Linda asks…
Why must there be a sustainable atmosphere for there to be life?
I read for there to be life on a planet, the planet has to be the correct distance from a star, a sustainable atmosphere and certain chemicals. I don’t know why there has to be a sustainable atmosphere.
The Expert answers:
Think about it – if earth were to suddenly be 400 deg F, would we be able to survive? No. Our “sustainable atmosphere” consists of an ideal temperature (among other things I will not mention because I do not want to confuse you too much).

What can Graphic Designs do to become more sustainable?
I am giving a talk to a group of college students soon on Sustainability and how Graphic Designers can strive to make their industry/classroom more sustainable. Any ideas? I have a few but would like as many as possible. I have never worked in industry. Thankyou in advance
The Expert answers:
The first answer is funny to me-
I am a graphic designer myself- but I have always thought it odd that every other designer I come across uses type that is so small the message gets lost.
I, on the other hand use larger fonts and sizes- but then again my career led me more towards fine art and I left graphic design as a field behind.
I agree. Individuality is most important. It is also key to use more color and outside the box thinking. Also individuality. Graphic design gets so static so quickly. The aesthetics of visual art are often lost in good design- and they don’t have to be!

What would be considered a normal or a sustainable birth rate?
I want to compare the high birth rates of china and india, that are very overpopulated to a more sustainable birth rate.
The Expert answers:
That’s like asking how to limit a tree’s growth rate on the assumption that it is already too tall. There is no such thing as overpopulation. Some cities suffer from heavy handed governmental interference making it hard to raise a family, and that has the appearance of overpopulation, but in fact it is a very different sort of problem. “Overpopulation” is a code word used by people who just want to kill something. Sixty years ago when the world population was less than half what it is now, some governments were castrating people to reduce “overpopulation”. China tried to limit families to one baby and the result is a time bomb: not enough wives for all the young men.
“Sustainable” is a nice sounding word, but it has nothing to do with the birth rate. People always have just about as many babies as they want, and when the birth rate drops the country collapses.
