George asks…

What is the most renewable energy source?

Im doing this project on energy sources and I need to know what is the most work done on the most renewable energy sources.

The Expert answers:

Biofuels, Biomass, Geothermal, Solar power, Tidal power, Wave power, Wind power are other types of renewable energy. So, the most renewable energy source is Hydro power.

Charles asks…

When is the renewable energy boom going to be?

I want to know when the renewable energy boom will likely happen, in what year and when I should consider buying into their stocks with options?

The Expert answers:

So you want us to predict the future for you?

Laura asks…

What is the difference between a renewable energy source and a nonrenewable energy source? Give specific e?

What is the difference between a renewable energy source and a nonrenewable energy source? Give me some specific examples.

The Expert answers:

A renewable energy source is one that naturally replenishes itself as it is consumed. Solar energy, for example, will continue to make its way to us for as long as the sun continues to burn, whether we harness it or not. The same could be said about wind, hydro, biomass, etc. (though these are really just indirect forms of solar energy – without the sun, there would be no wind, the water cycle would not function, and plant life would not grow). The only other renewable energy input that the earth sees as a whole is geothermal – heat energy from its own core (though this will also eventually run out).

Another possible example of a renewable energy source could be landfill gas, though this is debatable. As long as humans continue to create a huge amount of organic waste, I guess, then we should be able to continue capturing methane from it.

A non-renewable source, on the other hand, will not be replenished once it is used. Fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal), for example, are considered non-renewable, because they took millions of years to form. Once a barrel of oil is brought up from the earth and burned, it will not be replenished for a long, long time.

Carol asks…

Is Renewable Energy a Partisan Issue, one that Democrats should like and Republicans should reject?

Seems like this is the case. Why would Republicans act like Renewable Energy is bad? Is it because the Republican Party (and Democrats too) are serving the Petroleum & Nuclear Industries, because those industries are financing their campaigns? Why would you approach renewable energy like it is bad out of some displaced loyalty to your party? Have you ever really investigated RE for yourself?

The Expert answers:

Republicans feed their Big Oil Billionaires first – this is their only real rule. The rest of their story is bullsh*t.

Daniel asks…

Why alternative energy sources will lead us nowhere…?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070220/us_nm/usa_gasoline_price_dc

Price of oil is dropping…yet gas prices are rising…??!!

Don’t get too excited about alternative energy prospects. Not only are the laws of physics non-negotiable, but the forces that be will make SURE anything that comes on mainstream will be MONOPOLIZED…see the increase in corn prices? Tied to Ethanol production(which is basically worthless “filler” to stretch out volume).

So if we go Solar to re-charge batteries for electric cars…a solar grid will NOW be…$10,000.

Look at the price of diesel…costs MUCH less to produce than gas(and they use a LOT of this stuff in industry), yet strangely enough, it costs about 50 cents MORE than a gallon of regular gas(Big-Oil did NOT want you to see any real savings in your MPG, so they took it out of your pocket right now).

I can ONLY imagine what a battery pack wil cost at the Toyota dealership when that Prius battery pack goes 86…half the cost of a car?
If you don’t get more out of the system than you put in…that’s a LOSS…regardless if it’s solar, wind, etc. This is Physics 101…

The Expert answers:

Brazil – Sugar based ethanol. Next question.

Charles asks…

any michigan residents who use alternative energy resources? especially the flint/saginaw area?

i read the mother earth news regularly. one thing i notice time and again with them are the great articles on alternative energy resources. i have never seen any of these great ideas in michigan and i am wondering if there are any folks in michigan who have utilized any system with an effort to get off the grid or at least significantly reduce thier need for grid energy. i’m especially interested in the flint/saginaw area (southeastern lower mich) since that is where i live. what system do you use? do you like it? was it expensive/worth the effort? ect.. we have five wooded acres to use and are trying to assist in our huge heating bills by heating with wood to help our furnace, but are interested in learning more about grid free living or the system that lets you sell your extra energy back to the grid. does michigan even have this available? please, no hecklers or nasty comments. thanks

The Expert answers:

The The Energy Office of Michigan website linked below offers tons of resources on “topics such as wind, solar or biomass energy, energy technology resources, and financial incentives that may be available to assist those interested in pursuing energy efficiency or renewable energy systems” in the state of Michigan.

Hope you find it useful.

Ken asks…

How is Obama’s push for alternative energy a bad thing?

I’m noticing that Fox News keeps mentioning that Obama is “exploiting” the oil crisis to push an alternative energy plan. How is this a bad thing when:

1) We really DO need to lessen our dependence on oil…and especially foreign oil

2) Crisis usually sparks change. 9/11 lead to the Patriot Act, but rarely is it argued that Bush “exploited” the tragedy of 9/11 in order to make it.

So why is Obama wrong for using this incident as an example for why we need to push for alternative energy faster?
So far, most of the answer refer to the “next step” as to what energy sources we should look into. Of course, nobody knows that yet and Obama’s not claiming to know….he’s saying we should push to make its discovery and use a priority.

MY QUESTION WAS: Why is Obama “exploiting” this crisis a bad thing, considering the 1) & 2) examples I gave?

The Expert answers:

If he was supporting a referendum or a official endorsement of alternative energy…fine.

What he wants to do (and it’s in the Carbon Tax bill coming up in the legislature) is to create carbon credits and tax carbon dioxide outputs. This is a horrible idea that will cripple and kill vast sectors of our economy.

Let the free market address the oil crisis. When gas went up a few years ago…a huge leap in energy efficent cars hit the market. The private market works!

Lets keep government to watching our enemies and enacting diplomacy.

James asks…

why does no one want to invest seriously in alternative energy?

http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/world-oil-prices-more-than-two-us-dollars-higher-20081110-5ljq.html

further down in the story youll see opec are considering yet another production cut to manipulate crude price. surely this is enough of a reason to want alternative energy. even if you dont believe in global warming and all that surely you dont want to be held to ransom by oil producing countrys? so why does no government seem keen to seriously invest in clean alternative energy that is renewable and will be cheap as in the long run compared to the way oil prices are heading in the future

The Expert answers:

Are you one of those nutzos who figure that if we’d have spent $3 trillion on alternative energy instead of $3 trillion in Iraq we’d be energy independent by now???

KEEP DREAMING!!!!!

Jenny asks…

Is the Obama administration repeating the same mistakes as the Carter WH did, regarding energy policy?

The Obama administration is repeating the mistakes of President Jimmy Carter’s failed energy policies, which marred his term and stigmatized the 1970s. They are leading us straight into another national energy disaster.

Key members of the Obama administration believe this friction abroad underscores the need to move away from oil and gas entirely and shift to boutique forms of alternative energy. Their lack of political will to drill for oil and gas compromises our national security and jeopardizes economic recovery.

It skirts the colossal elephant in the room: Oil and natural gas produced here in the United States are likely to still account for at least 57 percent of domestic energy consumption by 2035. Not to mention that energy production here can relieve the U.S. from the dangerous grip of foreign petro dictators.

Unfortunately, this administration’s Department of the Interior, with the most anti-oil-and-gas record in U.S. history, is sabotaging any real chance of avoiding the pending energy crisis because of its continued hold on deepwater drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Expert answers:

Carter had no Failed Energy policies. The 1970s Oil Embargo preceded his Administration. He wisely set forth new initiatives, that were, unfortunately, cancelled by Reagan.

Had we allowed Carter’s foresight to be followed through, we would be much more independent of foreign energy

Michael asks…

Eco-friendly flip-flop shoes? Ponder this…?

Which is the more ecofriendly alternative:
1) Buy a pair of “green” flip flops (made of hemp and other organic materials) via internet order (delivered via UPS to residence) for $29, or
2) Buy a pair of synthetic flip flops from the local Old Navy outlet for $6 and donate $23 to an eco-charity or use it to buy $23 worth of carbon offsets?

The Expert answers:

It’s 2 by a wide margin.

The synthetics sequester carbon because polymers are hydrocarbon based. They will last far longer than the hemp and required less energy to produce.

Like bio fuels hemp requires burning of carbon based fuels as a part of the cultivation process.

Transportation is just slightly in favor of the synthetics because bulk is more energy efficient than the individual shipping by UPS. Still you are driving to the store.

Packaging is another plus for the synthetics. If the hemp come in kraft paper corrugated box that is very eco non friendly.

The buying carbon offsets or donating to an eco charity puts the synthetics way, way, way over the top

Eco-friendly shopping in and around New York City/New Jersey?

Hello. I’m interested in buying ecofriendly shoes, as well as ecofriendly clothing. (But shoes are a higher priority right now.) I don’t like the idea of ordering shoes online, since I think it’s important to try them on first. And my online research hasn’t yielded any especially useful information. Does anybody know of good places in the tri-state area to shop for these items? Any information about your experiences at these shops (quality of products, prices, service, etc) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

William asks…

What are some biological or environmental issues I could write an essay about?

What are some interesting/important biological or environmental issues I could write about? Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Maybe the Greenhouse Effect, and therefore global warming? That seems to be very pertinent to today’s environmental issues

Helen asks…

When did environmental issues become a widespread concern?

And what was the general view of environmental issues in the 80s/early 90s?

The Expert answers:

Environmental issues have been a concern for hundreds of years in different forms and in different nations. The U.S. Started to pass legislation acts in 1972. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) was created in 1970. In the 1970s the public begin to take note of environmental issues. Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth started in the early 1970s. Earth Day started in the 1970s. In the 1960s is when environmental issues started to come into light in the United States, specifically air pollution and oil spills. From what I remember when I was young in the 1980s, environmental issues emerged more in the media in the late 80s. The Exxon Valdez spill was big news in 1989. The other issues that I remember were acid rain and air pollution, more specifically “NOx emission.” Environmental issues were a concern in the in the early 80s but it was not until the media started to cover more and more stories did it become a big concern. The media started to cover court cases covering environmental legal issues. “In the early 1980s, environmental justice emerged as a concept in the United States, fueled by a mounting disdain within Black, Hispanic and indigenous communities that were subject to hazardous and polluting industries located predominantly in their neighborhoods.[5] This prompted the launch of the Environmental justice movement which adopted a civil rights and social justice approach to environmental justice [6] and grew organically from dozens, even hundreds, of local struggles, events and a variety of other social movements.” (Wiki) In the late 80s and early 90s more people were involved and voiced their opinions on environmental issues.Today I hear more about environmental issues than ever before, especially about global warming effect.

Donald asks…

What are some of the most impacting environmental issues in FL due to recycling and waste habits?

Im writing a research paper on recycling in FL. One of the sections in my paper regards environmental issues our state is experiencing because of good/bad recycling practices. However I am struggling to find specific info on the web relative to these issues. Any info that may help?

The Expert answers:

First, I’d ask myself what makes Florida unique in their approach to waste management. One thing pops to mind – the depth to groundwater. I think Florida generally has groundwater very close to the surface in much of the state. Therefore, any kind of land disposal practices, or recycling activities that could potentially release to the ground can have a dramatic impact on water quality.

Another thing about Florida that comes to mind, is that it has a lot of shoreline, hence many boaters. One little known aspect of this – at least to many people, is that boats of a certain size are required to carry safety flares. Safety flares, by law, have a shelf life, after which the flares must be replaced. Often the flares being replaced are ok to use as flares, but many boaters dispose of them inappropriately. That’s why many many thousands of flares wind up dumped in the water. Florida is one state that has developed on a county-by-county basis a way to manage these out of date flares. They get collected and burned in burn units, which just vent the emissions to the air. This can be an air problem.

Mark asks…

Do environmental issues spawn mostly from organizations/companies or from everyday people?

I’m trying to get an idea for a paper i must write for an environmental studies class, but i’m having trouble with the topic: The roles of structural and/or organizational factors in creating and/or solving environmental problems.
Can anyone think of any issues where this is prevalent?
The paper will be around 10 pages in length.
Also, i know most environmental problems spawn from organizations/corporations, but what do you think a good topic would be? It also must be topic that is fairly easy to research, as many sources will be needed, mostly form academic journals.

The Expert answers:

Extreme environmentalism was spawned from socialists and communists intent on changing the way we live our lives.

Ken asks…

What stops Canada and Canadians from addressing environmental issues?

What stops Canada and Canadians from addressing environmental issues?
I think we could be a green country someday but what stops us from being so?
This is a serious question by the way, it’s not homework. I want to know what the young people think.

The Expert answers:

I’m not a young person but the answer to your question is clearly money and politics. Our prime minister and many of his MPs are from Alberta which gets about half its income from the tar sands. No way they are ever going to seriously slow the booming expansion going on up north. All politicians to pay lip service to environmental issues but they duck for cover if votes are threatened. Take the cruel Canadian commercial seal hunt carried out by non-native Newfoundlands every spring. It involves the savage slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seal pups for their skins and has been condemned around the world. Well, every single member of parliament supports it because they’re all afraid of losing votes in Atlantic Canada. I can’t imagine many of them picking up a club and crushing a baby seals’ skull themselves, but they’ll happily subsidize others doing so if it gets them a few votes. Our current politicians won’t be around when the real environmental consequences swing back at us and they know it. Only the next few years of profit and power matter to them.

what career should I choose to work on builiding science and renewable energy?

Hi I would like to work on building science like install panel solars, wind and you know building science also I want to star a business sell products of renewable energy like solar panels, wind, hydro, etc.

So which career can fit in those jobs? thanks

The Expert answers:

Good for you! If you like to actually work on and reinvent the renewable technological devices yourself, you should get into electrical engineering in order to understand how everything works in an electrical system and further invent ways to improve it. You always can start a business later one after you have some good working experience with the renewable energy products.

how can renewable energy stop the bubble conomics?

i listened to obama today about the new bill being passed to “help” build new jobs. Even though more people will most likely lose jobs. But what i’m confused on is he said that moving towards renewable energy will help in stopping the bubble and burst economics we are in.

Can someone explain to me how bubble economics, which is a result of planned economics (aka the federal reserve), has anything to do with renewable energy?

The Expert answers:

It can’t – it has nothing to do with the supply of money and credit, which is the primary cause of economic bubbles.

Oil didn’t go over $140/bbl because of anything structural to the oil industry – oil prices spiked for the same reason that all commodity prices (gold, platinum, palladium, copper, etc…) spiked: the dramatic increase in the supply of money and credit, as the Fed maintained historically low interest rate targets and Bush kept raising spending to pay for two wars, a new Cabinet Dept., a new entitlement program and increases in domestic spending. Now Obama is increasing that spending by an order of magnitude and the Fed has cut rates even further. That is why commodity prices are coming back even though economic activity is not.

what are the benefits of sustainable development?

this is a college project…..the topic is- “sustainable development is the development that lasts for generations.”justify-

can any one please help me out with this?

The Expert answers:

I don’t completely understand what you’re asking, but here’s my point of view:

Clinton wanted to pass a BTU tax of $16/month per resident. This tax was essentially an emissions tax. It wasn’t passed. Looking back on it, only a decade later, it would have been a brilliant policy.

If we don’t implement sustainable policies and developments, we’ll be looking back on the past and regretting it. I don’t want to be on my asthma-related death bed feeling guilty for not doing something to change the outcome of the future.

Your definition of ecologically sustainable development? And how do we achieve this?

The Expert answers:

I think that the media puts to much emphasis on going green now, and making it seem as if we do it will solve all our problems in the next decade, I’m not saying we shouldn’t, because we defiantly need to protect the environment, but I don’t believe its a fragile to be shattered by a hundred or so years of extreme carbon emissions, so, yeah, protect the environment, drive a hybrid, don’t pollute, but don’t get worked into a frenzy by the media over there theory of were all gonna die, because if the ecosystem collapses, it wont be in our life time.

Helen asks…

What is more eco-friendly out of a concrete bridge and a wooden bridge?

I was wondering which one is more ecofriendly and I need a brief description of why one and not the other.

Thank You.
Thanks for the answers so far guys, but what I want to initially know is on the whole, which one do you think is the more ecofriendly and why.

The Expert answers:

You would have to count the total energy cost over the life of the bridge. As well as the safety issues.

As well as the effect on the local environment.

Difficult call. On balance, the concrete bridge would win because of its longevity. Unless you think that dead humans and decaying wood are good for the environment.

What are some eco-friendly products that you can find at your local grocery store in Australia?

I want to buy more ecofriendly products, can anyone give me some brand names to start with?? I am having trouble sourcing any information online. Thank you.

The Expert answers:

Try out Nature’s Organics http://www.naturesorganics.com.au/ they have some personal care and home cleaning products. Check a smaller health food store or environmental shop and the health food/speciality aisle of your supermarket if there is one. Look for things that say “biodegradable, non-toxic, environmentally safe”. Hope that helps some.

Susan asks…

Is there an eco-friendly sealer for my granite countertops?

It’s time to seal the granite countertops in my kitchen. I am looking for a sealer that is ecofriendly, nontoxic, and effective. Any suggestions?

The Expert answers:

Yes, but it does not work well in my opinion.
You need a penatrating sealer to keep stains out of the stone and on the surface.
I use Miracle Sealants for polished granite.
To see if you need to seal, throw water across the tops, if it beads up it is ok, if it absorbs into the stone and get dark, sealit again .

I bought my clothes from them.

Inexpensive, stylish and of good quality

Free shipping. Very cute!! You should try.

Lizzie asks…

How eco-friendly is when a company sell products online?

How ecofriendly is when a company sell products online? Like how can a company help the world by selling online instead of selling in stores.

The Expert answers:

All companies are Pseudo Eco Friendly
They become Eco Friendly just to cut cost or to show that they are eco friendly
Had they been real ECO friendly they would have given incentive to customer when they go for Eco friendly things.
For example Dell stopped Shipping User Manual in Paper form in 2005 to save money but did not share the benefit of reducing the cost with the customer.

These guys just do it to save money. Eco friendly is to fool common man to make them feel that if they don’t get a printed manual its ok coz its saving the environmentt.

This is precisely what Lindsey Graham is talking about when he says we need to put a price on carbon.

“To jump-start nuclear power, wind and solar and the green economy, you’ve got to price carbon…How you do it is subject to discussion and open debate. But the idea of not pricing carbon, in my view, means you’re not serious about energy independence. The odd thing is you’ll never have energy independence until you clean up the air, and you’ll never clean up the air until you price carbon.”

“Every day we wait in this nation China is going to eat our lunch.”

“my concern is that every day that we delay trying to find a price for carbon is a day that China uses to dominate the green economy….China has made a long-term strategic decision and they are going gang-busters.”

The next technology boom is in green energy. The Chinese know it, most Europeans know it, and some Americans know it, but many don’t. If we don’t invest in the technology on par with China, as Graham says, they’re going to eat our lunch and dominate the green economy.

The west can still catch up, but only if we ramp up our investments in green tech.

Paul asks…

how would the world be different if we use more renewable energy?

im doing a persusaive essay on this

The Expert answers:

The air would be cleaner, the mountains in the Appalachians would not be blasted and shoved into the streams and valleys, and we wouldn’t need to fight wars in the middle east.

Jenny asks…

Can you make money by buying stocks of renewable energy companies?

since global warming and the need for more greener energy like wind power increases, is it really possible you can make lots of money by buying these companies now that are worth virtually nothing, and wait until the world gets the need of renewable energy? (buying shares of stocks). Thanks

The Expert answers:

Nobody can predict the movement of any stocks whether going up or coming down. Many of the market professionals use fundamental analysis of companies along with technical analysis like chartology, option movements and relative price strength of stocks.

There might be many people who think the same logic as yours and made investment in renewable energy companies. Consequently, some of these companies’ shares have gone up significantly where you might have to find a good spot to buy at certain time.

What you need to do is to study the company’s performance (revenues and earnings and their growth) in relation to the stock price. Also, look into the company’s financial condition (does it have a lot of debts?), market share of its products, product leadership, and earnings browth rates vs. Its competitors.

Since you will be investing your hard earned income, be very careful in doing the preliminary studies before investing. I recommend you also read a couple of books on investment.

Mark asks…

Why doesn’t the world just use Green power and Renewable Energy instead of Oil?

The Expert answers:

Money.

Lots of things are set up to use oil based products (cars, airplanes, etc), so it would cost a small fortune to switch it over. Third world countries have very little money. Countries that have more money don’t have enough money to do that.

Oil producing countries are very, very rich. They like their money.

Going green is sort of a progressive thing. It’s not something we can such “switch over to.” It will take some time.

Sandra asks…

Help on creating renewable energy devices?

I need major help on my 8th grade science project. I want to get a head start on it without screwing up. The independent variables I will be testing are the world‘s most efficient renewable energy machines. will be testing wind powered generators, geothermal generators, and hydroelectric generators. I need help on creating cheap, functioning replicas of these. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Some of those are going to be beyond your capabilities (geothermal generators)

What you need to understand is your systems share some basic components- the power generation portion- you can use a permanent magnet motor for this part. It works but is inefficient, but will work for your wind and hydro portion.

What is different is the driving mechanism- how are you harnessing the energy of your material source- air, water and making the mechanical connection to your common generator. If you have an RC aircraft propeller, there you ahve the means for harnessing wind- now how are you going to use something similar to harness the water energy? You might have to carve somethig from a block of wood. Your geothermal system will be similar, but you are not likely to be allowed to use live steam to drive a turbine blade in your classroom.

There is the geenral outline you sought. Now you have to apply the process of assembly and understanding your assembly.

To understand how a motor works and conversely your generator- you need to understand magnetism and how that makes the each work.

James asks…

BCON-a green alternative energy stock..is this worth the look?

Home

The Expert answers:

I’m a big risk taker with several renewable energy penny stocks but I don’t like BCON. They haven’t filed any NASDAQ paperwork since 2008. In fact, they’re in danger of being de-listed.
And they’re not anywhere close to being profitable.

On the other hand, they’ve recently received over $40 million in funds from the DOE and equity issuance. They’re actually building a power plant in NY with this new technology. Both positive signs.

If you don’t mind the risk and understand you could lose your entire investment, BCON could be a good investment. But the odds are against it.
