Donald asks…

What can be done to increase Chikan here in the US?

Countries like Japan are years ahead of the United States not only in terms of product innovation, and environmental issues, they are also well ahead of us in the area of Chikan. What steps should the government take to increase awareness and make Chikan more widespread here in America?

The Expert answers:

If you want each and every finger in both your hands broken, then you can practice Chikan all you want on me.

EDIT: Rainbow we can tag team him!!!!

Helen asks…

Is there any organization or company in alexandria that would support us in our environmental project?

Me and my friends in (Egypt-Alexandria) are part of the Global Environmental Youth Convention taking part in August 2008 in (China). And we were part of it last year in Dubai and took the 1st place prize in the Paper Waste project.
In part 3(starting now) of our course we have to do a project related to sustainable development and the environment.
We need an organization or company or hotel or supermarket or resort(any of the kind) that would be eager to support our project and idea “by carrying/trying them out”. We are going to be dealing with (Waste recycling/reducing) issue. e.g. reducing usage of paper and recycling. or reducing the usage of plastic.
I urgently need to find it.
Thanks in advance.

Good luck

Richard asks…

environmental issues/waste management in the workplace?

anyone know any useful ideas on how to mange the energy we use, and waste (mainly paper) we throw away in the office? Also- any important facts we should know about the environment- not like the obvious ones- but like some statistics etc that can give us a bit more drive to become more eco-friendly?

thanks a lot 🙂

The Expert answers:

Depending on the size of your business there are many paper shredding/recycling companies that can provide service. The document shredders/bins can accomodate paper clips, staples, and folder brackets and they pick up. This works for medium and larger offices, smaller offices may have to collect and drive to the recycler themselves.

Look into ways to reduce the paper. Use email, databases, websites, electronic billing and payment, computer filing. Encourage employees to not print drafts or emails. Accept digital signatures from PDF where you can so docs don’t have to be printed.

For energy: the obvious ones that you’d do in your home – control the thermostat, change lightbulbs, use power strips, turn off lights, computers, equipment. If employees listen to music encourage them to play it on the PC or phone system instead of a radio or CD player.

For statistics I’d suggest creating your own internal stats. Collect the waste paper for a week and weigh it, then calculate how many trees it took on an online calculator. That way it’s personal. Or have contests, for every $1 saved on the power bill the employees get to share $0.25 or pool it for a prize or party. The company still saves $0.75!

David asks…

environmental research?

I am an undergraduate student studying bioengineering and I hope to eventually make a career applying bioengineering techniques to helping the environment and working on environmental issues. I was actually inspired to do so when I spent some time with some members of the forest service in Tennessee and they told us about the issues with the eastern hemlock trees and the research and field work that is going on to save them….I really want to try to find a job/internship helping out on a similar project but I have no idea where to look or who to contact.

If anyone has any idea of companies or organizations that are doing environmental research preferably in the northern CA area, let me know because i would love to contact them for possible future internship opportunities!

The Expert answers:

I think you’ll find there aren’t many companies which do research on non-commercial plants. I would actually suggest picking up a job with the California state government or the national Forest Service in the area, as both are tasked to maintain the public forest resources. It won’t be called an internship – just a seasonal job, but the experience is the same.

Ken asks…

What are the general or main duties of a US coast guard marine safety officer?

USCG marine safety officers are in charge of what exactly? Do they deal with environmental issues? very curious, possible career path? What are some civilian careers that would follow serving?

The Expert answers:

“M” officers can do a bunch of different things.

Waterways Management: These folks take care of things like writing regulations that cover Limited Access areas and Safety or Security Zones around important sites (barges used to launch fireworks, major marine events like regattas, VIP visits and such). They also manage our Aids to Navigation missions. Aquatic Nuisance Species and Marine Mammal protection also fall to them – trying to stop the former and save the latter.

Marine Inspections and Investigations: Our commercial vessel structural inspectors are almost all officers. These folks will put on coveralls and climb through the bilges and inside double hulls of vessels to ensure that they are still safe to operate. Our Investigators are our detectives that investigate incidents after they’ve happened.

General Marine Safety Duty: These folks are involved in supervising our Pollution Investigators (enlisted folks), Facility Inspectors, Container Inspectors, and Port State Control boarding officers – and end up getting qualified to do these missions.

On top of all of this, they are saddled with the “crap” duties of every junior officer, standing duty as the Command Duty Officer, and various collateral duties like heading up the Morale Committee and stuff like that.

Civilian jobs can include CSI, police officer/state trooper, facility security officer (the overall manager of security, not a security guard!!), site supervisor for pollution clean-up companies, office manager, and a bunch of other stuff.

George asks…

WHICH alternative energy company did Warren Buffett invest $385M in?

Warren Buffett invested $385M in wind power and Bill Gates has placed millions in fuelcell, both of which are alternative energy sources. Does anyone know WHICH company, stock or shares that these guys have invested? Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Warren Buffett invested in Mid-American. They have some wind power in their portfolio. The company Bill Gates invested in, like everything else he touches these days, failed miserably…

Sandy asks…

Hillary Clinton says she will use excess oil company profits to invest in alternative energy?

The special section notes the Clinton proposal. Stock profits are from private corporations and investors. Would you allow a politician to use your profits for alternative energy development without your knowledge or approval? Could this be a political ploy?

The Expert answers:

Essentially, that makes those companies government companies. She just tryin to get elected by using the evil oil companies as the villain. Sure, they made lots of money this past year. But, what happens if you look at their balance sheet and compare it to other large companies. You can’t just look at the profits. There are expense and cost fluctuations. We already have a process for taking companies money. It’s called taxes. The government can’t just waltz in and say they want more. Smacks of socialism or communism. I’m not gonna start calling people comrade or stand in line for 3 hrs for toilet tissue like in past failed government systems. If she thinks the oil companies broke some laws then she can charge them and possible fine them. She can’t just decide who made to much and what they should do with it. My wife and I already pay a butt-load of taxes. Hilary would have us give all and become a welfare country.

The reason the U.S. Is greatest economic power ever is because of capitalism. You work hard, use your head and you can become very wealthy. You should not be punished for that.

Robert asks…

How many jobs could the U.S. create in 4 years by investing heavily in solar and wind energy alternatives?

The book “Project New America” puts great stock in alternative energy investments for lifting the country out of the recession. Here’s a link if you’d like to review it yourself: http://www.sitenet.com/books/NewAmerica/New%20America%207.pdf. How well do you believe this could work?

The Expert answers:

I would prefer they invest in Nuclear Power. It is more reliable, works in all climate areas, less environmental impact area, and cheaper power.

Nothing wrong with Solar and Wind, they are just not as cost effective and efficient.

Nancy asks…

Most promising rising alternative/renewable energy stock?

I am looking to invest in renewable energy. Solar/wind/tide etc… i was wondering what some of the best options are out there that are going to be rising in the near future. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

I know General Electric (GE) and Siemens (SI) are the biggest manufacturers of wind turbines in the United States.

Solar stocks didn’t perform well in 2008, but keep watching ASTI and TSL. Maybe you’ll be the first to buy them when they go up. TSL went up temporarily after inauguration day (1/30/2009).

Joseph asks…

What is a great carbon emission company to invest in?

I invest through Share Builder. I have Alternative energy stocks and some others. What would be a great small cap carbon emission stock?

The Expert answers:

Dont invest in Evergreen Energy who is in that business or trying to be just in case you run across that name. I am not sure when these companies will start to feel the impact of this.

Dont know any individual companies, sorry

dont use sharebuilder, switch to tradeking. I started with sharebuilder. Tradeking charges 50% less

Donald asks…

Are renewable energy sources better for the enviorment then nonrenewable?

I was just wondering if renewable energy sources are better to the enviorment then nonrnewable.
ok, thank you to everyone.
i just needed to know if burning stuff like biomass would cause more or less pollution to the word then say, gas.

The Expert answers:

Yes, like trees. We can always grow more, but oil? Nope, once it’s used it’s used.

Jenny asks…

How in demand will renewable energy jobs be in the near future?

I’m really worried about the economy and looking for a quick certification so I can have some sort of qualification in case it totally goes under. I found a 14 credit hour renewable energy certification at a community college. Do you think this will do any good for finding jobs?

The Expert answers:

In general, now is a great time to get into the field, as it is still relatively young and growing fast, so there’s an overall lack of truly experienced workers in the field. But whether or not you will easily find a job really depends on what you want to do in the sector and what your background is. For positions that don’t require any real technical knowledge about the field (i.e. Public affairs, legal, accounting, finance, construction), then jobs should be pretty easy to find, even with no formal training/certificate in renewable energy. There are some positions, such as engineers, scientists, environmentalists, or developers where you can probably find a position without any previous experience, but the certificate you mention would certainly help in getting yourself noticed as someone who is really motivated and desiring to be in the field. Then there are the most technical positions, such as plant operators or consultants where a formal degree would probably be most helpful in landing a position.

In short, the course you mention is a great idea to get started, but you should also do some research on the exact position you’re interested in to see how much background employers expect you to have in the field. For some positions, a short course may be sufficient, in others, it may not be. But if you are motivated and persistent, do all you can to learn about the field and talk to people in the field, and eventually, you should be able to land a position.

Nancy asks…

I am looking for renewable energy companies that trade on the stock market?

Does any one know any renewable Energy companies that trade on the stock market. I am having a hard time finding them.
Do you have any idea how I can find any more names?

The Expert answers:

Yahoo Finance or MSN Money are good and free tools you can use. Just search for ‘renewable energy’ or ‘green’ companies. Good example of one start up that is getting lots of attention is Beacon Corp (BCON).

Joseph asks…

Integration of conventional and energy plants for the utilization of renewable energy sources?

I need to write project on this topic “Integration of conventional and energy plants for the utilization of renewable energy sources”. Any web sites or literature will help me! Any help is appreciated…

The Expert answers:

Do web searches on “co-fuels” or “cofuel” fired steam plants. A number of cities around the world use them for steam production for their central steam heat facilities and for electricity generation. Many utilize windfall and dead fall trees.

All it really means is that things like shredded tires and coal for example, or trash and coal, or trash and natural gas.

Many things moss peat can be burned along with coal or instead of coal to produce heat.

Anyone who supports nuclear is mal informed about nuclear and those companies promoting it. It leaves a legacy that will last longer than the sun, and it is an energy source that the global society has outgrown as it has matured, just as you outgrew your doctor dentons as you matured. Nuclear drinking water is a real possibility because so much is stored along rivers that supply or feed into rivers that supply drinking water to over half the US population. And they will be contaminated because dry cask storage was a short term fix that has become long term- they leak or now, or soon will.

Nuclear gives new meaning to “…a beaming smile…”

David asks…

What are some negative consequences of renewable energy sources?

I dont need specific consequences of renewable energy sources like Wind Energy can only function when Wind is present. A broad and more general answer is what i am looking for. I can think of one very obvious one which is that it is not as efficient as fossil fuels. But i need more, thx 😀

The Expert answers:

Lets take wind energy in the city of New York! It will take at least 1million wind energy towers to provide energy just to the city of NY. Question were we will put them? It will take acres and acres of land to put them, then comes the next issue, we will have to divert airplanes from their normal fly path to avoid collisions with the towers, that will create an increase in fuel consumption for the airlines, next issue , birds that will get kill during seasonal emigration, and finally the cost to put the one million towers and to maintanence of them will be gastronomical. Example. During the winter gets what will hapen ? Durins storms? During thundering? As for organic, every body knows that was a fiasco and the mony wasted by using corn to produce fuel. First it created a demand for it (the corn) andevry other product that use corn went sky rocket in price, then here came the storms and the corn fills went under water, dammaging the crops, along with the winter. So her it comes solar panels, it only work with the sun up, againg winter comes and then frossen crystals crack, need lots of acres to actully had enough power to lit a gread, the same question comes were will going to put them? Them comes the enviromentalist and animal activist, assumming we put the towers and the sun panels we will have to use some of the land dedicated to animal santuaries ,forest will be deforest in order to clear the lands to put the toys. So i said lest drill and use our natural resources they are working very well. Hypocresy in the theme, eviromentalist espesilly females will scream about saving the earth ,pollution, and waste, but they will never give up PAMPERS!!!!! They will never go back to the diapers that need to clean a wash. Organic farms are using humane waist to fertilize the land, well if the idea was not to put quemicalsin the ground wy is ok tho use humand waist , after all it is procces with amonia and a good amount of it.

How is sustainable development sustainable? *sigh*?

I know its a hard question. At our school the statement ‘sustainable development as a concept is unsustainable’ came up. i disagreed but couldnt come up with any valid arguments.
Lets see if anyone here can. it will be much appreciated ; )

The Expert answers:

Sustainable development :

Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the natural environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future. The term was used by the Brundtland Commission which coined what has become the most often-quoted definition of sustainable development as development that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

The field of sustainable development can be conceptually broken into three constituent parts: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and sociopolitical sustainability.

The United Nations Division for Sustainable Development lists the following areas as coming within the scope of sustainable development:

* Agriculture
* Atmosphere
* Biodiversity
* Biotechnology
* Capacity-building
* Climate Change
* Consumption and Production Patterns
* Demographics
* Desertification and Drought
* Disaster Reduction and Management
* Education and Awareness
* Energy
* Finance

* Information for Decision Making and Participation
* Integrated Decision Making
* International Law
* International Cooperation for Enabling Environment
* Institutional Arrangements
* Land management
* Major Groups

Steven asks…

can anyone tell me the name of a sector of the horse industry that takes steps to sustainable development?

i need to evaluate the success of measures taken by one sector of the horse industry towards sustainable development and can’t find any pieces that have the right information. has anyone got some good websites for me to look on?

The Expert answers:

In February’s Equus Magazine, there is an article on ways to be green around the farm. This may be a good place to start!
Http://www.equisearch.com/equus/
It is still on the front page of their website too.

It gives a lot of suggestions and tips for horse owners to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Perhaps you could use this to look at the horse industry’s efforts in general rather than a specific sector??

Oh—and make sure to check out the “related articles” at the bottom once you click on the main story—looks like lots of good stuff for you!

Linda asks…

Anyone know a good site to find info in Sustainable Development?

I have to do a presentation on Sustainable developement. It’s pretty broad. I tried the search engines but I’m getting stuff on the UN commission on Sustainable development. Nothing on what it is or anything. Can any one help?

Susan asks…

Can anyone suggest recent ‘sustainable development for tourism’ examples in the UK?

I’m looking to undertake an investigation of the extent of public / community involvement in sustainable development for tourism and require some assistance in locating a case study. The internet turns up lots of well-researched (large-scale) examples, but I’m after a LOCAL / VILLAGE / TOWN example.

Has anything happened in your area (or a neighbouring one) where members of the public were heavily involved or, alternatively, where they were not consulted at all?

Thank you!

The Expert answers:

Http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/apr/28/plasticbags.frontpagenews

Modbury, a tourist orientated town in Devon where the town’s retailers do not use plastic bags.

What is an online shop where people post up their homemade, eco-friendly, or steampunk, art and products?

Years ago I found this website that has all sorts of cool looking stuff like Steampunk jewerly, furniture and not just steampunk but a bunch of differnet stuff like fabrics, clothes, furniture, art. Ken asks…

What is rustic furniture? ?

I seen an ad where there selling a drawer of 5 cabinets that it says its rustic furniture. Eco friendly product does this mean its pressed wood? Or is it still made of solid wood? Can someone defined this t me so I can get a better understanding? Thank u

The Expert answers:

Hmm I think it means solid wood. Ikea just came out with lots of rustic furniture too. I dated a rodeo cowboy once, he rode broncs and bulls, grew up on a ranch in Texas and he went into his “backyard” cut down some trees and made his own bed frame, and all the tables in his house. It was amazing. That was some serious rustic furniture haha.

Betty asks…

eco friendly upholstery steam cleaning help?

I am super thrifty and have just bought all of my furniture for our new house as second hand. I also have a baby on the way any day now and would like to clean the upholstery-either professionally or myself. I can rent a steam cleaner from the store BUT am wondering if there is another compound to use besides the stuff that is typically used sold alongside the rental steamers…it needs to be non-toxic. Any idea? I am in the LA area. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Vinegar, Lemon Juice, Club Soda, Baking Soda all have great cleaning properties and are non-toxic. For the furniture, I would start by sprinkling baking soda all over the fabric, then vacuum it with a regular vacuum – this should help get rid of odor. Steam cleaning will then sanitize the upholstery. Also, many products are being sold now that are safer to use, World Market carries a brand that I believe is non-toxic, though it is a little more expensive, and even Target sells Method brand which I think is also non-toxic. Be careful though because if something is bio-degradable, that doesn’t mean it is non-toxic.

Good luck and congrats on the little one!

Richard asks…

what is eco friendly wood?

would like to know the definition of what eco friendly wood is, and how it applies to furniture

The Expert answers:

I imagine there are different types. For example, bamboo is eco friendly b/c it grows quickly and is easily replanted. For furniture, ecofriendly probably means reclaimed. It’s a great way to reduce your footprint. Plus, reclaimed furniture usually has more personality.

The resume is pretty good, but honestly I noticed quite a few typos/grammatical mistakes that you should fix before you send it out. You may want a second party to read the resume for errors, sometimes it’s hard to proofread your own work. Your resume really needs to be error free, especially with your background.

For example, from just one of the points on your resume.

English learners students? (just English learners, or English students, not both)
identify and analyze and solve? (identify, analyze and solve)
data or available information gather from? (gatherED from)

re: Provide one on one tutoring services to English learners students while working with a group of experts to identify and analyze and solve issues based on the data or available information gather from the service provided.

Here you go – enter your personal information and see how you compare to the most recent admitted class at JHU.

Http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/academictracker/servlet/ACTServlet?pg=2&collegeId=808

You look like a good candidate.

However, with some of the finest schools in the world in the California state system, I cannot imagine any reason to go to JHU for an undergrad degree except ego. It would make much more sense to go to Berkeley or UCLA and then to JHU for your grad or professional degree.

Richard asks…

What would a more open-minded Liberal America look like?

Here is what I want to see in America:

2010 November: Democrats gain seats in both the House and the Senate

2011 January: Public Option passes for Universal Healthcare

2011 February: US Government proposes High-speed rail system project New York to San Francisco at 600 miles per hour….hires tons of US engineers, appropriates money to higher education for science/engineers

2011 March: New Public Housing projects, Government-subsidized intentional communities, eco-villages

2011 April: US Government creates a social program to teach Americans how to manufacture their own iphones and blackberries, how to grow their own vegetables, how to fuel their cars with vegetable oils without octane, so they can become self-reliant of oil corporations

2011 May: US Government begins a massive Nuclear Defense Shield Proposal that would include eliminating all nuclear warheads and improving shields to protect us from foreign invaders

2011 June: USA finally passes national gay marriage….gays, lesbians, bi, transgenders celebrate…

2011 July: (Government introduces a summer taxcut for anyone earning less than $500,000 pays 0% of income tax, every penny over 500,000 taxes at the 39.5% Bill Clinton taxrate)

Beginning 2011 August: A massive, and I mean massive effort begins to start cutting programs we don’t need….

The first big cut: Pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan
Cutting back big on Medicare/Medicaid and health services and instead promoting in-house volunteer clinics
Eliminating 100% of bank bailouts
For K-12, elimination of the public school system – instead Government funds the self-reliance programs
We would eliminate the Recovery Act
Eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture, eliminate the Department of Energy…we don’t need one when everyone is not self-reliant
Eliminate Social Security….free up that money…..instead we would have the US reward states that exempt seniors of all property taxes and rent…..it would become a states issue

We would eliminate so many Government programs during the last quarter of 2011 that we’d have a Budget Surplus, Public Option Healthcare, a High-speed rail system, an end to oil addition, elimination of the drug war…..it would be a whole new America!

Why put everything into health and safety when we’re not safe if we cant be modern and we have no Govt budget?

Your Questions About Green Living

Linda asks…

What are the three counties that use the most energy in the world?

and what are the two that use the least amount of energy? do they use mostly renewable or non-renewable energy? And do these counties have a plan to cut back on their use of non-renewable energy?

The Expert answers:

The most?
USA
China
and probably Brazil

China uses very little reneawble energy, Brazil fuels all their cars with ethanol made from sugarcane, so they’d probably have the most, the USA would be in the middle

Countries that use the least would be small, poor, sparsely populated countries, Bhutan is probably one of them

Laura asks…

is this saying appropriate for a renewable energy poster?

I’m drawing a poster for a contest, and it’s promoting the use of renewable energy. I have the title coming across the top as “Cleaner Energy for a Cleaner World“, and I would like to have this sentence in the middle of the page:

“Using renewable energy sources can lower expenditures, create jobs and a healthier environment for all.”

I’m not sure about the “lower expenditures”, what can I replace that with? I just want to make sure that I’m not saying an incorrect phrase haha. Thanks!!

The Expert answers:

I would replace this with “improve energy security and cut our dependence on foreign oil”.

Http://energy-statistics.blogspot.com/2010/09/us-renewable-energy-statistics.html

Mark asks…

How much money does the world spend on renewable energy?

I was wondering how much money does the world as a total spends on renewable energy?

The Expert answers:

17 trillion a year

Donna asks…

Can renewable energy provide the world with all its energy needs and if so then when?

This is including the increase of energy requirements in the future which is meant to increase by 80% by 2030. If you could provide supporting links that would be great.

The Expert answers:

That’s a loaded question… We first need to reduce our requirements for more energy. Conservation and efficient use should go hand in hand with developing alternative, renewable clean energy. For example solar and wind energy have their own environmental impacts(though not as negative as fossil fuels), if environmental concerns are assumed in your question. Otherwise just go nuclear if your only concern is energy sources and not its environmental impact.

Sandra asks…

How does renewable energy help in third world countries, and how does it improve there quality of life?

The Expert answers:

One example I can think of is a solar oven. People can cook without having to chop down all the trees in the area or wander to look for wood. The solar oven also doesn’t create smoke pollution.

Lizzie asks…

Is the notion of alternative energy being economically viable wishing thinking?

Skeptics have always maintained that if alternative energy was viable in a free market economy, they would already be in use. Proponents of global warming have always criticized skeptics as being stupid, uniformed and uneducated for maintaining this position and that alternative energy was indeed viable.

It turns out shell oil has backed out of the alternative energy investments saying it is economically a poor investment.

“Shell will no longer invest in renewable technologies such as wind, solar and hydro power because they are not economic, the Anglo-Dutch oil company said today… The company said that many alternative technologies did not offer attractive investment opportunities. Linda Cook, Shell’s executive director of gas and power, said: “If there aren’t investment opportunities which compete with other projects we won’t put money into it. We are businessmen and women. If there were renewables [which made money] we would put money into it.”

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/mar/17/royaldutchshell-energy

The Expert answers:

Alternative energy is available now, however it’s the believers that are stopping this technology from being put into place.

Nuclear Power can provide the US with almost all our power needs. However environmentalists are scared about transporting waste, even though the waste is very small and transported every day.

Another excuse is the cost which is only higher because environmnetalists sue Nuclear power plants to prevent them from operating causing prices to rise. Truthfully, they are just scared of modern technology they don’t understand.

By switching to nuclear, we could reduce the green house gas output of the US by 50%.

Charles asks…

How efficient are fossil fuels compared to alternative energy sources?

By alternative energy sources I mean things like solar, wind, nuclear, geothermal, hydroelectric, etc. I want to see how efficient they are, not really paying attention to how polluting they are.

The Expert answers:

You can’t make a meaningful comparison that way.
A coal plant, for example, may have 30% thermal efficiency. The coal it burns, though, comes from plants that had only about a 2% efficiency in turning sunlight into biomass. A nuclear plant using the same steam technology as a coal-fired plant has about the same thermal efficiency, but involves far less fuel – indeed, some nuclear plants make more fuel than they use.
Thin-film solar panels are only about 1/5 as efficient, area for area, as standard silicon solar panels, but cost about 1/10 as much. Either panel has far higher overall efficiency than a coal-fired plant, but involves manufacturing costs that makes their electricity more expensive if subsidiary costs (like adverse health effects) are neglected.
Relative availability of energy is also an issue. Solar and wind aren’t always available. A hydroelectric dam becomes useless if the river feeding its reservoir dries up.
The wiki article referenced discusses relative costs of electricity produced by various methods.

Daniel asks…

What alternative energy sources would you recommend for Third world countries?

What alternative energy sources would you recommend for Third world countries to acquire instead of nuclear technology?

The Expert answers:

It depends on region and climate of country. For example, geothermal energy – in regions with high volcanic activity. Solar energy – for countries with enough amount of sunny days. Energy of sea waves, wind, tides etc. For example, technical potential of solar energy in Russia (2.3 mlrd t of relative fuel per year) is approximately in 2 times higher than present consumption of fuel.

Donna asks…

What alternative energy ETFs should I buy?

I’m not confident with my abilities to invest in individual stocks and thought an ETF would be a good option. Would an alternative energy ETF be a good investment now? Any recommendations for which ones? Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Here is a list of all alternative energy ETFs with some description of each.
Http://etf.stock-encyclopedia.com/category/alternative-energy.html

But I’m not so sure that alternative energy investments would bring good profits. Alternative energy might help the economy in general by keeping energy costs down and decreasing pollution. But in terms of making profits, I don’t see it as a big money-maker.

In most cases, it’s cheaper to extract oil and gas from the ground than to produce alternative energy. And even when the oil runs out, every country and every company will be free to get into the alternative energy business. And when there is a lot of competition. Then profit margins are unlikely to be high.

Robert asks…

What are some disadvantages to being an alternative energy researcher? Or, why wouldn’t you want to be one?

I’m doing a career research project on alternative energy researchers, and I need help finding information about a “critical issue,” or disadvantage, of being in the career. Any ideas?

The Expert answers:

In less you are in collage now by the time you graduate the job market and technology will be on to something else.

As they say there is only jobs and money in an idea or technology as long as the research has not caught up with the product.
Once the product is developed the money and research funds go out of it and it becomes an item on the shelf.
Once it becomes an item on the shelf the value goes away, the money and the job.

In your first year of collage take you core science classes and try and figure out what is your passion.
Once you find your passion follow it in all earnest and your success and feeling of fulfillment will come out of it.

Don’t pursue the job, pursue your intereststs you have to remember it is what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Michael asks…

What is life like in California since the implementation of many Sustainable Development laws?

California was given the green light to fully implement Sustainable Development. I just wondered how it effects the average citizen. I’ve noticed they are in the news often for very uncommon laws even involving religion. Curiosity.

The Expert answers:

Most folks in Cali are too busy trying to ‘sustain’ themselves to worry about agendas. According to the BLS current population survey (CPS), the unemployment rate for California rose 0.1 percentage points in August 2011 to 12.1%. The state unemployment rate was 3.0 percentage points higher than the national rate for the month. And we all know govt lies about the numbers. Real unemployment there is closer to 20%.

Charles asks…

What are the merits and demerits of sustainable development?

i really need the answers quick to finish my project on sustainable development

The Expert answers:

A major merit of sustainable development is the preservation of resources for future use.

The major demerit of sustainable development is that human beings are too impatient. Without the promise of super-organic economic growth, most people would simply fall asleep and do nothing.

The best solution is to have a major catastrophe that eliminates 80% of the world population, so that we can start over and the planet gets a rest.

Sharon asks…

Can any body help me about Sustainable Development in Information Technology?

I am working on Sustainable development in computers and Information Technology (Thesis work), plz suggest me some useful links or books if you know.

The Expert answers:

Do you mean sustainable performance increases through technological advances in hardware, or sustainable manufacturing methods, or sustainable software development techniques?

I don’t know too much about the first one, but for the second you may want to look into “lean manufacturing” (the wikipedia page for it has a lot of links), and for the third you may want to read this: http://www.martinfowler.com/articles/newMethodology.html

Daniel asks…

what must be done in the middle east to secure oil and create sustainable development?

What must be done in the middle east to perserve order and maintain access to valuable energy resources? How can we create sustainable development in developing countries?

The Expert answers:

Middle East is not the Region or Political territory of USA.

Hence US should stop its threats, occupations, wars and mass killings.

It must stop meddling those countries internal politics and learn to give and take respects each other.

If USA needs energy security then it can estabilish business partners and share the technological know-hows for further developments.
