Your Questions About Green Living

Betty asks…

Am I spoiled[details below]?

Okay well I live with my boyfriend and he’s being a total jerkface and was verbally abusing me by calling me a spoiled brat, which made me cry! It’s not my fault my daddy loves me and sends me cold, hard cash to spend on myself. I graduated from university last year, so I have a job and my boyfriend is the one who wanted me to move in with him, so it’s not like I have to pay bills or rent. My boyfriend is really abusive because he won’t buy me the 35mm Rolex Yatchmaster in yellow gold but instead he got me the 29mm Yatchmaster in steel and platinum[I know how rude]. It makes me so sad when he won’t buy me what I want and then yells at me when I buy it for myself, even though it’s not my fault. True story: I called the people at Saks and Net-a-Porter and told them not accept my credit card because they’re like a cheap who.re, they steal all my money, but guess what? They still accept my card there! I tried and he doesn’t give me enough credit. I only have:
-an iPhone 4s but I need that to stay connected
-an iPad 2, to read because I am a bibliophile and I use it to read and play angry birds
-4 louis vuittons. The Brea MM was my xmas present to myself and the Alma MM was from my daddy and they’re both from the vernis line which are like a staple so everyone needs one. I have a speedy 35 but like who doesn’t? and the elipse mm but that is such a unique bag, so it’s like investing in art.
-6 paris of Louboutins but they’re quality shoes and they’re worth the price
– A lot of Jimmy Choos but Choos are cheap so whatever
-I have a 2010 Lexus RX hybrid but that is such a modest car, it’s a grandma car and eco friendly so I don’t know why he’s pmsing about that!
Please tell me what you think and feel free to side with me
I know I already asked this but I did not get any serious responses. And btw I have a savings account and I am not in debt , I pay off my credit card every month!

This is a serious response: Yes.

Helen asks…

Can someone who is environmentally and socially conscious justifiably wear leather?

(This is more of a discussion than a question.)

I think it’s not only justifiable; I think it can be a socially and environmentally conscious choice.

I have been a vegetarian for much of my life and I’ve eaten beef in my adult life less times then you can count on one hand. I’ve also always been very conscious of how my decisions impact the environment and affect social issues.

I used to think that wearing leather was counter-intuitive to environmental and scoial integrity. Now I think that the opposite is true.

It started off because I needed gear when I was riding my scooter that would protect me if I fell. Synthetics were very expensive and only came in grades and sizes more suitable to pocket rockets. So, eventually, I relented and bought a leather after about two years of hesitation. Now I also wear leather shoes and boots.

Okay, so here’s why: Leather, as a by-product of the beef industry, is in huge supply. Until people eat about a 1/50 (!) of the beef that they do in North America, there will always be leather that is not from cattle that is purpose bred. In other words, the environmental impact of the livestock will occur regardless of whether or not there is a demand for leather; the impact is driven by the demand for beef. On the other hand, synthetics have a huge environmental impact as they are usually derived from oils. Additionally, even natural fibres – save a few exceptions such as bamboo – can have a large environmental impact. The only additionally environmental impact from leather is from the tanning process, which in North America is highly regulated.

While there is a big push to have clothing sewn in North America, most textiles/ fabric produced in the world – like over 90% – comes from sweatshop conditions where wages and working conditions are poor, very poor. On the other hand, you can purchase leather clothing and footwear that, from beginning to end, is made and manufactured in North America, Australia or any other country where you are comfortable with the working conditions.

Lastly, cattle that is bred dual-purpose – beef and leather – most likely have beetter living conditions then some other cattle. I say most likely because I don’t know that for sure, but cattle that is over-crowded will nip and kick at other animals, rub into fencing and walls and be more susceptible to bites and infection, causing wounding and scarring. Scarring makes the leather less valuable.

Lastly, even when synthetics or natural fibre clothing beats out leather for environmental impact and social impact, leather out-performs synthetics and naturals almost always. For wind breaking, warmth retention, breathability and water resistance (in balance), comfort and protection, leather wins. Most importantly, though, leather will outlast any synthetic or natural fibre by years and years and years. I meet people who are still wearing leather jackets that were manufactured in the 80’s. Synthetics and natural fibres go to the landfill.

So, what do you think? While leather producers would have a hard time selling their product as ecofriendly and socially-aware, is this a fair arguement? Can someone who is environmentally and socially conscious justifiably wear leather?

The Expert answers:

Look as long as you are going to raise and kill beef for a food source you might as will make use of the by products i.e leather to make boots and gloves — myself if i did not eat meat i would still buy leather boots and gloves if they were available since they wear so well!!!

Ruth asks…

I don’t know if i want to Major on Architecture or Int. Design ? Help !?

Well im beginning my Junior Year in HighSchool and its gonna be the year where I have to decide what i want to major on for the rest of my whole long life, and im thinking about Architecture or Interior Design but i still dont actually know which would be better. I’m still thinking about both Int.Design and Architecture because i’m not that big of a scientist or a math geek and i know you have to know alot of math to go for the ones i want. But then again i also wonder if in the Universities they can maybe help you with your math knowledge and maybe you might end up being a good Architect/Int.Design. Well what im trying to say is that im scared, Truelly fully SCARED out of my mind. I really love making model homes, Ive made 2 model homes the past 2 years and the first one was OK but the second one was WOW, it looked modern and it was like an EcoFriendly House, BUT the negative thing about this house was that i didn’t do any measures, so the house had windows in different sides and it was just not measured correct. All this i hope to improve in my next 2 years of a highschool student ( measuring, organizing, etc) to become a more knowlegeable student. I am also really SCARED of not being able to get a Scholarship and end up paying all my College Tuition Costs and becoming in Debt for the rest of my life. Since i retained Algebra 1 for 2 years because i didnt pass my freshmen Year then i had to take it Sophmore year and Im currently Taking Geometry during Summer and its Ok, not that hard or Easy. And i hated Algebra 1 but Geometry is in a way exciting. And Since im not a straight “A” Student im like a “B” or a “C” student (Neutral) and do they still give out Scholarships to people like me that dont get Advanced Grades but Ok Grades ? Please explain anything i can do to ensure my choice of Majoring, and all the things i listed of being SCARED. Please i just want some Honest Answers from other people that also felt this way or was in the same shoes as me in the Past. Thanks Alot, I really Fully Appreciate Your Time.

The Expert answers:

SLO-O-O-W-W down!!! You’re thinking TOO much!!! First, don’t be scared…! Do what you love. Nothing is locked in concrete, even after you start college/art school. One can change their major in the middle if need be. Have FUN with all your classes! Even if you hate a class, go into it with the idea, you will learn something from it, even if it is that you hate that particular medium…go onto the next. College/art school is great and I say that because I only got to go after 20 yrs. After high school. I loved every minute of it and did chang my major in the middle. You have required classes to take, like drawing, printmaking, sculpture, etc., which gives you an insight to many things and areas to which you have to think about in the art world. I took all the classes I thought I’d like after the required ones and they helped me make up my mind on my major. My Bachelor of Fine Arts degree I almost majored in 3 areas: Textiles, Metalsmithing and a minor in Ceramics, then MFA I majored in Textiles. Don’t be so worried about math, most artists are right-brained not left-brained (math & calculating) anyway. You’ll get through it if you look at it with a little more love and not fear. Take a deep breath and relax… Check out the schools you think you might like to attend, maybe go visit and ask lots of questions. I hope this helps to make this easier. Enjoy!

Lizzie asks…

What’s my sexual orientation?

Hello there, can anyone help me realize what my sexual orientation is? I know a lot of people say, who cares, labels don’t matter. But I would really like to know because sometimes people ask me if I have a boyfriend or anything and its so hard for me to explain things to them, that I’m not straight. Like when I meet new friends and I want to tell them, its just that I want to be sure that what I am telling them is correct.

So here are a few things about me:
-all my favorite actors are women
-whenever I see a couple, I’ve realized that I always tend to stare at the woman not the man
-my friends and I have caught myself checking women out (if its a REALLY hot guy, i admire his face)
-whenever my friends say, “omg he’s so hot” whether referring to a celebrity or some guy, its so hard for me to see what they see in him (once again, if he is a pretty boy then I will admire his face)
-I used to fantasize about both men and women, but now I’ve started to fantasize about women like 85% of the time
-from the ages of 5-10years old I used to try to get my friends (all girls) in bed with me (like I would start off by saying, “want to play doctor?” or “want to play mommy and daddy?”) and I had succeeded quite a few times and enjoyed it
-I’ve never had sex with a guy
-at school when we played “house” i would get really jealous when i couldn’t be mommy and daddy with my best friend (especially this one time, a guy said, “you can’t be daddy, you’re a girl. I’m the daddy.” So I got really angry and I ran down the hill and sat behind a bush and started to cry.)
-when I was 6 or 7 years old, everyday after school I would come home and lock the door to the basement and turn on the television and I remember there used to be this gorgeous woman on a show and I would turn off the volume and start to masturbate to her
-and also around that same time, my mom’s friend was getting married and I started to get jealous, so every time she would ask me what I thought of her fiance, I would say that I didn’t like him or the way he looked (I know its rude but I was quite young and possessive of her)
-when I’m with guys, I like the conversation at times but I also tend to get aggressive and act like a feminist

Stereotypical things I’ve noticed about myself:
-I’m a feminist
-I am extremely ecofriendly
-I like wearing plaid (didn’t know it was a lesbian thing, but I still did it)
-Always wear Vans or DC shoes
-Love getting pierced and tattooed
-Have a huge collection of leather jackets
-Wear thumb rings (when I got them I didn’t know that they had any significance to sexuality)
-Sit with my legs wide apart
-Tend to talk with a deep raspy voice even though I don’t smoke (however, I do sing)
-I absolutely love motorcycles (they are my life, but maybe that’s because I come from a family of motorcycle riders)
-Tend to wear guyish clothes because if they are too feminine, I feel awkward
-Enjoy skateboarding

To tell you the truth, I do truly feel like I am a lesbian but something in side of me is saying, if you end up with a man somehow, everyone’s going to hate you for lying to them. And also that part where I fantasize about men at times, I’m pretty sure lesbians don’t do that. So if I call myself a lesbian then other lesbians will get angry because of that.

The Expert answers:

You are a lesbian. Why? Because sweetie, it is so normal for you to feel as though you may end up with a man or to fantasize about a man. Because more than likely you have grown up in a hetero-normative society. Do you remember watching movies when you were young? How many of them portrayed homosexual relationships? So no matter how hard you try, media and your environment will always have an influence on you including your sexual orientation, regardless of whether its 1%, 50% or 90%. So be true to yourself, and don’t let others get to you.
