Your Questions About Green Living

Nancy asks…

What do you believe are the top 10 environmental issues in the world today?

Pretty straight forward.
They don’t have to be in any particular order.
I already have quite a few jotted down but I’m looking for more options:
-Global Warming
-Overpopulation
-Deforestation/destruction of ecosystems
-Animal Extinction/Endangerment
-Waste/Pollution
-Extensive use of non renewable resources
But that’s all I really have.

The Expert answers:

Pollution
the cutt down of trees
the use of nonrenewable resources
the usege of animal habitats
THATS ALL I CAN THINK OF

Donna asks…

what do you think are the basic environmental issues today?? how can we solve them?

The Expert answers:

In the USA, the newest issue to raise its head will be “mom and pop” biodiesel manufacturers improperly disposing of their waste materials.

Joseph asks…

What are the main environmental issues in current events today?

The Expert answers:

There are lots of environmental issues in the headlines, including:
The British Petroleum (BP) oil spill and aftermath
The debate over global warming
Limits on greenhouse gas emissions
Efforts to switch over to cleaner forms of energy instead of gas and coal (e.g. Solar, wind, etc.)

Hope this helps!

Betty asks…

What are some specific and arguable environmental issues existing in the world today?

The Expert answers:

– Global warming
– Pollution
– Invasion of foreign species into a habitat, crowding out native species.
– Many species going extinct

In fact all these issues can be summarized by: human overpopulation.

Daniel asks…

What are some environmental issues we are facing today?

and what can we do to help

The Expert answers:

Global warming
air pollution
water pollution
ozone layer depletion
not to mention manmade dissaters..

Thomas asks…

Which economic analysis of the proposed carbon cap and trade bills do you find most plausible?

Climate and energy bills involving carbon cap and trade systems have been proposed by the US House (Waxman-Markey [WM]) and Senate (Kerry-Lieberman [KM]). Numerous economic analyses of these bills have been performed, as summarized below.

Congressional Budget Office (CBO): WM will cost about $175 per household in 2020, and those “in the lowest income quintile would see an average net benefit of about $40 in 2020. The estimate “does not include the economic benefits and other benefits of the reduction in GHG emissions and the associated slowing of climate change.” CBO’s estimate also does not include the economic benefits of other provisions in WM.
http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/103xx/doc10327/06-19-CapAndTradeCosts.pdf

American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE): estimates that the WM efficiency provisions alone could save businesses and consumers $22 billion ($170 per household) annually by 2020, and that the net savings of the bill’s provisions not included in the CBO estimate would more than make up for the estimated cost.
http://www.aceee.org/energy/national/National_Summary_ACES.pdf

Energy Information Administration (EIA) on WM: the average cost to households from 2012 to 2030 (discounted) is $83.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/servicerpt/hr2454/pdf/sroiaf%282009%2905.pdf

EPA on WM: $80-111 per year per average family.
http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/economics/pdfs/HR2454_Analysis.pdf

EPA on KL: $79-146 per year per average family.
http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/economics/pdfs/EPA_APA_Analysis_6-14-10.pdf

Peterson Institute on KL: “In our analysis, households see somewhere between a $136 increase and a $35 dollar decrease in annual energy expenditures, depending on future improvements in vehicle efficiency”
http://www.piie.com/publications/pb/pb10-12.pdf

Heritage Foundation: WM “Will Cost American Families Over $3,000 a Year” (per family of 4)
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Factsheets/Waxman-Markey-Global-Warming-Tax-Kills-More-Jobs-and-Kills-the-Economy

Institute for Energy Research on KL: “Households would face a gross annual burden of $125.9 billion per year or $1,042 per household,”

New Study: Kerry-Lieberman to Destroy Up to 5.1 Million Jobs, Cost Families $1,042 per Year, Wealthiest Americans to Benefit

So basically 3 government analyses put the cost at somewhere between a modest net gain for consumers, and a $175 per family (about $60 per person) per year net cost. You also have 2 oil-industry-funded organizations (Heritage Foundation has received over $630,000 and Institute for Energy Research has received $307,000 from ExxonMobil since 1998), which put the net cost at $1000-3000 per family.

If you don’t trust government or oil-funded analyses, the only alternative I found was the Peterson Institute for International Economics which “is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research institution devoted to the study of international economic policy.” If you look at their climate change page, they don’t seem to have any particular dog in this race.
http://www.iie.com/research/topics/hottopic.cfm?HotTopicID=16

Their analysis is consistent with the CBO, EIA, and EPA at between a modest net gain for households ($35 per year) and a net cost of $136 per year. Which economic analysis of the proposed carbon cap and trade bills do you find most plausible?
Deniers, I ask that you either answer the question or don’t bother ‘answering’ at all. The question is about the cost of the proposed legislation in the USA.

The Expert answers:

Thanks Dana, for the summary. Generally I like to take the middle course when experts disagree, and discount the opinions of industry “experts” with an economic interest. If I read correctly, that puts me in the modest cost per family camp.

Daniel asks…

‘Carter was a fool’ say the majority of a nation who elected Bush TWICE? BUT: Was Jimmy Carter right?

http://www.energybulletin.net/node/9657
From the article:

Carter faced a crisis from a combination of economic problems, failed policies of his predecessors and, finally, an Iranian revolution that cut access to some Middle Eastern oil.

Carter met the problems by starting sweeping oil-reduction reforms, including creation of the Cabinet-level Department of Energy.

He began spending millions of dollars researching alternative sources for electrical power, including solar power. He got utilities to cut their use of oil for electricity and ramp up their use of natural gas or coal.

“Up until Carter, we were getting about 20 percent of our electricity from oil generation,” said Jay Hakes, director of the Energy Information Administration under Carter and an authority on modern presidents and oil. “And post-Carter, it went down to about 3 percent.”

Carter insisted that U.S. automakers build more fuel-efficient cars, with a goal of 27.5 miles per gallon over the following decade – a requirement passed under Gerald Ford but put into force by Carter.

He offered incentives for getting oil from shale, creating a boom initially in the Rockies – and a bust when it failed to be cost-effective. He offered deductions for using solar water heaters in homes and commercial buildings.

“People in the upper-income bracket were always looking for tax cuts. They were going to build a house anyhow, so they were saying, ‘Well let’s look at this solar stuff and see what we can do,’ ” said Marc Giaccardo, a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio who at the time was an Albuquerque architect.

Carter even had solar collectors installed on the White House grounds to heat the executive residence’s water.

Then Carter lost re-election to Ronald Reagan in 1980. The so lar panels at the White House eventually came down – and Reagan and his aides gutted the solar research program.

“In June or July of 1981, on the bleakest day of my professional life, they descended on the Solar Energy Research Institute, fired about half of our staff and all of our contractors, including two people who went on to win Nobel prizes in other fields, and reduced our $130 million budget by $100 million,” recalls Denis Hayes, the founder of Earth Day, who had been hired by Carter to spearhead the solar initiative.

Reagan and Congress stopped aggressively pushing new auto efficiency standards, acceding to Detroit’s desire to leave them at Carter-era levels. They let the solar tax benefit expire, and the nascent solar industry went belly- up.

It was time to let the markets work their magic and stop all this government tinkering, Reagan and conservatives said.

AND LOOK WHERE WE ARE NOW WITH ALL THIS ‘WORKING IT’S MAGIC’ BS?’

Following His Word:
I just fell over myself trying to block you.
Your logic sucks.

The Expert answers:

Only people who did not understand the magnitude of his presidency, can say he was a fool. Carter was the most honest President US ever had and yet he was able to accomplish progress for the country. He was the only US president who made major strides in Palestinian-Israeli relationship, Camp David agreement. It was immediately destroyed by Reagan. Carter was working towards piece and prosperity for all, while facing incredible domestic opposition and screwed up economy.

Your Questions About Green Living

Maria asks…

Where are the jobs for renewable energy ?

Hello Mr. President Obama.
I have been a student in Zero Energy Technologies at Shoreline C.C. in Seattle WA. for over two now and I’m about to graduate with my degree in renewable energy. I have also been unemployed the whole time.
The out look for jobs in this industry does not look good at the present time and for that matter all jobs.
I am a firm believer in the course you have chosen for are future energy policies. And there many students waiting for a opportunity in this field of work. We are knocking at the door but nothing seems to opening up for us.
How can we stand back and let other countries around the world take the lead on renewable energy?

The Expert answers:

A degree in renewable energy? Is that electronics, wiring, design, construction, fabrication, transport…? If you’re looking at solar or geothermal, go to CA or NJ or most any southern state. If wind, what about the Columbia Gorge area or Indiana or NY? No one is going to seek you out to give you a job.

Helen asks…

Why has renewable energy topics been shelved when they represent hundreds of thousands of jobs?

The failure of Solyndra is as we all know that we backed a manufacturer of modules without a program to stimulate projects for the modules to be installed

We need a national renewables standard

The Expert answers:

Oil companies don’t want it and they have a lot of influence with law makers. They spend billions to convince the public that renewables have no place in our economy.

Jenny asks…

Best Military job to get into Renewable Energy and/or Investing Careers?

Interested to hear from current business people on what they did in the military and if it led to their position now. Further, what would you recommend as a job in the military to help to enter into the renewable energy development and/or investments.

thank you

The Expert answers:

There are few military specialties that translate very well into “investments.”
For renewable energy, look for something in the electrical power or mechanical fields.

James asks…

What degree should i do for a career in Renewable Energy?

I have a passion for renewable energy and would like a career in the field in the future, but what degree should i do to get a job in the industry?

The Expert answers:

I would not get hung up on the renewable energy piece in terms of a degree. It’s not an industry in itself, but a competing service against coal, oil, water and nuclear. Figure out the energy part before focusing on the renewable.

You should look to figuring out what aspect of renewable energy you like then go with that. While you are studying, you can then seek faculty guidance and concentrate on renewable energy there.

Example – Become a civil engineer to build buildings and structures. Then focus on what you learned to do a senior project about hydroelectric dams.

Example – Study organic chemistry and develop an organic compound that can compete against silicon for solar generation. You don’t need to know about renewable energy to do organic chemistry, but you need organic chemistry to make the technology work.

Learn the basics, then make it better.

Good luck!

Daniel asks…

what do you consider most interesting and challenging aspects of renewable energy and energy conservation job?

The Expert answers:

I have never actually thought about renewable energy in terms of “challenging” but what I do find very interesting is those plans for the sort towers in the Sahara. They’re very high, have a fan at the top, the air warms (because of the sun) and goes up and makes the fan spin thus generating energy via a eh… Well, a dynamo of some sort, I guess. They would look cool AND provide massive amounts of energy.

Sharon asks…

What would environmentally sustainable transportation look like?

What would environmentally sustainable transportation look like?
Seems like Global Warming might be real. Cars and Planes are two sources of Carbon Emissions that might have a technological solution.
What would an Ecologically Appropriate Transportation System look like?

If, after the Moon Landing in 1969, NASA (or similar gov agency), had spent an equal amount of time, money, and passion to build a clean air transit system; what would it look like?

The Expert answers:

There’s a lot of ways to have environmentally sustainable transportation. Given our current installed base of gasoline and diesel vehicles, the logical solution would be to synthesize gasoline and diesel from bio-mass waste and utilize the existing distribution networks and existing vehicles. The DoD does this with the Diversified Energy Hydromax gasifier and the Velocys Micro Channel Fischer Tropsche reactor to produce diesel and jet fuel from the waste generated at military installations. This is technology dating back to the 19th century so it doesn’t take a NASA Apollo effort to achieve environmental sustainability (Don’t get me started on the Apollo killing off 1950’s era Project Orion issue). However this does not sell more cars.

Just as with tail fins and the concept of model years, the introduction of new vehicle categories such as the Hybrid, Fuel Cell and before that the SUV, Mini-van, and station wagon lineages prompts the public to replace their vehicles earlier than would be justified on purely utilitarian and environmental considerations. This has driven the economic growth, generous employment and population redistribution that we have seen in the last century and arguably isn’t sustainable.

The question should be is economic sustainability even possible given our current expectations of continued economic growth? Can our expectations be changed? Unfortunately, the free market suffers from the parable of the commons and periodic economic collapse is inevitable in such a system.

Jenny asks…

How do we ethically reduce the population to a sustainable level?

The world presently has 6.5 billion inhabitants, a number that far outstretches the capability of this planet to provide resources for so many people. We are headed for a malthusian catastrophe which will lead to great suffering in many regions of the world. How do you think we can ethically reduce the population to a sustainable level?

The Expert answers:

People take personal responsibility for their sexual behaviour and limit the number of children they have. Contraception should be free to all in every country. Sex Education is key, but so is normal education and training for work throughout the world. The better life chances a woman has, the better life chances and lower unwanted pregnancy rate her children have.

Similarly, there are a lot of people, elderly, frail, disabled or terminally ill people, who would chose to shorten their life if it was legally possible to do so in their country. Changes in legislation could prevent a lot of unnecessary and UNWANTED suffering by artificially extending life through medical intervention. In my opinion,. Assisted suicide should be legal (with strict supervision and legal safeguards) for those with life limiting illnesses and those terminally ill etc. IF that is THEIR choice.

David asks…

How to approach the school district to change to sustainable bio diesel?

I watch a really good documentary and want the best for my children. The film is called Fuel. I recommend it. It has a lot of good info in it. I would like to know how would I go about going to the school district and ask them if they could change to sustainable bio diesel in the school buses?

The Expert answers:

Be consquent.

Mary asks…

What are some ways to make a community environmentally sustainable?

i have a geography assignment of which i have to write all the possible ways i can make a community environmentally sustainable and all this crap.
Something like solar energy and stuff, anyone know stuff like that?

The Expert answers:

To make a community more environmentally sustainable you can get a Greenhouse kit http://www.organicmechanic.com/product/greenhouse-kit so that you can produce your own vegetables. Producing your own vegetables is far better environmentally than buying them. The vegetables are shipped to the store which uses fuel as well as plastic, because the vegetables were likely packaged when they were shipped to the store.

Wind turbines are a effective natural source of energy. Such as the Micro Wind Turbine. Http://www.organicmechanic.com/product/micro-wind-turbine

There’s also a way to filter water and vegetable oil into fuel using a Oil Filtration Centrifuge. Http://www.organicmechanic.com/product/oil-centrifuge

Carol asks…

Do you have any good ideas for a basic sustainable home?

By that I mean a basic setup idea for a eco-friendly home. I plan on remodeling my house and I want some good ideas to create a sustainable home.

The Expert answers:

You didn’t mention how old the house is, but here’s a good perspective on going green in an older home. You do have to balance cost and the goal of being green, but oftentimes you can do a lot by just reusing materials and being careful about where new materials come from (how far they are moved to get to your site or if they are made from recycled materials)

Donald asks…

is there such thing as eco friendly nails or screws?

I build furniture and i was just wondering about eco friendly or recycled nails and screws?

The Expert answers:

Are you for real?

“We use green nails?”

Actually it’s impossible. Our use of metal (mining, milling, melting) is one of the most energy intensive things human beings do. If you really want to be green, use wooden pegs.

Carol asks…

Is there an eco-friendly alternative to foam when upholstering furniture?

I just can’t stand that our furniture, clothing and homes are filled with toxic substances and chemicals. I’ve heard that many manufactured products that you can find in our homes emit a toxic gas. Is there an alternative to foam that I can use for support when I re-upholster furniture? Something that will biodegrade? I know hay and horse hair were used back in the day, but that isn’t very cheap right now. Any other suggestions?

Any answers are greatly appreciated! Also, if you have a good “search phrase” I can google, that will be appreciated also! Thank you!

The Expert answers:

There is coarse cotton batting used for furniture. Call a local upholstery place and ask if they have any or can get some for you. It comes in huge bales so you probably don’t want a whole one.

Michael asks…

Help with eco friendly characteristics of a house???

So for a project at school we have to come up with ideas to make a house eco friendly(not appliances or furniture). Things special windows or materials to help insulate vs. using more heat. Does anyone have ideas? Please, please, please help!!! Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Better insulation in the attic and weatherstripping on the bottom of door are great ways to save energy.

Solving Conflicts Abroad
I feel that it is not up to America to solve everyone’s problems. We America are looked at as the “superhero” of the globe. Thought we are a great nation, we have problems of our own. But as we go to Africa to feed the hungry, but we have people going hungry here. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t help other people but I am saying that we do have to worry about our problems, not just other peoples. As for the War in The Middle East it is in fact both nations fault. We went to their land looking to take their oil and to help the Samaritans, but truthfully they don’t want us there and I can’t say I blame them. Let’s say that Canada comes to Texas and try’s to force their ways on us. We would not take it sitting down. America is a great nation one of the best in the world but that’s just it…we are only one nation. Just one average normal nation who got lucky when Christopher Columbus found the new world. And when Spain took control of it all the way to the American revolution. Though we may stick our noses where they don’t belong we have saved a great deal of life’s by acing in other’s affairs . Such as the World Wars though many life’s were lost, lots were saved. We stopped a bad war from like a virus spreading a killing millions more than it already had. I see other’s viewpoints on how if we didn’t act there would be many conflicts but I still stick with my statement earlier on how we have our own problems too. Instead of taking others oil we should spend more time researching renewable resource energy sources. We have solved many problems but as the saying goes “Curiosity Killed the Cat”. In addition to all that I have said I feel America though a great nation is not due to the duty of solving conflicts abroad.

Solving Conflicts Abroad

I feel that it is not up to America to solve everyone’s problems. We in America are looked at as the “superhero” of the globe. Though we are a great nation, we have problems of our own.

We go to Africa to feed the hungry, but we have people going hungry here. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t help other people, but I am saying that we do have to worry about our problems, not just those of other people.

As for the outcome of the war in Iraq, it is in fact the fault of both nations. We went to their land looking to take their oil and to be “Good Samaritans”, but truthfully they don’t want us there, and I can’t say I blame them. If Canada went to Texas and tried to force their ways on us, we would not take it sitting down. America is a great nation, one of the best in the world, but that’s just it…we are only one nation. In addition to all of the above, I feel America, though a great nation, does not have the duty of solving every conflict abroad.

Senators plan to revive immigration bill
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070615/ap_on_go_co/immigration

Left for dead a week ago, legislation to strengthen border security while bestowing legal status on millions of illegal immigrants is showing signs of life.

Senate leaders announced plans Thursday night to revive the White House-backed measure as early as next week, although neither Majority Leader Harry Reid nor his GOP counterpart, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, issued any predictions the bill ultimately would pass.

Instead, they issued a statement that said in its entirety: “We met this evening with several of the senators involved in the immigration bill negotiations. Based on that discussion, the immigration bill will return to the Senate floor after completion” of sweeping energy legislation that has occupied the Senate this week.

There was no immediate reaction from the bill’s numerous Senate critics, who have consistently attacked the legislation as conferring amnesty on the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the country.

Officials said the Bush-backed plan for accelerated funding would be among the changes to be voted on. So, too, a proposal by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, to toughen a requirement for illegal immigrants to return to their home country before gaining legal status.

Also to be protected from immediate change is a provision giving law enforcement agencies access to personal information that immigrants provide on their applications for legal status.

But the provisions relating to the legal fate of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants has drawn the most controversy.

The bill allows illegal immigrants who were in the country as of Jan. 1, 2007, to come forward, pay fees and fines, pass a background check and receive an indefinitely renewable four-year Z visa to live and work legally in the U.S.

Ultimately, holders of Z visas could qualify for citizenship if they learn English and hold down jobs. Heads of households would have to return to their home countries, whether or not they sought a green card bestowing permanent legal resident status.

The bill also creates a new employment-based point system for new immigrants to qualify for green cards based on their education and skill level, and eliminates or limits visa preferences for family members of U.S. citizens and permanent legal residents.

The text of the bill, S. 1348, may be found at http://thomas.loc.go

The Expert answers:

Overall, I think most people recognize the logistics and associated problems of attempting to remove 12 million + people from the country.

The American public does not want to see money thrown at the border control problem in empty promises that are rarely if ever truly followed up on.

If the government would fulfill it’s obligation to control the border, granted, a huge undertaking in and of itself, and they established this control first, and then moved toward a naturalization and legalization program for people here, many people would likely calm down and accept the necessity for some type of implied amnesty.

It’s a case of fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. They promised to control the borders in 1986 and failed to do so then and have continued that failure and now they want us to believe that because they pass a bill in the senate, that they are somehow solving the problem.

As things stand, the likely scenario in many people’s minds is that these 12 million plus will be legalized and forgiven and the flood of illegals will continue to cross the borders unchecked. We have no reason to trust that the border issue will be resolved with the promise of a few billion being thrown at it. People I know want to see real results on controlling the border and then address the issues of those already here.

As populations in North America grow, so does the need for wood to build houses, stores, and other buildings. Select the statement that best describes the long–term global effects of this behavior.

People will need to plant more trees and in a few months the entire problem will be taken care of.

If we control the amount of forests cut, the people will go somewhere else to find wood. This is not a concern as long as they are not cutting down the forests in North America.

Populations are falling in the rest of the world so the extra wood can come from other countries that have a surplus.

In order to meet the demand, forests have been cut down at an alarming rate. If we do not find another source of building materials, our forests, an important natural resource, will all disappear.

How sustainble is genetic engineering as a form of food production?

how sustainable is GM food? I need to know cos I got a project. If possible, state the source and if you are really too free, give me some pros and cons of GM food. Thank you.

The Expert answers:

I’m a small farmer on a permaculture farm (for over 20 years). So your “source” is me….your getting your information strait from the farmers mouth.

GM food pros: It lines the pockets of huge agribusiness companies like Monsanto, Dow, ect. They make titanic profits, in their quest to control the worlds food supply.

GM food cons: It lines the pockets of hugs agribusiness companies like Monsanto, Dow, ConAgra, ect. They make titanic profits, in their quest to control the worlds food supply.

Not a SINGLE GM food is tested before being released to be put in the human food supply. No kidding, not a single one. They are released by the FDA. The general human public of the world are the lab rats of these companies.

So if you are allergic to something, like say fish, you have zero idea if they have snuck fish genes into your tomatoes, or strawberries.

Perhaps you have religious (or moral) reasons why you cannot eat rodents (specifically mice). Do you know which vegtable crops you will find mice genes in? (I do)

These mega agribusiness companies have turned farmers into serfs on their own land, in the quest to do things ever cheaper.

These GM crops are helping to create supper weeds, and supper bugs.
The only thing that kills the weeds is to hack them out by hand, or to have goats graze on them several years in a row.

The only thing that kills the supper bugs (insects) are chickens and ducks if they are the ground dwelling kind of bugs. If they are the flying type farmers are just S.O.L.

GM foods are NOT sustainable. Not at all. They are going to fail, and fail spectacuarly!

The European union has very wisely decided not to allow GM foods. The countries that are setting themselves up for famine where people are actually starving to death in the streets are:

The U.S.A.
Canada
South America
Australia
Africa

Think about what will happen if the corn, wheat, or soy bean crops fail in those five countries all at the same time. Think it cannot happen all at once? Your kidding yourself. Disease in crops can travel the globe as fast as the flu does.

GM crops will NOT deliver the better nutrition, yeild, vitamins, ect that the mega agribusiness companies state they will. They will ONLY provide a way to further enslave (through debt) farmers. They will ONLY produce crops which are quick to line their pockets….not actually be good for the world at large.

24 hr road trip with toddler, what to pack for food?

We’re going to be traveling a little over 24hrs with our son who turns 2 next month. We would like to keep fast-food to a minimum to eliminate costs and keep things relatively healthy. (We’re not sticklers but donuts are not very sustainable food!) Right now on the list, beef jerky to cover some protein, grapes, and we can’t think of some decent sandwiches to go along with it. Any other ideas would be great as well!
Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Peanut Butter crackers, or sandwich, peanut butter and banana sandwich, protein and fruit there, no sticky jelly to deal with, or use preserves such as strawberry and peanut butter but bring along the wet wipes or hand sanitizer which you should anyway. Rice cakes come in many flavors and beat chips, small bite size ones are great for toddlers,You can usually find a variety of fruit already cut and ready to eat, like cantaloupe, grapes, watermelon, strawberries, etc. Or make your own w/ several fruits mixed together. We took the little cans of food that come in a microwaveable container (along with disposable dinnerware) that can be eaten right from the can or stop and most places will let you use their microwave for your child. There are many varieties like Chef Boy R Dee spaghetti, chicken and dumplings, beef stew, etc. Read the label for fat content etc… Some are better than others.Milk of course and fruit juices, those w/ the straws are great. Take a container of water to rinse the milk cup out, a roll of paper towels and hand sanitizer for sticky fingers. You know what your child likes and what can easily be put in a small cooler. Good luck!

Your Questions About Green Living

Donna asks…

Should poor countries sacrifice their economies to stop global warming and environmental issues?

This question comes after reading an article where China says that poor countries should not sacrifice their growth to the general concern about global warming and other environment issues. They have a point by adding that most of the green house emissions comes from the richest countries and that the effect of slowing their economy is far worst than the global warming effect. I belief that if we are able to travel to the moon and orbit the earth, we can find a better way to produce our goods and energy needs in a more efficient and cleaner way than today. Because of the fundings needed for research and development it needs to be done by the governments of the wealthiest nations. We as individual also need to play a part to be more efficient in the use of energy, water and goods. And this is not only is good for the environment but also for your own family budget.

The Expert answers:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a total advocate for being environmentally conscious. In fact, I ride my bicycle to work to cut down on carbon emissions, dependency of foreign oil and the need for war to defend that type of energy – but I don’t think that any country should sacrifice their economy for ecology and I agree whole-heartedly with your explanation.

First of all, it’s not an either or issue. You do not either have an environmentally friendly country or a successful economy. You can have both. Holland has used wind energy for a long time. Recently Germany became the solar capital of the world (yes Germany, the place without a bunch of sun). I recently needed new light bulbs for my bedroom, and opted for the eco-florescent ones, because it doesn’t cost a lot more, and they make a lot of sense. Walmart enclosed their refrigerators and used skylights better to reduce their energy usage by 20% or more. Shanghai is even building “green” complexes with commercial and residential together so residents use less fuel to get to the store and back.

When I look at the problem, it’s not an issue of killing an economy, it’s an issue of adopting best practices. Best practices include designing better buildings that are multifuncional and more energy efficient. Best practices includes placing retail and commercial space near residents who will shop and work there. Best practices include producing wind, solar, wave, and geothermal energy close to where it will be used. Best practices include not eating a 3000 mile salad.

Being environmentally concious is not something that you do by going about big projects. It’s about living life a little bit smarter than we used to.

On a side note, I think that there are better ways to invest the world’s money than to combat global warming. Check out this link for a nice 19 minute discussion of the topic. Very intelligent.

Environmental Issues:-

Humans are responsible for many of the Earth’s environmental issues.Toxic chemicals are released daily into the land, air and water creating hazardous health conditions for people and destroying animal habitats and ecosystems at an ever-increasing rate. Pollution occurs when a contaminant is introduced into the environment, according to Green Student University. Human beings are responsible for the environmental issues caused by industrial and commercial waste and modes of transportation.

1.Air Pollution
Factories and power plants introduce toxic chemicals into the air.Vehicle emissions pollute the air in towns and cities across the globe, and smoke released from factories and power plants contains harmful chemicals and contributes to air pollution. The thick layer of smog that hangs over major cities like Los Angeles, New York, Moscow, Shanghai and Beijing causes major health concerns for residents. The hole in the ozone layer is in part a result of air pollutants.

2.Water Pollution
Spills from large oil tankers pollute oceans and seas.Humans also are polluting the world’s water sources. Factories and plants create chemical contaminant runoff into waterways. Energy companies are responsible for oil spills that harm marine life and damage ecosystems. Toxic waste is dumped into lakes, rivers and streams, killing fish and other forms of wildlife. The quality of drinking water is also reduced as a result of pollution.

3.Land Pollution
Sewage can contaminate land and seep into water sources.Chemical and nuclear plants, construction debris, oil refineries and human waste are among the many human factors that contribute to land pollution. Commercial and industrial waste contribute to ever-expanding landfills. Green Student University claims that each year a typical American produces more than 3,000 pounds of hazardous waste.

4.Deforestation
Deforestation can damage the quality of the land and water.Deforestation, the massive removal and clearing of the forests, occurs to fulfill human desires for an increase in agriculture and for construction. Rain forests are shrinking at a rapid rate, resulting in the loss of habitat for hundreds of thousands of animal and insect species. Deforestation greatly increases the number of animals either threatened or endangered. The extensive removal of trees, which when alive absorb the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, contributes to climate change. The water cycle is also affected by deforestation because trees return water vapor into the atmosphere

Sandra asks…

Where can I find a list of goverment grants provided to an alternative energy company?

I’m currently in the process of starting up a business that manufactures energy efficent homes, and I’d like to find out what types of government funding would be available.

I’ve already checked the Dept. of Energy website and couldn’t find what I was looking for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two FREE sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.

There is a grant called 81.036 Inventions and Innovations http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.SEARCH_PGM_TXT_DYN.SHOW?p_arg_names=prog_nbr_in&p_arg_values=81.036&p_arg_names=keyword_in&p_arg_values=energy&p_arg_names=_title&p_arg_values=

OBJECTIVES:
To encourage the development and commercialization of energy-saving inventions by providing financial and technical assistance to projects that have a potential for significant energy savings and future commercialization markets through a competitive solicitation process.

Applicant Eligibility:
Individuals that are U.S. Citizens, either native-born or naturalized, small businesses that are U.S. Owned as defined in 10 CFR 600.501.

You may want to check this out.

If you need to apply, go to Grants.gov and download the application form for this grant by giving its CFDA number 81.036

Or go to CFDA to see what other energy related grants are available

Ruth asks…

Im considering starting an alternative energy company in the Las Vegas area?

The company would use grass clippings, compost, and other non-edible plant parts and produce cellulosic ethanol. We would also sell units that run on this fuel. The company would collect the glass clippings, etc sort of like a garbage pick up. Where should I start? Money is not an obstacle.

The Expert answers:

How about learning HOW ethanol is produced? When you say money is not an obstacle, I doubt that. You’ll need millions.

William asks…

Where can I get grants/low interest loans to start a biotech/alternative energy company?

I am a recent college graduate.

The Expert answers:

Go to http://www.grants.gov for a list of government grants and how you can apply for them. However, there are no grants for a for profit business unless you are opening a daycare and then it is a minimal amount. If you need money, you will need to apply for a loan. No lender will talk to you unless you provide them with a valid business plan. Go to http://www.sba.gov , http://www.score.org or http://www.bplan.com for sample business plans and instructions on how to write a business plan.

Then, go to http://www.score.org/ and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor to review your business plan and discuss various loan options available to you.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.

Michael asks…

What companies trading on nyse are developing alternative energy sources?

I’m interested for our IRA contribution for 2007.

The Expert answers:

TSL, STP both solar power. For wind power you will have to go pink sheet–VWSYF. Alcohol–on the nasd–PEIX, on the nyse–ADM (I would stay away from those though. A political gimic more than anything else).
