James asks…

Alternative energy – drilling to create electricity from geothermal?

I recently read that it might be possible to drill a hole down into the earth to a depth where the rock is naturally very hot, pump water into the drill hole and then power a turbine with the steam that is created to generate energy. (It’s like a DIY version of electricity generated from natural geysers). It’s clean and can be done almost anywhere. Has anyone heard of this? Is this a viable alternative energy?

The Expert answers:

Yeah its alreay been done but its not diy.

Sandy asks…

What degree would I need to pursue a career in alternative energy?

Wind and solar energy seem to have a promising future. What degrees would be sufficient to become a specialist in the alternative energy field?
What is the field of study called? What should I get a degree in?

The Expert answers:

Look at www.dol.gov, and it will give you a wealth of information. Especially under the Occupational Outlook Handbook. It will give you the education needed, job outlook until 2014, salary, work conditons, hiring companies, etc. We need more alternative energy available and I want to commend you for looking into this field. Good luck and Peace.

Mark asks…

What is the percentage of alternative energy sources in your country?

Are alternative power sources (solar energy, wind power, etc) popular in your country?
What is the percentage of their use?

The Expert answers:

On the order of 1% in the U.S. In some states, like California and Texas it is higher, but still less than 5%. I am not counting hydroelectric power in that because it is a traditional source, although totally renewable.

According to the source below, Denmark gets almost 20% of its electricity from wind.

Robert asks…

What are the top three reasons to finding an alternative energy source?

I want to know the top three reasons as to why an alternative energy source should be found. what are they?

The Expert answers:

1. The price of gasoline is skyrocketing.
2. The price of gasoline is skyrocketing.
3. The price of gasoline is skyrocketing.

Paul asks…

What environmental issues need to be considered when choosing an alternative energy source?

It is for an energy assignment in science about alternative energy. You know the usual stuff solar power wind power all that stuff. what do you have to think about when you’re thinking about choosing an alternative energy source

The Expert answers:

Mainly local environmental impact.
Eg. Daming a river for a hydro turbine is no loger considered environmental as it damages the local environment.
As microhydro turbines don’t as they only divert part of the river a bit.

The embodied energy is also important factor when considering what alternative energy is going to used.
For example solar hot water heaters have an energy payback of about 1 year.
Solar Panels have an energy payback of about 6-8 years.
As the silicon is a rare metal when requiring to build them.
Then it would be the logical step to first use a solar hot water system before putting solar cells up on your roof.

Same with wind power you also need to consider viability of the energy source at that location….
If there is not enough wind or too much turbulence.
This can effect what energy source is considered most viable at that location.

Eg. Hawaii is about to turn it’s whole electricity economy to geothermal as it is most viable as they are on a volcanoe.

Ken asks…

What are the major hidden items, loopholes, and drawbacks of the “Climate and Energy Bill”?

I’ve heard a lot of rumors, but I don’t really know. It just seems like this is the latest bill that everyone from Congress is getting pressure from Obama to pass without spending time to read first. I have heard that hydroelectric is excluded as a renewable energy source, people will perform “energy audits” on homes-hello 1984, jobs could move offshore due to the restrictions, and this will be another tax on people–except that credits will be given to low income consumers. With this, the healthcare bill, and other proposals, when do we run out of other people’s money to pay for this stuff? Does the bill really protect the environment?

The Expert answers:

Obama promised to help the poor and middle class. This energy bill raises the cost of energy. The least able to afford these price increases will suffer. I expect more people will be freezing in the future. It appears Obama is just another lying politician who sticks it to the poor, including a lot of Black Americans.

John asks…

If McCain cares about Energy, why was he the ONLY Senator not present to cast his vote?

Sen. John McCain missed two critical energy votes on H.R. 6, The Energy Independence and Security Act, in December 2007. These votes – on December 7th and 13th – would have stopped debate and allowed a vote on an energy bill that included critical tax incentives for renewable energy sources – a bill to strengthen national security, lower energy costs, reduce global warming, grow our economy and create new jobs, and increase American energy independence. These votes were critical to making a $21 billion investment in clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency, including a $3,000 tax credit to help working families afford fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. On the morning of December 13th, Sen. John McCain was the only United States Senator to not vote on this measure.

Paul asks…

Are there any states that have payment for net metering beyond your usage?

If you have renewable energy generation capability such as solar or wind, and are connected to the grid and net metered for electricity, are there any states that require the utility company to continue to pay you for the power you produce beyond what you use annually? I’ve heard that they wipe your slate clean each year in every state, and you loose any credits beyond what you have used. Is that true? And if so, can you point me to an official source to find out more? MANY THANKS!!

The Expert answers:

If you produce less power than you use, you get a credit. Potentially, if the credit becomes large enough they would write you a check. On the individual consumer level, it would be extremely rare for anyone to produce a surplus in any given month let alone turn a yearly profit. So, don’t let the fear of “losing any credits” stop you.

If you go into large scale power production, you would have to go through the siting process and secure a buyer for your produced power.

Richard asks…

Is Obama the best first-year president on the environment in US history?

Carl Pope, National Executive Director of the Sierra Club thinks so. “This is by far the best first year on the environment of any president in history, including Teddy Roosevelt”. His accomplishments:

Increased gas mileage standards for cars and light trucks 40 percent, from today’s 25 mpg to 35 mpg by 2016.

Blocked Bush administration rules to open the California coast and 77 federal sites near Utah’s Arches and Canyonlands national parks to new oil and gas drilling.

Begun a process in December in which the Environmental Protection Agency will, for the first time, restrict the amount of greenhouse gases industry can release.

Signed a bill in March establishing 2.1 million new acres of federally protected wilderness.

Announced tougher new national smog standards from the EPA this month.

Issued EPA rules requiring large U.S. ships to cut soot emissions by 85 percent.

Signed a stimulus package that included more than $50 billion in funding and tax credits for renewable energy projects.
http://www.mercurynews.com/top-stories/ci_14218053?nclick_check=1

What do you think – best first year president on the environment in US history, or has there been a better one?

The Expert answers:

I’ll give him the 2.1 million new acres of federally protected wilderness. Otherwise, I think court is out; signing legislation and pleasing environmental lobbyists is not the same thing as the legislation’s goals having been achieved. Thus what I hope is, in 10 years time, we will be able to look back on what was accomplished and confirm Carl Pope’s claim.

I still like Teddy – perhaps not for his first year, but simply for his lifelong interest in conservation and naturalism, beginning with the stories of the “Roosevelt Museum of Natural History” he started as a child (a collection later donated to the Smithsonian). He had substantial credibility entering the presidency, having already helped to save Yellowstone from commercial exploitation.

I might give Teddy the nod in conservation. Environmentalism? Maybe Obama. What did others do in their first year?

———————————————————————-

Dana, forgive me, but I can’t resist giving you this quotation:

There is an “absolute necessity of waging all-out war against the debauching of the environment… The bulldozer mentality of the past is a luxury we can no longer afford. Our roads and other public projects must be planned to prevent the destruction of scenic resources and to avoid needlessly upsetting the ecological balance.”

~ California Governor Ronald Reagan (who was unrivaled in setting aside lands for state parks)

You’re probably too young to remember the hatred and contempt people had for James Watt, Reagan’s Secretary of the Interior. Multiply whatever you have read by two.

Susan asks…

Has John McCain lost his credibility on being an earmark watchdog?

The Wall Street bailout bill – Financial Rescue resolution passing the Senate 74-25 loaded up with earmarks for House Republicans in the amount of $149 Billion in tax breaks, personal and yes corporations, including $17 Billion in credits for renewable energy. McCain who ‘suspended his campaign’ didn’t even speak on the floor of the Senate criticizing these ‘sweeteners’ nor did he motivate the House of Representatives to pass the modified version of the Financial Rescue bill.

Since the Bush Administration doesn’t cut any spending, how does adding an additional short fall in tax revenue of $149 Billion help fiscal conservatives that will now vote ‘yes’ in the House to a bailout with a net cost of $849 Billion?

http://www.fox44.net/Global/story.asp?S=9109653&nav=menu660_1

The Expert answers:

He lost his credibility when he chose Palin. AK has the highest earmark per capita totalling $192 billion. As soon as she became gov. Palin hired a lobbiyist to represent AK for the first time in AK history.

If the only thing McCain says he’d do differently than Bush economically is end earmark spending, it’s very ironic that he chose Sarah ‘Porkbarrel’ Palin as his running mate.

Fellow atheists (only, please), why are atheists angry? (warning: long question)?

I’m trying to compile a proper list explaining why atheists are angry, for all the times it’s asked here.

Is this why? Would you add anything to this list, or change anything?

The demonization of other religions, e.g. Christianity demonizing Pagans (“They’re devil-worshippers!”), the Romans demonizing Christians (“They’re atheists and cannibals!”).

Vilification of homosexuality, resulting in discrimination, parents disowning their children, murder, and suicide.

People and animals sacrificed as an offering to gods.

Censorship (often destructive) of speech, art, books, music, films, poetry, songs and, if possible, thought.

The discouragement of rational, critical thought.

Ha
Oh, the question didn’t post fully. I’ll have to repost in a few days.

I really wish Y!A would fix those bugs once and for all.

But that’s not worth being angry about.

The Expert answers:

I’m angry about the millions of people who die needlessly every day because the Catholic Church has worked so hard to prevent scientific advancement throughout its entire existence that we are centuries behind where we could have been, had so many luminary minds not been systematically suppressed or executed.

I’m angry about the millions of people who will continue to die for many more years because some superstitious mouthbreathers in one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world have managed to hold back stem-cell research because they embrace a definition of humanity based on a book written thousands of years ago by a pack of genocidal goatherders.

I’m angry about all the little kids who cry themselves to sleep every night because Mommy or Grandpa or some other loved one is being tortured forever and ever and ever. (I used to be one of those kids.)

I’m angry about the people who still pretend to believe in this superstitious crap because they are afraid of being ostracized or fired.

I’m angry about the billions of people who are the spiritual equivalent of mentally retarded because they were force fed a pile of dogmatic pig manure from childhood and are now incapable of making moral decisions or finding meaning in their lives without putting it in the context of an imaginary being who will give them an imaginary reward in an imaginary place when their imaginary soul leaves their very real body.

I’m angry about all the people who think that life is merely a test that may or may not qualify them for their important life.

I’m angry about the people who, as a result of this, believe that things must be guaranteed to be permanent to be meaningful–particularly since the guarantee they’re given is such a ridiculous fairy tale.

I’m angry that so many people think that without an imaginary friend to impress, there is no valid reason not to murder people, steal, rape children, or generally create misery in the world.

I’m angry that billions of people are so pig-ignorant to the beauty of the world around them that they need to invent a reason to be joyful.

I’m angry that we still need to have this discussion.

Why politically sensitive or non-offensive questions deleted?

Two weeks ago, I answered a question about why Britain is not returning artefacts to Ethiopia with two simple sentences:
“What China demands from Britain, they get. What Africa requests from Britain, sorry.”

The question had been there for a while, but 10 minutes after I submitted my answer, the question was “deleted”. My activity showed I had two points for having answered a deleted question. But I found the question was reproduced under another question id, without my answer. Having done lots of programming, I would know how to reindex a question too.

The few other questions I answered after was also deleted, even though they were mild questions and answers like as though someone was shadowing my Yahoo activities and preemptively deleting the questions I laid my hands on. Frightening.

Do you think Yahoo is sucking up to China or do you think there are lots of pro-China trolls submitting deletion requests for answers/questions not favourable to China?

Two months ago, I had a non-offensive question why American Evangelical Christians say that they should not spend time and resources on environmental issues so as not to be diverted from their important goal of spreading their gospel but yet they spend a lot of time and money getting politically involved refuting (or in more modern terms “refudiating”) that human activities causes harmful global warming. That they preach asking why should we take the risk of going to hell, and yet they spend time and money defending human activities that kills millions of unborn children worldwide. Yet all the while, their Jesus advocated a life of poverty and care for fellow humans.

There were quite a number of response, all of which were respectable, including from two pastors. That question was deleted. Why?

Frightening. Why??

The Expert answers:

It has been my experience that the YA censors or monitors always follow the path of “Political Correctness”. If they allow ONLY what they want to allow. If Yahoo were a government, it would be called a dictatorship. If any Yahoo censor disagrees w/ a posted opinion, the opinion is deleted, under the guise that it was a “violation”. Trust me, I’ve had more than my share of “violations.”
Yahoo cannot take criticizm.

In a forum, where one is invited to express one’s opinion or feelings about a comment or subject matter, one is free to do so, unless Yahoo thinks someone’s feelings may get hurt, or if they disagree. They then delete that person’s opinion, under a BS heading of a “violation”. The only one can do, is stop posting opinions or comments. Yahoo doesn’t care, as they are too arrogant.
I shouldn’t even post this comment as it is more than likely to be treated as a “ranting, or raving, and thus, a violation of the Yahoo Community standards.” I say, screw you, Yahoo!!

What’s a good catchphrase for a flyer fighting deforestation?

In English class, we have this assignment: we have to find an environmental issue, make a poster about it and a flyer for an organization we supposedly founded that fights the environmental issue we chose. My group and I chose deforestation, and on the flyer we need a good catchphrase or slogan that illustrates well our goal. If you could help me find a good wordplay or pun that encourages people to leave a carbon footprint or help protect the trees, specifically in the Amazon and/or Central Africa, it would be much appreciated!
PS: if the assignment sounds a bit easy, it’s because I go to a French school. We study English as a second language. Even if I’m fluent 😉

Lizzie asks…

Who are the individual ‘giants’ in the area of sustainable development in the world and the UK and why?

The individual people/persons who have worked, authored/written or spoken in the area on principles and practices of sustainable development and its positiveness etc.

The Expert answers:

Rio Tinto. Cos if they don’t prove that what they do is sustainable, then they will not get the necessary permits to run their business.

Susan asks…

What are some examples of successful companies that have pursued sustainable development programs?

I am doing an assignment in my business class. I understand what sustainable deveopment means. I am just having a horrible time trying to find some examples. If I could be directed to where I could find examples. I have been looking up different things and I am not having any luck. I guess I just don’t really how to look up something like this. Any help would be appreciated.

The Expert answers:

Three successful companies that have pursued sustainable development are Bank of America, which reduced its paper use by 32%, DuPont, which reduced greenhouse gasses by 63%, and Starbucks, which uses recycled coffee-cup sleeves and saves 78 thousand trees per year.
I am also a business student and had a hard time finding them as well.

John asks…

Difference between Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development?

Does anyone know what are the main differences between Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

The Expert answers:

CSR and Sustainability are interrelated and many use it interchangeably as well. However, I find it useful to distinguish between CSR and Sustainability in a business context.

For businesses, it is useful to think about CSR in the context of the vision/mission of the business. What are the responsibilities of the business, why does it exist, and how it will go about meeting those responsibilities and goals.

It is useful to think about Sustainability is the context how the business will operate, especially with a focus on the natural resources it consumes both directly (e.g., coal) and indirectly (e.g., electricity). How will the business be operated in way that allows it to make a profit today while not compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs.

Charles asks…

where can I find eco friendly wrapping paper for a wedding gift?

The Expert answers:

I believe that Hallmark has wrapping paper made out of recycled paper that, in turn is easily recycled.

The less plastic, metal, and glitz the more eco-friendly and recyclable the paper is.

I have wrapped two different wedding gifts in brown mailing wrap; in large part because of the sizes of the gifts and the cost of adequate wedding wrap for them. The first was for a spring wedding. I used pink camalias from the yard and florist’s ribbon on the front of the gift. The second was a fall wedding and I used some super bright, orange maple leaves and cloth ribbon on the front.

Lisa asks…

Good Stores for Eco Products?

I am organizing an Eco friendly gift shop at my school around christmas and i am trying to locate stores that have some inventory of eco friendly products ( biodegradable, made from recycled materials, living green tools etc) I have been looking all over the internet I was wondering if you know of any miscellaneous stores that sometimes carry eco friendly products or if you have any information on the making of soap that would be greatly appreciated

The Expert answers:

Hi there!
There are SO many great products on the market that are eco friendly and also fun- perfect for gifts! I own a natural soap company, and make a huge assortment of handmade-from-scratch, vegan, all-vegetable oil soap that are made with only sustainably-sourced ingredients. I would say that half of all the soaps I sell are bought with the intention of being given as gifts. You can find LOTS of natural bar soaps on google (just search for natural bar soap)- and many will offer a discount on larger quantities if you just send them a note asking.

Some of my FAVORITE bath accessories are sold by a company called “Envirotextile.” They sell the greatest bath scrubbies and washcloths on the market- and when you buy in bulk, you can save big. Here’s a link to their site: http://www.envirotextile.com/agave-products/index.html They use agave fiber from the agave cactus to weave their products. The fibers are left over from the manufacture of tequila, and would ordinarily just be considered waste, but this company has figured out to use the fibers to make an excellent fabric- similar in texture to jute or hemp- that is biodegradable, and skin-friendly- definitely great “living green” products. I prefer their products over loofah, because loofah tends to get mildewy and moldy over time, while agave fiber is naturally mildew and mold resistant.

As far as information on the making of soap- I can definitely help you there! Soap is made by combining lye, water (or juice, tea, beer, milk, etc), and oils. The lye used is either sodium hydroxide (bar soap), or potassium hydroxide (liquid soap) and both can be bought on the internet from places such as The Lye Depot. Successful soap making is extremely dependent on proper measuring and formulating. Too much lye can create soaps that burn skin. Too little can cause soaps that never harden, or that make skin feel sticky and oily. To begin, water and lye are combined, which creates heat. Oils are melted and blended. When the lye solution and the oils have cooled to a certain temperature, they are combined and mixed. Eventually, the solution will “trace” (thicken), and resemble pancake batter. At this point, essential oils or fragrance oils can be added, along with any colorants that are wanted. The thick batter is poured into molds, and allowed to sit, generally covered with towels or a blanket, for a day or so. During that time, the soap will heat up, and cool again, and become hard. After it is unmolded, it can be cut into bars. Then, you must wait until the soap has cured to use it. This can take up to about 4 weeks or so. During this time, water will evaporate out of the bars, and the soap will get harder. There are MANY websites with great tutorials on soapmaking- You may like checking out www.soapcalc.net for some useful information. It also has a great program for formulating your own soap recipes.
Good Luck with your gift shop!!

Ken asks…

Eco-friendly/”green” gift tips?

One of my best friends is turning 24 this week, and she doesn’t really need anything. She has been working really hard at going green lately: taking classes, using more efficient things around the house, and not eating meat in addition.

I wanted to get a gift to honor her efforts. Like, planting a tree in her name, or adopting an animal or something like that. Anyone know any good sites for that?

The Expert answers:

Does she have her re-usable shopping bags yet? If not, get a few (don’t want to use the same one for food and household cleaners!). Fill one with green household cleaners and one with green and/or organic bath/skin products.

Ruth asks…

I am looking for a green gift basket I can give someone how is eco-friendly. Does anyone have any ideas?

The Expert answers:

You could make the basket yourself by putting reusable plastic water bottle(s), reusable bags, and maybe some rechargeable batteries. You could even get plastic water battle(s) and reusable bags that say Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. These items might give that person the need or feel too do those things.

Donald asks…

I need a cute poem to put on an invitation for a co-ed “green” baby shower.?

The invitation should inspire people to purchase eco friendly gifts for the baby (no plastic bottles, cloth diapers, petroleum, etc), sex unknown. Maybe with the title something like, “Hey! Baby Smith is going green-help us celebrate” only better worded than that, of course.

The Expert answers:

Lots of people choose to buy green colored items for a sex unknown baby shower…perhaps some play on words with that could work out.
“Finally! A reason to buy all green baby clothes…”
“You are invited to Jane Doe’s Eco-friendly baby shower @ 123 elm street on July 31st, 2008 @ 7:15pm. Gifts and decorations that support our environment (no plastic bottles, cloth diapers, petroleum, etc–or here you could give positive examples) are requested to celebrate the coming of baby Doe. Here are some items/store suggestions for the happy momma: (list) “

How do I make other teens care about environmental issues?

I’m trying to get students at my school become aware of environmental issues. I am myself a student, but I don’t how how to make them relate to these problems in order to get them involved. How do I make them to care?
I trying to start an environmental club, and I could really use some help on how make them join the club.

The Expert answers:

You need to make it relate to them..tell them how a clean healthy environment supplies, air, food and water to them. Tell them how many medicines, foods, etc come from plants and from animals that pollinate plants. If they know that their future will depend on the environment, they may be interested in preserving it. Try to plan fun activities, touring a wildlife rehabilitation center where you can see animals being cared for, park clean-up where you could have a picnic before or after the cleaning, a camp-out clean up, etc.

Ruth asks…

What tactics do Corporations use to keep environmental issues from becoming social problems?

Corporations use tactics to keep environmental issues from becoming social problems… What are a few of these tactics we see here in the U.S.?

The Expert answers:

How many environmental problems that affect the health and property of people do you hear about on TV, in magazines or even your local newspaper? I think certain kinds of stories are squashed. By social problems, I assume you mean what would result if more people knew about these things and held the offenders accountable.

Joseph asks…

Are there any good online message boards concerning environmental issues such as conservation?

I was hoping there were some good message boards/forums for people to discuss environmental/wildlife conservation issues. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The Expert answers:

Wel we are writing a blog for environmental and other public service issues. We have just started it. And have written an article based on “hunger and poverty” which will be posted before the dawn. Our next article is based on pollution.

If you are interested keep in track with us. You are most welcome to share your views as comments

our blog’s URL will be http://v3musketeers.blogspot.com/

Lisa asks…

Why have environmental issues become important to Asian countries?

Why have environmental issues appeared on the international agenda?

The Expert answers:

Because of over pollution in asian counries

Sharon asks…

What kind of environmental issues are out there?

What kind of environmental issues are out in local, nationwide and planet wide areas?

I’m just a little curious on what’s going on around the Earth that we aren’t noticing so much of.

(examples are global warming, recycling, forest preserves, etc)

The Expert answers:

For one of my courses, we have our final project on “The Greatest Environmental Issue”, i.e. The most serious threat to the long-term well-being of human population. My professor made this list:

Air Pollution
Decline of Fish Stocks
Forestry/Deforestation
Genetically-Modified Organisms (GMOs)
Global Warming / Climate Change
Loss of Biodiversity
Mineral/Energy Resource Depletiion
Overpopulation
Pesticide Overuse
Soil Degradation/Depletion
Water Pollution (toxic, and/or hormone mimicking)

Hope this helps. I urge you to look into these issues; each one is quite fascinating (and terrifiying!).

Sharon asks…

Which of these AGW solutions sound “socialist” to you?

There are a lot of posters here who think that AGW is some sort of communist/socialist/liberal conspiracy to take charge of our economy.

But (aside from the fact that unpalatable solutions don’t mean that the problem is false) there are a lot of solutions to AGW that, well, I don’t see how any sane person could call them communist, socialist, or in some cases even particularly liberal.

Off the top of my head:
government actions:
Cutting or entirely eliminating subsidies to or special tax breaks for oil and coal producers and fossil-fuel power plants
Replacing some portion of the national income tax with a carbon tax, or any other roughly revenue-neutral carbon tax
Offering tax breaks to alternative energy producers
Converting vehicles the government owns to use alternative power sources
Instituting energy-saving measures in government buildings, such as insulation, turning off lights and computers, and installing low-energy lighting
Expediting permits for biofuel, nuclear, and other non-fossil-fuel power plants
Allowing permits for plants intended to turn “spent” nuclear fuel into lower-power energy generation

personal actions:
Drive less
Turn off appliances when not in use
Insulate your home where appropriate
Support your local economy by buying locally produced goods, or at least ones made in this country (that is, Buy American–substitute your country where appropriate)

Feel free to chime in with any other non-“communist” AGW solutions.
Peter: I think you might be surprised what would happen with a completely level playing field. Look up “oil from turkey guts”, for a start…
And how is it “picking winners” to cut special advantages one set of businesses currently enjoy (the various subsidies for oil and so forth), or instituting cost-saving measures in government offices (the energy-saving measures I mentioned)?
And I’m not saying “a government program to make everyone turn off their lights”, I’m saying the government turning off unneeded lights/computers/etc in their own offices, and private citizens individually turning off their own unneeded lights/computers/etc. And the latter applies to everything else I listed under “personal actions”, that’s why it’s under “personal actions”, not “government actions”

Bravozulu: how are the things I proposed *increasing* government? I suggested a revenue-neutral tax (no change in government income), tax breaks (that is, *less* money going to the government), reducing/easing government regulations, and what should ultimately be reductions in government spending (though they may require some initial investments). This is increasing government how, exactly?

Jim Z: on your article, I’d count the money lent to Brazil as an oil subsidy…

Matthew: I *hope* you’re joking…

Peter: corn ethanol is a bad idea for several reasons…

Dook: heh.
Er, that is, corn ethanol as a fuel. Corn ethanol as a beverage is… no worse than any other booze.
Bubba: I think you mean externalities. Despite the spell check choking on it.
Bravo: and why would buying electric vehicles be stupid? They make perfect sense for a lot of in-town type driving situations (my brother’s Leaf can go 100 miles on a charge, that will get him pretty much anywhere in town and back, I’d bet a lot of government vehicles would have similar use profiles)

The Expert answers:

Many of these “Dorks” don’t know what socialism, communism, free market, capitalism are. They just spew crap from Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and the rest of the GOP “think tanks” that long for Joesph McCarty.

Obviously, none are socialist.

Peter,

A part of the equation to have an absolutely free market you ignore is externalizes. It is absolutely impossible to impose all the costs associated with externalizes on a business. Society will always pay for some of it. This means that the prices of some of the worst polluting industries is too low. Part of the costs is picked up by society, not business. The effect is they socialize costs (pass the costs of a product or service on to the taxpayer) and privatize profit. If you want a truly level playing field, you must incorporate those cost into the price of product of service to reach the true market value.

Susan asks…

Do you agree with the Occupiers demands?

Free college, open borders and 2 trillion dollars.

Demand one: Restoration of the living wage. This demand can only be met by ending “Freetrade” by re-imposing trade tariffs on all imported goods entering the American market to level the playing field for domestic family farming and domestic manufacturing as most nations that are dumping cheap products onto the American market have radical wage and environmental regulation advantages. Another policy that must be instituted is raise the minimum wage to twenty dollars an hr.

Demand two: Institute a universal single payer healthcare system. To do this all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs and hand that money to wall st. investors.

Demand three: Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment.

Demand four: Free college education.

Demand five: Begin a fast track process to bring the fossil fuel economy to an end while at the same bringing the alternative energy economy up to energy demand.

Demand six: One trillion dollars in infrastructure (Water, Sewer, Rail, Roads and Bridges and Electrical Grid) spending now.

Demand seven: One trillion dollars in ecological restoration planting forests, reestablishing wetlands and the natural flow of river systems and decommissioning of all of America’s nuclear power plants.

Demand eight: Racial and gender equal rights amendment.

Demand nine: Open borders migration. anyone can travel anywhere to work and live.

Demand ten: Bring American elections up to international standards of a paper ballot precinct counted and recounted in front of an independent and party observers system.

Demand eleven: Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Debt forgiveness of sovereign debt, commercial loans, home mortgages, home equity loans, credit card debt, student loans and personal loans now! All debt must be stricken from the “Books.” World Bank Loans to all Nations, Bank to Bank Debt and all Bonds and Margin Call Debt in the stock market including all Derivatives or Credit Default Swaps, all 65 trillion dollars of them must also be stricken from the “Books.” And I don’t mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period.

Demand twelve: Outlaw all credit reporting agencies.

Demand thirteen: Allow all workers to sign a ballot at any time during a union organizing campaign or at any time that represents their yeah or nay to having a union represent them in collective bargaining or to form a union.

The Expert answers:

I don’t know what to say to all this. I am appalled! These so called “demands” are unrealistic and stupid. Life isn’t very hard in this country! Easiest way to make it in America: BE YOUR ONLY DEPENDENT UNTIL YOUR SUCCESSFUL!!!, get a job, any job, rent a room from somebody, save your money, go to technical school, get a job in your field so your not making minimum wage, use that money to pay for school. (If you need to take out college loans then do it but don’t complain about your debt, it’s your fault you chose to waste four years studying liberal science, chose a real study and stay in school as long as possible.) Doing only the minimum makes you worth the minimum. Keep striving for excellence and to better educate yourself. Constant progression, just because it doesn’t happen overnight doesn’t mean that your not getting anywhere. Success will take time and effort. In these demands all that is being asked is for the protesters to be allow to be lazy. No debt=no legal incentive to work-no creditors=no incentive to pay on time as agreed-$20hr min. Wage=no reason to progress life. Minimum wage shouldn’t be something you’re comfortable with it should be something you’re very uncomfortable with so you want to move forward and get away from such a low paying wage. Your progression=the country’s progression.
Stand up, get the joint out of your mouth so you can stop being lazy and progress yourself.

Daniel asks…

Does anyone know about renewable energy?

I’m doing some engineering coursework and I’ve got an essay but not sure how I would go about doing it? I’m right out of ideas on this one :|:|

I’ve got to write about the ‘Social and moral implications of the continuing development of renewable energy. Include EEC and world targets. Predict changes in life style the technologies will make’

Any ideas?

Thanks

The Expert answers:

I am an engineer myself and first want to say good luck with your career path.
Renewable energy in simple terms is “natural energy”. This means things like wind, solar, geothermal…etc. The whole reason renewable energy has been a huge issue this decade is because of the increasing amount of CO2 that is put into the atmosphere everyday and a scare of climbing global temps. Sources that create CO2 emissions would be coal plants, natural gas plants…etc. As an employee to a major energy company, the push nowadays is to invest in new greener technologies.

Will coal plants go away any time soon? No, coal plants currently produces 50% of the United States energy. 20% is natural gas and 20% is nuclear power. The remaining 10% is solar/geothermal/wind/hydro. So, to say the least, it will take time to implement greener energy sources. But from the movement I am seeing I believe it will happen and a large portion of energy will come from green sources in the future. How much? Who knows.

Also, I personally feel that nuclear energy will be an important step to reduce carbon emissions. Nuclear emits ZERO carbon dioxide and produces electricity 24 hrs a day, everyday. With growing population comes more demand for energy, and one nuclear plant produce much more electricity than several coal plants. As a side note, nuclear does not create as much nuclear waste as it is made out to. Truth is, most nuclear plants store there waste on the plant site in spent fuel pools and in concrete casings.

Good luck on your paper.

Nancy asks…

The world energy demand is ever increasing?

The world energy demand is ever increasing although the main source of energy supply is getting scarce, i.e. oil and gas.. Discuss why these types of alternative energy are still unacceptable. Is the problem with renewable energy purely technical? Or does it have problems related to politics and globalization
geothermal energy
biodiesel
biofuels
liquefied natural gas
liquid nitrogen
steam generators
geothermal energy and etc

The Expert answers:

Actually, Active5, all current forms of electrical energy generation are using steam to drive the generators. Even Nuclear power stations are just glorified steam engines. The problem with alternatives is the ‘base load’, the continuous production of alternating current at a steady rate. Electricity must be generated continuously, as we have no satisfactory method as yet of storing the huge quantities of direct current which would be needed for a base load draw. Things like geothermal, either in hot spring areas like Rotorua in New Zealand, or the deep hot rock areas of Australia, are seriously being considered, but are generally a long way from the national grid. However, if the deep rock system in South Australia works, that is a minor problem, as there are mines in the area which will help pay the cost by buying lots of power. I hope the rest of the world is doing similar research.

Donald asks…

Are there any types of odd/un-common types of alternative/renewable energy?

For my Principles of Engineering class I was assigned to research and explain a type of renewable/alternative energy in the world. I came across only the most common ones “Hydropower, Solar Power, Wind Power” and so on… I’m looking more along the lines of an energy that isn’t highly talked about or common for the everyday. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

You may get an answer to your question here http://newesolarpowerlights.org/

Sandy asks…

As a Christian, how do you view renewable energy?

Should we be concerned with conserving non-renewable fuels? Can renewable energy help us become better stewards of God’s creation? If the world is really under God’s control, should we really put all our time into these renewable sources?

The Expert answers:

Consider God’s divine hand and how he has the the four seasons to give different stages for life. In spring life spouts up from the old, among the decayed matter which it uses for growth – food, in summer it grows and blooms, in Autumn it begins the dying or hibernation process and shed the growth – such as leaves on the tree which insulate the ground to keep the tree roots warmer and to nourish the earth. Then in spring those decayed leaves have formed a rich layer of peat or black dirt from which the plants must grow.

Now do you see how recycling is part of God’s own plan?

Betty asks…

What are your activities, endeavors and dedications in mandating the use of renewable clean sources of Energy?

The foregoing is drafted to enhance awareness in the promotion and mandate to all the people in the world to use renewable and clean sources of Energy.

This is likewise meant to prohibit the utilization of Fossil sources of Energy as the same is proven harmful to our Environment.

The Expert answers:

Yes eventually fossil fuels should be reserved for the rich and famous, music and movie stars. The rest of us should settle down to changing our light bulbs sorting our trash, winding up our rubberband cars and paying even bigger energy costs and taxes for GW.

Why do estate/project residents not act like hippies, no mugging instead community sustainable living doing up

Lets see the excuse of the muggers, gangs, jukies, chavs, yobs, joyriders and associated scum is that on estates they are all poor, have no jobs, bored etc.

Im sorry so are hippy types living in squats and communies etc.

But unlike the estate scum these poor folk dont fight each other to see who gets to be top dog of respect and rob each other.

They work togehter as a team doing up their squats, operating sustainable living.

Pulling matterials out of skips to fix up the homes, they have community parties with no guns, they look out for each other, share skills, build community centres.

Have raves where they run generators on home made alcohol and cars or methane. Decorate the place on the cheap.

Say have a party where with one UV strip light and flourescent paper and UV string they can produce great effects putting scraps of flourectent material, sting and sticks they mach glow chandelerers.

Trading skills etc.

So why not on estates. They have time & people
Taking it in turn to run the creche so people can go out or to work.

Pooling together skills from what was taught in school.

Say if you cant afford petrol/diesel creating a bio diesel cracker or still to make alcohol not to get wasted on but as fuel.

Swapping skills to say do up the estate and decorate it in pretty colours whilst others sort food.

You jhave lots of bored unemplyed people often with skills.

Including mothers at home who could be doing this at home. and trading skills and abilities.

Scavenging what they can.

And instead of expensive nightclubs. Putting on raves. Working out how to sound proof the place.

All you have to do is convert ot eleiminate (dont matter how)the preditory scum who are the only reason the estate is poor.

As if the place is doen up nice and peaceful and safe people want to bring business and jobs in
And te big hard guys can make themselves useful lugging heavey stuff (good to impress ladies with muscells) or keeping out the dealers(ie crack and smack nasty ones not somones home made muschrooms and 70s strenght dope), muggers and other scum like a police support group

I like to use organic, sustainable products… paraben-free, etc… any good sites to share? I do already read the posts from Debra Lynn Dadd: http://www.dld123.com/ and I’m a fan of 7th Generation stuff. Just looking for more good stuff/recommendations, at a good price.

The Expert answers:

I’d try Wal-Mart!

David asks…

Does anyone else practice sustainable living?

Sustainable living, homesteading, etc. Who practices such lifestyles (maybe not full scale off the grid homesteading) and what do you do?
For example, we raise chickens and pigs, have a large vegetable and fruit garden and just built windmills on our property.
Roseagle: check out this link: http://www.instructables.com/id/Ted-Baer_s-Bicycle-Wheel-Windmill/
Thank you for your response, we just got goats last month and I am learning all about them! Du cks might be next because we are having quite a slug problem!
We collect worm castings as well, they are a big help with our hot boxes in the winter!

The Expert answers:

We have been living on a farm for seven years. These are just some of the things we do:

We grow most of our own vegetables and fruits. We sometimes slaughter animals for eating, or we eat wild caught game. We heat our home with wood from our own trees. We have a winter garden and eat fresh greens from it during the winter. We have a worm bin that produces castings which we use for starting plants in the spring, instead of buying potting soil. Our chickens live on deep letter which also makes soil for the garden. We compost all our scraps and garden waste. We produce hay right here for the animals to eat. We buy organic grains for our animals. We milk our goats and make cheese and other things from the milk. We do no-till gardening, so as not to upset the upper layers of the soil. We raise sheep for wool.

Preserving food is a way of life for us, and this includes drying and salting meats in the old style, and also a few non-conventional preservation methods. We bake our won bread from whole, organic grains (which we buy), because nutritional value is preserved in the whole grain. We would love to build a wood-fired brick oven.

We also keep bees, which is a favorite project of mine. Another thing I am very interested in is collecting wild herbs to make tinctures for medicinal use. I grow certain herbs for this same reason. We are also considering tapping the sugar maples for syrup, since we were recently given the equipment to do so.

We homeschool.

In short, our lives are home-centered. Because of milking, we are always near the farm, or at least one of us has to be. When we consider the alternative of accepting whatever turns up at the supermarket, we know there is no turning back for us. Every year we learn and do more new things. For example, this year we added ducks because they love to eat slugs.

Many people talk about this lifestyle as being “the simple life”. In truth, it is hard work. Many people seem to admire our lifestyle, but when it comes right down to it, there are few of us who are actually walking the walk.

Your windmill project sounds very interesting. I would like to know more about this.

Tonight we are expecting the first hard frost of the season. I could go on about this for a long while, but for now, I have work to do!

PS) Feeding goats at a rate of 1 cup of grain/ day in the winter keeps them in milk. We have one goat that is has been in milk for three years straight, and two that are in their second year.

PPS) Thanks for the link. Since we are not supposed to chat here, I have allowed email contact on my account. You can contact me with your email, if you wish, and maybe we can share more ideas.

The Expert answers:

Pure Citrus scented spray. It’s a 100% natural deodorizer with a pleasent citrus scent. It’s relatively expensive for a deodorizing spray — about $4.

Ruth asks…

How to have green home/eco-friendly?

O.k. I have a few questions about having a green home:

1. Is it true that ecofriendly homes cut the percentage of having a cold or being sick?

2. What type of floors are best, baboo, wood, carpet, what?

3. Type of lighting; what are good lights that you can use?

4. What are good furnitures; that don’t absorb alot of dust.

5. What is a good location for having an ecofriendly (or green home) home? The city, the suburbs, a farm, near an ocean?ect..

6. Last would the payment of lighting, water, electricity, be less? Meaning would the percentage of paying be less?

The Expert answers:

Here is a good site to help get you going: http://www.thegreenguide.com/

1. Yes.
2. Http://www.treehugger.com/ has great suggestions.
3. You should use florescent light bulbs like in this link: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5650617 there is a 12 pack for 20 bucks. Most likely changing all your light bulbs in your house will equal the electrical use of just 1 or 2 conventional light bulbs. Also they last for a extremely long time. So you don’t have to change light bulbs very often also saving you money.
4. I would highly suggest reading this link. Greening furniture has many different factors to it, and I could write a book about it LOL. But someone else already has so here ya go: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/01/how_to_green_your_furniture.php
5. Well living in the country would be a start if you would like to be surrounded with healthy air. The city has a lot of smog so I wouldn’t find it a very healthy place to live air quality wise. A place in the country that has a moderate time for winter would probably be best. I bet the cleanest air is in Alaska. LOL
6. Just changing your light bulbs and using florescent lighting will reduce costs alone so yes. However going green can be an expensive process.

Refer to the site below to find all your green suggestions. Also money saving tips on going green.
