Your Questions About Green Living

Helen asks…

I’m doing debate and I need reasons why eco friendly cars aren’t that friendly. can someone help me out?

The Expert answers:

Ethanol and biodiesel. They produce less CO2 per liter as gasoline and diesel. They produce less energy too. So the proper comparison is CO2 per 100 km. CO2 is about the same. The only thing that is eco is that ethanol and biodiesel are renewable. Biodiesel also includes fuel made from used restaurant fats so there is a recycle benefit.

Methanol, used by indy racers is wood alcohol. Methanol engines also produce CO2.

Hydrogen fuel cell and electric battery both require HUGE amounts of electricity. In case you haven’t noticed the ‘green’ places such as California already have HUGE shortages of electricity.

The electricity used to make the hydrogen or charge the battery might be clean as in hydro but is as likely to be dirty as in coal, oil, or nuclear.

Then there is the matter of toxic materials used in battery technology.

The cars we drive today are a lot cleaner and fuel efficient than they used to be.

The main problem with all the alternatives is cost.

Maybe we are looking in the wrong direction. There are a lot of things that can be done to reduce CO2 emissions without radically changing the cars we drive.

-build intersections with traffic circles or interchanges in order to reduce the time spent idling at traffic lights.
-build transit that actually works moving people with minimal difference in time if a car is used. My main beef with transit is that whenever I tried using it it took at least two busses and a half hour or more waiting in between.
-continue building and developing fuel efficient engines that burn fuel cleanly.

Probably the only practical solution to the present energy crisis is to develop synthetic carbon fuels. Essentially figure out how to shorten the hundreds of thousands of years to naturally produce coal and petroleum.

The Expert answers:

How about good use of kids avoiding chores. You know more than half of chore time is relentless avoidance for lack of industrious, noticeable gratification in the lonliest way. We used to kick the can many years ago when children could play in the street all the way to dark. If you are background checkable, why don’t you start employing our little self starters to sub- contractorship, feed your face with pats on the back, and place an inviting welcome back placement on the neighborhood table for good old fashioned, fear- based, acknowledgement of our not so far off in the future generation promise With your confidence, experience, expertise, and enthusiasm, without regard to what their personal right to personal and family privacy rights are concerned. (If you need to protect yours, as an adult, of course, this does not apply). If you could keep it educational, helpful, and safe, I believe our young people’s minds have already been invented, most difficult to beat, and so desiring a way to feel useful, desired and contributing, in an eco-friendly way or not.

Mark asks…

Eco-Friendly, Cheap, Cars?

I’m getting my first car in two years. I know that it’s early, but I want to find a car that ecofriendly, and cheap enough for a car that your parents would buy. It has to be four door (its a rule) and needs to be reliable, because I will have it through college. I also need to be able to fill up pretty much anywhere. Any suggestions?

The Expert answers:

Bicycle, bicycle.

Ford focus.. Year 2000-2004. They are not very expensive.

Steven asks…

how is hybrid electric security cars eco friendly?

The Expert answers:

They use less gas than conventional cars but what i think is more eco-friendlier than a hybrid car is any car as long as it’s a used car because it is very energy and resource intensive to make a new car especially a hybrid car.

Your Questions About Green Living

Jenny asks…

what are the jobs in demand in the renewable energy sector? are they higher or lower qualification jobs?

Is it lower paid jobs like plumbers etc. in demand, or is it researchers, analysts etc., people with degree’s and higher qualifications?

The Expert answers:

Because people are becoming more aware of the planets energy sources, there is an increasing demand for most jobs in this sector. I would say that the highest demanded job in that sector would be researchers. Depending on what type of research it is, it may not necessarily be required to have a high qualification. Also, because there is a higher demad for jobs in this sector you will find that they are probably less fussy as to what qualification the person has (obviously will probably have to some some sort though).

Paul asks…

When is the renewable energy market going to take off? And how? What jobs?

I want to study a degree in renewable energy, and want to know it’ll be worthwhile.

The Expert answers:

I think it’s underway. I’m not “in the know” but it has been a hot topic for a number of years and people only seem to be getting more serious about it.

George asks…

Are there many jobs in renewable energy? And if so, what are the jobs?

The Expert answers:

Renewable Analyst,
Renewable Engineer
Renewable Scientist

Sandy asks…

How big will the ‘renewable energy’ and ‘sustainability’ sector grow, and how many new jobs will there be?

im interested in studying ‘Green Energy Technology BSc’ course and want to know what my job prospects will be like.

The Expert answers:

Generalists in such a field should also get a communications, mass communications or journalsim minor in addition to a minor related to an applicable field because the renewable energy field is dynamic. You have to keep in mind US Department of Labor and Statistics numbers that indicate for each of those “new” jobs created- two conventional jobs are lost- and those people are going to go somewhere. In the past when predictions were made of what sectors would need people, 3 to 5 years down the road those projections failed to materialize because technology changed.

Now, if you get into electrical engineering, with a focus on power distribution power management or power systems you stand a better chance of finding a job after you get out of college, but no guarantees. A Chem E major might be able to make their job or their own comapny when they get out of school.

Unless you have a strong minor in another applicable field, being a generalist with no other supporting minor fields of study can be bit of a handicap. Having a minor in a communications field and or a supporting field will only help your chances. But you also have to stay abreast of what is happening in the world so you can adapt to those changes.

Susan asks…

What decent jobs can you get with a certificate 4 in renewable energy?

Not istalling or maintaining solar systems, but other things?

The Expert answers:

Although it is difficult to predict the future in these uncertain economic times, there are already many green energy related jobs. Here is a short list:
• Solar Lab Technician
• Solar and PV Installer/Roofer
• Solar Fabrication Technician
• Marketer of Solar Technologies
• Financial Analysts
• Solar Operations Engineer
• Solar Appliances Installer
• Architect (designing solar friendly homes)

Thomas asks…

designing a snack for food tech.?

I’ve got to design a healthy snack for part of my food tech course, it has to be low in fat and salt and high in fibre. And has to contain one or more of the following: a scarce food, a GM food, fair trade food, tractor assured, sustainable food or seasonable fruit. Any one got any ideas? thanks

The Expert answers:

How about a fruit salad pot? Make it into a small plastic pot with a tight lid.

Fruit is low in fat, has no salt and is high in fibre. Choose one that is GM to improve its shape or colour (Strawberries?), one that is imported but has fairtrade label on it eg banana(The Co-op sell a lot of Fairtraid products), British apple eg Cox is a good choice as grown in Uk (maybe even local variety if possible) it’s also seasonal.

Hope this helps

Susan asks…

How do Genetically modified foods promote sustainable development? please help!!?

I searched on the internet but I couldn’t find anything.

The Expert answers:

GMO’s themselves, they’ve been around for oh, a few thousand years, and the genetic modifying by breeding plants, has been going on since the turn of the century. The antagonsit of GMO will say, we don’t know the long term effects. Yes, we don’t but being that in the last 100 years the human life span has increased 40-60 years beyond what it was at the turn of the century i don’t think we have to worry too much about GMO’s. Your body ingest thousands of chemicals daily! The stuff you inhale from your car is far worse than what you eat from a potatoe that has fish genes in it, on a molecular level it doesn’t make a difference, and there is no clear science proving gmo’s to be bad, wait i know someone will argue. Studies have shown GMO’s to do this, that etc, but studies have shown the same results from organics and conventional foods. When it comes down to a cellular level, there is virtually no difference in the digestive process. The main other thing about GMO, without it, we could only feed 1/3 of the population!

Joseph asks…

What is a sustainable yearly wage for an average American family?

For basic necessities only (food, shelter, clothing). In your answer please specify the family size.

What type of government can best provide people the tools to meet those needs?

The Expert answers:

For a family of four, with children sharing the bedroom I would say it breaks down as follows:

Food: $600 per month, depending on locale. $7,200.00
Shelter: $500 per month, again with local variances. $6,000.00
Clothing: About $400 per person each year. $1,600.00

This will total $9200.00. Unfortunately this will barely scratch the surface for most families. I have not included utilities, transportation, school expenses, entertainment, church contributions, taxes or other expenses. I would say the minimum sustainable yearly income for most families this size would be nearer $50,000. Nobody can live on basic necessities only unless they are in a nursing home. (And nursing homes aren’t cheap either.)

It should not be the place of government to provide family necessities. Government should defend our shores, deliver the mail and maintain law and order. Historically, families have prospered when they were given the freedom and the means to provide for themselves. For those unable to provide for themselves, churches are commanded to care for widows and orphans and I would extend this to include all who are incapable of maintaining themselves.

William asks…

Why are dog owners happy to allow irresponsible pet owners to abuse pets?

yet not happy to allow unwanted pets be put down humanely & sold to China as a sustainable food source ?
Would they rather see the Chinese kill dogs inhumanely & miss out on a big market for our unwanted pet just because we can not stand it happening to fluffy ?
You may just save pets in China a miserable fate.

The Expert answers:

It’s a twisted cold harsh world. Nobody cares, i guess you could relate it to the Hollocaust, you see they didnt rescue the people straight away did they? So maybe we all gotta wait , but someone has to make a stand :S I hope they stop torturing them animals, cause that right there is cannabilism, my dogs like family to me. Like i said, some people dont have a heart, youre either raised with a conscience or with out one.

Donna asks…

How many acres are needed for sustainable living?

Imagine a group of 15-40 people living together as a group or tribe in the wilderness. Except for some permaculture and animals kept (such as chickens), most of the food comes from hunting and gathering.
How many acres are really needed, as all hunting and gathering will be on the tribe’s own land?
Very thankful for a reply, and please leave a source or other proof of what you’re saying.

The Expert answers:

I would say about .8 acre per person or more. That is how big my lot is and it’s more than enough for my garden and chickens. If I were hunting, especially for a group, I would guess the total area per person should be about 10 acres.

Thomas asks…

Is Shark Fin soup illegal in Britain?

Is Shark Fin Soup illegal in Britain? (& U.S etc) I really hope it is, but I haven’t managed to find out.
The more I discover about this brutal business, it’s also an environmental issue…the more I think we should take sanctions against China.
We should be doing that already what with the Dog meat trade, but one thing at a time…..

The Expert answers:

First of all to “World’s tallest midget”, the reason why it’s considered a brutal business is that the sharks aren’t killed, shark’s meat in China is not worth much so the the fin is removed while the shark is still alive and then the creature is thrown back into the sea.

Imitation shark’s fin soup is made out of mung bean vermicelli shaped to resemble shark fins.

It is not illegal in Britain but should join the long list of products like Frois Gras which should be.

**I think it looks terrible and can’t imagine how bad it must be for the health of people who live there. It’s really sad to because on a clear day in Beijing the city actually looks nice but you can’t see it most of the time because of the haze.
There seems to be such a big deal made about climate change etc in Australia but if they look at Beijing they’ve got nothing to worry about.**

Carol asks…

What are you willing to give up to stop Global Warming? Driving, meat, having more then 1 child, how much?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took part in a roundtable discussion on environmental issues, and said afterwards that “one of the participants pointed out that it’s rather odd to talk about climate change and what we must do to stop and prevent the ill effects without talking about population and family planning.

CNN’s Jack Cafferty all but endorsed a global version of China’s oppressive one-child policy on Friday’s Situation Room. He repeated the argument of Canadian journalist Diane Francis, that population control is the only way to fight global warming

FUNNY THING HAPPENED ALONG THE WAY TO DOOMS DAY – 20 years ago I wrote a school paper on how the population bomb predictions of the 1960s had been so wrong and doom never happened then they admitted that their dooms day predictions of starvation and economic ruin for our world were so wrong because “they forgot to add in the work of the new population” These same nuts from the 1960s are running around Copenhagen asking that a “China like” one child global policy be put in to save the world from Global Warming. Same crowd new cause same old messed up thinking.

Are you ready whether you believe or not in Global Warming to give up YOUR FREEDOM to REPRODUCE? Don’t believe me google it.

The Expert answers:

Sir, I must tell you from a 16 year old’s perspective, a perspective that looks at his own future and knows that stuff like what you mention is in it. This is not global warming, it comes down to centralized wealth and propaganda from somewhere up top to put fear into our mind that we are in a crisis. They feed of us because we throw billions of dollars at our fears. I believe no one but myself these days, and when I go outside I see beauty in every living thing, I see change occurring when people least expect it, and I know this world can survive whatever we put it through. I’m not one to believe either global warming or that we are in an economic crisis. I am neither a meteorologist nor a wall street stock investor. I’m a 16 year old adolescent who wants the best for everyone around him, and believes that us falling for the tricks that propaganda brings to us will be the ultimatum purpose of death to wisdom and self reliance as we know it. Not a “hole” in the ozone.

William asks…

Famous political activist Dick Gregory currently on hunger strike for 9/11 truth. Was 9/11 an inside job?

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=20979

It was so painful for me as my wife Lil and I watched the events of September 11, 2001 on television. Seeing a plane hit the World Trade Center (WTC) North Tower at 8:46, then a second plane hit the South Tower at 9:02. Shortly, we saw the firefighters and other first responders courageously going into the buildings hoping to extinguish the fires, but it was impossible to foresee what followed.

Then we watched in shock as nearly a dozen people were jumping from the upper floors to their deaths.

We felt profound horror at 9:59 as the South Tower cascaded in freefall into its own footprint, and then 29 minutes later when the North Tower came down in the same impossible freefall way.

The new forensic evidence which is being released today by Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth demonstrates the presence of controlled demolition materiel in the World Trade Center buildings One and Two.

Just one week after September 11, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Christine Todd Whitman declared “I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington DC that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink” and that we “. . . need not be concerned about environmental issues as [we return to [our] homes and workplaces”.

Yet to this day, at least 900 first responders have since died as a result of the effects of toxic “dust” from the buildings and the some 3,000 human remains that enveloped lower Manhattan and which Mayor Rudolph Giuliani declared “We must clear the rubble”. This “rubble” in fact constituted evidence from a massive crime scene, but was hauled away, first to Long Island, and then was eventually placed on barges and shipped to China.

One thing I know is that the official government story of those events, as well as what took place that day at the Pentagon, is just that, a story. This story is not the truth, but far from it.

I was born on October 12, 1932. I am announcing today that I will be consuming only liquids beginning Sunday until my eightieth birthday in 2012 and until the real truth of what truly happened on that day emerges and is publicly known.
Got this from 1,292 architects and engineers for 9/11 truth – http://www.ae911truth.org/

WTC Building #7, a 47-story high-rise not hit by an airplane, exhibited all the characteristics of classic controlled demolition with explosives:
1. Rapid onset of “collapse”
2. Sounds of explosions at ground floor – a second before the building’s destruction
3. Symmetrical “structural failure” — through the path of greatest resistance — at free-fall acceleration
4. Imploded, collapsing completely, and landed in its own footprint
5. Massive volume of expanding pyroclastic dust clouds
6. Expert corroboration from the top European Controlled Demolition professional
7. Fore-knowledge of “collapse” by media, NYPD, FDNY

In the the aftermath of WTC7’s destruction, strong evidence of demolition using incendary devices was discovered:
8. FEMA finds rapid oxidation and intergranular melting on structural steel samples
9. Several tons of molten metal reported by numerous highly-qualified witnesses

Carol asks…

Is it possible to find cleaning products, shampoo, body soap, etc that are both eco friendly and cruelty free?

After becoming vegan it has become important to know how my products are tested and buy only products that are cruelty free. But I have noticed that some cruelty free products are not eco friendly. Is it possible to have both?
After reading Logan’s answer I guess I should have requested that douchebags need not waste his or her time. Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Anything that says “organic” should be good. The brand “Jason” is good. They sell in bulk on Amazon for a cheaper price. For cleaning products, try Seventh Generation. They make cleaning products, paper towels, toilet paper, and other things. You can also try making your own. I do this a lot for cleaning products. Just google what you want to find, like “dish detergent recipe” and make sure the recipe is something you feel you can do and the ingredients won’t harm the environment.

Hope that helps!! 🙂

What has OBAMA done for you not to like him?

The most important thing that OBAMA and his administration has done negatively…. is passing the so-called ECONOMIC RECOVERY PACKAGE, also known as the STIMULUS BILL 787 Billion dollars of taxpayer money filled with all sorts of earmarked “pet projects” to reserve misapproriated huge amounts of money over a period of time for careless spending that doesn’t help the country or the American people. What does it sound like? A scam, you’re right. A method of telling you one thing and doing another, the old switch-a-roo. Filling the cookie jar with hard cold cash and being able to take from it at any time for by politicians unaccountably. We are talking almost a Trillion dollars passed overnight without any argument or question. HOW ABOUT tax breaks, tax cuts, business incentives, to natuarlly boost the economy to have more money in circulation in the people’s pockets???

NEWS FLASH…. the stimulus didn’t work, I could of told you that a long time ago!!!! BECAUSE this is just a small list of where the money is going …..

Billed Credit Card for generations and generations to come… and that’s okay? How fast was the Stimulus Bill passed? And why didn’t anybody in Congress read the bill? Why wasn’t there any media coverage pertaining to the bill? Why isn’t OBAMA (on the campaign trail once again) reviewing how much of a good job the Stimulus Bill has done for the economy? • $2 billion earmark to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero emissions coal power plant in Illinois that the Department of Energy defunded last year because it said the project was inefficient.

• A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.

• $650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program.

• $88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaker (arctic ship).

• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.

• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

• $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees.

• $400 million for the Centers for Disease Control to screen and prevent STD’s.

• $1.4 billion for rural waste disposal programs.

• $125 million for the Washington sewer system.

• $150 million for Smithsonian museum facilities.

• $1 billion for the 2010 Census, which has a projected cost overrun of $3 billion.

• $75 million for “smoking cessation activities.”

• $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges.

• $75 million for salaries of employees at the FBI.

• $25 million for tribal alcohol and substance abuse reduction.

• $500 million for flood reduction projects on the Mississippi River.

• $10 million to inspect canals in urban areas.

• $6 billion to turn federal buildings into “green” buildings.

• $500 million for state and local fire stations.

• $650 million for wildland fire management on forest service lands.

• $1.2 billion for “youth activities,” including youth summer job programs.

• $88 million for renovating the headquarters of the Public Health Service.

• $412 million for CDC buildings and property.

• $500 million for building and repairing National Institutes of Health facilities in Bethesda, Maryland.

• $160 million for “paid volunteers” at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

• $5.5 million for “energy efficiency initiatives” at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.

• $850 million for Amtrak.

• $100 million for reducing the hazard of lead-based paint.

• $75 million to construct a “security training” facility for State Department Security officers when they can be trained at existing facilities of other agencies.

• $110 million to the Farm Service Agency to upgrade computer systems.

• $200 million in funding for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations

Would someone explain to me on a line by line basis how these items stimulate the economy? Funny thing is the SCHIP bill that just passed is funded by tax increases on smokers. But this bill has $75 million for “smoking cessation activities.” So how can we pay for SCHIP if we are going to get smokers to quit?

The Expert answers:

There is no need to go line-by-line.
It is pure pork, plan and simple.
Although some of the items, like the Coast Guard ice-breaker, are good expenditures, they are not able to STIMULATE the economy. Tax incentives to companies who hire additional full time employees, or increase productivity are the ways to go, but

• $412 million for CDC buildings and property

• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.

• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

Are not justified. These items must go.

Whereas, the

• $1.2 billion for “youth activities,” including youth summer job programs.

Does pose a plausible stimulus, by preparing teens for entering the work force.

This is why a line-item-veto or single item legislation must be enacted. And to think Obama promised change. The only change here is what will be left in the tax payer’s wallet when the Dems get done with us.

Sandy asks…

How will you tell YOUR senator to vote?

Obama says we will not survive if this isn’t passed…

I’ve already expressed my views to both my House Reps and Senators. Not only do I disagree with this irreponsible spending, but I feel that the direction taken by this new leader in the last two weeks has demonstrated where he truly intends to lead us – a socialist left New World government who has allegiances to everyone but it’s own citizens. I want Obama impeached.

Maria asks…

What political party do you belong to?

Your Questions About Green Living

Steven asks…

Is lightning the largest and most abundance amount of renewable energy for Earth?

Lightning and thunderstorms occur all around the world. Some areas receive denser volumes of lightning than other parts of the world. From what I know, in the large bodies of ocean, there are usually strong winds and storms that gives off an abundance and nearly constant amount of lightning in the air.

Here is my suggestions and questions:

Construct a large ship with conductive material & technology to withstand and insulate high amounts of heat energy to boil h2o into steam, and then further powering and spinning a turbine to generate electricity off shore back into our power grid with power lines.

Nuclear power plants also contain rods that can withstand high temperatures of heat to generate large amount of electrical energy. Is it possible to divert and spread the enormous heat of lightning onto a piece of conductive material, making it extremely hot to boil water into steam to power a turbine?

Advantages for implications:
A ship is able to move around the bodies of water to capture an optimized amount of lightning.
Using mother nature to produce energy is a clean and renewable method, no risk of nuclear melt down.
A large scale production of ships with platforms that can turn this idea into reality may possibly solve the world‘s energy crisis.

What kind of material can withstand heat damages from lightning strikes? Can franklin’s kite transfer the electric current of lightning from one point or location and out to another point with the use of rods? Since we can already manipulate the climate to produce artificial rain and thunder storms, can we turn this idea into efficient way to generate electricity by following a nuclear power plants model?

I know there are a lot of things to consider like the cost to implement, safety of the ship from disaster and terrorist, and even the amount of lightning strikes that occur. I would like to receive your feedback, especially from scientist who have studied this subject. What are the flaws and problems that arise?
The suns surface temperature is 4600 Celsius.

The temperature of a lightning in mid air is ten times hotter than that. The sunlight is heat that is absorbed and captured over a period of time to consistently turn water into steam.
It is not tiny when the strike of one lightning is ten times hotter than the sun. On top of that, my idea is not to transform the energy of electricity from lightning DC directly into AC into our power grid. Nuclear power plants do not work that way either.

The Expert answers:

No, it is tiny compared to the others. Much easier to use solar panels or solar heat, that is within our technology.

And it is unpredictable and of voltages much too high to harness.

Edit, yes, lightning has a lot of power, but it is for a very brief period of time, and you collection hardware has to be there to collect it.

Bottom line, the amount of energy that you can collect over any area is very small compared to that you can get from sunlight.

Susan asks…

How can a Renewable Resource such as Solar Energy be used to reduce the world’s dependency on Fossil Fuels?

And alleviate the world‘s energy crisis?

The Expert answers:

All renewable energy resources are used by all agencies to reduce the usage of fossil fuels. Cheap and easy available source of energy is solar energy by using photo cells. Most of the government buildings are installed with solar energy generation and usage and also enacted to enforce solar energy usage in dwellings for all purposes such as lighting, cooking, pumping water and so on. This is a great valuable substitute for fossil fuels.

William asks…

What is the best renewable energy?

The world is rapidly changing and our dependence on the earths fossil fuels are diminishing. As we turn to alternative methods of energy, what is proving to be the best renewable power source?. Examples of renewable energy are Tidal Power, Wave Power and Solar Power.

The Expert answers:

Wind while widely promoted is quite inefficient.
Solar is pretty good, especially in equatorial regions.
Speaking from the UK perspective I would promote tidal and wave energy. They are efficient and predictable.

I would also not dismiss nuclear in this debate, although it is not considered truely renewable in the same sense as these others, it is currently undergoing many methodological improvements which would allow the reuse of waste to a much lower level. (also it is the grey area between renewables and non renewables)

all in all i would rate the true renewable as tide, solar, wind in that order.
Then nuclear would outweigh all these but due to misinformation and scare mongering its not being considered the same.

Joseph asks…

1.What energy sources, if any, cannot be traced to sunlight falling on the earth?

2. What are some of the disadvantages that have kept renewable energy sources from supplying more than a small fraction of the world‘s energy?
3. when two objects attract each other electrically, must both of them be charged?
4. When two objects repel each other electrically, must both of them be charged?
5. What reasons might be there for the universal belief among scientists that there are only two kinds of electric charge?

Please help me with this…..i badly needed your help.
If possible please answer all the questions with explanations..
May God bless us all. Happy New Year

The Expert answers:

1. Geothermal energy based on the decay of radioactive isotopes within the core of the earth.
2. The issues are specific to the sources of the renewable energy. There is no general answer to this.
3. Yes.
4. Yes.
5. That is all that has been found, and two charge types are all that are needed for electromagnetic phenomena.

Sharon asks…

help with my renewable energy poster?

I’m making a renewable energy poster, and I want to work on it and finish it this weekend. I already have an idea of how to draw it out, and what goes where, but I would like some help with these areas:

– a simple definition of Clean/Renewable Energy
– why using that type of energy is good
– three facts on wind power, solar power and bio fuel power.

Also, what do you think of my slogan; “Cleaner Energy for a Cleaner World“?

Please go all out in your answers. I’ve done a lot of research into the area, but I can’t seem to condense everything so that it can go onto a poster and not be too overwhelming for the reader…especially since I found out the posters are going to be made into a calendar for 2011. Thanks! 🙂

The Expert answers:

Clean energy – energy whose production doesn’t contribute to pollution or global warming

Renewable energy – energy derived from sources which can be fully replenished indefinitely (for the life of our planet) using environmentally sustainable processes

Why good? – because it provides a sustainable pathway to the future

Wind power – intermittent, highly variable, easily harnessed using high turbines, fully renewable and sustainable, “clean”
Solar power – 50% maximum availability, highly variable, easily harnessed using photovoltaic or thermal collectors, fully renewable and sustainable, “clean”
Bio fuel power – partially renewable but not fully sustainable (may produce net CO2 emissions, may compete with food production), not “clean”

Slogan: For a renewable energy poster, why not “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable World” ?

Robert asks…

is our food production system sustainable?

i have a case study to do and i cant find anything about an argument for our food production system being sustainable. HELP!

The Expert answers:

No, it is not sustainable because, like other economic sectors, agriculture depends very strongly on fossil fuels for energy whether directly or indirectly. Energy from unrenewable fossil fuels is required to power farm machinery and equipment, for transport, food processing, electricity, and making agrochemicals. In other words, almost the entire chain in food production requires energy from fossil fuels.

Increasing world population, increasing demand for biofuels, and changing to a more meat-based diets mean increased pressure for deforestation, pollution, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

Sustainable agriculture practices are now growing in importance and becoming increasingly more mainstream. However, we are still long way to achieving a truly sustainable system worldwide.

Chris asks…

Is Sushi a Sustainable Food?

I am throwing a party for my 13th Birthday and i want to make it as sustainable as possible ,I’m of food first on the list of sustainable things, is Sushi sustainable?

The Expert answers:

Yes. It can be very sustainable. The rice and seaweed(nori) alone are great to start with. Thankfully, there are corporations that are taking responsibility for this earth we are taking from.

Thomas asks…

What is the the best food to eat before a run?

I heard bananas were good are there other foods that are more sustainable?

The Expert answers:

Oatmeal porridge with skim milk, honey and banana slices.
Got complex carbs to ensure sustained release of energy, low in fat so wont stress the digestive system causing cramps, and has a good electrolytic balance.
Banana is the most commom pre run food of atheletes you can almost never go wrong with those.

Ruth asks…

What are some unsustainable food companies?

All of the food companies/brands that I research are going sustainable so I am having a hard time finding ones that aren’t yet.
Thank you Chase! You made some excellent points and I will look up YUM to see what I can find.

The Expert answers:

Don’t confuse large corporations buying up small organic labels and small sustainable companies as “going sustainable”. This is a process of greenwashing their business and a way for them to tap into another market, that is all.
Take for example, Toms of Maine products, used to be small independent company, now owned by Colgate-Palmolive.
There are many companies that are falling to this situation of being bought by larger corporations.
Do a bit of research into YUM! Brand foods and their history, they are not alone in their corporate actions, but it is a good place to start.

Additional:
Rick B. Sustainable practice isn’t about whether or not an animal becomes extinct. It is about whether or not resources are wasted in the production of food. An excellent example of this would be approximately 80% of the antibiotics sold in the US are fed to animals being raised for slaughter. Or another example would be the usage of food crops (corn as an example) being used to feed animals being raised for meat.
This is what is meant by sustainable practice. Unfortunately given the amount of money generated from unsustainable practice, the only real motivator for corporations to embrace sustainability is not because they have suddenly developed ethics (corporations don’t have a habit of that) but more because the public is increasingly demanding it. And corporations? They do what is needed to ensure their profit margins only grow, not shrink.

John asks…

Why do we grow a lot of our food in Califorina?

I mean it NEVER rains here so we take large amounts of water from other places to water the very hot and dry landscape.

Why do it when it’s not sustainable in a place where there is little amounts of water, it doesn’t rain, and it gets really hot???

Wouldn’t it be better to grow more food in America indoors in tall buildings????

The Expert answers:

A lot of the water in Southern California comes from a canal connected to the Colorado River.

Lisa asks…

According to the Dept of Energy, 0bama’s 20 billion spent on “green jobs” has cost $5 million ?

for each permanent job. Do you think we should continue wasting taxpayer money to support an industry that is not ready for such massive taxpayer spending?
Wouldn’t it be better to put some scientists together with a small manufacturing company to work on producing viable energy alternatives, before wasting so much money on companies that are going bankrupt or moving overseas to produce their product once the taxpayers have gotten them started?

The Expert answers:

No, i don’t.

Donna asks…

What will be the most needed jobs in the new eco-economy?

What careers / job skills will be most needed as it becomes clearer every day that we need to find alternative energy sources & a solution to global climate change? As a follow up, what companies today are leading the efforts to accomplish these goals?

The Expert answers:

Dealing with PEOPLE will always be required in any industry.
Dealing with customers OR employees.

Managers of people are always needed. People are people regardless of the industry. There will always be HR departments.

Think about people skills, psychology, and business management. Don’t get locked into ONE industry that you need to rely on. You can fit in ANYWHERE with good people skills.

Robert asks…

“Alternative Energy”?

Why are so many on the right against forms of energy other than oil? They say it will destroy our economy; that makes no sense. Oil may be a cash cow for some but anyone who has studied business knows that the cash cow is the 3rd of 4 stages in a product life cycle. Developing new energy sources is one of the BEST things we can do as Americans. It will develop new industries, new jobs, grow our economy in something other than the “service sector”, grow our own energy independence, wrestle back some of our financial future from China, and help to break the need for us to be jerked around in the middle east. This is all good stuff. Why do so many on the right badmouth alternative energy development? It doesn’t make sense why so many want to stay on the oil teat.

The Expert answers:

I do not think they are against other forms of energy, they just understand that there is no other source as efficient and cheap as oil yet. There is no point in investing in an energy source that few people will actually use because it is so expensive.

George asks…

Will Environmentalism be less of a concern to Americans as environmentally-hazardous jobs get shipped overseas?

Since a lot of the industrial, manufacturing, and mining jobs are being outsourced to places like China and Latin America, doesn’t that mean there’ll be less industrial emissions on American soil?

Also, as fuel efficiency increases and alternativeenergy are poised to enter the market, doesn’t this mean there should be far less carbon produced on US roads and highways?

So do you think environmentalism will become more of a concern for, say, China and Guatemala, than the United States?

The Expert answers:

No, we will just try exporting environmentalism to those counties as well. We care about the environment everywhere

Michael asks…

Which 1 is it???!!! will alternative energy hurt or help the economy and why??!!?

Some say it will help the economy because it creates jobs and indirect monetary interaction by loans and increase activity in local stores and less reliance and spending on foreign fuels. but others say that it will harm the economy long term by displacing the jobs of oil companies, which I guess there is a lot that it connected ( lots of products have ingredients derived from oil). And some other arguments but I forget…. So what will alternative energy REALLY do to the economy?? …..now, I do realize I’m giving off the impression that I am incredibly ignorant about the topic, AND yes, I admit that I don’t have a deep understanding of the topic and I’m trying to correct it right now.

The Expert answers:

It’s not that hard. Alternative energy helps the economy if and when it is economical. In other words, when it is profitable and more efficient that the fossil fuel alternative. And I mean in the absence of subsidies and government intrusion. When alt energy can stand on its own, that’s when it’ll help the economy. Until then, it hurts the economy. Even if it creates jobs. Yes the government can force job creation in one sector if it wants, but at what price? One must realize there is an opportunity cost to distorting markets and making them do something unnatural — what’s not obvious is the other jobs that are destroyed and the economic efficiency lost as a result of the market distortion.

That does not necessarily mean we shouldn’t use alt energy, if we decide there are reasons more important than the economy to do so. But don’t kid yourself that it helps the economy when it doesn’t.

If the economy left to its own free operation wants to import oil or burn coal, that’s because oil and coal are the most economically efficient choices. And that’s pretty much the situation today.

You use the future tense “will”, so I’ll point out that things change over time. Someday as oil becomes more scarce and expensive, and technology improves alternatives, then alternate energy will at some point become the more economical choice, and we’ll all voluntary move to alt energy without any government prodding.

Peyton above is wrong to say that solar and wind have no cost after the initial outlay. People assume that since there is no fossil fuel being consumed. But they have a LOT of cost, which is why they are more expensive than fossil fuels. They use up a lot of land that must be leased, consume a lot of labor, and require unusually long transmission of electricity to get to where people need it, with all the inherent waste. None of those things are free. Also the initial capital outlay is properly depreciated, recognized as a monthly expense over many years — according to universally accepted accounting practices that reflect economic reality. Hence the cost of building a solar plant or wind farm is indeed an ongoing monthly expense spread out over decades. Hardly free. That’s why a coal plant per kilowatt produced is far cheaper, even including the tons of coal consumed everyday. (Coal is amazingly cheap).

What are some ways to make my school eco friendly?

My friend and I are running for co-prez and we want to make our school eco friendly. We already have low-flush toilets and recycling bins. What else? 10 POINT TO BEST ANSWER! Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Recycle bins for sure.

How about some of the following:
Compost pile for ground clippings
Start an organic garden for the cafeteria
Use recycled paper in computer lab
Make sure light bulbs are energy star certified or CFL compatible.
Solar panels to supplement energy usage

One of the biggest issues you’ll face is fundraising to make these happen. School budgets are super tight and don’t have a ton of wiggle room for additional spending. But you could lobby the school board to at least allocate a portion of the next years budget to eco-friendly efforts. Good luck.

What are some ways for home RENTERS to be eco-friendly without making permanent modifications to the house?

I rent a house and want to implement some energy-saving or ecofriendly options in my home life, but I won’t be here long enough to bother the landlord with making permanent modifications.

Also, I’m pretty broke. Anybody have any ideas?

The Expert answers:

The 1st and most important word in the mantra is reduce. Reduce the toxins in your cleaning supplies, using baking soda and vinegar can save you money and they with a little liquid soap can clean almost anything. Reduce the amount of energy you use, opening windows when to let a cool breeze in or opening drapes to let the sunlight in etc. Adjusting your thermostat up a few degrees in the summer and down in the winter can save energy as well. Only washing full loads of laundry or dishes, and wearing clothes that look clean more than once before washing. Reduce waste, buying the right portion so you don’t have food waste, cooking at home and freezing leftovers can reduce food waste as well. I’ve noticed the healthier I eat the less garbage I create. Processed foods have excessive packaging as well as excessive chemicals.

Just think frugal and you are being kinder to the planet. Everything we do, use, buy or consume has an impact, so the less we buy the lower our impact.
