Your Questions About Green Living

Sandra asks…

Where can I find a list of goverment grants provided to an alternative energy company?

I’m currently in the process of starting up a business that manufactures energy efficent homes, and I’d like to find out what types of government funding would be available.

I’ve already checked the Dept. of Energy website and couldn’t find what I was looking for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two FREE sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.

There is a grant called 81.036 Inventions and Innovations http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.SEARCH_PGM_TXT_DYN.SHOW?p_arg_names=prog_nbr_in&p_arg_values=81.036&p_arg_names=keyword_in&p_arg_values=energy&p_arg_names=_title&p_arg_values=

OBJECTIVES:
To encourage the development and commercialization of energy-saving inventions by providing financial and technical assistance to projects that have a potential for significant energy savings and future commercialization markets through a competitive solicitation process.

Applicant Eligibility:
Individuals that are U.S. Citizens, either native-born or naturalized, small businesses that are U.S. Owned as defined in 10 CFR 600.501.

You may want to check this out.

If you need to apply, go to Grants.gov and download the application form for this grant by giving its CFDA number 81.036

Or go to CFDA to see what other energy related grants are available

Ruth asks…

Im considering starting an alternative energy company in the Las Vegas area?

The company would use grass clippings, compost, and other non-edible plant parts and produce cellulosic ethanol. We would also sell units that run on this fuel. The company would collect the glass clippings, etc sort of like a garbage pick up. Where should I start? Money is not an obstacle.

The Expert answers:

How about learning HOW ethanol is produced? When you say money is not an obstacle, I doubt that. You’ll need millions.

William asks…

Where can I get grants/low interest loans to start a biotech/alternative energy company?

I am a recent college graduate.

The Expert answers:

Go to http://www.grants.gov for a list of government grants and how you can apply for them. However, there are no grants for a for profit business unless you are opening a daycare and then it is a minimal amount. If you need money, you will need to apply for a loan. No lender will talk to you unless you provide them with a valid business plan. Go to http://www.sba.gov , http://www.score.org or http://www.bplan.com for sample business plans and instructions on how to write a business plan.

Then, go to http://www.score.org/ and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor to review your business plan and discuss various loan options available to you.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.

Michael asks…

What companies trading on nyse are developing alternative energy sources?

I’m interested for our IRA contribution for 2007.

The Expert answers:

TSL, STP both solar power. For wind power you will have to go pink sheet–VWSYF. Alcohol–on the nasd–PEIX, on the nyse–ADM (I would stay away from those though. A political gimic more than anything else).
