Lisa asks…

what are environmental issues with injection moulding?

just wondering about the environmental issues with injection moulding, doing a project in college, if you could help thanks a lot.

The Expert answers:

You know those gallon jugs that milk comes in at the supermarket? Those are injection molded.

IM is super-popular with plastics. So, basically every environmental issue with plastics, especially bottles, is applicable to injection molding.

Hell, some clever folks figured out how to injection mold glass a couple decades back, and now beer bottles are mega-cheap. The cost incentive to reuse them totally went away, so now they’re basically disposable; time was you paid a deposit on a beer bottle, and the company bought it back, steamed it sterile, and put more beer in it.

Donald asks…

Do men and women view environmental issues differently?

Do men and women act in different ways in the natural environment? Do men and women view environmental issues differently?

Why do you think this is?

Are there any Ecofeminists in the Environment Section?
This is not homework Lol, it is years since I left school, I am interested in your views.
Brief Definition

Ecofeminism is the social movement that regards the oppression of women and nature as interconnected. It is one of the few movements and analyses that actually connects two movements. More recently, ecofeminist theorists have extended their analyses to consider the interconnections between sexism, the domination of nature (including animals), and also racism and social inequalities. Consequently it is now better understood as a movement working against the interconnected oppressions of gender, race, class and nature.

The Expert answers:

I don’t think the difference is any more distinct then the way that men and women think differently in general because of the way our brains are desinged…

THAT is a great topic to do research on…

The gender differences in how the brain works.

Mark asks…

When voting for a candidate, how much importance do you place on his/her stances on environmental issues?

Do you consider their stance (or lack of stance) on the environment to be:

A) Very important
B) Of some importance
C) Not that important
D) Not at all important
E) Other (please explain)

Also, what is your stance on environmental issues? Important or not so much? Why?

The Expert answers:

A.

My stance is that environmental is just as important as any other issue – economy, civil rights, abortion, etc. Why? – because the environment is the foundation of who we are and our ability to survive as a species.

Nancy asks…

Conclusion of a project on environmental issues of Brazil?

I made a powerpoint presentation on the environmental issues of Brazil ( deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest). I am not able to make a conclusion ( only 1 slide for conclusion). Can someone please help.

I included

causes
consequences
government steps
what government should do to resolve the issue

and then i need a conclusion

The Expert answers:

A nice, strong conclusion is a great way to end a presentation — it leaves a strong imprint in the minds of your audience. I would talk about the importance of preserving forests (particularly in the Amazon), and make some predictions about the future; what the future might be like if the Amazon ceased to exist.

You could probably use 1-3 lines to write a brief sentence to summarize the Amazon’s importance, and another line or two to state your belief on what should be done about it (depending on your font size).

Hope this helped!

David asks…

what are some social, economical, and environmental issues of global warming?

basically i have to write something for science the question is ‘Is human activity responsible for global warming’ i need to write about socia, economical and environmental issues. help anyone?

The Expert answers:

Economic: Our generation gets the benefit of cheap energy from burning a huge fraction of the world’s fossil fuel capital. The next 50 generations pay the costs of lower crop yields, increased disease, flooding of coastal cities, more extreme weather, etc. Due to the climate change caused by burning that fossil fuel. Not because our generation consciously and explicitly decided to take for ourselves and let future generations fend for themselves, but for still less respectable reasons, not the least of which being because an entire political party within the country of the world’s greatest economy has made a conscious and colossally amoral decision to incessantly and blatantly lie about basic science.

U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 2010:
http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=12782&page=1
“Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems.”
http://nationalacademies.org/morenews/20100716.html
“Choices made now about carbon dioxide emissions reductions will affect climate change impacts experienced not just over the next few decades but also in coming centuries and millennia…Because CO2 in the atmosphere is long lived, it can effectively lock the Earth and future generations into a range of impacts, some of which could become very severe.”

Your Questions About Green Living

Susan asks…

Going green with the DH and kids?

Living in a house with 4 young kids, my husband and I always try and set the right example for our young ones. This year, our kids being aged 8, down to 3, we decided to make some family resolutions, or goals if you will. We decided this weekend, since it will be bad weather to go anywhere, to take a few hours out of Saturday or Sunday and sort through everyones clothes, shoes and toys. Everything that is in good shape but will not be used in our house anymore for whatever reason will be given to the Salvation Army. We also decided to support a child from World Vision for $35.00 a month. And finally, we have decided to GO GREEN! I would like to start using ecofriendly cleaning products, and buying more organic foods. Of course we can’t be sure that anything these days is 100% organic but I figure I’m better off buying what they claim to be as ‘organic’ then what is sprayed with preservatives and various other chemicals. My question to you is, what kind of ecofriendly cleaning products should I use. Also, are their any other ideas/tips to share regarding the whole ‘going green’ theme with young children?

Much appreciated, happy new year!

The Expert answers:

Sounds like you are on the right track.
Rather than focusing on organic foods, I suggest you start with as many local foods as possible.
As for cleaning products, I think that would be a great thing for you and your kids to search online – there are lots of sites devoted to this.

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=xwl&q=old+fashioned+cleaning+products&btnG=Search&meta=

You could have great family time making up some of the recipes.

And tons of other resources (Google is our friend….)

Earth Day’s Tomorrow, Need Some Help :/?

Okay, Tomorrow’s Earth Day & I neeeedd some help!
I have a shirt picked out “Earth Day Every Day” (white & Green), Pair of Blue Jeans, Brown Shoes, how should I wear my hair? I want it to look Mother-Nature-y? & How can I make some ecofriendly stuff to wear? Maybe a bracelet er something like that ; out of stuff that’s probably already at my house though…Whoever comes the most ecofriendly to school gets extra credit on a Science Test, & considering I’m failing, I need all the help I could get.
Please? 😀

The Expert answers:

Well, the first thing I believe you should do is the work and homework in the class 🙂 Also, you can model your hair like Whitney Port, where you take a clump of hair near your temples and can either braid them back and tie them with an elastic or twist them back. As far as braclets go, your best bet is braiding Earth tone colored yarn.

Michael asks…

Girls: What types of clothing do ya’ll like?

I make clothes all the time, and lately, we’ve been needing extra money. Everybody always compliments me on everything I make, so I wanted to know how to run a business. It will be out of my home, and I will get a website instead of a store, but I need every possible tip I can get from anybody on how to run a business. Like, how do I get it known without spend like $7million for advertising; What kind of software can I get for it, that inexpensive; where to buy cheap fabrics, sewing machines, beads, ribbon, lace, etc.; What type of things I need to run the business; & anything else that would help. Remember, I’m fourteen, so I can’t get a store, unless someone paid for it (not gonna happen) and I’m pretty sure the government wont lend me money at my age.
Things in the store: Dresses, shirts, shots/pants, purses, shoes, jewelry, hair accessories, misc, & notebooks and other things similar to it.

Also say what shapes you like, dresses, colors, textures, anything that will help me improve my designs!
I would also like to know a place to buy cheap forms and possibly mannequins.
Also, places where I can get a cheap website that looks professional and easy to maintain that has only my website name then .com (not places like my website.bluevoda.com oe whatever).

Once again, ANY help is needed.
Thank you to everyone who helps!

Oh, and I want to stay eco friendly!
So, could ya’ll maybe list things for advertising that include online too?
& if anybody can find cheap places online to buy eco friendly supplies also?

The Expert answers:

My library has a bulletin board were people put up fliers and such, I don’t know if that would really count as GOOD advertising, but, it’s a start, right? Hehe.

I can’t really tell you were to get all that stuff, but my grandma could probably tell you! XD. I do know that I like fun prints, hearts, colors, and cute animals. I would also suggest bows. ‘Cause are well…cute. ;D

Good luck and I hope I helped!

Nancy asks…

Where can I buy Eco friendly/ natural shoe out-soles?

Linda asks…

Where can I find an online source for building a cabin and powering it with alternative energy?

Looking to build a cabin in the middle of nowhere in the ozarks. Wish to do this with my family and friends and ultimately power it with alternative energy.

The Expert answers:

Try this site for most of the alternate power sources you can use.

This is just a fun site, I threw in for decor and more 🙂
http://www.offgridappliances.com/misc/cabin-rv-resources-2.htm

Joseph asks…

Which Engineering degree should I major in for alternative energy?

I have always been interested in alternative energy, so I am wondering which discipline of engineering I should major in. I am thinking nuclear engineering, but that is only one type. Which type deals with solar, wind, hydroelectric, etc. power?

The Expert answers:

Besides nuclear engineering, any energy form will benefit from a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering. The specialization of aeronautical engineering might be specifically applicable to wind power where materials engineering might be helpful to find that new solar cell technology or that nifty new way to store hydrogen in bulk form without ridiculously high pressures or cryogenic temperatures. However, don’t be fooled, solar and wind power will never be anything other than niche technologies. They simply cannot be relied upon for full time power when they only work on average 25% of the time. Anytime you make your career such a tiny niche like that, you risk becoming obsolete and unemployed.

Lizzie asks…

Idea for my school project on alternative energy?

I need to come up with a plan using alternative energy to reduce the emission of CO2, NO and SO2. Anyone have any ideas? Solar, geothermal, biomass, and wind are some ideas…. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

I would lean toward solar energy, because there are so many uses for it.

It’s clean and cheap (or free) and in some places, if you produce more solar power than you need, you can sell the excess back to the power company!

Passive solar heating
Solar panels (photovoltaic) – “Active” solar heating
Solar Hot Water Heaters
Solar cookers
Solar lighting

The solar idea is already gaining popularity in 3rd world countries where people cannot access electricity the “standard” way.

Hope this helps!

Charles asks…

what alternative energy sources can i use to power my house?

2) do you think the general american public cares about finding alternative energy sources?

The Expert answers:

Solar power

Mandy asks…

What is a simple alternative energy source idea that has not yet been invented?

I have to come up with some sort of alternative energy source that has not yet been invented. It can be ridiculous and unrealistic. My classmate did a water powered hair straightener.. she said there is a dam running inside of it. We basically just have to come up with the idea and explain how it would work. Ideas please?

Your Questions About Green Living

Donna asks…

Would it not be more effective to eliminate carbon tax and cap trades and use the capital for innovation?

The carbon trade doesn’t make a dramatic impact on cutting carbon emissions in my opinion. I think we need to slowly drive up the cost of using fossil fuels through taxes. Then instead of letting a company sell of carbon credit to another company, essentially causing the same aggregate quantity of pollution companies should use that capital to make their business and surrounding environment more green. I feel that amount of capital use to buy products and invested in green energy companies can be utilized to foster innovation to assist in gravitating our nation and economy to a more green, carbon free, and less pollution direction. I understand the initials cost would be extremely high but innovation and investments now would slowly cripple the costs. Portugal produces 45% of their energy from renewable energy provided the Portugese paid twice as much for electricity for the last 5 years.

The Expert answers:

In a perfect world, here is how cap and trade should work:
1) The cap limits the amount of GHGs an entity can emit.
2) Entities that can’t meet the cap will need to buy carbon credits to make up the difference.
3) Entities that come in under their cap receive credits and can sell them on the market.
4) The market sets the price for the credits based on supply and demand.
5) Entities can be awarded credits for various things, like planting quantities of trees.
6) Entities research ways to cut emissions and combat climate change because they can earn carbon credits or negate the need to purchase carbon credits.
7) Prices for energy stay in check because the producers that come in under the cap can undersell those that can’t come in under the cap.

The problem that I have with cap and trade is that the commodities market (where carbon credits would be bought and sold) is broken. Supply and demand doesn’t function well and prices of commodities can be influenced not by the commodities themselves, but by the trading of futures and the whims of the traders.

Fixing the commodities and futures trading markets would eliminate any misgivings I have towards the cap and trade solution…

Joseph asks…

If my political party were real, would you support it?

Pretend I am running for president, would you vote for me? Why or why not? I’d peg myself as a social liberal and a right leaning economic moderate. I just want to get a feel for people’s positions on things and how my own views compare to others. Questions/Comments welcome.

Social positions:
-Take government out of marriage entirely, treat all legal unions as civil unions. If you want to go to a church and get married, do it and leave government out of it.
-Allow law-abiding citizens to bear arms, but reinstate the federal assault weapons ban
-Support a women’s right to choose and have easy access to birth control
-Legalization of all soft drugs; treat drug addiction as a medical problem, not a criminal one
-Outlaw the death penalty (not because of a moral opposition to it, but because the current system is broken and discriminatory)
-Increase border security and crack down on companies hiring illegal immigrants, but allow a path to citizenship
-Have a minimum social safety net (universal healthcare and social security)
-(Unsure) Mandate some type of volunteer, military, or foreign service after completion of high school for all citizens to promote civic involvement and national pride, using Germany, Switzerland, or Israel as a model.

Economic positions:
-Allow the government to go into debt during times of recession, but require a balanced budget otherwise.
-Strive to remove all trade tariffs and promote free trade
-Increase the capital gains tax and make income taxes more progressive to decrease the wealth gap (the largest since right before the great depression) and stop the increasing concentration of wealth at the very top
-Decrease corporate taxes to bring them in line with other developed countries and eliminate tax loopholes
-End all corporate subsidies (oil, farm, etc)
-End all alternative energy subsidies and enact a cap and trade or carbon tax to decrease carbon dioxide emissions. The market will decide what technology to adopt rather than the government pushing certain ones, like ethanol.

Foreign Policy:
-Remove all troops from Saudi Arabia immediately, and from the middle east entirely as soon as possible (Extremist Muslims probably would not hate us as much if we removed our troops from their holy land and stopped propping up a repressive dictatorship).
-Suspend all military aid to foreign countries (Yes, this includes Israel, they can take care of themselves).
-Strive for a two state solution for the Arab-Israeli conflict, with Jerusalem as a shared capital.
-Decrease or maintain current funding levels for the US Military. It should not be immune from the current cost-cutting measures and debates.

Current Events/Misc:
-Increase the debt ceiling as soon as possible to avoid default and maintain our credit rating. Decrease social security and medicare benefits and possibly increase the retirement age to deal with the deficit in the future. Leave discretionary spending near current levels for the foreseeable future.
-Increase funding for manned NASA missions to the Moon and Mars (The return on the space program far outweighs the cost).
-Increase investment in high speed rail for intercity travel over medium/short distances, not the whole country
-Fund/allow embryonic stem-cell research
-Increase NSF/scientific funding
-Promote nuclear power as a interim power source while moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy
-Make election day a national holiday

The Expert answers:

90% supportive

The capital gains taxes, NASA, high speed rail nobody will ride (we aren’t Europe or Japan) we have vast stretches between the places people want to travel between, require examination.

James asks…

Will you support Barack Obama for he is for environment?

Barack Obama is all for renewable energy.
http://obama.senate.gov/press/070319-obama_works_to/

Legislation proposed by U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to provide a federal tax credit to build E85 ethanol fueling stations across the country passed out of conference committee Wednesday.
http://obama.senate.gov/news/050728-tax_credit_for_e85_fuel_in_ene/

I am high school physics teacher I a make only $33,275 a year. I cannot afford to pay $4.12 for gas and I want cheaper gas. The gas used to be 1.29 five years ago,

and corn was was only $2 per bushel one year ago, and now corn is $7 and prices of chicken and beef and bread soared. My students underperfom in the class because their parents cannot affrod to by them breakfast.

The Expert answers:

Surely Barack would be the best for reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Since gas is way out of hand and the oil execs are pocketing billions with a B, personally, I’d say something has to change.

Richard asks…

Will Obama’s stimulus proposal help the economy or make it worse?

Business break for losses: Obama is considering a tax break for businesses that book losses in 2008 and 2009.

Job creation: Obama would establish a new credit for businesses that either create jobs in the United States or or avoid layoffs.

Middle-class tax cut: Obama would offer a tax cut equal to $500 a year for individuals and $1,000 for couples.

Small business write-off: Obama would increase the amount of expenses small businesses can write off to $250,000 in 2009 and 2010, up from $125,000 currently.

Additionally: double renewable energy production and make public buildings more energy efficient; rebuild crumbling roads, bridges and schools; computerize the health care system; and modernize classrooms, labs and libraries.

Will this help soften the recession, eliminate it, or make it worse

The Expert answers:

It will probably reduce the timespan of the recession, and it will help to lay a foundation for a stronger recovery.

David asks…

option on my plan to save America?

all poiticians do is debate and try to stab each other in the back without getting anything done. here is a list i assemled that i think covers what this country needs to do to get back on the right track. please take a little time to comment on how it could be changed and what party it (or pieces of it) are most like.

•Cut down on the deficit; create a budget with no more than 100bil in debt in 25 years. oDo not increase taxes but decrease loopholes
oCut spending on wasteful projects
•Cut back on government agencies either by consolidation or elimination.
•Create laws or a separate agency/entity that removes pork from bills
oCreate government “watchdog” campaign composed of members from all parties
•Stop all tax breaks for US companies that have ½ or more of either personnel or assets overseas.
•Invest in America’s future by providing subsidies to clean and renewable energy, this decreases our spending on foreign oil
•Legalize hemp. The production will have many uses commercially and all products can be taxed to further reduce the deficit
•Create more jobs by repairing roads and revamping transportation systems.
•Create more positions to monitor energy such as well inspectors to keep environmental tragedies to a minimum
•Limit our stake in international wars.
oStop promoting dictators that are “US friendly”
•Create more regulation on “big companies” such as large banks and multibillion dollar corporations to keep them honest
•Restrict credit card companies from high interest rates.
•Reworking or replacement of No Child Left Behind
•Rework the immigration laws to more forcibly enforce no illegal immigrants but make the process of becoming a legal immigrant easier.
•Raise the retirement age to 68 or 70 and repay the “borrowed” money from the fund with some budget < 50 years.
•Decrease (not elimination!) spending on low yield science applications such as NASA
•Decrease imports from countries such as china
•Increase exports and create beneficial trade agreements such as with South Korea
these are kinda like "planks" that i think should be goals for the govenment, not all are easy but i think that they will be the easiest in the long run. the tax system we have now would work and even decrease the deficit if it were all enforced. many companies are able to get outrageous governemt subsidies to offset taxes or hire lawyers to find loopholes. if we made them pay the full rate of thier taxes it would make a considerable dent.

to my knowledge no company taxes exports, just imports. and because of our trade agreements, (such as Nafta) we cant even impose those. china, our main importer (and our main loan source) would not be too keen if we were to put a tarif on thier goods so just decreasing what we buy from them is the only solution.

sustainable development?

what is it ? thanks 10 easy points xx

The Expert answers:

Hey me again haha…..

Sustainable developement is quite self-explanitory. It literally means any sort of developement that is sustainable. Sustainable means it wont run it. For example if a paper company replants two trees for each one they destroy then it is sustainable development because they are giving back what they have taken.

Hope this helps x

Mark asks…

Please help a lost and confused mom who doesn’t know what degree to study for.?

This question has consumed me since I graduated high school. I attended college for one year and quit due to personal issues but everyone (family, friends) wanted me to become a teacher and I was going to pursue it until I realized that didn’t have a passion for it, nor the patience. I’ve taken so many career/personalty tests they all say the same things, im a mixture of artistic, creative, entrepreneurial, social but like to work in solo projects due to the fact that i cant concentrate with others around me. I really don’t think I have any special talents, I’m not good at drawing, don’t do pottery, acting, cause we don’t have those where I live. I’m not very good at math and science and other things like that I was at one point use to get A’s in those classes. I like to read only novels not anything else and I enjoy writing but my stories seem so stupid so I always end up deleting them.

All the jobs that come up in those test are always the same, architecture, landscape architecture, film director/producer, photography, screenplay writer/writer, fashion, acting, interior design, business etc… What’s funny is I do have an interest in every subject architecture/landscape I’m always thinking of buildings and homes the way I would build them and design them eco friendly and I’m not a huge environmentalist but I do what to do my part! Film/producer Whenever I read, listen to music and write my stories I see the images in my head and they flow easily that’s why I enjoy reading its like watching your personal movie like with real character’s or CG animation, how they move and look everything. Photography I don’t own a camera the reason i cant afford the 800 dollar camera i would like but whenever I’m out and I see this perfect shot my hands instantly go into a box formation the perfect size for that shot I would take. Writing I explained earlier. Fashion there not drawn well but I do have a sketch book and not runway no way just like for a small store where I can sell my own designs. Acting I would like to do it just for fun to see if I’m any good at it, my school was small and didn’t have a drama/theater class. Interior design whenever friends move they always call and ask to help them, and not to empty boxes like example my room and daughters room I designed chinese/ mexican feel to it with the designs on my wall and my daughters is triangles and butterflies it took FOREVER TO PAINT but when it was finished everyone loved it. They ask for help on paint, how to put there furniture etc and they tell me that I would be good as a interior designer but I don’t see anything I do as special just helping out a friend. Business I always think of ideas and sorts of detail and the people I tell say there good but its ludicrous they don’t exist I would have to create programs and everything to make them work and it seems in possible.

I’m just so lost now that I’m stressing badly now that question I can’t seem to answer nags at me. People say take it one step at a time. I’m 22 who lives at mommies house because im a single mother and I know what some of you are thinking but we were together for 3 yrs and after 7 months of pregnancy with 1st child he took off, I work in a casino as a janitor no matter how hard I try I get yelled at by customers who aren’t happy, my supervisor says not to take it personally but its hard not to. I live in a tourism town so there’s only casino’s and golfing I don’t handle working under the hot sun very well so I stay where I am the bosses say you better do your job up to code and with a smiling face because we can replace you if you don’t! Its true the economy is bad and people will work any jobs and they fire and hire new people like nothing I’ve seen it. At the moment I’m back in school studying generals. Any advice or helpful suggestions would be really appreciated!!!!

like to paint my table and bookcase!! help??????

http://kin.naver.com/detail/detail.php?d1id=5&dir_id=514&eid=/0wkng35zKoNFGjP/Q5KmHktY07O7aLF

these are pics of my 2 bookcase 3 table, 1 bed table, 1 desk
what can i do to make these looking pretty next my new beige color couch?
i heard that to paint the furnitures you have to use nontoxic eco friendly paint? please help me with details!!!!
which color will look best with the beige and tools, recomened stuff like paint? and where could i get them… and a step by step instruction..
help me please!!

The Expert answers:

Any color looks superb with beige. Take the furniture to be painted to a car auto body shop and ask them to spray paint them. Many car shops will refuse — but if you do find a shop that will agree to this, you must tape off the handles and things like that by yourself first. They will not do that part for you. I suggest this because it’s faster and less hassle. When the job is dry they will expect you to retrieve your furniture immediately so they can have their floor space back.

Lisa asks…

Environmental/Green Websites?

Can anyone suggest some environmental or green websites for the UK?

I’ve just come across http://www.greenfinder.co.uk it’s a great resource for any eco-minded people in the UK. It puts you in touch with loads of different environmentally friendly products, services and companies across the country.

About time too!

http://www.greenfinder.co.uk

Also, http://www.usefulgarbage.com is another great environmental site which puts people who want to get rid of stuff with people who want to get hold of stuff. What a great way to reduce, reuse and recycle household goods. I’ve just had a lovely lady come and pick up some furniture I no longer needed.

Saved me a trip to the dump and saved a bit of space in a UK landfill!

The Expert answers:

Can’t suggest any myself, but thanks for the tip on the greenfinder site.

I used it to find an organic restaurant for my sister’s birthday lunch!

Also, checking out usefulgarbage.com – great site for students needing to pick up or dump term-time furniture.

Your Questions About Green Living

David asks…

A question for swing state and undecided voters?

How will you make your decision for US President?

Suggestions:
-Filter out the gutter rhetoric and lies from both sides.
-Choose who you think is best able to calm and correct the economic crisis.
-Choose who you think will deal most effectively on a global scale.
-Choose who you think is more capable of rebuilding our national image and stature in the world.
-Choose who will work harder to assure our personal freedoms.
-Choose who will be most effective at maintaining our national security both domestically and militarily.
-Choose who is more dedicated to the ecological and environmental issues the world faces.
Best of luck.

The Expert answers:

Sounds like Obama to me! 🙂

Also, another piece of advice… Don’t let single emotional issues, to which there is no governmental solution, affect your judgement regarding foreign policy, war, economics, safety and well-being of our citizens as a whole.

Mark asks…

We’ve got ISSUES in our lives…?

Whats are the biggest Governmental, Social, political (and/or) Environmental issuses facing us today in the US? State your argument and if u r for the affirmative or against it… I need to get back on track with the rest of the world so I thought this may help. Thanks to everyone who replied…

The Expert answers:

We need to eliminate the need to have candidates receive contributions from special interest groups to get elected. The candidates need to depend on our vote and not money from the various business sectors. One of the reasons we are in the trouble we are in today is the lobbying by the mortgage industry. What about the changes in bankruptcy law? If you are stuck with a bad student loan, you owe your soul to the company store. I wonder who was for that change?

Susan asks…

SUV’s SUCK? Don’t they?

They SUCK Gas, they SUCK in general…as do Hummers…if you do drive a Hummer are you overcompensating for something small?

Do you believe that in these times, when environmental issues have an effect on us all, when a large protion of the violence in the Middle East is a result of our fight to obtain as much oil as possible, when these bigger vehicles are responsible for guzzling more gas and causing double the amount of road accidents since their inception than any other vehichle, even four door sedans, that driving an SUV, especially a Hummer, is political, socially, and personally irresponsible?
Seeing Clearly? That’s a laughable screename if there ever was one. You see so clear that you can’t even answer my question. This is not a partisan question. The environment and public health is EVERYONE’s issue. But, as I can see from a lot of your answers, you do not care about others, Well, other than immigration reform..I wonder if that was a concern to you BEFORE the Bush administration used as a devisive tool to rally support from it’s base?

The Expert answers:

I agree! Buy prius’ and hybrids!

Robert asks…

Is it fair to say BP caused the worst environmental disaster?

Is not every single person who participates in the oil-based economy (that would be all of us) also responsible?

Who allowed off-shore drilling? Are not the consumers whose govenments agreed to allow off-shore drilling responsible?

What oversight is there on the off-shore rigs? Did OSHA send out safety inspectors? Or did American people and others say, please go ahead and drill in the ocean for oil and make sure you get it to us at as cheap of a price as possible?

How to look at this issue of responsibility fairly to all involved? What is Muslim view?

The Expert answers:

With reference to BP , do you know how much pollution the US puts into the sky each week ? That was one reason the USA refused to sign up for anti pollution agreements.

Iraq is covered in depleted Uranium from armour piercing shells from US tanks [and British] , this is causing high rates of deformity and cancers in new born babies. Far more worrying than oil.

The USA refuses to sign the Kyoto Protocol. [virtually on its own]

Linda asks…

environment questions (outside US)?

i need to ask someone who has lived or is living in a country outside of the USA these 14 questions for a class and don’t have anyone to ask. hope someone can help 🙂

1. What country did you live in and for how long?

2. Does your country have a natural resource agency and an
environmental protection agency? Do these agencies have
rigorous environmental policies?

3. What are the key environmental issues in your country?

4. How do these issues affect your country?

5. Were you affected as an individual by environmental issues?

6. What is being done to solve these environmental issues?

7. What factors have interfered with solving these issues?

8. Is population growth a key concern in your country? Explain.

9. Does your country have a recycling program?

10. What is the status of air and water quality in your country?

11. What is the status of forest and wildlife resources in your country?

12. Is mismanagement of soil a concern in your country? Explain?

13. What is the status of energy resources in your country?

14. Does global warming pose any potential threat to your country?

The Expert answers:

1. I was born in Canada, have lived in many different places and I deal with the environmental regulations in many different countries because of the equipment I build.

2. Canada has a Federal Ministry of the Environment, plus eight or ten Provincial Environment ministries. Our guidelines are built around the USA EPA but specific places, like the Tar Sands, get specific rules for water, soil and air quality.

3. Water quality, air quality. These are the key environmental issues in Canada right now.

4. It’s not so much the ‘issues’ as the government regulations which determine what kind of process plant can be built, how much industrial development is allowed in an area, how big a refinery can be, and all those things slow down economic growth. It is a fine line between environmentally responsible government and a government which kills its economy while trying to reduce pollution through taxation and micromanagement of development.

5. It’s part of my job but everyone is affected in some way by the environment and our governments policies and rules.

6. Canada is actually going backwards. We no longer hope to meet our Kyoto Accord goals and it is fair to ask just how far we will slump when dealing with forestry, hydrocarbon resources and mining. Money talks, greenpeace walks.

7. Money is the primary factor; money from other countries is the worst because in order to attract outside investment in Canadian resources, our government makes horrible concessions.

8. Population in Canada is an issue only because there are so few people and such a vast area across which to travel, ship goods and communicate.

9. Canada has a great re-cycle program in its’ major cities but nothing in rural areas, and we have a lot of rural areas.

10. Our ‘environment’ is broken up into zones that are based on geographic area and population density. Overall Canada has good water and clear air however specific zones (Ft. Mc Murray, Sarina) are very bad off.

11. Western forests are threatened by insects that are becoming more of a threat as the climate warms. Forests across the country are becoming dryer and there are many more fires. New species of flora and fauna are moving into Canada from the USA because of climate change and this is hard on our indigenous species.

12. Soil management has been an issue since the 1920’s when our prairies were turned to dust and all the top soil blew away. Now there are excellent land use guidelines which prevent soil degradation and loss, however nothing really deals with run-off of nitrogen and chemical laden water into our streams and lakes.

13. We have more energy than we have demand so much of our energy resources are exported to the USA, China, Japan, Europe, etc. See answers to 6. & 7.

14. What threatens Canada also threatens Russia, Europe and China because we all have similar weather patterns. Right now the Arctic is warming up faster than Toronto or Montreal and this leads to melting permafrost which releases methane and CO2 into the atmosphere. Because many towns and small cities in Canada are built on permafrost, buildings are collapsing and traditional hunting and fishing lands are disappearing into the ocean. Most of the answers given here have something to do with global warming.

Your Questions About Green Living

William asks…

How do I find organic and sustainable suppliers in the Cincinnati area?

In particular, I’d like to find a caterer that uses organic and/or sustainably-supplied foods. Does anyone know of a company or restaurant, or have tips on how to find one? Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Http://www.oeffa.org has a few people listed in the Cincy area but where you will find a wealth of information and contacts is the Cincinnati Locavore group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CinciLocavore/. This is a very active and growing group of local eaters, farmers, restaurants and other people interested in eating/living locally in SW Ohio. They have a large data base of organic/local businesses and farms on this website.

Steven asks…

What would be the best way to solve world hunger (in a sustainable way)?

I mean, not just “send loadsa food over there lol”, but ways that will reduce dependency on others for food and serious points.

The Expert answers:

Criminy, what’s gonna be your next easy question—“best way to world peace?”

We’re going to need projects that work in lo-technology ways (that don’t depend on a lot of fancy chemicals or machinery), that are tough to subvert (i.e., steal/hijack/corrupt), that can be self-sustaining (appropriate to the local environment), and that DON’T completely throw local economies/customs into chaos. (If everyone in the village is growing tomatoes, they’re not gonna be a great cash crop….)

For a simple beginning, I agree with the poster who recommended the Heifer Project. Getting a chance for a good animal that’s appropriate for the area (and passing along the offspring to another poor family) can make a small dent in the problem. We gotta start somewhere….

Sandy asks…

how does buying organic foods help the environment and more sustainable?

The Expert answers:

It doesn’t.

Betty asks…

IDEA: Would you use a company that can deliver picnic food &supplies to location of your?

How many people even go on picnics now a days? I know that I hate having to get everything put together and arguing with family members or worrying about whether a friend will remember to bring supplies with them. But would someone be more inclined to have more picnics if they knew there was such a business that was affordable sustainable and would deliver all the supplies needed to you. I’m thinking like a beach /park location. Or if anyone as any suggestions please let me know…

The Expert answers:

If you live in a place where it is scenic enough for people to want to spend their time outside, it is a great idea. Even in winter, cross country skiers need to eat. We used to offer the use of a picnic basket and sell the makings of a picnic near the shores of the Mississippi River. We kept a driver’s license for the loan of the basket and charged for the food. You could also get a deposit for the loan of the equipment.

George asks…

what’s the fastest way to gain sustainable muscle mass via diet and exercise?

want to know the best foods (or suplements) to eat to gain size in my upper body.

The Expert answers:

The first step is eating 5 or 6 smaller meals per day. Try to eat foods high in carbs and protein (peanut butter, sandwiches, eggs, and yogurt). Next is having a solid weight training program. Finally if you have the first two in place supplements will enhance your gains. Start off with a good multi-vitamin (commonly neglected), a good weightgainer protein (prolab n-large II), a solid creatine product, and a good glutamine. For all of these supplements look around for the best values, you don’t necessarily need big brand names. Find value products that work (look in bodybuilding forums).

Hi everything. I’m doing my GCSE Textiles coursework, and I’m desperately trying to find fashion designers who normally/always use ecofriendly materials in their garments for CHILDREN. It really has to be for children, not for adults! Any gender, but I’d prefer to have a female based designer.

I really care about the Earth and wants some ways to help the planet.

And, I know, wrong category.
Thanks for all your ideas!

First, the item is hand made and painted.
Second, it’s pre-owned
Third, the ship using alreadu used packaging.

Farm polutants seeping into the ground and/or running off into the river and lake systems. You can include industry and other human activities such as driving automobiles, disposing waste into landfills and lumber harvesting.

If you put your brain to it I’m sure there’s a few more along those lines.
