Your Questions About Green Living

Mandy asks…

Has anyone had a bad experience with eco-friendly laundry detergent?

I tried it, and it bleached white spots on all my clothes, even when they were turned inside out.
This is what I get for trying to be ecofriendly…(the stuff is expensive, too!!)

If you use an eco friendly detergent and it works, what is it?

George asks…

Yoga pants style? hippie kind of style?

Ok im not really sure this is going to make any sense but… im trying to reinvent my style and i dont really know the style im trying to get. You know the kind of women who wear yoga pants have long hair (sometimes) look like they are always going to yoga class but look stylish not frumpy but are like vegan…ha ha i mean not that every vegan dresses alike but you know what im getting at maybe?

I kinda want to say hippie but when i think of hippie i think of groovy tie die shirts and stuff like that. I dont want to dress like that.

Im a crunchy mom who is eco friendly. along with the yogo pants i like to wear i also like sun dresses which kinda playes into the hippiness. anyways what do i call my personal style and what types of clothes should i wear to make my natural, crunchy, hippie yoga style work? also how should i wear my hair Thanks!!

The Expert answers:

Just look up “bohemian”. Often listed as “boho”. Also try “sophisticated” and do an image search. You’ll get loads of ideas.

8. I only use “eco friendly” cleaning products.
9. I recycle as much as possible.

What else could I do?

THANKS!
10. I don’t use the A/C or heater.

Grow some of your own food?

Buy more stuff second hand? I get most of my shirts, books & DVDs second hand and sell them when I’m done with them.

Renewable power? If you can afford it and you live in a place that is good for it, then solar heating or maybe even electricity, a wind turbine if you live rurally.

Try not to fly.

To be honest, looks like you’re doing better than me!

Thomas asks…

Household carbon emissions?

hey, I’m researching what effect an eco friendly house would have on the environment, and i need some answers. Percentages would be great.

How many gasses ( or what percentage of gasses) would you save using

-solar power and opposed to conventional with micro hydro as a back up?
-Using energy saving light bulbs?
-using natural light during the day?
-using a fire and warm clothes instead of a gas heater?

And how much water would you save using
– a water tank?
-A water saving shower head?
-sensor basins?
-front load washing machine?
-grey water for dishes etc. ?

thanx soo much =D

The Expert answers:

I do know that underneath your kitchen sink is a ton more worse than going down your aisle at the grocery store. Our air inside our homes are 70x worse than outside. It’s a very serious situation. Chemicals seep out through plastic containers of cleaning liquids and such. So all products like this should be replaced. The effects of your house being eco-friendly with no toxins reduces your risk of cancer later in life.

Richard asks…

Tiny itchy red bumps all over face and swollen eyes.. can anyone help?

About a week ago I started using witch hazel on my face. My routine included pouring witch hazel on a cotton ball and wiping it on my face to remove my makeup. Afterward, I would take a shower and proceed with my face wash and moisturizing my skin with Cetaphil lotion after my shower. A couple days later, I noticed some skin irritation on the sides of my nose. By Monday my eyes were very swollen and I developed tiny itchy bumps all over my face that feel somewhat dry to touch. Here is a picture of what I am talking about:

Other then that, possible causes might be because I started using a new laundry detergent. I switched from Tide to an ecofriendly laundry detergent. I should also probably mention that I have bumps caused by an allergic reaction all over my body. However, they are not as severe as the ones on my face, in fact, they are very different to the bumps that are on my face. The bumps on my body are similar to bug bites. I washed everything from my clothes to my pillow cases in this laundry detergent. So that might possibly be a cause or might have added to the problem. I normally have very smooth skin and rarely break out.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? How long will this condition take to go away? Any helpful information is greatly appreciated.

The Expert answers:

Hey

Argh! I hate rashes and that looks like it could be an allergic rash. What i would do is stop using anything on your face for a few days. If you have been using new detergent that is probably what it is and i would stop using it. If this does not start clearing up in a few days i would go get it checked out with a g.p or if it is really annoying you.

Hope this helps

good luck
