating expensive Eco friendly industry. It’s just cheaper to go with the status quo. business is not going to double or triple there cost to make eco friendly products. I checked the price for some biodegradable silverware and it was 5-6 dollars for a 25 piece set when i can go to walmart and buy a 48piece set for $1.35
the 48 piece set was plastic my point is it’s simply more economical for business to simply buy cheap stuff instead of spending more for eco friendly products.

The Expert answers:

Cash for Clunkers was okay, but I’d hate to see other programs based on it. For one thing in this economy, many are not going to be able to afford the cars they bought and they will default on their loans. We can’t afford another bailout.

I doubt this Cash for Clunkers was eco-friendly, all the cars traded are now going into the landfill all at once. These cars could have been given to low-income and down and out families who need transportation to get to work.

And the way it is now, all the car dealerships who participated in this are on the hook for millions of dollars, because the Government is being slow and stupid, in paying out the money they were going to reimburse the dealerships.

George asks…

Where can I find fashionable, eco-friendly carry-on luggage?

My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up. He is a pilot and also very eco-conscious. (…Yes, I know it seems ironic.) He’s been toting around the same old smelly, noisy carry-on for years and I’d like to buy him something that is (A) environmentally friendly, (B) soft-sided but somewhat structured, and (C) not totally frumpy. Sleek or sporty would be ideal.

I’ve looked into a lot of the obvious solutions (Heys, American Tourister’s eco collection, Eco-traveler), but none seem to be exactly what I’m looking for. I like Patagonia’s travel gear, but I didn’t want to get him a rolling backpack or duffle without structured sides. I found a few nylon carry-ons on the REI website, but couldn’t find info. on how they’re waterproofed/whether they’re PVC free.

Does anyone know where I could find manufacturing info on luggage that does not necessarily advertise itself as ecofriendly?

Any suggestions on brands, products, and materials will help. Thank you!

David asks…

I am the new owner of a product complete with website. How do I change ownership and manage the site?

It is an Ecofriendly product successfully sold via the already established website. I would like to manage the website myself, bring it up to date, and make a few changes. If you are experienced in running a business via the internet, can you help me, please. This is something I have never done before and I want to continue the success of the business. Hope you can help. Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Find out if the site is registered with Nominet (they hold the domain names) and transfer it to yourself through them. Also i would go into a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program and change the password so that only you have control of what is uploaded onto your site. The previous owner should have passed this info on to you.
Promotion is the key word here (you did not promote your site!) so get as many people as possible to your site. One see’s the site, but tells two.

Mary asks…

Have you considered or bought the new Graco Eco-Friendly crib?

Graco debuted a new crib – Dakota EcoFriendly. Here is the information on it:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d…

If you have bought this or looked into it, what are your thoughts? I would love to get some feedback as our WalMart does not carry it and I am leary of purchasing a crib sight unseen.

The Expert answers:

The link doesn’t work 🙁

It sounds awesome. We just bought a crib today otherwise I’d consider getting it if my walmart had it.
