Donald asks…

Eco friendly clothes?

Does anyone know where I can get fashionable clothes that are eco friendly. Also, I don’t want the clothes to cost a fortune, because most eco clothes I see are expensive. So I’m looking for eco friendly, cost effective clothes. Please give me links if you can!

The Expert answers:

Try urban outfitters. They have brands that are eco friendly.

Robert asks…

Who would you recommend for eco friendly affordable clothes?

I don’t want to pay the earth to do my bit so want a reliable source for quality and changing designs and styles.

The Expert answers:

Actually, on both eco-friendly and affordable, absolutely any thrift store is where you ought to be headed. Reuse of what are almost always perfectly good clothes, at prices as little as 10% of new, zero direct impact on the earth (sure, there is indirect impact, they have to have electricity to run those stores nowadays).

After that, any amount of local is best…though hard to find in a lot of countries. But if you can find anything made by the likes of the Amish or other societies that reject much modern technologies, you will find they have grown their own fiber, produced their own fabrics, and sewn the clothes in ways that are very earth friendly.

If you insist on being “fashionable,” well…I could do a whole soapbox about how un-earth-friendly that is, but I’ll leave that to your own judgement. There are some companies out there that do good work with fair trade textiles, and also tend to prefer more earth friendly products…alas, I do not know any company names, so I can’t direct you.

Joseph asks…

modern eco-friendly clothes?

there are a lot of ecofriendly clothes out there, but i’m 16 and still want to dress my age. the stores i know of that are sustainable as well as with the times are american apparel, livity, herbivore clothing, and blend. can anyone direct me towards more stores like these? thanks

The Expert answers:

You can find eco-friendly clothes (and much more) almost anywhere now (depends where you live, and you just have to find the right places to look). If you can’t find crazy, super eco-friendly clothes, at least buy organic/vegan clothing. I’ll tell you right now, it’ll cost more than your average t shirt or jeans. But if you really want to make that change then go for it. You can also try looking for hemp clothing. Look for things that are printed with soy-based ink. Just little things like that are eco-friendly. It’ll be easier to find things online because there might not anything nearby for you to go to and shop there. Also, if you don’t want to go all-out or waste too much, it is also good to buy things that are made in the same country you are from. It might be hard to find something from your own country but there can be a few things. The reason this is eco-friendly is because people and resources from other countries were not exploited to make your clothing. And plus, it is less transportation (meaning less gas/oil). Majority (actually, ALL) of eco-friendly clothes that I have seen out there are still cute and trendy. So you don’t have to worry about not being able to dress your age. Good luck!
