Go Green: Go Local

img5Go green, go local. When you buy anything made within a 100 mile radius of your community you’re casting a wide net of green mindedness. Whether you’re buying from a farmer, carpenter, winery or a coffee shack, using local resources builds the entire community up.

The money you spend stays circulating within your area, keeps small businesses thriving, cuts down on transportation costs to and from the source and pride in the product will show. Local merchants have a positive reputation to nurture if they want to survive so customer care is generally quite a bit better. Go green, go local and stay happy with the quality of products you get. A local farmers’ market is a treasure trove of unique, personal resources. Read more

Charles asks…

What type of engineers work in the field of sustainable energy?

What type of engineers work in the field of sustainable energy? For example solar power energy, wind energy, wave energy, water current energy. Would it be environmental engineering, civil or Mechanical?

thanks
what do you mean bbullough

The Expert answers:

Typically mechanical or chemical… But mostly engineers who work for companies that survive only on government subsidies and tax breaks… ’cause it ain’t sustainable.

Linda asks…

How much more sustainable timber cost more than timber from unknown source? ?

I am doing a survey on how much more sustainable timber sources cause, and am trying to make a statement that some of these may be green opportunists who jack up the price, riding the green wave. I need to make a fair comparison with facts to support…. please help if you know if any webpage or you have data to help me with.
Yah, is there any data to support my hypothesis that many of the suppliers are exploiting ‘green’ as their value-adding factor, their selling point?

The Expert answers:

Generally you come to a conclusion after looking at the evidence.

Michael asks…

If green energy production is cheaper and more sustainable why do energy suppliers charge extra price for th?

Despite all energy supplers being fed into the national grid, suppliers such as Eon want to charge a premium if you wish to opt for green produced electricity.i,e.wind,wave or hydro.

The Expert answers:

It is not cheaper and producers now do not care if it is sustainable, that will only matter when we use up other fuels.

John asks…

What the hell is wrong with Sustainable energy commercials?! You can’t put a windmill in your gas tank!?

One I heard started out like this…

500 billion dollars are being spent and taken out of america every year for oil…

Then it says the wave of the future is here…then it shows windmills and solar panels…WTF?!

Dose that make any since? I mean somebody who was making that commercial probably spent enough time working on it to know that you can’t go from trying to find an answer to oil to freaking windmills and solar planels!

Is this just to trick americans into thinking there IS a freaking replacement for oil?

So why show them?

The Expert answers:

Electric cars.
And cheap sustainable energy = solar and wind energy.
Hybrid cars are half way there already.

Carol asks…

Is wind power/ hydro power really a good idea?

I’ve been researching this idea for a while now, and I’d like some other opinions. Based on physical laws, energy cannot just be made. It has to come from somewhere. By harnessing wind and waves, we are taking energy from the oceans and from the air. To be clear, wind turbines slow the wind, and hydro power slows the waves. If that happens on a large scale, I think we would have a different eco-problem on our hands other than global warming. The fact that wind cannot spread pollen, or push clouds where they need to go. And the waves wont spread plankton and other microscopic neccessities, and it could alter key ocean currents on the planet. Is this a valid arguement? It seems that fission or fusion might be our only hope for sustainable energy.

The Expert answers:

They’re not a bad idea on an individual basis, but they’re not too reliable yet and shouldn’t be taxpayer funded. Geothermal energy is the best in my opinion, while it won’t give you any electricity it provides a basically free way to heat or cool your home. Where I am it gets very cold and I wish I had it here.

Don’t worry over the effects of generating power. Anything that happens as a result goes back to normal in seconds. Windmills will not slow the wind at all, just capture some of the energy while it flows by. To generate hydro power you need a dam, and they’re always built on rivers. In the St. Lawrence river there is a huge one. The company that constructed it also built ‘fish ladders’ so that marine life wouldn’t be affected in their swim upriver for spawning.

Nuclear power is still the cleanest overall and the most reliable.

What is an environmental issue that has been going on February-March 2011?

This can be anywhere. And please don’t say the one about japan or hawaii because i already got those ones! 🙂 This has to have happened BEFORE THE DATE OF March 9th 😀 thanks so so much!!

The Expert answers:

… Hm.

Well, pollution itself is always a problem… Worldwide.
And global warming.

Thomas asks…

Can someone help me find a few articles from the New York Times?

I need to find an article from the ny times website on each of these topics.

Mandy asks…

What’s your reaction to this environmental court ruling?

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/may/27/fireworks-shows-need-environmental-review/

In a nutshell, environmentalists won a court case, which could put an end to a lot of 4th of July fireworks, and even put more regulations on birthday parties held at parks.

Environmentalists want fireworks organizers to submit to an environmental impact study before the government issues a fireworks permit.

Since environmental impacts are very costly and take a long time, there could be a lot of cancellations of fireworks shows.

Your thoughts?
Should we sacrifice a 200+ year tradition because of environmentalism?

The Expert answers:

As always California leads the way in protecting us from ourselves. I feel safer already.

Daniel asks…

Is this small paragraph grammatically correct?

The following report covers the meeting held by the ____ Planning Commission on February, 2, 2011, which focused on the topic of _____ Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Natural Resources of the city of _____.
The attendance of a Planning Committee meeting is relevant to an Environmental Science course because city council meetings amend laws, develop policies, and ultimately make decisions that have an effect on the community as a whole. One of the fundamental learning outcomes of Environmental Science is to recognize and evaluate the important environmental issues we face today, and how we as individuals affect the environment, whether it is a major or a minor effect.

***The “_____” the underlining is for private secure information (the city I live in)

Thankies 🙂

The Expert answers:

~there is no comma after “February;” change this to -> “on February 2, 2011”
– I don’t get why you would capitalize the first letters in “Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Natural Resources of the city of ____,” unless if it is a VERY long name of an organization, or something.
– I would just change, “which focused on the topic of _____ Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Natural Resources of the city of _____,” into, “which focused on the topic of _____ parks, recreations, open spaces, and natural resources.” (this also goes with the other “unusual” capitalizations)
~ You don’t need the “Planning” in “Planning Committee meeting” -> “Committee meeting” should be good enough; it means the same thing without further complicating the sentence.

– hmm everything else seems fine, but then again, it’s midnight, and I have a 3 hour test tomorrow:P Maybe I’ll reread your paragraph when I’m NOT lacking sleep (:

~Oh! Also, it’s not grammatically correct to end a sentence in a preposition in this case… Just saying

PS. Sorry, but it’s kind of hard to understand your sentences without actually knowing what you’re talking about, and the structure should depend on the meaning:P

Michael asks…

Alternative energy jobs – what should I study at university to get one?

I would very much like to work in this field. However, not as an engineer or any technical person, I’d rather work with the sales/management part of the business. I am really enthusiastic about environmental stuff, but Physics is my weaker side. Do you think they would hire me if I studied something like Business Management or International Trade? If necessary, would it be sufficient if I learned the technical stuff as a post grad?

The Expert answers:

The best places to learn about this stuff is not at any university. Vocational schools dedicated to green energy are the best place to gain a useful degree with wind/solar/hydro/geo. You should definitely learn the technical aspects – these new energies are all about technology, which is rapidly developing. If you want to be able to sell it, you have to know and be able to talk it. And, the vocational schools offer great classes with business management – knowing that a lot of their students in this field will go on to create or start their own micro-businesses with green energy (very common in the U.S. To do this).

Richard asks…

Will Obama pull a magical ace out of the hole and create 4 million high paying alternative energy jobs in 3?

… years?

Hasn’t Obama been telling us that green energy is cheaper than coal, oil, natural gas, etc and will make this economy soar?

The Expert answers:

Why 4 million? We are quite a distance from green energy but if we don’t start on an alternative to OPEC reliance, we wouldn’t be able to get to the jobs anyway.

Donna asks…

Jobs that require an AAS in Alternative Energy?

I’m thinking about getting my Associates in Applied Science for Alternative Energy and was wondering what kind of jobs I would be looking at. Any ideas as to what jobs require this? What would the pay be? How much more would I make with a Bachelors?

The Expert answers:

An associates degree is hardly worth the trouble. You might be able to bead out someone for a job that only requires a HS diploma or GED.

Mark asks…

Don’t alternative energy sources create jobs as well?

There seems to be a false dichotomy among the (apparently oil loving? why?) Republicans and those of us who support developing alternative energy sources. It seems to me that if, say, solar or wind energy became the dominant energy sources for America, that many jobs would also be created in maintaining these energy sources, without the messy fallout of things like the BP oil spill. Is this another example of cons irrationally holding onto the harmful past?
Oil jobs are detrimental to our environment and future sustainability as a race (the human race, that is) .. government help in creating non-threatening energy industries is a far better use of taxpayer money than wars and military spending, as antiquated forms of energy such as oil are a far bigger threat than your average foreign nation currently.

The Expert answers:

Yes, we need to move to other resources. It would create more jobs. We are suck up and depend too much on oil.

Linda asks…

I’m an MBA student interested in marketing alternative energy technology, where are the jobs?

I’m an MBA student in New York City looking for a marketing internship in alternative energy, especially in emerging technology. I’ve been searching the web and have found a few leads, but I need more help. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for me?

The Expert answers:

I’m a current Kellogg student and am facing a similar issue. Just a few findings – there are organizations that are helping increase the adoption and the utilization of renewable energy, such as CommunityEnergy. However, a colleague of mine suggested that if you want to really see work on alternative energy, join a large energy company and work in the renewable energy group. I believe your best bet will be in Texas, particularly Houston. If you’re looking for international developments, look at operations in SE Asia. I hope that helps.

Go Green, Grow Your Own

img8Go green by growing your own fresh garden goodies, no matter how small or large your garden area.

All the ingredients for salsa can be grown in two pots on the balcony. Fresh herbs thrive in tiny pots on the window sill as easily as in a side yard. Amaze your guests by letting them pick their own potatoes for the grill at the same time they gather flowers for the salad, no matter where you live. Even tall plants like corn and sunflowers will do well in patio pots.

By catching and storing the cold water that would go down the drain when it’s heating up for a bath or shower you have provided your garden its life source, cut down on your water bill and stretched another resource that much farther. Go greener planting goodies you watched grow from seedlings.

Seed companies are increasing their varieties and stocks of ornamental and edible plants for the small-space and backyard gardeners because the demand is high. People want fresh, ripe, toxin-free food that is affordable and readily available. How can you be any more in control of what you eat than by growing it yourself?

Patio gardens are easy to plant, care for and are right at your fingertips. Gardening in your backyard isn’t as complicated or time consuming as you may think, especially if you join forces with a couple of folks who don’t have any more extra time than you.

Everybody takes an hour or two, one or two days week to weed or mulch or water and all enjoy the harvest. Growing fresh flowers, edible or just ornamental, is a very environmentally friendly and neighborly thing to do. There’s no need to buy crop flowers that needed bug-spray or hauling from the fields because those bright beauties are in front of your door.

Flower beds or potted plants add sparkle and smiles to your neighborhood, even up on the 12th floor. Everybody likes to see fresh blooms whether they have allergies or not so take pictures of your accomplishments for sneezing friends and share the real deal with everyone else.

You can even make potpourri drying your scented bloomers.

Go green and grow your own goodies to eat, admire and share. Considering all the information available on what grows best where and how you live, why not see what color your thumb is? Food costs go down, stress and blood pressures lower while nutrition value goes up. Go green all the way around; plant greens to save greens.

Your Questions About Green Living

John asks…

Are there any trade schools for renewable energy technician?

I would really love to study renewable energy to be a tech but i don’t want to go to a 2-4 year college where i have to take history… I want to learn to become a renewable energy tech i don’t know how knowing when columbus sailed is going to help me in that. I know there is one in Colorado but I’m looking for one closer to west texas. It would be even better if there was one I could start online as I will not be able to relocate for a couple of years.

The Expert answers:

Information about schools will be found below.

David asks…

Where can I find a house plan that incorporates renewable energy and ecologically friendly concepts.?

I want to build a new house that is as independent from the power grid as possible, and recycles as much water and waste and possible. This is in the Dallas, Texas area. I am interested in solar, wind and hydrogen energy hybrids.

The Expert answers:

The website linked below may help generate ideas. I would say that the most “ecologically friendly” property would be a house that isn’t too big for your needs and doesn’t take up a large plot of land. You save land space and heating/cooling money with a correctly sized home.

To be “as independent from the power grid as possible” you will need to have a special arrangement with your utility company. I am pretty sure that anywhere in the USA electric utilities are required by law to buy back any excess power generated by its customers at market value, but equipment must be installed such that the customer generating power is disconnected during a power outage (so problems can be safely fixed). So, first step is to contact your utility company to see if you can come to an arrangement to implement your renewable energy ideas at your property.

As far as what sources to use, solar seems like a sure bet in Texas. Wind might be beneficial, depending on where you live. Hydrogen might work depending on what you use it for and if you can obtain it (not likely). If you are really hardcore, there are methods for obtaining methane from the organic waste that is produced. The methane can then be burned to produce additional electricity (probably not economical for just one household, though).

Ruth asks…

What is renewable energy content?

I live in Texas and am looking for a new energy provider. I was looking through the options and it can be filtered by “renewable energy content” ranging from 2% to 100%. What do I want here? I don’t know what it means.
So do I want one that is 100%? Or less? Or the least?

The Expert answers:

That’s the percentage of the energy you receive that comes from renewable sources and not fossil fuels.

For instance:
Company A provides energy to house B. Company A sends house B electricity that is 65% from coal-fired facilities, 25% from wind turbines, and 10% from solar panels. Company A has a renewable energy content of 35%.

Helen asks…

Should the rest of the country follow Texas’ lead on energy?

Texas‘ economy is doing better than most of the rest of the country. The state’s unemployment rate is only 8.2%. One major reason appears to be the transition to low-carbon energy sources.

“As it has for decades, energy is driving Texas‘ economy. But it’s not because the state’s wells are gushing crude. In November 2009, Texas wells produced 1.08 million barrels per day, about half as much as they did in the late 1980s. In recent years, natural gas has been undergoing a renaissance. The state’s production rose about 35 percent between 2004 and 2008. And Texas has received a big boost from a different, renewable source of energy: wind.”

Texas recently surpassed 10,000 megawatts of [wind] capacity, the most by far of any state and enough to power 3 million homes, Sadler says. Wind energy is also powering employment—creating more than 10,000 jobs so far. And it and has attracted foreign companies, including Danish turbine maker Vestas, Spanish renewableenergy giant Iberdrola, and Shell.”
http://www.slate.com/id/2250999/?yahoo=y

Should the rest of the country follow Texas‘ lead on energy and move towards low-carbon sources?

The Expert answers:

Of course they should, but it’s not tat easy. A lot of Northern States, unlike Texas, have a lot of alpine environment. This makes huge areas for wind Energy nearly impossible, plus, the snow and ice will destroy them. Although some can use tidal energy not many can. In order to switch, each state must do it on its own tailoring to it’s own conditions.

Mark asks…

Does anyone know where I can advertise my “GREEN” energy product online?

I am a marketing consultant with a energy company that has a Certified Green Plan provides electricity service that’s Green-e certified to reduce the environmental impact of the energy you use. This product is available in Texas and New York.

I really want to advertise on the internet where I can spread the word on our renewable energy product. The environment is so important to me and our company and I just want to get the word out on how people can contribute in a small way to help save our planet.

The Expert answers:

There are several online directories and guides that allow you to market and advertise Green products. Just check the source link below so see some of them.

Your Questions About Green Living

John asks…

Can anyone suggest a good book on sustainable living?

I’d like a book on sustainable living with practical ideas that you can use and make at home. Pictures and diagrams of how to do these things would be great. Or even a website with this sort of thing.

The Expert answers:

I bought this last fall and I really like it. It’s pretty huge. Maybe doesn’t have everything you need, but it’s pretty comprehensive, well-organized, easy to read and understand, and good diagrams, etc. Too. Should be available in your local bookstore, easy to find because it’s big and has a plain brown-paper-bag-lookin’ cover.

There are tons of more specialized books out there too, depending on your focus.

Good luck!

Nancy asks…

How to start sustainable urban living?

I’ve wanted to really get into sustainable living. I just moved into an apartment with a balcony and I’m overwhelmed with options… Where is the best place to start?
I am in a landscape horticulture program right now and taking ‘intro to sustainable landscaping’. This means I can do more stuff, but also have less focus. I have done little things such as buying mainly thrift and slowly making all my own toiletries.

The Expert answers:

First easy step container gardening, put a few pots on the balcony and grow food, tomatoes do very well lettuces, herbs, . There are whole web sites devoted to container gardening.

So that would be an easy first step with a nice pay off, you cut down on your food bill, and think how a nice really fresh salad would taste, with home grown spinach, lettuces, tomatoes, and a nice herb dressing. And it you have frost, you just move them inside. A plus plus, you get better food and you’re saving the transportation cost.

Lizzie asks…

What are some sustainable living options? – and some extended details please?

I am doing some homework on designing a poster for Technology Class. I just need some help on what I should choose, they all seem good. I need this ready for the 31st of March. Thanks! And if you cannot answer this question, then you could probably try to answer my other question about using sustainable or renewable energy in our lives 🙂 Thanks!

The Expert answers:

1. Make compost from all vege waste.
2. Install a composting toilet
3. Grow your own food using the compost.
4. Fully insulate your house
5. Add solar gain to your house like a conservatory
6. Re-use as much as possible
7. Recycle what you don’t re-use.
8. Turn your car into a glass-house to grow tomatoes etc.
9. Ride a bicycle
10. Collect rain water
11. Use water sparingly
12. Go to bed at sunset and get up just before sunrise

Betty asks…

Is there a place online where you can meet singles who have common interest in sustainable living?

I have joined homesteading and sustainable lifestyle online groups, however, none of the people are single or are looking to meet anyone. They only want to talk about preserving food and what-not, lol. I don’t really like dating sites because it’s hard to meet people with common interests. Whats one to do? Any suggestions?

The Expert answers:

My wife and I met on eHarmony and we are a lot alike. Actually, I suggest that you sign up for the one or three month service. I signed up for a year, but I met her after one week and we were married three months after we met. When you know, you just know. We’ve been happily together for over two years now. They have free weekends every now and then, so check them out when this happens.

Where can I find a popular website where I can sell and market my eco-friendly / green products?

I am in the process of creating a bunch ecofriendly toys made from organic cotton, hemp, and environmentally friendly materials, and will soon be manufacturing other green products. Is there a site out there like Amazon for green eco products only? I plan to upload my products onto my own website, and would also like to list them/market them on a popular eco product site that gets loads of green-minded / eco conscious customers visiting the site. Betty asks…

Are English people interested by eco friendly products?

I wanted to know if anybody had any market knowledge to share on the English interest in eco friendly products. More broadly, I want to know to what extent do the Brits care about ecology.
Thank you.

The Expert answers:

The English are a cynical bunch. If a product is marketed as eco friendly, but costs a lot more than the standard product, they’ll suspect it’s a scam. Pitch your product at the same price and they’ll buy it.

John asks…

If we switch to more eco-friendly products what will that do for the environment?t?

I am writing an expressive essay on how we should use more ecofriendly products and how if we make the switch to better products how that will affect the environment. Does anyone know how using better products will affect our world in a better way?

The Expert answers:

Switching to Eco-friendly products helps really a lot!
Reduces carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere which will help reduce global warming.
Shifting to solar energy sources or other non-carbon energy sources (for one, hydro power) really contributes a lot..

Carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing day-by-day with increasing pace…
If we don’t do anything (shifting to Eco-friendly products is a positive step to preserve our environment), we are gonna face disasters…

Shifting to Eco-friendly things saves lots of trees from getting cut which is really needed(more the trees, less the amount of co2 in the air, less the global warming, more our chances to live comfortable life)

SAVE TREES! PLANT FEW MORE TO CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR HOME PLANET!

Environmental issues?

I have a project at school and we have to do a project on an environmental issue. I don’t want to do pollution because everyone else is doing it. Any environmental issues I should do a project on? And is poaching considered a environmental issue?

The Expert answers:

Tell them about environmental legislation that ends up with adverse externalities or the law of unintended consequences. Use the premium paid for corn by our government to promote the production of ethanol for auto and truck fuel to cut pollution. Then tell them how this law deprived Mexicans from being able to afford corn tortillas a staple in their diet. Tell how 80,000 migrant Mexican farm workers were put out of work by Barbra Boxer and Diane Feinstein because they want to protect the delta smelt (a small fish about the size of your pinkie from extinction when States like Michigan have an overabundance of these fish to the extent that they net them and sell them on the open market as food. I have given you a start, there are many more REAL examples besides these.

Paul asks…

Environmental Issues?

hi, what are some environmental issues? what are some things i can do at home to save money and to not waste energy? also, how would i go about making a poster for other people to look at it and to stop wasting energy

The Expert answers:

Ride a bike to get around.

Turn off lights and other devices when not using them.

Use less water to wash. And, turn off the water while soaping up in the shower.

Recycle whatever you can.

Grow your own garden.

Poster: I think you can illustrate each of the suggestions above, showing a hand turning off a faucet (with a drop falling), show a person soaping in the shower with the water off, show a small trickle of water as a person scrubs a carrot, show a recyling container with a kid tossing in a soda can.

Recycling aluminum is one of the most energy-saving things we can do.

1) Destruction of natural environment — deforestation, or in Arctic, melting of ice that is making life difficult for polar bears
2) Pollution, BP, but also careless disposal of household wastes that slowly are killing and/or deforming creatures such as salamanders, toads and frogs
3) Stormwater (often contaminated with sewage and gas/oil from roadways) that harms creatures in freshwater — also, the disappearing wetlands from construction; wetlands naturally clean runoff but are rapidly being lost — several difficult to replicate saltwater wetlands were harmed for decades by BP
4) Dams and so forth that disrupt routes fish (such as salmon) use to spawn
5) Coal mining — disrupts and destroys natural environment for all types of mammals, amphibeans and fish by destroying wetlands and forests
etc. Etc. I could write a thesis on this.
