Your Questions About Green Living

Sandra asks…

Is John Mccain practicing the “Audacity of Hope”?

With the Mccain campaign’s recent push to connect Obama with “terrorist” Ayers and re-visit any Muslim connections, however tacit and tenuous, Obama has had in the past It would appear to me that Mccain himself is actually practicing “audacity of hope” that Obama has become so famous for.

Does anyone think that is being audacious in hoping that these desparate tactics will provide him the voter support he needs appear to be a viable candidate in this election, let alone give him any chance of being elected?

The entire Republican machinery has handled Mccain and Palin so poorly in terms of creating a viable and sustainable brand that the American people can stand cleanly behind and feel confident in that now it truly does look like Mccain is grasping at straws. Does anyone else agree?

Finally, at first I held a great deal of animosity towards Sarah Palin because of the vitriolic way she entered this race attacking Obama as if he was the anti-christ incarnate. Now I feel only waves of sympathy for her. I know that she thinks she understands what shes gotten herself into but the truth is after this election, at best she will be consigned to some nominal position in the Republican party serving some fringe, fear mongering faction. She nor her children will have any chance at normalcy and I believe she will become a caricatured footnote in history. I’d love to hear others views on this.

So the Mccain camp is audaciously discreditting Obama in hopes that it will save his chances for the whitehouse. Am I incorrect in this?

The Expert answers:

I think that is about all he has left. He needs to hope that Obama makes a monumental blunder because this election is Obama’s to lose and I don’t see that happening.

Carol asks…

I need help on my essay based on green power(non viable energy sources for the future)?

My essay is based on the following questions and so far I have….
1. What is “green power”?
2. Do you believe that we need to find alternate, environmentally friendly energy sources?
3. How many possible “green power” options did you find in your research?
4. What were the options you found?
5. Are any of these options being used today?
6. Which, if any, do you feel are viable energy sources for the future? Why?
7. Which, if any, do you feel are not viable energy sources for the future? Why?

1. What is “green power”?

Green Power is a method to make and also help the Earth be a better place to live in. It is without a doubt the highest environmental benefit. We have to take very good of the earth and use the resources the earth gives us. Simply by doing that we are creating green power. Green Power is made possible by using natural resources that are renwable in order to create more engery. All being done without polluting and hazardous technologies. That can polute the earth and damge it in the end. A few examples of green power energy is solar, wind, and water. Those energy example are not only helpful abundant energy sources to the earth but very concvient because they are the top three the earth acutally provides for us. They are energy sources that are replenished at a sustainable rate by natural processe and will never run out if we take good care of the earth. It is very important to support green power because not only does make the Earth a better place for us to live in but also for out grandchildren and great grandchildren. Not keeping the earth in its top shape can destroy the earth everybody and everything in it. By creating green power we prevent global warming something that is already occuring. Also at the same time of making green power come to action we are contrbuting to cleaner air and water.

2. Do you believe that we need to find alternate, environmentally friendly energy sources

I dinitely think we need to find alternate environmental friendly energy sources. It could all help stop global warming. We do already have environmental energy source but the effciency and percentage of installtions must go up, and soon. The quick and most simple soultion is by using renewable energy. The planet gives us so much flowing water, it gives off so much solar energy and strong winds that we need to put it all in energy effect. I diffently thing we need to lower down the use of propane coal that only seems to pollute the earth. Instead use the abundant and free to use these friendly environmental energy sources that we are naturally provided with. Not only use these energy sources but convert them and use them in an eco friendly way the will not hurt our earth. everyone as an individual or even as a community need to show that this can be done and put words and imagination to action.

I have beed doing research and have found numerouse green power options. Ive gotten as far to 12 and as more research i did the number went up. If every contributed to to green power the options could go up endlessly. Solar is an energy that has been given to us for billions of years. Solar can generate electricity in several ways it can convert light to electricity. Solar can heat water to create steam, which turns turbines to generate electricity. One simple way an individual can alternate from propane oil to solar and use the friendly engery source by driving an eco-friendly car. The car can get its energy from solar and that person itself help stop polluting . Wind is also another environmental friends energy source is wind it can be harnessed to generate electricity using wind turbines of many different sizes and applications. Many farmers use this enegy with putting thier windmills to work. Water can be used as hydropower turbines to generate electricity. As waves go up and down it gets the turbine to generate electricity. When the ocean water moves up and down and the energy is captured it spins a turbine that can power a generator.

4. What were the options you found?
sun
wind
water
earth
tide
waves
oceans
renewable energy
biofuel
uranium
coal
natural gas
oil
tires
biomass

5. Are any of these options being used today?

yes world wide

6. Which, if any, do you feel are viable energy sources for the future? Why?

how can i finish this letter politely? emergency help! thanks?

MAY 9 2011
Stephen Chu
US Energy Secretary
blank(my name)
blank(my school)
Greetings Mr. Steven Chu

I am a freshman in ………….. Recently, I have studied energy sources that are sustainable and renewable. I have a project that is talking about renewable energy and I have to send three sources energy that I think it is good for the future to you. The purpose is for you to consider about my 3 options.
The first option is solar energy. This type of energy source can produce electricity by sunlight and the solar panel. We can use it in many ways such as heat the house, convert sunlight into electricity, heat fluid, and heat water. If we compare this to fuel, coal and gas, solar power is better because it does not cause any pollution, we can use it again and again. It works without any sound. It doesn’t pollute the air at all. When we install it at home, it doesn’t cause any impact to the environment. Anyway there are some problems in this energy. Solar panel is very costly, some low economic countries or families can’t afford to buy solar panels. The second impact is that it can only produce energy in the day time and sunlight is not stable.
Second option is tidal power, it is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into electricity or other useful form of power. Tides are caused by the gravitational of moon, sun and the rotation of the earth. Tidal power can give energy to us for billions of years because moon and sun might not vanish. When tidal power is working, we may able to control the level of storms and tsunamis. It can generate a high amount of electricity with 80% more than coal or oil. The concerns of tidal power are the availability of tidal energy and the complicated ocean life. We can only have tidal energy in the areas that have strong tidal waves which some areas don’t even have ocean. The blades of turbine frames can injure or kill animal in the water and the population of fishes can reduce.
Wind power is also a renewable energy source. Most wind energy comes from turbines that can be as tall as a 20-story building and have three 200-foot-long (60-meter-long) blades. The wind spins the blades and turns a shaft connected to a generator that produces electricity. It is the same as other clean energy; it doesn’t produce air or water pollution. Since the wind is free, the operation doesn’t need any money. Wind energy produces no byproduct that can cause global warming. We still have some problems with wind power. The turbines can damage by thunderstorm because they are too tall. It can also kill the birds that intentionally fly through the blades.

HELP ME WITH THIS. 😉

The Expert answers:

I would just end it with “Thank you for listening,” or “Thank you for your consideration,” and sign your name.

As a school assignment, the teacher most likely wants to see a display of your understanding in the letter. Whether the letter is actually sent is secondary. Our energy secretary is likely already aware of all the things you mention, but as a young person, the future belongs to you, so it’s reasonable to register your opinion.

Donna asks…

The European Union the superpower of the 21st century, the European Century?

What do you think?

An extract from an article by Mark Leonard, from the Irish Times Newspaper from 2005.

For all the talk of the American Empire, the past two years have been more about the limits of American power. Its economic lead over Europe is disappearing (in 1950 its GDP per capita was twice that of Western Europe, while today it is almost the same size), while the political price for saying no to the superpower has never been lower (as Germany, France, Mexico, Turkey and Chile found over Iraq). In fact, the US leads the world in only two ways: it has the biggest army in the world, and the most popular “popular culture”. But the combined might of the US military could do nothing to stop 9/11 or halt terrorism in Iraq, and the more America’s presence around the world becomes militarised, the less attractive the American way of life becomes.

Meanwhile, across the pond, Europeans – often by accident – have been developing a new kind of power that cannot be measured in terms of military budgets or smart-missile technology. It works in the long term, and is about reshaping the world rather than winning short-term tussles. And when we stop looking at the world through American eyes, we can see that each element of European “weakness” is in fact a facet of its extraordinary transformative power.

In just 50 years, Europeans have made war between European powers unthinkable; European economies have closed the gap with the US; and Europe has brought successive waves of countries out of dictatorship and into democracy. If you look at a map of the world, you can see a zone of peace spreading like a blue oil slick – from the west coast of Ireland to the eastern Mediterranean; from the Arctic Circle to the Straits of Gibraltar – sucking in new members in its wake. Around the 450 million (as of 2009 it’s 500 million) citizens of the EU, there are another 1.5 billion people who depend completely on an EU that is their biggest trade partner and their biggest source of credit, foreign investment, and aid. These two billion people (one-third of the world’s population) live in the “Eurosphere”: Europe’s zone of influence, which is gradually being transformed by the European project and adopting European ways of doing things.

Europe’s power is easy to miss. Europe doesn’t flaunt its strength or talk about a “single sustainable model of progress” as America does. Instead, like an “invisible hand”, it operates through the shell of traditional political structures. The Dail, Irish law courts, and Irish civil servants are still here, but they have all become agents of the European Union, implementing European law. This is no accident. By creating standards that are implemented through national institutions, Europe can take over the world without becoming a target for hostility. The same is true of European troops abroad who often serve under UN or NATO flags rather than the European one.

While every US company, embassy and military base is a terrorist target, Europe’s invisibility allows it to spread its influence without provocation. The fact that Europe does not have one leader, but rather a network of centres of power united by common policies and goals, means it can expand to accommodate ever-greater numbers of countries without compromising their independence, while continuing to provide its members with the benefits of being part of the largest market in the world.

Europeans are not interested in classic geo-politics when they talk to other countries: instead, they use the law to change them from within. Instead of talking about the war on terror or the balance of power, they look at what kind of government they have. What values underpin the state? What are its constitutional and regulatory frameworks?
Europe’s obsession with legal frameworks means it can transform the countries it comes into contact with, instead of just skimming the surface. The US might have changed the regime in Afghanistan, but Europe is changing all of Polish society, from its economic policies and property laws to its treatment of minorities and what gets served on the nation’s tables. The lonely superpower can bribe, bully, or impose its will almost anywhere in the world, but when its back is turned, its potency wanes. The strength of the EU, conversely, is broad and deep: once sucked into its sphere of influence, countries are changed forever.

The Expert answers:

An interesting contradiction. The article take a jingoistic tone about a Europe that is completely devoid of jingoism. And a little out of date about terror attacks, given that the three worst terror attacks in the western world since 2005 have all been in Europe (Madrid train bombing, London train bombing, Scotland airport attack). But it does have a point that Europe’s influence is increasing, and that a lot of that can be attributed to the unification. Can you imagine the U.S. Unifying with anyone? Conservatives would go ape shit. Maybe this is another strength of the European Union, i.e. That their conservatives are actually sane. And they are also in power in Germany and France, with the UK not far behind. It used to be that Reagan and Thatcher represented the conservative viewpoint in the western world. Today’s conservative in the U.S. Makes Reagan and Thatcher look like Bolsheviks.

Mary asks…

I need information on ECO FRIENDLY CARS?

I have to write an essay (400 words) for a project on ”ECO FRIENDLY CARS”… I need to write about its advantages and need for the betterment of the environment.
Please help!
lol.

The Expert answers:

Hybrids capture potential energy in their batteries whenever the car stops. These cars get great gas mileage–around 60 mpg for highway and they are quiet and run on traditional gas, so can be refueled like normal cars, although less frequently.

The point is to cut down emissions to help with global warming, which is heating the earth at an alarming rate. This is melting glaciers and destroying habitats for animals.

There is also biodiesel fuel and ethenol.

WIKIPEDIA INFO:

Reduced noise emissions resulting from substantial use of the electric motor at idling and low speeds, leading to roadway noise reduction, in comparison to conventional gasoline or diesel powered engine vehicles, resulting in beneficial noise health effects (although road noise from tires and wind, the loudest noises at highway speeds from the interior of most vehicles, are not affected by the hybrid design alone). Reduced noise may not be considered an advantage by some; for example, some people who are blind or visually-impaired consider the noise of combustion engines a helpful aid while crossing streets and feel quiet hybrids could pose an unexpected hazard.

Reduced air pollution emissions, due to lower fuel consumption, lead improved human health with regard to respiratory problems and other illnesses. Pollution reduction in urban environments may be particularly significant due to elimination of idle-at-rest.

One common misconception is that HEV batteries must be replaced on a regular basis and should be treated as extremely hazardous waste. This is not entirely true. Battery toxicity is a concern, although today’s hybrids use NiMH batteries, not the environmentally problematic rechargeable nickel cadmium. “Nickel metal hydride batteries are benign. They can be fully recycled,” says Ron Cogan, editor of the Green Car Journal. Toyota and Honda say that they will recycle dead batteries and that disposal will pose no toxic hazards. Toyota puts a phone number on each battery, and they pay a $200 “bounty” for each battery to help ensure that it will be properly recycled.

Sandy asks…

Why does the Republicans and Fox news hate eco-friendly cars?

Don’t they know we will have to make changes in the auto industry.

The Expert answers:

The party of no and the channel of noise have only one goal now days and that is to be thumbs down on anything and everything that might at all be accepted by the democrats as a good idea.Fear is all they have left and are playing it to the hilt! The car story was ridiculous. The same result will happen if a Hummer was hit by a Semi truck but they didn’t mention that.A fool and his friends deserve each other! The GOP in partnership with Farce(fox!) are in a sad state. The standard of god, guns and gays is all your going to get out of them from now on over and over again.

Chris asks…

How much does GM spend on R&D for eco-friendly cars?

What about ford? Toyota?

The Expert answers:

None

there is no eco-freindly car, only less ecologically/environmentally damaging car.
Eg bodywork, tyres, road building, etc all have to damage the eco-systems and the environment to a greater or lesser extent

the big car makers have received substantial grant funding for many years for fuel cell research etc, but have not brought anything to market.

I suspect any sustainable research budget is much less than the advertising budget and jollies for fossil head journalists to persuade us to keep buying clunky, smelly, noisy, high maintenance cars that lock us into buying fuel from their global oil corp “friends”

GM have crushed all their electric vehicles & stacked them up in the desert, http://www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com, not very environmentally friendly. Anything else like the Volt is just greenwash, so is really a form of advertising, because they want to associate themselves with the idea of eco-friendlierer, which they know most of us want, without actually doing anything. It also stops any new companies getting started because who is going to fund your business if GM are going to undercut you as soon as you start.

Laura asks…

Will Eco-Friendly or “Green” cars ever be more powerful, and faster than “normal” non eco-friendly cars?

Basically, I want to know if petrol heads hate ecofriendly cars, or if they have the potential to be better than what we have currently, as well as fuel efficient

The Expert answers:

Eco, green and more powerful faster is an oxymoron. More powerful and faster means more energy, more energy means not green and not eco friendly.

The Tesla is a fast powerful car, but today it burns coal, so its not real eco friendly or green. It is made from petroleum based composites, just like the Corvette.

No eco friendly green dragster will ever beat a top fuel dragster.

Mandy asks…

What are the most eco-friendly cars on the US market?

The Expert answers:

I find it difficult to answer this question because I’m not sure what you’re looking for. Eco-friendly may mean the car that does the least damage to the environment, or you may just be referring to getting the best gas mileage, (there is a difference!)

The Toyota Prius is probably the most fuel efficient car out on the roads in the USA right now. Having said that however, consider for a moment what it takes to produce such high gas mileage numbers; mainly batteries. I’ve read conflicting arguments that say it actually produces more toxins and eco-harming agents to produce the batteries that run the Prius than a normal gasoline car will produce over it’s lifetime. If there’s any truth to these stories you may want to avoid the prius, or most hybrids for that matter.

Flex fuel vehicles are also a bit of a joke…sort of. Sure, ethanol burns cleaner, but it takes a lot more ethanol to get where you’re going than it does gasoline. Does ethanol end up polluting more…I’m honestly not sure. I’ve looked into it before and again found conflicting opinions.

My advice would be to get the most fuel efficient regular gas-powered car you can find. No batteries, no extra ethanol burning, just a regular gasoline engine.

Just my 2 cents…

George asks…

Is a renewable electricity standard better than nothing?

In the wake of the US Congress’ failure to pass a carbon cap and trade system, there are discussions to basically settle for a renewable electricity standard. A renewable electricity standard would mandate that a given share of an electric company’s production come from renewable source, and would involve the trading of renewable energy credits.

There are two main problems with this approach – namely that it focuses only on the energy sector (about 40% of US GHG emissions), and it’s a much more expensive way to reduce CO2 emissions than a cap and trade system.

Some have argued that a renewable electricity standard is better than nothing, because at least it represents a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Others have argued that if such a standard is implemented, Congress will view it as their response to climate change, and so it will take even longer to get a carbon pricing mechanism in place. But apparently even though it’s more expensive and less effective than a carbon cap and trade system, a renewable electricity standard is less objectionable to Republicans.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-stavins/renewable-irony_b_788046.html

What do you think – is a renewable electricity standard better than nothing, or would it do more harm than good by delaying real comprehensive climate legislation?
Eric – I believe electricity is one of the more expensive areas to reduce GHG emissions because coal is so (artificially) cheap. Since cap and trade reduces GHG emissions in other sectors as well as electricity, overall it’s cheaper.

The Expert answers:

I guess I’m in the “as much as possible as soon as possible” camp. Though I doubt either will happen in any case, with this congress.

One question; why is a renewable standard more expensive than cap & trade? Isn’t the end result the same – movement toward renewables?

Tigg – I pay extra for renewable energy today. I also looked around and eliminate waste. My bill went -down- not up.

Facts matter – we already burn food – see Ethanol.

Jenny asks…

I need to prepare report on carbon credits. Can anyone recommend me to a study/link that I can access online?

Specifically, I need information on how to calculate carbon credits for the oil and gas, power, and transportation industries. For example, how much energy do we need to generate from a renewable energy-based power plant (geothermal, solar, hydro, etc.) to offset the GHG emissions of a coal-fired power plant? Or how many trees do we need to offset the GHG emissions from a oil and gas field? Are there global standards to quantify carbon credits? Appreciate any help.

John MC Cain filibustered wind energy in 2007, how can he now say he will support it?

2007: McCain Opposed Legislation Extending The Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit; Recent Study Concluded More than 116,000 Jobs Could be Lost If the Tax Credit is Not Extended. John McCain supported the filibuster of the 2007 energy bill that included an extension of the production tax credit to 2011. While McCain missed the vote to on the bill, according to his staff he did, in fact, support the continuing the filibuster, which eventually killed the bill. In its place, Congress passed another version of the legislation that did not include an extension of the tax credit. A 2008 economic study by Navigant Consulting found that “over 116,000 U.S. jobs and nearly $19 billion in U.S. investment could be lost in just one year if renewable energy tax credits are not renewed by Congress… The study concluded that over 76,000 jobs are put at risk in the wind industry, and approximately 40,000 jobs in the solar industry.” [HR 6, Vote 425, 12/13/07; Forbes, 12/13/07; U.S. News & World Report, 12/14/07; American Wind Energy Association and the Solar Energy Industries Association press release, 2/4/08] Are any as concerned as I am over this seeming contradiction? Why are you — Why not?

The Expert answers:

You, like most of the country, only look at the headlines. Have you read any part of HP6? There was loads of R&D money earmarked in it, some good and some bad (aka pork). Most notably there was no provision for opening up domestic oil drilling, something the Republicans were trying to get. Filibusters are ways to force compromise, not just to kill legislation.

Tax credits are ok to a certain extent, but if an industry so desperately needs one to survive, perhaps it is not time for that industry to exist. The tax credits headline was the only one the average person would even notice, so that’s what the media used.

Open your eyes people, and do your own research. Stop taking everthing you see in the news at face value.

income from renewable energy?

I was going to use $400,000 on solar and wind power for pass income. However the electric company only gives credits for excess power to the grid. How can I utilize the excess power for passive income?

Richard asks…

How many kWh will 1 ton of woodchips produce when co fired in a modern gas or coal cogen plant?

I am trying to determine how many renewable energy credits can be generated from a massive amount of waste wood and whether its economically feasible to move the mountain of wood waste to a cogen power plant

The Expert answers:

A typical wood chip cogen plants produces a net of 909.74 kWh per Bone Dry Ton (corrected to 0% moisture) of wood chips. This is the net value that is fed back into the grid, the parasitic load and other plant electricity consumptions have been subtracted already.

I have studied extensively various biomass plants in California, and those are the actual average data, not yet published by our group. Last years data shows that the pilot plant under study has burned 91,410 BDTs and produced a net of 83160.00 MWhr of electricity that was fed back to the grid.

Maria asks…

833.33 cents per home for years of free wind energy sounds pretty good to me. How about you?

This is actually an anti-green power article run by ABC complaining that 30% of the wind turbines are made in China. At this price I do not really care that much. The electricity will be made and used here and it is cheap.

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/obama-stimulus-money-spent-overseas/story?id=10002592

The program has already spent $2 billion, funding enough projects to power 2.4 million homes. Any wind farm created in the U.S. is eligible for stimulus money to put up wind turbines, regardless of where those massive structures are made. Each turbine costs about $3 million, and reaches 40 stories into the sky.

A minimum of 70 percent of each wind turbine […] will be wholly manufactured in the United States and made entirely of American steel. It is incorrect to assume that the hundreds of additional jobs created aside from the direct construction and operation of the Texas plant would be outside the U.S.,” said Cappy McGarr, managing partner for the U.S. Renewable Energy Group.

The frustrated senators are concerned, though, that some of the money is also paying for manufacturing jobs in China, and they are pushing a bill requiring that stimulus projects create jobs in the United States. They want the wind energy program stopped before the Chinese turbine manufacturers can collect any money.
These are already built at this price.

The Expert answers:

If you want to argue that the environmental benefits of wind power are worth the cost, go ahead. That’s debatable, but at least it’s a viable argument. But arguing that it makes economic sense is absurd. “Creating” jobs through government subsidies is an illusion.

Michael asks…

In Texas Bill White from Houston is running for govenor against Rick Perry the incumbent. Who wins?

White is a very strong candidate. He made the City of Houston, the largest electricity user in the region, the nation’s #1 public purchaser of renewable energy. During his tenure at City Hall, Bill White cut the city’s energy use by six percent, despite double-digit growth in Houston’s population and thousands of new jobs. White required annual performance reviews of city employees, established performance-based pay programs, and was willing to ask low performers to improve or leave. He established a program to permanently recycle hundreds of thousands of tons of yard waste, reducing landfill costs to taxpayers. Bill White understands that keeping young people in school requires both publicly funded programs and the involvement of civic, business, and religious leaders at all levels of government.

Perry is the longest serving governor and won’t debate or take questions from the media. He has friends running the Teachers Retirement Fund who make millions in investment fees and the School Book Board that recommends altering history to make the chuch more important. Then another friend got millions from the Emerging Technology Fund on appealing to Gov. Perry, after he was originally turned down. Do you think he has been in office so long he doesn’t think all this political corruption matters to the voters?
As an independent voter I found Bill White when I was fed up with Perry’s cronies on the School Book Board who said the Civil War had slaves fighting for the Union and omitted Jefferson as a writer of the constitution instead of bettering our students knowledge.

Houston voters returned White to office with re-election margins of 91% and 86%.
Bill White’s proven track record with law enforcement, earned him the support of sheriffs responsible for 98% of Texans living in counties along the border.

The JFK Profiles in Courage Award is presented to two elected public officials each year. White was chosen for welcoming 150,000 hurricane Katrina and Rita evacuees to the city despite complaints that the newcomers were a drain on local resources. He immediately helped establish emergency shelters and fostered creation of programs to help those who chose to stay in Houston find housing and jobs.

The Expert answers:

Texans had better hope Bill White does.

Perry is in it for Perry.

Anybody out there using a solar heated stirling engine to generate residential electricity?

I am a general contractor in Texas, I am currently designing a environmentally friendly home for myself and young family to live in. I am viewing my options on electricity generation, i.e PV with battery and invertor, bio diesel generators, solar powered stirling engine, possibly offsetting solar power with wind. I have a design for a trombe wall which will help cool the house in the summer and heat it in the winter. Solar powered H2O heaters are a no brainer, My brother in the UK has one and has an abundant amount of hot H20. The cooling system will probably encompass geo-thermal energy, again a lot of systems available, unfortunately for the masses these systems are more expensive than traditional energy sucking compressors and heat exchangers. Hopefully by the time I invest in renewable energy for my home the government will offer more than a $2000.00 TAX credit toward the investment.
If so please forward me details.

The Expert answers:

Yes

But I live in England

Jenny asks…

The very conservative and oil man T.Bone Pickens is advocating and pushing renewable energies such as?

solar and wind power. This man is as Republican as you can get and from Texas, so you know he was a Bush supporter. Now he is advocating what President Carter did 30 years ago. Does it really take this long for the GOP and conservatives to finally wake up?

Home

nvedukat… Carter had a solar energy program and even had solar panals placed on the White House. Reagan dismantled the program and then took the solar panals off the White House. perhaps you should read some history.
Suthrn, I know he has a vested interest in this. That wasn’t my point. But there are many small companies in the country that have already started their solar energy business’ and they are already doing very very well economically. They are even on the stock market and that has been a very strong sector. As far as I’m concerned I don’t care if he has heavy investments in it or not. As long as we can clearly get off oil with our energy needs and with our transportation needs, I don’t care. The economy will be better and so will our planet.
Thom…. liberals don’t think alternatives will get us off oil completely. Why do you think we advocate electric/gasoline plug in hybrids that get 180 miles per gallon and not bio fuels such as ethanol.

The Expert answers:

I work for one of the biggest oil companies in the world and we’ve been pushing renewables for quite some time now. We’re on the cutting edge of renewables technology. I think what people don’t understand is that we will need all of the energy we can get over the next 100 years. All sources, fossil fuels and other alternatives will be necessary. The problem as I see it with liberals is that they think alternatives will solve our problems within the next few years and we won’t need oil anymore. Any energy expert would tell you that that’s completely unrealistic.

Edit: Well if you don’t think that way then I commend you, but I’m pretty sure most liberals do. That’s one of the reasons they don’t want more offshore drilling. They argue that we wouldn’t get any oil out of the ground for 8-10 years (which is false) so, therefore, it’s not worth it because we won’t be using oil in 8-10 years because we’ll be using some alternative instead.

David asks…

Which Candidate Has An Illegal Alien Policy?

The U.S. doesn’t have an unlimited energy and water resources…The water source that supplies Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa and parts of Texas is not a renewable resource.

Neither Mc Cain nor Obama has mentioned anything about what we’re to do with the illegal aliens in the U.S.

What’s with that?

The Expert answers:

Both have offered amnesty in one form or another. McCain said he’ll secure the borders first. Obama wants to get it done in the first 100 days.

Daniel asks…

What Do U think Green Party works to oppose US-Mexico border wall?

While many in the Green Party focus on border walls as overseas injustices, the Arizona Greens and other southwestern states GP members have taken a stand against the U.S. border wall now spanning California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. In addition to the wall’s assault on the environment, immigrant rights, and democratic processes, the most overlooked concern is its impact on indigenous peoples within U.S. borders.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the leadership of Secretary Janet Napolitano has continued construction, “to secure our borders and reduce illegal immigration,” the DHS website states. Yet continued seizure of land, obstruction of ceremonial pathways, and militarization of the region are devastating native nations located along the international boundary zone from California through Texas.

Arizona Green Party co-chairs Claudia Ellquist and Angel Torres submitted additional language for the Green Party Platform in the section on Immigration in 2007.

“We demand an immediate end to policies designed to force undocumented border crossers into areas where environmental conditions mean dramatically increased risk of permanent injury or death, and mean greater degradation of fragile environments, and the cutting off of corridors needed by wildlife for migration within their habitat. For these reasons we specifically oppose the walling off of both traditional urban crossing areas and of wilderness areas,” the submission recommends.

“We demand recognition of sovereignty in determining independent status of their members by indigenous nations whose people would otherwise be separated by the border demarcations of more recent nations.” The border has obstructed indigenous familial and societal relationships for generations, a problem that the wall has exacerbated.

Relative to egregious Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and citizenship initiatives, the border wall has remained a low visibility issue in national debates on immigration reform. While no-wall activism, border-crossing, environmental issues and local economies take center stage, concerns of indigenous people are marginalized.

Green Party works to oppose US-Mexico border wall

What impact does illegals have on the environmental issues from carbon foot prints to trash left behind, why it is none of this get indicated ?

The Expert answers:

Yet continued seizure of land, obstruction of ceremonial pathways, and militarization of the region are devastating native nations located along the international boundary zone from California through Texas.
=========================
Anyone who has been there knows this is one very silly idea. People who try to get across that desert in summer time.. From May 1st to the End of September.. On foot, die. And while that was a hunting ground once upon a time many years ago, there are no scared native grounds anywhere in that area that cannot be gotten to by crossing the border at a reconized place. And in fact, anyone who talks to the Tribes down there themselve needs to make it clear they also want the fence because that IS what is protecting the tribes and the people from the Mexican Mafia.

Helen asks…

how long can employer withhold promise check?

My husband along with the entire company that he works for recieved raises in January. They have not recieved any of it in their checks so far. The employer keeps telling them “next pay period” and then they have some excuse for not doing it. The employer told them they would give them back pay all the way till Jan 1.
This is a company of about 100 people. A chemical company that is small, but well known in the community offering services to other bigger chemical companies.
This company has already been in hot water either beginning of the year or December (can’t remember right now). They were in trouble for environmental issues.
So can they do keep doing this? It is May and they still haven’t gotten their raises or their “back up check”.
With them being already in hot water you would think they wouldn’t do this. Which to me may make it seem easier to report.
Can I report this maybe even anonymously?
WHO would I report this situation too?
I’m in Texas.
well that is BS. I think that is completely unethical to sit there and lie and say here is your raise-oh but you can’t have it yet-maybe next time–oh you can’t have it again–maybe next time–you you can’t have it again—-maybe next time. BS

The Expert answers:

There is no law in any state that says anyone is entitled to a raise in pay unless there is a written and signed employment contract, they can keep promising forever and there is nothing he can do, the only law in the US that protects employees wages is the minimum wage law, anything more than minimum wage is between the employee and the employer
EDIT it happens more than you would ever believe, I agree with you but unfortunately unethical is not illegal

David asks…

What ever happened to environmental modification { EnMod } ?

After 3 weeks of research into Environmental modification or EnMod I found many things suprising and thought I would share and see what is you take on this – Environmental modification or EnMod was researched in the beginning of the 1970s and portions of the U.S. government and/or military viewed weather and climate modification research as having transitioned from the “basic research” stage to the “operational” stage. Experiments were occurring – or had occurred – in 22 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Iran, Israel, Kenya, Italy, France, South Africa, Congo and the U.S.S.R. Airborne seeding programs were undertaken to combat drought in the Philippines, Okinawa, Africa and Texas. Fog clearing had become a standard operation at airports, as had hailstorm abatement, which had been proven successful in several parts of the world. Forest fire control had been carried out in Alaska and watershed seeding was widely practiced, while lake storm snow redistribution was under extensive investigation. By 1973 there were over 700 degreed scientists and engineers in the U.S. whose major occupation was environmental modification (EnMod).

And then it all changed. In 1978 The United States became a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques (EnMod Convention or ENMOD for short). The EnMod Convention prohibits the use of techniques that would have widespread, long-lasting or severe effects through deliberate manipulation of natural processes and cause such phenomena as earthquakes, tidal waves and changes in climate and weather patterns.

Independent journalist Keith Harmon Snow wrote a massive report entitled: “Out of the Blue: Black Programs, Space Drones & The Unveiling of U.S. Military Offensives in Weather as a Weapon.” In it he tells us: “In 1976, U.S. government officials outlined 50 experimental projects and 20 actual pilot programs costing upwards of $100 million over the next eight years. It was an explosive subject, up [through] the 1970s but, after 1977, EnMod interest seemed to disappear almost overnight. In other words, after decades of intense research and development, after billions of dollars of investment, after major institutions and governmental bodies were created and charged with oversight of EnMod and its many peripheral issues, and after the entire reorganization of the U.S. Government to channel and guide and map out the future of this new and promising military and civilian ‘technology’ – said to be more important than the atom bomb – everything stopped.
Or did it?
It was as if a huge curtain fell over the subject as all research, all institutional interests, huge salaries and thousands of jobs – vanished. And the mass media stopped reporting anything and everything as if struck by plague. That – sudden and total silence – is perhaps the most telling and suspicious indication of the secrecy and denial that the EnMod arena was shackled with. Today it is almost as if it never happened.”

Could it be that the US government said, “Oh gee, we can’t do that any more” and just gave up on military EnMod – or did the whole program go “black”?

The Expert answers:

A more likely scenario:

The US pours 100s of millions of dollars into whacky pie-in-the-sky weather control programs that turn out to do basically nothing.

Rather than admit that, they sign the treaty and ‘scrap’ the programs.

The ABM treaty was similar. The technology just wasn’t there to make ABMs work, but money was spent on them none the less, rather than just say “oops, we wasted a lot of money” we made ‘giving up’ ABMs a big deal.

Now, the technology is here, and we’re making ABMs.

Only difference is, ‘weather control machines’ are still science fiction.

Robert asks…

Would you vote for Al Gore if he ran for President in 2008?

I am an America-loving liberal democrat in Texas and I really want to see regime change here in the USA. I feel that Bushco has corrupted our government and run our country into the ground by allowing high gas prices, the erosion of our good alliances and reputation with other countries, and political scandals left and right.

However, I don’t think Hillary Clinton is the right choice for President because she vacilates too much in her opinions and seems to try too hard to appeal to the middle of the road people who tend to know nothing about real issues that affect them every day.

I think Al Gore is primed to take our country back to the success of the nineties and lead the way in environmental reform and alternative energy sourcing – two of the LARGEST coming problems. If you can’t see them as real problems baring down on us then you are BLIND. Osama is not the threat, disappearing oil and rising temperatures are, and Al Gore is prepared to handle all three.

The Expert answers:

No. Gore is smart but thinks he’s all knowing, whereas his understanding is really superficial in many areas he considers to be ‘his’ areas. That is a dangerous mixture.

The Democrats need to find someone who is sincere in their beliefs rather than slick. Slickness is what killed Kerry’s chances.

I vote for Republicans sometimes and for Democrats sometimes. I don’t see anyone in the Democratic line up whom I would vote for in 2008, but I don’t yet see anyone in the Republican line up I would vote for, either.

John asks…

How many jobs would mandating alternative energy cars provide? ?

Any sort of reports or facts on it would be useful in terms of infastructure, manufacturing, maintanence, etcetera. Thanks for the help!

The Expert answers:

Compared to not mandating it, zero or possibly even negative.

The jobs you would create from it would mean that jobs aren’t being created in other areas of economy, possibly areas of the economy that could create more jobs than trying to replace the best transportation fuel with something likely to be inferior (as much as we may hate oil and the global warming it contributes to (though it’s not the biggest cause) it is the best fuel for transportation).

Michael asks…

What should I major in in college if I want to get a job developing alternative energy technology?

I’d like to get a job helping to develop alternative energy sources like wave, tidal, and geothermal energy, but I’m not sure what the best college major would be for a field like that. Any suggestions?

The Expert answers:

Physics/Physical Chemistry, you would likely need to get a master’s and a PhD after your undergrad where you would do your thesis and doctoral work in the specific area you were interested in.

Laura asks…

High paying jobs in the alternative energy industry?

I can see alternative energy sources as being the future for United States energy consumption as gas and oil prices fluctuate drastically. I am currently 18 and am going to join the military so I can have a lot of my college paid for. Currently I have 10,000 stashed away in gold investments and mutual funds that i was going to put towards my 401k. Anyways I was wondering which alternative energy has the most money in it (six figures)? What jobs in the alternative energy industry can I go into with only a bachelors degree in college that will give me six figure potential? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I live near Sweetwater, Texas and wind energy is really big around here. I don’t know how much money is in it though.

The Expert answers:

As far as college goes, mechanical or electrical engineering will probably help the most in terms of jobs in non-traditional energy. Traditional oil and gas is more geology-focused.

Any kind of four-year engineering degree will get you six figures after enough experience.

There are some wind farms going up in the middle of Texas, I forget where. It’s one of T. Boone Pickens’ projects.

Keep your money in gold and mutual funds or index funds; don’t get crazy with it.

Your Questions About Green Living

Jenny asks…

Is this the solution to UK, EU & USA economic woes?

Just using the UK as an example. We have 61 million acres of land in the UK. Ten percent is built on land for cities, towns and industrial conurbations. Take off another ten percent for roads, railways and other current uses and we’re left with 48 million acres that are either used for farming or left as open countryside.
We have approximately 8 million families/couples that are unemployed or under-employed who can’t earn a decent living and are in constant need of taxpayer support.
We could allocate 5 acres of land to each of these families and help them build small, sustainable businesses thru the use of that land.
They wouldn’t own the land but they would have the freedom to work it and arrange their own accommodation. They would be assisted by tens of thousands of professionals who would assist with each stage of development.
Food production, trees, graveyards, community fabrication centres, the list is endless.
Unemployment would be practically non-existent. Taxes would be one third of what they are today. The whole Country would prosper hugely under such an ambitious scheme, what do you think?
Response to Avondrow:
Not serfdom. The profits of any endeavour will be shared between the landowner and the family and the Government would regulate those percentages.
Response to SDD:
This would be an act of legislation. There wouldn’t be any purchase. The benefit to the landowner is its sustainable development and his share of the profits.
Response to Dual777
The financing of any development would either come from direct investment by the landowner with favourable tax implications or local investors.
Where a family is allocated land that includes forestry, a proportion will be set aside for accommodation, the rest will be looked after by a dedicated arborist who will dictate thinning and sustainable harvesting.
Response to SpottyJ: Zimbabwe never did anything like this. They killed or ran-off the landowners and then just sat on the land and did nothing with it.
In fact, seeing as you have raised this issue, if the UK is willing to take a lead in this area and do it successfully, the model could easily be transported to other nations especially Zimbabwe…
Response to Macrocom:
Exactly right. Now consider the long-term aims of the UK gvmt with regard to the environment, sustainable development, energy security, over-crowded cities and a very frustrated populace.
This is more than a solution, it’s our only way out. Our industry is practically non-existent. The only thing we can do now is go back to the land but in a fair and practical way that will generate extraordinary prosperity for all concerned…

The Expert answers:

And the cost of acquiring all of the the 48MM acres of unused land in the UK would be? Or were you just planning to steal it from the current owners?

Ah, the joys of dictatorship!

John asks…

(urgen!!I will give many points if you answer.)How can I improve my composition?

My teacher ask me to write about an article about Hong Kong(a city in Asia, I have to find some information online!! It spend me lots of time!!!)

Here is the requirement:
“Being an international financial centre, Hong Kong should focus on progress (such as building new roads, big shopping malls and commercial buildings) rather than preservation (keeping old buildings)”. Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper giving your opinions.
Start your letter with “Dear Editor”. Sign “Chris Lee”. Do not write any address.

Here is my article:

Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my attitude towards the controversy over the statement—-should Hong Kong focus on progress rather than preservation as Hong Kong is an international financial centre. From my point of view, I am entirely in favour of preservation.
First and foremost, old buildings reflect Hong Kong’s individual culture. Dotted with all kinds of boutiques operated by different countries’ businessmen, many people say Hong Kong has lost her individual culture—just copying other countries’ cultures. Why do they say that? Is it factual? Of course not. Hong Kong has a long history and owns thousands of cultural heritages, brimming with innumerable precious stories; however, majority of us has not noticed this. Archaic temples, markets and accommodations, which are the precious heritages of Hong Kong, have shown the prestigious culture of Hong Kong. Who can disclaim them? However, if we don’t treasure them, just focus on constructing new roads, building big shopping malls and developing commercial buildings, our precious heritages will be damaged and distinct in our city. For example, Old Wan Chai Market has been demolished because government wants to develop that region into other commercial purpose. Needless to say, Wan Chai will become more developed and attract more people to invest in Hong Kong; nevertheless, our treasure market will never come back. When I was in kindergarten, my mother always took me to that market to buy some food so I was impressed of it. Now I can’t see any thing in the same position, so I feel a little depression. We can see our Old Wan Chai Market in the photographs, but it is really extinct in our city. Our precious heritages are vulnerable, so we need to endeavour for preservation of them instead of annihilating them.
Secondly, old buildings, which can stimulate Hong Kong’s economics, can attract more tourists to visit Hong Kong. Tourism which is the main part of Hong Kong’s departments has contributed billions of dollars to our city and consolidated our international financial centre position in the world. If we annihilate the preservation region in order to let us build more International Financial Centres (IFCs) to boost our economics, will it really work? This method of soaring Hong Kong’s growth is rather foolish. We just like the man who wanted to get the golden eggs from the hen, using a knife to kill the hen; finally, we could get nothing, even the hen. We can’t just focus on the present profit and abandon fundamental thing, otherwise, we can’t sustain for a long time. So we should also focus on the long-term effect.
Last but not least, old buildings can remind us not to forget the history of Hong Kong’ spirit—-never give up. Hong Kong was a little fishing village in the past, but through hard working many Hong Kong’ generations, Hong Kong has transformed into an international financial centre. Old buildings can tell us the hash life in the past so it can remind ourselves not to give up even we are in recent trouble—-financial crisis.
In conclusion, preservation is more important than progress. As many people ignore the importance of preservation, we need to raise public awareness of preservation. Sustainable development is crucial for us so Hong Kong needs our efforts.
Thank you for reading my letter.
Yours Sincerely,
Chris Lee

Linda asks…

I plan to organize a baby shower for a friend. How to tell people that we prefer organic/eco-friendly gifts?

The Expert answers:

Make it green-baby-themed shower! In other words make it an opportunity to educate everyone about the benefits to your baby and the environment in a fun, not-pushy way.

Just a few ways to set the atmosphere:

-Do an invitation on “recycled-looking”, but stylish card stock
Include images, words and colors that reflect the green theme. On the invite say you’re doing it to preserve the planet for the unborn baby:) Maybe include a factoid or two about the environment.

-Register with an organic baby site, but also register with some of the traditional ones. You can choose organic baby apparel at Target and Babies R US too. This way you will have more moderately priced organic products for guests to choose from. She’ll still get traditional diapers and other kinds of gifts, but she can always exchange them.

-Think of things associated with the shower that normally would drain the environment and encourage guests to make a different choice: i.e. Carpool, use newspaper for gift wrap

-Serve green food, salad, frappe (green sherbert and 7 up) is yummy, ice the cake with green and white, etc. Make healthy choices but don’t over do it.

-Do a word search game with environmental buzz words. The winner gets a prize. Play some of the traditional games too.

-Have favors, game prizes and decor that reflect what you’re requesting. Organic hand lotion, candles, etc.

Good luck with it. I’d love to hear how it goes. You can email me at erika@organic-baby-resource.com

The Expert answers:

For UK the original website is called Good Gifts.

Great if your friends and family already own enough stuff!

Chris asks…

Are you choosing Eco-Friendly gifts this season?

The Expert answers:

In a round-about way, yes.

For my sister, I got a gift basket made by the Women’s Bean Project – provides jobs to women in crisis and uses recycled materials.

For my boyfriend, I got a home brewing kit – now he can reuse his empties instead of chucking them.

For my dad, I got a device that transfers all his slides to digital images – no more paper and film usage.

Carol asks…

Good eco-friendly gifts for my friends?

Both guys and girls, everywhere from 13 on up. None of them are very “green” and I want to spread the Earth-love! (Please, no more than 30 dollars or so per person)

The Expert answers:

The site below supports several good causes, and has many reasonably priced items available in their store.

Ruth asks…

If you were to do a project on one of the following environmental issues, which would it be and why?

Rain Forest challenges in Brazil

Desertification/human interactions in the Sudan

Industrial pollution and human challenges in China

Global warming and potential effects in the South pacific islands
Waterways, ecosystems, and human challenges within Cambodia

Drought, poverty, and politics in North Korea.

The Expert answers:

No global warming, pleaseeee.. If I have to read or hear about another global warming paper.. I’m going to die. =D
I’ve had to do some environmental papers recently and I would say that if I could choose between those I might do…

Rain forest challenges in Brazil
Because it’s always great to talk about ecosystems and preseving them…

Or Industrial polluion and human challenges in China
Because they are a ton of topics to mention!! (This is probably your best bet if you want to write a lot and find a lot of good research)

or Desertification/human interactions in the Sudan
because I love anthropology and the ecosystem combined <333

Maria asks…

Need help with current environmental issues?

I have to put together some case studies for my AS course Environmental Studies. I thought we were doing 3 and got those done in not time at all so I could enjoy my holiday, now it turns out we’re doing 10.

Basically, the names of any environmental issue (excluding the BP oil spill, China oil spill, Indonesian land slide, Russian forest fires, Niger Floods, Pakistan Floods, and the eruption of Mt Sinabung) would be pure gold. You don’ t need to explain them in great detail, I’m willing to do the leg work, but just finding some current issues is getting really tough since I’ve run out of ideas.

Thanks to everyone who helps! x

The Expert answers:

– You could talk about generally how the Co2 levels have risen over the years and how this is affecting water levels and weather.

– Chile coal plants under fire – http://www.globalissues.org/news/2010/08/27/6768

– South-East Asia: China Flexes Hydropower Muscle – http://www.globalissues.org/news/2010/08/27/6757

I did some research and found this site that the 2 above are from. Hope its helps you build up ur case studies 🙂

Richard asks…

I am writing a college paper on AT&T’s business in China. Is there someone at AT&T I can interview?

What comparative advantage does AT&T have by operating in China? Are their any environmental issues or concerns.

The Expert answers:

AT&T has a few offices in China thus far. The source link below has a bit of interesting info and may point you in a different direction. It is suggested you conduct interviews via email. Direct your inquiries to Marketing or HR. As for giving you someone’s name, sorry – i suggest you focus on their Beijing or Shanghai offices for accurate responses in English. Good luck!

Laura asks…

If the United States took radical actions to deal with environmental issues…?

but China, Russia, India and most of Africa took NO actions to adapt…

would the US’s efforts be in vain?
Baccheus – I don’t disagree, but that isn’t the question.

The Expert answers:

No, we’d just become another third world country, and like all the other third world countries in the world, we’d live in a far more polluted and unpleasant place.

Mark asks…

Do You Check Ethical Problems of Manufacturers Before You Source Products from China?

Low labour costs and high profits, but make sure there are no ethical problems, such as use of child labour and workers suffer with daily exposure to the environmental issues. Most companies are looking for low labour costs in order to be competitive, but are keen to avoid unethical exploitation of workers. We take these issues very seriously, and take great care to recommend only organisations with high ethical standards. We are also advising and encouraging British companies to check ethical problems of manufacturers in China, before they source or manufacture products from China.

The Expert answers:

11/20 (AP): “A labor rights group alleged Tuesday that crucifixes sold in religious gift shops in the U.S. Are produced under “horrific” conditions in a Chinese factory with more than 15-hour work days and inadequate food.”

Your question is funny, because of the forum in which you asked it. The vast majority of people here on Yahoo Answers are “shoppers” from China. They buy a handful of items here and there from vendors they find on Alibaba.com. The LAST thing on their mind are social compliance issues.

Most “shoppers” from China and even true importers never do ANY due diligence of their China suppliers, much less a social audit.

If you are advertising your social audit services, then don’t waste your time on Yahoo Answers. You will get no business here. Stick to search marketing (e.g. Google adwords) and networking.

Your Questions About Green Living

Sharon asks…

What is one alternative energy technology that you would like to see become more widespread?

I know we have a lot of alternative energy skeptics in here, but the reality is that point-source energy production using a wide array of energy technologies will be the way of the future. Large scale wind and solar operations are technological nightmares and cost-wise gigantic monstrosities, but wide-spread adoption of small scale usage by individual homeowners has gigantic potential. Also, methane re-uptake technologies for commercial farming operations and water treatment facilities are also likely to become significant contributors to our future energy basket.

What is one alternative energy technology that you would take a serious interest in if it were more cost effective. Also, if you invested in some kind of alternative energy technology, how long of a payback period (recouping of costs through savings on utility bills) do you consider to be reasonable? For the sake of this question let’s assume the unit you purchase will have a 30 year useful lifespan and your total return on investment would be 30/x, where x is your payback period, suggesting an average payback period of six years would imply a 500% total return on investment.

The Expert answers:

Solar has become more efficient. I would like to see conducting and storage technologies improved.

Those 2 elements are the true key to unlocking the alternative energy potentials.

Donald asks…

What is alternative energy and what are some examples?

I need a few examples of alternative energy and what it is.

The Expert answers:

Alternative energy is a term that refers to methods of generating energy that are not the usual method (i.e. Fossil fuels). There are many forms of alternative energy, but, as energy is conserved, you have to ask yourself where the energy comes from (and the answer is always “the sun”). You should always be careful when you look at energy forms, because some of them just won’t work – like the idea of putting water in your gas tank that another user has suggested (thermodynamics shows that these ideas won’t work).

The sun undergoes nuclear reactions which result in the release of photons (beams of light that have energy associated with them). Alternative energy forms just capture the energy from the sun in different ways (actually, fossil fuels also got their energy from the sun a long time ago).

Here are a few alternative energy sources and how they relate to the sun:

Bio-fuels: We can grow plants (such as algae, corn, sugar cane) which collect the photons from the sun and use the energy in the photons to create sugars. We can harvest those sugars and and turn them into liquid fuels such as ethanol.

Solar Energy: This technology directly harnesses the energy of the sun by absorbing photons through photovoltaic solar cells and which create an electrical current when they absorb a photon. Additionally, you can use the energy of the sun to thermally heat an object, which is referred to as solar-thermal energy.

Wind Energy: When the photons from the sun hit the air in the atmosphere, that energy can cause the generation of wind. We can harvest the wind energy by using turbines which spin when the wind hits them. The spinning motion is used to turn a generator which produces electricity.

Hydro-electric: When the sun hits water, it can cause the water to turn into a gas and later that gas can result in rain. If the rain occurs at a high enough elevation and gets held behind a dam, the water now possesses a high potential energy due to the energy from the sun. That energy can be turned into electrical energy by converting the potential energy of the water into kinetic energy which is then used to turn a turbine in a hydroelectric dam.

Charles asks…

What is the cheapest alternative energy to implement and how does it compare to existing conventional energy?

What are current energy prices of alternative and conventional techniques?

The Expert answers:

Solar is the best, not the cheapest up front, but in the long run, always the best. Long after your oil runs out, long after your coal mine is closed, long after your nukes stop glowing, solar will still be there. Think about solar panels made 30 years ago still work just fine. The only power plant you want near you is a renewable one.

Mandy asks…

What is the name of this alternative source of energy called?

I recall hearing of some source of alternative energy that was based on the motion of the waves. Basically, the waves provided the energy(no giant turbines) and these things functioned like wind mills of the sea. Everything else was blah blah. The inventor of this ingenious device was some high school or college student, I think.
Whatever it is, just tell me the name of the inventor, the name of the thing he/she made, and how it works. I may have placed this question in the wrong place because there really isn’t enough about alternative energy to devote a link to. Remember, inventor, invention and how it works.

The Expert answers:

The link below leads to a patent on a “wave action energy generation system”. The creator/author is M. G. Montgomery.

The abstract/discription is:

The invention is an improvement in the economical generation of energy by providing a system for utilizing the wave action of bodies of water, such as ocean waves.^The system consists of a pair of floating units, each separately connected to a shaft member by a connecting arm, a ratchet-like gear affixed to the shaft member is indexed forward alternately or concurrently by spring loaded pawls affixed to each of the connecting arms from the floating units to the shaft members.^The wave action alternately raising and lowering the floating units concurrently turns the ratchet-like gear through the action of the pawls.^Thus, the turning shaft, properly geared can turn an electric generator, air compressor, or other device of generating another form of energy which can be used or stored for future use.

I don’t know what else you could be asking about.

William asks…

What are the potential alternative energy solution that we can use to replace gasoline in the long run?

This may sound ridiculous at this moment but we may need to face it sometime in the future , so what kind of alternative energy sources that we can tap into before we run out of gasoline? Do you think the oil companies or some other major corporations should really invest in such energy development since this is essential for the survival of our civilization.

The Expert answers:

Gerbil power works good.
