Betty asks…

Why are ECO friendly products so pricey?

Especially when the goverment wants to encourage less polution, most products are not struggling family friendly.

The Expert answers:

They’re actually fair-priced. We’ve just gotten so used to inferior, mass-produced products that sacrifice quality for price that it seems like they’re expensive. The returns you get from using healthier products will outweigh the cost. If you use less and be careful about waste then you won’t be spending anymore money than you do now.

Daniel asks…

How important is Eco-Friendly Products for your company?

Preserving our environment requires making new consumer choices about everything. Shopping green online rather than burning gas to drive from store to store is most efficient and economical way not only to save time and money but also the planet. How do you participate in saving the environment?

The Expert answers:

There is no sure fire way to “save” the environment. It doesn’t matter how eco friendly a company says their products are, they are going to lie to you just so they can make a profit through any means neccessary- i know i would if i owned one…..just being honest.

Susan asks…

Why are some people more attracted to eco-friendly products over others?

Is it by the way they look?
By the price?
Why do some people go for them and others don’t? what do you think are the main reasons?

The Expert answers:

Some people really do care about the environment and are trying to save it. Others just don’t care if it causes problems, they figure they are only going to live once and don’t care about the younger generations coming up.

Lisa asks…

How will the world benefit from my buying eco-friendly products?

Does it truly make a difference? Someone help me understand the “Green movement”

The Expert answers:

Yes! And remember than if everyone took small steps it would add up to a big difference! You don’t have to be a tree huggin’ hippie to make a difference. Simple steps like reusable bags, walking when you can and some friendlier cleaners are things that will make all the difference. And lets face it, doing these things won’t hurt at all in the long run, even if they don’t end up helping as much as we would like.

Susan asks…

Are climate change scientists altering weather / sea level data to advance a political agenda?

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/06/17/research-center-under-fire-for-adjusted-sea-level-data/

The University of Colorado’s Sea Level Research Group decided in May to add 0.3 millimeters — or about the thickness of a fingernail — every year to its actual measurements of sea levels, sparking criticism from experts who called it an attempt to exaggerate the effects of global warming.

“Gatekeepers of our sea level data are manufacturing a fictitious sea level rise that is not occurring,” said James M. Taylor, a lawyer who focuses on environmental issues for the Heartland Institute.

Steve Nerem, the director of the widely relied-upon research center, told FoxNews.com that his group added the 0.3 millimeters per year to the actual sea level measurements because land masses, still rebounding from the ice age, are rising and increasing the amount of water that oceans can hold.

“We have to account for the fact that the ocean basins are actually getting slightly bigger… water volume is expanding,” he said, a phenomenon they call glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA).

Taylor calls it tomfoolery.

“There really is no reason to do this other than to advance a political agenda,” he said.

Climate scientist John Christy, a professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, said that the amount of water in the ocean and sea level were two different things.

“To me… sea level rise is what’s measured against the actual coast,” he told FoxNews.com. “That’s what tells us the impact of rising oceans.”

Taylor agreed.

Yea yea. Fox News. Get over it. Answer the question based on the article and not the source.

The Expert answers:

Naaaahhhh….they wouldn’t do that. Oh wait! They already HAVE altered data. But they don’t have a political agenda; only Republicans do.

Steven asks…

Do you know that CAG slammed the National Biodiversity Authority for allowing questionable patents?

CAG’s findings on biodiversity conservation, in particular, will fill environmentalists with dismay. It turns out that a lax NBA allowed commercial enterprises to exploit biological resources with very little monitoring…

Environmental groups tracking NBA have been warning that the authority’s processes are far from transparent, and have raised disquieting questions on the access being provided to companies to exploit India’s biological resources without due process.

A report titled ‘6 Years of the Biological Diversity Act in India’, prepared by Kanchi Kohli and Mashqura Fareedi from Kalpavriksh environmental group and Shalini Bhutani of the international non-profit GRAIN and released in early 2009, had pointed out serious flaws with NBA’s style of functioning..

First the NBA, had refused them access to documents on its proceedings. It was only after Kohli filed a Right to Information application in 2007 that the researchers were able to get some data. Then filed a complaint with the Central Information Commission which ordered NBA to provide the required documents.

The CAG report is equally perceptive and highlights concerns on the loss of biodiversity to foreign commercial enterprises. It notes that the Biodiversity Act (2002) empowers NBA to oppose the grant of IPR in any country outside India on biological resources obtained from here or on knowledge associated with such resources. Although NBA had appointed a legal consultant in November 2005 it “did not take effective action to contest questionable IPRs”.

Tailpiece: Just recently, Gautam relinquished charge of NBA and took over as chairperson of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority!

Now do you find any difference from the greedy politicos and the learned scientists in quest of knowledge and power?

The Expert answers:

I read RS Narayanan’s article in Dinamani on this subject yesterday and he had lambasted the science community in his characteristic way! I was thinking of googling for more info and your link was useful, thanks.

National Poet Subramanya Bharathi sang ”if the learned person cheats, he would be lost in infamous fall” (crude translation of his poetic Tamil), but the people in Education, Research (science community), Judiciary or Religious groups are not the least free from irresponsibility, greed and dishonesty! ON that score it would be too unjust to lambast whole community of Educationists, Social activists, scientists, jurists etc as rascals – at least that is what learned critics like RSN do!

I have had the good fortune to meet many dedicated scientists, lawyers and Activists in my long public life and I always have held high esteem for their professions! But yes, the grave lapses of Biodiversity Dept costing not just the valuable native herbs to exotic commercial interests, but depriving the rights of tribes and farmers (under IPR) for their contribution to find their uses long before and preservation of the stock for the community – deserve the strongest condemnations!

The CAG could not fix the value of the precious materials already left our shores and the state of their uses – perhaps flourishing under illegal patents in other countries! That lists of valuable / disappearing herbs and farmer / tribal communities that are eligible for the share of sale proceeds etc have not been prepared even after lapse of so many years, is really shocking.

That the Chief of NBA who indulged in hasty approval for sale of number of herbs without any effort to get the share of IPR holders (whose lists also he had not cared to collect) etc, had conveniently left the Biodiversity Authority and got posted to another Authority (for welfare of Farmers!) shows the corrupt political background under which the like of him thrive!

People have been diverted by mega political scandals like the Spectrum and Adarsh in the news that this huge critical – and recurring – loss and irregularity of an elite society of Scientists has been completely side lined by media!!

You asked about the ‘difference’ between the political greed and the scientists’ greed! Well, it is like this, to me! We know the snake poison is deadly like the political corruption, which we expect and try to be wary of. But the scientist’s greed and corruption are like poisons in food items, like the Aflatoxin, etc which people unknowingly gulp and get affected. We take scientists as honest and toiling elites and prone to overlook the bugs among them!

There should be public pressure to save the biological wealth of the nation and earn the Intellectural Property Rights of the farmers who had supplied the stock for sale out of India, in accordance with the NBA approvals. The lists of the endangered and precious bio stock have to be prepared urgently along with the list of sources eligible for IPR shares! The legal wing of the Authority should monitor the use of the stock already exported and the way they are used (for breach of any patent rights of our nation)!

Edit: An independent Enquiry by team of scientists and Activists should assess the losses and punish the guilty elites. The approvals already given have to be reviewed urgently!

I’m taking the SAT in May, so I don’t know if my score for that will be better or not (hoping for around a 2100 but who knows) I’m also taking the US History, Math 1b, and English Literature subject tests in June and of course the AP exams in May but I have no idea what my score will be like.

Thanks for the help! Sorry if this kind of rambling/messy. I’d also love it if you could suggest some schools for me to look at.
To the person who told me I should take with my counselor, I have. However, she mainly quotes me stats from the Princeton Review which is helpful but I’d really like personal opinions from people who went some of these schools or know someone who did, ect.

John asks…

Should the governments of the world be investing in renewable energy instead of reducing CO2?

What kind of feed back on Bjorn Lomborg”s documentary (based on his book)”” Cool It”

The Expert answers:

Governments of the world should do both. You first need a revenue stream to invest in renewable energy. A great way to create that revenue stream is through a price on carbon emissions. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative states in the northeastern US invested 11% of the revenue stream from their carbon cap and trade system in renewable energy, for example (and 52% in energy efficiency to decrease energy demand to begin with).

As for a free market, I agree. We should stop subsidizing fossil fuels. Coal is immensely subsidized, both directly and indirectly. When you take the full life cycle costs of coal into account, including damage to environmental and public health, and contribution to climate change, it becomes more expensive than virtually every source of renewable energy. The link below probably isn’t working yet, but it will work tonight once I publish this article on Skeptical Science about the full cost of coal.

Bottom line is that it’s not an either-or scenario. We need to do both, and in fact doing one (reducing CO2) helps with the other (investing in renewable energy).

Helen asks…

Will America lead the world in renewable energy, or simply rely on tax cuts for the rich to lead the way?

The Expert answers:

F*CK the rich…they already have the technology that they are sitting on doing nothing with.

Depend on yourselves if you want something done.

Nancy asks…

which country follows the best practices in the use of renewable energy resources in the world?

The Expert answers:

Spain has really been pushing solar energy with huge incentives.

Joseph asks…

Why are governments around the world so reluctant to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources?

State The Following:
1: Answer
2: Reason (if applicable)
3: Any Other relevant Information

The Expert answers:

Because their respective economies would completely tank without fossil fuels! We absolutely need them to function.

Renewable energy is nothing but a warm and fuzzy fantasy as of now. They are all inefficient sources of energy, with the exception of the highly controversial nuclear energy, a completely clean source, but with baggage (i.e. Nuclear waste and the fear of a meltdown).

If they were viable solutions, we’d be using them right now. Don’t believe the garbage that the oil companies have politicians in the bag. If there were alternatives that were better, they would compete on the open market and beat out fossil fuels. Oil companies would have to buy off EVERYONE that invested in, produced, consumed, and advocated for clean renewable sources. Not even realistic.

Besides, the government is heavily subsidizing renewable energy already. So much for the oil companies buying off the politicians to subdue green energy. And there are dozens of huge corporations that are receiving government subsidies (e.g. GE) for and are promoting renewables.

The short answer is that fossil fuels are much more efficient and can deliver more energy than what renewables can (barring nuclear). Green energy sources are impractical and inefficient.

To get a meager amount of our energy needs from wind energy, we’d need wind farms with a landmass the size of MN and TX combined, all for a small percentage of our needs. Plus they can only operate in ideal conditions, 15-45 mph winds. Anything below 15 and they don’t spin, anything over 45 and they will break. And if the wind doesn’t blow, they are either idle or have a gas powered turbine that spins them.

Ethanol is another wasteful product. Ethanol deprives us of a food source, since farmers dedicate more of their crops for ethanol or only grow ethanol type crops (usually corn), which in turn leads to starvation in other poorer countries due to less supply, but it also drives up the cost of what is on the market. On top of that, more land is converted to cropland, which leads to deforestation and loss of habitat, erodes the topsoil and leeches nutrients, and lowers the water table, due to the high requirement for water during the ethanol processing. Beside all that, ethanol releases about as much energy as it takes to produce it, thus it is almost a zero sum gain.

The rest are even more inefficient than the two above (i.e. Solar and geo-thermal). And as for hydro, we don’t have enough river currents or dams to produce even close to what our energy requirements are.

All in all, renewable are nice in theory and for environmentalism, but in the real world they are impractical and inefficient. Unless we are talking nuclear energy, the most clean and renewable source there is. Problem is the stigma attached to it because of 2 meltdowns, and the problem of what to do with the waste.

Carol asks…

How long will the world be around if we use non-renewable energy?

The Expert answers:

We’re not all gonna die or anything like that.

But if we don’t plan a transition away from fossil fuels, life will be very unpleasant.

Mostly we’ll be poor, paying a whole lot for energy, dealing with flooded coastal areas, and trying desperately to feed ourselves as agriculture gets blasted by global warming.

Life will go on, but it will be very hard. We can do a whole lot better if we’re smart.

Joseph asks…

Is ignorance our greatest enemy in America?

I think the greatest threat to America has not changed since 1776: ignorance on the part of the general population. When people are not well educated, they’re easy to manipulate — that’s what gives corrupt politicians the leverage they need to control people. When people are not well educated, they support aggressive behavior overseas which deepens the cultural differences that drive terrorism. When people are not well educated, they don’t understand what’s happening with the economy, which makes them sitting ducks for greedy financial institutions. When people are not well educated, they fail to understand environmental issues and become ripe for picking by those who have hidden agendas regarding the environment.

Finally, when people are not well educated, they see poor, uneducated illegal immigrants as potential competitors for their jobs, which increases their fear, hatred, bigotry, and unreasonable attitudes about immigration reform.

So I generalize: our biggest enemy remains, and has always been, ignorance.

The Expert answers:

Education is essential if people are to participate in modern complex democracies, like our own. It doesn’t mean everyone needs a college degree. Libraries are great places to educate yourself… And free!

The reason ignorance is such a poison pill to our republic is when the masses vote without intense study of the issues, without a political philosophy of their own, without the understanding of how the government itself works, they often do more harm than good.

Daniel asks…

Old John Ritter movie that featured an eco-future America riding around on bikes?

John Ritter made this comedy movie (maybe in the early 80s?) about a post-energy crisis America riding around on bicycles, and I think in the opening scene, you see a Volkswagen Beetle car half-buried in the ground and made into a small ‘mobile home’ type of thing…it was a parody on how America would look if they took environmental issues to heart…can anyone remember the name of the movie??? thanks…

The Expert answers:

This is the 1979 movie “Americathon”. I enjoyed this movie and still have it in my collection.

Linda asks…

How has America’s economic prosperity affected consumer waste and pollution?

No one had to tell our grandmothers to “reduce, reuse, and recycle” during the depression, as they did so out of necessity. After the economic boom following WWII the virtue of thrift was lost in an influx of cheap massed produced goods. It seems that during our current recession that people are rethinking their purchases out of either concern for the environment or reduced amount of disposable income. Do you think that environmental issues could be greatly reduced if people changed their spending ?

The Expert answers:

Absolutely yes. Prosperous countries became SIZE QUEENS and KINGS for too many years, by wiping the shelves of alluring stores filled with unnecessary products they can do without. They were cheap w/o thinking if surplus items were necessary and why not charge everything on their credit cards. If they had to pay cash for every item they buy, they wouldn’t pick even 1/3 of merchandise in their cart. So it’s all domino effects, Credit card companies, banking, manufacturers, middleman…All of them fed to one another along with mindless consumers created monstrosity waste byproduct pollution.

Yes, we have been digging our premature graves, these economic downturn had to happen to balance out the Law of Nature.
Now, consumers have spent out, no more borrowed money in advance, and they lost homes, moved in with their parents or apt where they have very little space to place unnecessary goods. Amen.

Our air will be cleaner soon, hopefully :):}

Mandy asks…

Is this the most ingenious alternative energy source yet discovered?

Its poop! How amazing that this could be the wave of the future. A totally renewable energy source!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/oukoe_uk_usa_energy_excrement_odd

The Expert answers:

The total amount of available feces could provide about 10% of current fossil fuel usage. But we would have to devise ways to get plant nutrients out of the feces and back to the fields that grow the food that made those feces. The soil would quickly die and with it our ability to produce the food without this return to the land.

We can get most of the plant nutrients out by just washing the feces, and returning the water back to the soil. This is already done. So the next step is taking the solid residue for energy production.

This still leaves us a need to produce the other 90% of our energy usage., but 10% is better than nothing, as long as we preserve our ability to grow crops to feed ourselves.

Paul asks…

How do the democrats and the repbulicans differ about solar power and other alternative energy?

I’d like a source like a .org, CNN, reliable news source, ect. please!

The Expert answers:

I disagree with Bonzi to say the least. Sen Obama’s plan to tax oil companies will only increase our dependence of imported oil. This action will i no way benefit the consumer. Just the government, the suppliers will simply raise prices to cover the difference so there will be no “upside” to the end users. By increasing internal production we will influence the markets and prices will decrease as a result of a greater supply. Simple economics really. The US should invest in an upgraded power distribution network(the grid) and also in just about any domestic fuels. Nuclear, wind, solar, coal and oil. Nuclear in my opinion is the short term answer as is the plan put forth by T B Pickens. Nothing should be overlooked as a path to the future. As to the difference between D’s and R’s I see none really. Each party is owned by one “special interest” or another. Letting oil companies drill without oversight is not the answer but then again not allowing drilling and being held hostage by extreme environmentalists is not acceptable either.

William asks…

Is alternative energy really the way forward or would it be better to build more nuclear plants like France?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-west-wales-14847610

q 11/49

The Expert answers:

I firmly believe the best way for us in the UK is to have our Government build, secure, own and run any/all Nuclear plants.

A highly paid staff of scientific experts could work in the publicly owned plants and implement the strictest of guidelines to ensure that all plants were safe and well run; that is in my opinion all that would be necessary for the UK to be fully independent of outside pressure for energy.

This method would be our only safe way to operate because all private firms would inevitably be forever pushing the safety boundaries to gain extra profits… It is their way unfortunately, profit has to rise year on year or the investors withdraw and leave the plant bereft of safety and funding, making yet another mess for the public to fix when in fact the public purse could have invested in the very beginning and all could be well safe.
Well designed modern nuclear is safe in the hands of experts firewalled from political dogma and government alone.

Mark asks…

How can the use of alternative sources of energy be encouraged?

“US President Barack Obama said on Saturday that his administration will hand out nearly $2 billion (£1.3bn) for new solar plants that will create thousands of jobs and increase the use of renewable energy sources.”
http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/index.php/news/content/view/full/92353

The Expert answers:

Yes anything that reduces western democracys dependency on oil should be encouraged

Donald asks…

Have you heard about Moore’s Law in relation to alternative energy products?

Moore’s Law is the law which states that the number of transistors which can fit on a microchip doubles about every six months. This is why computers have improved so dramatically in the last twenty years. German technology company Siemens stated in a recent press release that Moore’s Law seems to apply to Solar Technologies as well, and that modern day solar panels are at a comparative stage of development to an old fashioned Apple IIe that many Gen-X-ers learned to type on in elementary school.

If this statement proves to be true, and if solar technology does make such tremendous advances, what kinds of laws will have to be put into place to prevent Conservative vandals from destroying solar installations just because they’ve been trained by FOX News propaganda to hate alternative energy? Do you believe existing laws against vandalism will suffice or do you believe the interstate commerce statutes that apply to power lines should also apply to solar installations owned by individual homeowners?
@ John D – if those homeowners are living off the grid there would be no way to apply those laws but if the homeowners are connected to the electrical grid in an area where net-metering is permitted then that grid connection would make those laws applicable.

Susan asks…

Geothermal energy is often the great hope of renewable energy as it can be continuously and reliably produced?

Geothermal energy is often the great hope of renewable energy as it can be continuously and reliably produced 24/7. While it it has the best potential, it is very limited geographically. The best geothermal resources are in Alaska and California, and the best potential resources are west of the Rockies. How do we overcome the geographic limitations of geothermal energy?

The Expert answers:

The simple answer to your question is: ‘dig deeper in the ground.’ There are several companies out there at present that are willing to install geothermal energy suppies into the home. I live in England and I have had pumps installed in my gym. I save hundreds of pounds each year in electricity bills. Unfortunately I can only source my knowledge onto the e-book that I purchased but if you have any more questions about this please email me and I will answer the question to the best of my ability. Hope this helps.

Charles asks…

How to purchase and use Renewable Energy Certificates?

Can someone please explain if and how I can buy renewable energy certificates for my apartment electricity use. My local energy company does not currently provide renewable energy and I am under the impression I can buy certificates from renewable energy companies and use those certificates to pay for my current electric bill.

Can you please explain this process.

The Expert answers:

It’s a pointless exercise because all of the electricity comes from the same generators connected to the same grid.

Donald asks…

How renewable energy solar power works?

My father is asking me to post a question about this.He is planning to buy an alternative renewable energy resources. Is it true that you will save electricity from alternative home energy solutions? Any suggestions and help on this post is highly appreciated thanks.

The Expert answers:

You can use renewable energy sources since it can be replenished in a short period of time. A the same time you can help the environment. And the best is it will never run out of sources of renewable energy as long as humans will exist. I found this website it says http://fastfreehomeenergy.com/alternative-energy-home.html “Many people (including myself) have reportedly slashed their monthly electricity bill by up to 80% through the methods mentioned above. If we can do it, so can you.”. Just check this out for more details.
I hope i was bale to contribute a bit on your question.

Maria asks…

What are the effects of renewable energy used in 3rd world business?

For a graduate project in Asia, I am looking at renewable energy and its effects on growing businesses. I want to look at developed and developing businesses that use renewable energy. Can anyone point me in the right direction with regards to finding areas in Asia to research? I wanted to stick with 3rd world.

The Expert answers:

The best renewable energy is oil & gas. Our plants recycle Co2 into oil & gas.So we will never run out of oil.

Richard asks…

How is renewable energy good for the economy?

Can renewable energy truly be good for the economy, and how so?

The Expert answers:

Renewable energy can be good once we have a storage system to store the sun’s, wind’s, etc’s energy and use it when we need it.

It is good for the economy because it is getting more and more expensive to dig up conventionals.

Robert asks…

How can i start a planned community like a sustainable living community?

Minus the modern spiritual hippy mumbo jumbo.

The Expert answers:

All projects take time money and energy. Enough money can be used to decrease the time and energy requirements by hiring experts. Developers build planned communities all the time, the trick is doing it and making a buck at it. The roadblocks are enormous, the payoffs immense.
Not sure quite what you are describing. I have an outline for a way to build a self-constructed, sustainable floating city. But its not what I’m pursing right now.

William asks…

What incentives does your local/state/federal govt offer to encourage environmentally sustainable living?

eg rebates for installing solar hot water or rainwater tanks, free light globes etc. I want to make a case to my city council (who do very little in this way) so I’d like to know the government body as well as the incentive they offer. Thanks

The Expert answers:

They do nothing but tell me use stuff that doesn’t exist. My solar hot water….it’s dark 6 months a year here. My Hydrogen powered car…not enough electricity to make hydrogen, they are all talk and no action.

Maria asks…

What can one do in day to day life for a sustainable living?

What lifestyle changes one can bring to lead a Sustainable, environment friendly life

The Expert answers:

I made a change in my energy use. I installed the Temp$aver System from CGA of Southwest Florida which controls and watches over my A/C unit. If any Doors or Windows are left open, which happens all the time with a house full of kids, the Temp$aver system shuts off the A/C unit preventing wasted energy. We saved over 45% on our utility bill after we had this installed. They also have this new system called the “Thermonator” which watched over your hot water heater and shut it off when nobody’s around. This company has a few energy efficient devices to help you live more sustainable and save you money at the same time!

David asks…

What is sustainable urban living? i need it for my geography lesson.?

for my geography lesson i need to know what sustainable urban living is. help

The Expert answers:

Leaving a smaller footprint, for one. Recycling, using renewable energy sources such as solar water heating and solar PV, using public transportation rather than a car, living in a smaller space, conserving energy in the winter/summer (heat/AC), using farmers marketing for produce and meats.

Mandy asks…

Does anyone have a personal experience in sustainable living/farming?

what was your experience and is it still up and running? what problems did occur? what rewards did you find?

The Expert answers:

Yes I have been making my living doing just that for the past 17 years.

My farm is very much up and running

Problems? Weather is a big problem most years and specially this year. Long hours in the field, strange work schedule. Not making enough money so have to live cheaply and carry no debt

Love working for myself, love the food I produce, love working with plants and animals, love marketing, love to live cheaply and carry no debt

What is a “green” or “eco-friendly” fabric to use for upholstering kitchen furniture (removable slipcovers)?

Where can I buy it? It must be washable!

The Expert answers:

Fabric made of hemp with eco friendly inks.

Robert asks…

Eco-friendly materials for furniture?

i need a ecofriendly material for making a children’s bed. any sort of wood would be fine but i am on a tight budget. i am searching everywhere but even if i do find a nice wood it wont have any sort or price. the bed i am making would be easier with large pieces of this wood and i will be painting it. it should be about 3cm thick (1 inch).

if anyone could help me find a product like this it would be so great. i have looked for a while but still have found nothing.

The Expert answers:

Don’t know if you know about recycled plastic lumber, looks like wood.

Check out the source link or search Google to find out where to find it.

Sandra asks…

What kind of fixtures are there, for like, say, attaching together pieces of a chair, that are eco-friendly?

I have a product design exam coming up, and its somthing to do with ecofriendly‘ness and furniture. So i was wondering what different ways are there of “attaching parts” not using screws and bolts.. and can u get any enviromently glues?? that are water proof and reli strong?

The Expert answers:

With no offense meant at all you could find hundreds of sites, related, in a general WWW search, using keywords.

I’m as GREEN as anyone I know, but your Q largely depends on types of furniture and their use.

Certainly some thorough knowledge of various JOINTS would help you. I suspect before there was GLUE there was furniture.

It might also depend on how YOu define ECO friendly. Obviously a molded vinyl chair could be stable, and a one piece unit, but would remain in a land fill for eternity.

Joints is where I’d start if I was you, and the general engineering of a piece knowing it’s stress points, sway, etc.

GLUE might be ECO OK, but not so effective in building. IE: Elmers makes a carpenter grade GLUE, and it functions well, is probably not so toxic, but at some point, through use, can fail.

Steven Wolf
just my 2 “sense”

Beyond that, given that our society rarely wants LOG furniture or primitive trappings in a home, the engineering alone is the challenge. In primitive methods creating contemporary pieces.

Environment friendly sofa and love seat?

I plan to buy new living room furniture. I wanted to buy some thing elegant and environment (or eco) friendly. I could use some suggestions, which furniture store is best to look for eco friendly furniture in Tx?

How to be eco-friendly with everything?

I would love to be ecofriendly with my clothes,furniture,make-up,etc.Does anyone know any brands that make ecofriendly products?I am a down to earth kind of girl and would love to start being more green.Any suggestions appreciated!

The Expert answers:

There are many different ways the best is to be informed about your purchases, always look at lifecycle costs of everything you buy. Look at where the product comes from favor local items, how many uses you can get from an item (single use items are almost always poor choices economically and environmentally)

The first site has suggestions for everyday life the second has green items for sale.

What are the environmental issues that the earth are facing right now?

If you’re watching television news, can you tell me what are the environmental issues that the earth are facing right now?

The Expert answers:

The Earth isn’t facing any issues at all. It’s just doing what it’s always been doing.

It the humans that are having issues. They think the Earth should stay the same, but it doesn’t.

Probably the number one gripe of the humans is “global warming”.

James asks…

What are good environmental issues to write a persuasive essay on?

I need to write a persuasive essay on environmental issues such as farm animals or zoo breeding. Any ideas? (and NOT global warming!) Any links?

The Expert answers:

Question: How does meat consumption contribute to rainforest depletion?

Answer: The United States imports roughly 200 million pounds of beef from Central America every year. Aside from the fuel used in transport, grazing land is needed for all of these animals. Where does all that land come from in a densely forested region? The answer: from clear-cutting forests and rainforest A Smithsonian study estimates that the necessity for more grazing land means that every minute of every day, a land area equivalent to seven football fields is destroyed in the Amazon basin(1).
For each hamburger that originated from animals raised on rainforest land, approximately 55 square feet of forest have been destroyed. And its not just the rainforest. In the United States, more than 260 million acres of forest have been clear-cut for animal agriculture (2). With increased per capita meat consumption, and an ever growing population, we can only expect to see more deforestation in the future.

What are some environmental issues concerning airplanes?

What are some environmental issues concerning airplanes? How do airplanes affect the environment?

The Expert answers:

They aren’t the best thing for the environment (but neither are animals themselves; they breath out CO2)

Fact of the matter is there are a million others things that cause more pollution than planes.

Sandy asks…

How can I relate environmental issues to my peers?

I’m doing a speech for speech class about environmental issues (between overfishing, deforestation or invasive species) and I need to find a way to relate this to my fellow classmates.
My professor has asked me to find a way to relate it to my classmates (one of those topics) to make them interested however I’ve been having trouble with it.

Anybody have suggestions of how I can do this?

The Expert answers:

Size can hit home – the magnitude of losing something wonderous (only one species of bananna is all anyone in the US will ever eat, because of farming practices – this is true, look it up) or the growth of something hideous (eating songbirds is so popular in Europe that soon the skies will be silent – also true)
So, big numbers can be very impressive if used wisely. One pointer I ‘d suggest when working with abstract statistical numbers is to make it concrete for your audience by using metaphors and such. For example – if the subject is about species loss you can draw a comparison: “it’s like taking ten-thousand fish out of the ocean on the hour, every hour, for two years.” That’s always helpful.

Susan asks…

Why have environmental issues appeared on the international agenda?

Is it because of the need to improve the globe so as to conquer issues including global warming, climate change etc? This question is largely focused on Asia. Do you think it would be right to go into detail about these environmental issues and explain how they are affecting the rest of the world?

Thanks very much!

The Expert answers:

Environmental issues are negative aspects of human activity on the biophysical environment. Environmentalism, a social and environmental movement that started in the 1960s, addresses environmental issues through advocacy, education and activism.

A recent major report was the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, with input from 1200 scientists and released in 2005, which showed the high level of impact that humans are having on ecosystem services.

Main findings

1. Over the past 50 years, humans have changed ecosystems more rapidly and extensively than in any comparable period of time in human history, largely to meet rapidly growing demands for food, fresh water, timber, fiber and fuel. This has resulted in a substantial and largely irreversible loss in the diversity of life on Earth.

2. The changes that have been made to ecosystems have contributed to substantial net gains in human well-being and economic development, but these gains have been achieved at growing costs in the form of:

the degradation of many ecosystem services
increased risks of nonlinear changes,
the exacerbation of poverty for some groups of people.

These problems, unless addressed, will substantially diminish the benefits that future generations obtain from ecosystems.

3. The degradation of ecosystem services could grow significantly worse during the first half of this century and is a barrier to reducing global poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

4. The challenge of reversing the degradation of ecosystem while meeting increasing demands for ecological services can be partially met under some scenarios considered by the MA, but will involve significant changes in policies, institutions and practices that are not currently under way.

Many options exist to conserve or enhance specific ecosystem services in ways that reduce negative trade-offs or that provide positive synergies with other ecosystem services. The bottom line of the MA findings is that human actions are depleting Earth’s natural capital, putting such strain on the environment that the ability of the planet’s ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted. At the same time, the assessment shows that with appropriate actions it is possible to reverse the degradation of many ecosystem services over the next 50 years, but the changes in policy and practice required are substantial and not currently underway.

The largest international agency, set up in 1972, is the United Nations Environment Programme. The International Union for Conservation of Nature brings together 83 states, 108 government agencies, 766 Non-governmental organizations and 81 international organizations and about 10,000 experts and scientists from countries around the world.. International non-governmental organizations include Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and World Wide Fund for Nature. Governments enact environmental policy and enforce environmental law and this is done to differing degrees around the world.

FDR’s WPA: What should Obama do?

Millions were unemployed in the 1930s. FDR instituted the WPA – a U.S. government employment agency that helped build infrastructure across the country. Los Angeles’ Colisseum was built by the WPA.

Obama should institute something similar, both to rebuild America’s crumbling infrastructure (e.g., the fallen bridge in MN) as well as in alternative energy.

The Expert answers:

Obama should concede to John McCain and do our country a real favor instead of just making us even more socialist!

William asks…

The Oil Crash: Who’s prepared?

The latest measurements confirm that the world’s oil and natural gas supplies are running out too fast. At some time between 2010 and 2020 the world’s supply of oil and gas will fall below the level required to meet international demand.

The US government is aware that we are about to endure a disastrous international energy shortage. According to Dr James McKenzie, a senior member of the climate change programme at the World Resources Institute in Washington, USA: “That’s why we went to war in Iraq.”

We always knew the world’s oil reserves would run out eventually. The oil was formed by natural geological processes which occurred over millions of years. Oil consumption presently exceeds 25 billion barrels a year and demand continues to spiral upward, out of control. The outcome is inevitable.

In the 21st Century we rely on oil (petrol) and gas for transport – cars, lorries, ships, aircraft – as well as electrical power. We cannot survive without oil and gas, and when the supply runs out the great engine of Western civilization will finally grind to a halt. We are heading for an event that will be remembered as one of the great disasters of human history, and life is going to get harder for everybody as the day of reckoning draws nearer.

In the years ahead, wars will be fought over oil and fuel as the oil-dependent superpowers struggle in vein to preserve our unsustainable way of life. We are entering a period of great change and there are be difficult times ahead. The process has already begun. Students of prophecy will be familiar with certain relevant verses from Christian scripture concerning the signs of the end times (Matt. 24.8; Mk 13.8, Rom. 8.22; Rev. 12.03, 21.1-4). As it was translated in 1961 in the New English Bible: “With these things, the birth pangs of the new age begin” (Mt.24:8; Mk.13:8). Whether you are religious or secular, you should be aware that the tide of history is turning.

In North America, where we use far more oil than anywhere else on Earth, the vast majority (71%) of electrical power generation is entirely dependent on fossil fuels – coal (52%), gas (16%), and oil (3%). The world’s natural gas is running out along with the oil, and the coal supply is not unlimited either. Nuclear energy contributes only one-fifth to the US power network, and 7% of power is hydroelectric. Only 2% of US electricity production is from renewable sources. As we continue to burning up the world’s dwindling fossil energy sources at a terrifying rate, we simultaneously unleash catastrophic damage to the natural environment.

The Insider recently reported a wave of four major electrical power outages which struck the US; then the UK; followed by Denmark and Sweden; and then Italy, Switzerland, Austria and France. The effects only lasted a few hours, but each case was the biggest power failure in the history of the affected country. These massive power cuts were separated by a matter of days. The governments were only practicing this time. This is just the beginning.

It would be prudent to pursue alternative energy sources before it is too late, but the oil corporations will never allow this to happen. So important is oil as a resource that it brings great wealth and power to those who control it. Consequently, our corrupt politicians, whose power is lavishly funded with oil money, prefer to serve the short-term interests of greedy oil executives than the long-term interests of ordinary people like you. But as long as we have food in our bellies and entertainment to keep us busy, why should we care? Thus, it is the immorality and indifference of our species that ultimately leads to our own demise.

Nothing lasts forever. Like all the great civilizations in the past, ours has a limited life-span. A few years from now the Westernized world will reach the point where there is no longer enough fuel to sustain civilization in its present form. This will literally be the end of civilization as we know it.

The Expert answers:

Biofuel will take over

Is climate change really even an environmental issue?

I didn’t source these quotes because they are freely available all over the Internet. I also didn’t check every one to see if it’s authentic. However, just based on how often they show up, I’m going to assume that at least the large majority are and that’s enough for you to answer the question.

Quote from Club of Rome: “In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill….All these dangers are caused by human intervention….and thus the “real enemy, then, is humanity itself….believe humanity requires a common motivation, namely a common adversary in order to realize world government. It does not matter if this common enemy is “a real one or….one invented for the purpose.”

Not only is it real, it’s here, and its effects are giving rise to a frighteningly new global phenomenon: the man-made natural disaster”.

Quote by David Graber, scientist U.S. Nat’l Park Services: “We have become a plague upon ourselves and upon the Earth. It is cosmically unlikely that the developed world will choose to end its orgy of fossil energy consumption, and the Third World its suicidal consumption of landscape. Until such time as Homo Sapiens should decide to rejoin nature, some of us can only hope for the right virus to come along.”

Great quotes, although the last one is cut off.

Funny how the real socialists dismiss this as unimportant. To dismiss this is to misunderstand the real intent of this global warming agenda.

The environment and planet are not important at all to these types. Control is all they want. Control over every aspect of human life. The environmental movement was taken over by displaced soviet communists back in the 60’s. They use this as a tool to downgrade society.

It’s a slow bleed, but they are very patient. They know that eventually they will get everyone to give into the socialism and fascism they believe in.

Linda asks…

Is this why Democrats want to push through cap and trade before the end of the month.?

Cap and Trade is being shoved through because of “man made” global warming. Al Gore has refused to debate this theory (yes, I know what a theory is) and told Congress last month that “this is the single most important piece of legislation ever.” Of course, Al Gore’s business has invested over 1 billion dollars in “clean” technology and carbon credits so he just may be “wishful”, if not just greedy. (My opinion)

However, the Earth actually appears to be cooling and the man made global warming “theory” is being questioned by more scientists everyday. Of course, the liberal media machine of NBC (who is owned by GE, who will benefit from this bill as well…….) keeps the fear rolling, refusing to debate the issue, let alone question it.

· Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren’t quite understanding what their robots are telling them.

This is puzzling in part because here on the surface of the Earth, the years since 2003 have been some of the hottest on record. But Josh Willis at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the oceans are what really matter when it comes to global warming.

In fact, 80 percent to 90 percent of global warming involves heating up ocean waters. They hold much more heat than the atmosphere can. So Willis has been studying the ocean with a fleet of robotic instruments called the Argo system. The buoys can dive 3,000 feet down and measure ocean temperature. Since the system was fully deployed in 2003, it has recorded no warming of the global oceans.

I know this goes on to say that the Earth can cool for a few years, even in a cycle of global warming. (Imagine that….weather cycles!) I am all for alternative energy, as well as clean air and water. What I am opposed to is this cap and trade that is being shoved through under the guise of “man made” global warming, which will cause increased prices on everything from gas to food, and of course energy costs.(no to mention job losses)
