Your Questions About Green Living

Lizzie asks…

need help on a relgious question?

In the ancient goddess traditions, the Earth was seen as the body of the goddess and as such the Earth was considered sacred. Nature was seen as a living, spiritual force, which is often not the case in the major religious traditions. Do you think that the lack of a feminine aspect to God has helped lead us to our current environmental crisis? Do you think that re-introducing a feminine aspect to religion might help in solving some of the environmental issues we are facing?

The Expert answers:

When one has a religious question, one asks in the religion forum, not the royalty forum, since, you know…not related.

Susan asks…

By supporting illegal immigrants, are you encouraging more to come into the country?

As liberal as I am on other issues, I find it unbelievable that the US supports illegal immigrants the way they do, especially with regard to birthright citizenship and education.

By supporting illegal immigrants and opening borders are you going to encourage a ton more to come in to the country? What kinds of social, ecomomic and environmental impacts will this have?

Why doesn’t the US do more to improve the situation in the offending countries, rather than just supporting them here?

The Expert answers:

I’m not sure how much more America could encourage illegal immigrants…
They already know that they can get better jobs here than in Mexico, can drive illegally and/or drunk and when INS fails to show 72 hours later they will most likely either skip bail or be released without charge…

They get in less trouble for their actions than actual CITIZENS of this country!

Maybe when we build that wall we can put a neon sign on it that says “just dig, climb, swim, or fly around, sorry for the inconvenience”

Donald asks…

Why do feminists blame male biology on VAW, when research shows it’s an environmental issue?

It is well know that if you raise a child in a violent environment they’re going to be violent. Yet feminists and some women want to blame testosterone and the evil ‘Y’ chromosome on men’s violence against women and girls.

When women abuse children they do it more than men and also when women abuse kids they abuse/kill boys more.

Seems to me boys are raised with violent mothers more than violent fathers so boys are learning how to hate females.

So why do the VAW radicals think men will stop by acvtually calling us rapists, pimps and murderers? This only teaches us and boys to be violent.

You CANNOT stop half the problem!
Sweet_P – this is from the same website as that thread you linked to and it’s from 2003 to boot so must be worse now:
http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm03/figure3_6.htm

The Expert answers:

I personally agree with the first 1/2 of what you are saying: I don’t think testosterone or the Y chromosome has one whit to do with why men are so violent.

I think it is entirely cultural (or environment, as you put it). We have no way to prove otherwise, because there are no men or women who aren’t raised in patriarchal society.

However, I also do not believe for a moment that boys’ violence is due primarily to women. Over half of the abuse attributed to women and men (see my earlier posts/questions on this, from US Health and Human Services stats provided by another man on here) is neglect.

If women kill more boys, would someone please cite the original *source* of that statistic so I can look it up? (Don’t just give me the MRA site posting the stat w/o the source.)

Six times as many men kill women as vice versa (citation in my previous question about that) and men commit even more murder on men than women.

Even if we accept that women were abusing boys more than girls, and ignore that most of that abuse neglect, there is nowhere near 6x as much abuse of boys as girls. In fact, on the Health and Human Services site provided to me, the table I cited on it showed that girls were more likely to be abused than boys.

Finally, simply NAMING the fact that men are disproportionately rapists, pimps, and murders is far more constructive to addressing that violence than encourages it, relative to all of the ways in which boys are taught/trained from infancy into male supremacy and power.

Steven asks…

How much does science aid in the persistence of nonsensical beliefs?

I highly value science as our best means of gaining knowledge, so this is not the issue here. My question is more about the somewhat unique human capacity to override the way evolution ordinarily functions. Technological advancement has taken many previously relevant environmental pressures off of us. It seems to me one of the dangerous consequences of this is that people can hold beliefs that deviate from reality so much that the consequences would previously have been debilitating to life if not deadly. With the social power of many religions waning for instance, we would expect to see these beliefs would have to compete on their own, and ultimately be exposed as the fiction they are simply by not allowing life to flourish. But human advancement has prevented these consequences, and those ideas have no consequences, so they persist. What am I missing here, and how do we deal with it?

The Expert answers:

“There has been no significant change in Human DNA in 10,000 years, but is likely we will be able to completely redesign it in the next 1000.”

In my opinion messing around with the human genome would almost certainly have disasterous consequences. Apart from the overtones of “eugenics”, which the Nazis managed to make unfashionable after the Second World War, so called “gene therapy” has already had disasterous consequences in the form of the deaths of those involved.

DNA is not a structured computer program, and still less is it one we have the source code for.

Question about New Zealanders, Kiwi attitudes, politics, values and other socieitial issues?

1. Why do New Zealanders feel that Australians are better off when they really aren’t?
2. Why do New Zealanders aspire to have a conservative government?
3. Why are New Zealanders so hostile to such things and liberal ideas such as the Emmissons trading scheme, anti-smacking law and other humanitarian liberal ideas?
4. Why are they so tight-arsed about liberal ideas realating to social and economic issues?
5. Why are they so tight-arsed realting to giving thier taxes to needy people who are unemployed when some are really needy?
6. Why do they feel they must have a tough on crime approach like 3 strikes when they have some of the safest streets in the world compared to larger countries such as Australia (who has even softer laws and a higher crime rate too), Canada, UK and USA?
7. Why do they have such an inferior complex and have a chip on shoulder?
8. Why do they think that Australian Government policies are any better when all they do is cause lots of harm to Australians too?
9. Why are New Zealanders so unpatriotic about their own country and then come to Australia and think it so great and are therefore patriotic about Australia which Australians don’t even go on about?
10. Whats up with the kiwis negative attitudes?
11. Why do New Zealanders constantly think that their government tells them what to do when the similar, if not the same issues with Aussies goverment also tells us what to do therefore making australia also a nanny state?
12. Why do New Zealanders hate the idea of an Anti-Smacking law and water restrictions even though it happens in Australia?
13. Why do New Zealanders feel that they must have the same wages and same tax rates as Australia?
14. Why are average Australians far more liberal than the average New Zealanders about alot of social and economic issues?
15. Why do New Zealanders feel they must have the same strong economy as Australia?
16. It complexes and confuses me why they continue to come here even though we have serious water and environmental problems and can’t sustain our environment with our current population, surely they have no right to come here and whats up with them automatically being accepted as they are kiwis, shouldn’t they have to go through the same immigration procedure as any other immigrant and therefore requiring a visa to live in Australia, not make it an Automatic right, should we cut the string and make them apply like every other immigrant? The opposition was right by cutting australias immigration to like to eventually take only 30,000 instead of 300,000, its too many immigrants australia takes a year?
17. Why are New Zealanders so negative?

Please take the time to comment and opinionate on these issues kiwis.
EDIT:

18. Are New Zealanders just a bunch of ignorant, pig headed, arrogant, un-educated, idiotic and naive bunch of people and realise no matter when you are in this world, there will always be the same problems as at home, if not worse?
EDIT II:

I am sorry if some of this offends, but just currious.

The Expert answers:

I am a Kiwi and I feel some the originator’s comments are quite valid. We should not be so conservative and embark on a nuclear weapons campaign.Give all the Aborigines a 5 year holiday overseas, then, in the meantime nuke Australia then send all the remaining immigrants back to their own countries respectively….(after all you are an immigrant yourself aren’t you?) Then we can put a layer off topsoil over the affected areas and give it back to the Aborigines….Happy blogging 😀

Your Questions About Green Living

Lizzie asks…

What do you think about Al Gore’s alternative energy plan?

I think we should invest more money for alternative forms of energy, but his plan cannot be justified with today’s gas prices. His plan suggests that developing alternative energy is as urgent as developing the atomic bomb was to end World War II. Nobody knows what the price of gas will be tomorrow and that’s why we shouldn’t listen to Al Gore’s plan.

The Expert answers:

With due respect to the other poster, Global warming may be true or may not be true, this would all depend on the outcome of scientific studies currently being conducted by the scientific community. HOWEVER, supply of Fossil Fuel like crude oil, gas and coal are all finite. I agree with Al Gore’s energy plan, the first step is the hardest to take but given enough political resolve, we will be able to get an alternative energy source, and given enough time we can get an efficient one that does not need to take away available land for food production. 60 years ago we develop the atomic bomb and then harness its energy, though waste product are so dangerous that its hazards far outweights its benefits. 40 years ago we were able to send the first man on the moon, but such successes comes at a price. We can expect the same thing to happen when we start developing alternative energy source, and developing one is a must so that we no longer have to dance with oil rich countries who support terrorism against us.

Betty asks…

What are the social benefits of alternative energy?

I’m doing a project on alternative energy for school. We have to identify the environmental, economical and social impacts of small-scale Hydroelectricity, Solar energy and Wind energy and I’m not quite sure what the social benefits are… does anyone have any ideas???

Thank You 🙂

The Expert answers:

This must be the third time we have answered this question. The social benefits are that alternative energy will create jobs and keep the environment clean, if the environment is clean then people are happy.

Helen asks…

i think i would like to pursue a career in alternative energy, how can i accomplish this?

i am considering majoring in chemical engineering, environmental sciences… or maybe agriculture. i’m not really sure.
ideally i would like a career with a high salary. what should i do to achieve a decent career in alternative energy? i am a sophomore in high school and i’m planning on taking college courses this spring.

The Expert answers:

For the companies that will thrive, alternative energy will be all about developing and using high efficiency materials whether for solar panels, batteries, or corrosion resistant coatings for tidal power.

If you want the best chance for a broad career I would focus on courses (chemistry, physics, math, fluid mechanics) so that you can major in a field called “Materials Science”. Materials Science is the study and development of new stuff with new properties. Some examples of new materials that have been created by materials scientists are: Stealth coatings for military aircraft, metal foams, new types of solar panels, White Light LEDs, new computer chips, flame resistant clothing, injection molded plastics, etc.

One thing that I came to realize when doing college level science courses is that Physics and Chemistry are really just two sides of the same discipline. Math is simply the language that once learned, enables you to master your understanding of chemistry and physics.

Another thing I’d thoroughly recommend is that for a summer job and part time job, get a job on a work crew installing solar panels and wind turbines. The experience you get doing that will give you invaluable practical experience that will stay with you for the rest of your career. It may not be glamorous but that experience is what will get you hired immediately into a decent paying job immediately after graduating. It will also start your networking in the industry 4 years ahead of your peers!

Michael asks…

Alternative energy?

What has been done in michigan to make or to do anything with alternative energy/renewable energy. PLease help. I can’t find anything on the internet.

The Expert answers:

There are windmills on the north end of lake Michigan. The Muskegon river has a few dams that produce hydro.

Daniel asks…

Alternative energy?

Which is the best form Alternative energy for the environment and our future?

The Expert answers:

A combination of renewable energy will be required for a sustainable future. No one technology has the ability to meet all energy requirements. An effective combination of many technologies will be required to meet future energy demands. Each technology has it’s advantages and limitations, but together, they can solve the world energy crisis.

Cleaner alternatives include
– Hydroelectricity
– Wave power
– Solar energy
– Wind power
– Biofuel

Other alternatives such as nuclear can be used as a transitional technology to help our society move away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy. Clearly nuclear energy also has many concerns and is a limited resource, but technology can be used temporarily while we further develop more sustainable energy sources.

The key point is we need the combined effort of individual support and government support and funding. A combination of renewable energy sources can easily meet societies energy requirements if we invest enough research, time and capital into it.

There is no *single* solution to the energy crisis, it will be a combination of multiple technologies.

Vegans: Questions about wearing leather?

Ok I really try not to wear ANY animals at all and my thing is about leather like wheter its handbags or shoes ……
What if its vintage leather from like 1970’s etc. or something still wrong ?
I want to be a true vegan and have my morla and ethics match up and yet i dont want to be stuck wearing things that are not attractive if you know what i mean…….
My style is vintage things as apposed to buying new stuff all the time when you can get real cool clothes just the same from vintage stores and what not…….
What if you were say to travel to Europe ( Paris as an example) and you go shopping at there famed vintage stores and see amazing things you love but then notice how there made out of leather and you stop to think ……
What should you do ?
Im trying my best to be as animal friendly as well as eco friendly as possible from vegan friendly products and being as green as possible but i really need to know where vegans stand on vintage leather
thanks i hope that made sense and didnt sound too rambly…….

The Expert answers:

It’s so great that you are sticking to the vegan lifestyle. There is no rule book; however, wearing leather is just as bad as eating the meat that comes from that cow. It’s your decision to take a stand against animal cruelty, and ripping their flesh off is no better than chopping them up.
Vintage or not, if it was me, I would not wear anything made of leather. It’s a contradiction to the lifestyle that you live.

I hope this helps you !! There are sooo many cute vintage pieces, and vintage inspired pieces made without leather; I am sure you can find a great wardrobe !! Good Luck

Linda asks…

I’m looking for some hemp sandals that are like these Ecocross sandals?

I’m looking for some sandals that look like these – http://www.rawganique.com/graphics/footwear/ecocrossM.jpg They are Unisex EcoCross 100% Hemp Sandals. I found them here – http://www.rawganique.com/footwear2.htm But they are all out of my shoe size. I wear a womens size 8 or 8 1/2. The site with these shoes only has womens 6 to 7 sizes. Are there any shoes out there that are like these ones?
I like the big straps on them and the colors. I want something that goes around the back of my foot like these ones do. It’d be cool if they were made out of hemp or something that’s eco friendly, but they don’t have to be.
Thanks for all your help 🙂

I Need Help With These DispoSe Garbage Journal- My English Is Not That Well… ASAP! 10PNTS?

The best way we can dispose of our garbage is by using bags made of natural materials and reusing them to carry our groceries. Reclining any product we can such as paper, metal, glass, plastic and plants materials give us a healthy environment. Using a good alternative is helpful in this cases. Landfill are actually healthy ways to dispose of certain waste products. My building is build with garbage chutes on every floor carefully and tightly we package our trash to dispose them.

I decided last Tuesday to take out those clothes I won’t use anymore in my closet. My house has a closet for extra storage space, something that benefits us greatly because we keep extras stuff though not used now, but in the future. Now we enter spring I need to rid of of those unused clothes I won’t wear anymore for now on In order to have more space and void bad smell in my closet. Before deciding what to do with them I went to the laundry to have them clean and ready to be pack.My coats and jackets always give me a problem since I can’t have them all together tend to smell bad specially when it rain,so are the one that first go out of my closet. If they still usable, then I donate them to any charity home for a good cause instead of throw it away. After I separate my clothes according to their type. I First started with my pants since they are too heavy and use a lot of space in my closet. Most of the time I don’t keep my sweater so I prefer to give them away as they tend to succeed or wasted with time, but those who choose to keep are held in my drawer. The shoes are very hard to keep as are used tend to smell bad all together if plan to give them away. Although shoe boxes are a lot of space I always keep them for this kind of situation.

On friday I always go to the supermarket to buy some food and personal things. I bring own bag to purchase groceries. It’s simple one to reduce resin waste. When I purchased hair color, each package included a container, a brush, gloves manufactured by resin. It’s one time used because I can obtain a same one for net purchase. Buying products with as little packaging as possible, of course from ecofriendly companies save us time, money and space. When came home went to the kitchen. What I first did was to check the refrigerator since there its where my mom put a lot of unused stuff that we tipically have to throw away often. There were two expired meat so I put them together in a newspaper to avoid contamination. Two Water and juicy leave empty to prevent any liquid in the trash. Usually I disposed 5 or 6 can of soda per week. I separate them from the other item in a bag as there are many people who use them to get money to eat or etc. When I took there where a lot of sausage, bean cans, and corn 5 of each, I was suprised since it made me realize how much money we waste on things that most of the time we don’t use.
Sunday was the day to clean my room! I Spent a few hours taking out everything from my drawers, organizing, and throwing out what I no longer needed to dispose any old and unused materials. I opened the window for ventilation, specially my bedroom that is so hot! I always started using my eletric broom to make sure that I don’t leave anything under the bed. Since I work in a retail store I’m always buying new stuff such as clothes, accesories, gum and etc.. I used this kind of days to throw away those that expired or if not need it anymore. I put in a small bag two rings and three watches to dispose them away. My niece have a lot of toys of her in my bedroom. I refuse to throw toys in the trash because it wastes my money and because it’s definitely not good for the environment as it sits in the landfill when it could have been recycled/reused. But I need space in my bedroom and kids are always asking for more. So I had to throw away 3 of them.

Recycling is a truly over-rated way to improve the environment. There is a great underestimation of the available space and capacity of landfill areas, certainly in the US, and probably worldwide as well. There is also no real crisis in our most recycled resources, either aluminum and glass are still cheap to produce, and there are still enough trees around to make paper cheaper from the tree than by recycling. The stuff in the trash gets buried deep in a landfill in an anaerobic environment, and so does not decay. The stuff you toss down the disposal gets ground down and flushed away, where it can go back into the environment.

(UK) What would you do if you were to become prime minster? I would:?

•Get the army out of Iraq, Afghanistan and anywhere else there is a war I will stop it which will also save money as well
•Tax the middle class people more and stop footballers and celebs getting paid so much
•If your under 20 bus fare is free all around England but adults will only have to pay 45p, you would only need to pay 50p for tubes and DLR if you are under 20, 70p if you are over 21, 40p if you are old and disabled. + all buses to be double deckers
•For teachers, TA’s, care workers, supporters, people working with disabled children and in old peoples homes, fire men, police, ambulance people, nurses, doctors, GP’s to get paid more, maybe twice as more then they get now.
•Create more jobs for people like opening up more care homes, leisure centres, youth centres, cinemas, arcades (these games places they have in America), shopping centres, factory work and many more things
•University fees to be £900 instead of £9000 so basically make it more cheaper
•Get rid of a lot of illegal and foreign people as there is no space/control the amount of people who gets through to come to England/make boarder secure to stop too much people coming in
•Create more family size homes for people who need it
•Take away VAT and make clothes, shoes, toiletries, electrical and food cheaper.
•Only allow people to get married at the age of 21 (because it’s too young under this age)
•No one under 19 can get pregnant if they do then they should have an abortion or pay a fine, basically no teenage pregnancies because its too young and you need a education and career first before you have kids
•Make England more ecofriendly
•People can have no more then 4 kids as if there are too many people in England then it isn’t good as England would be over crowded in the next 10 years I don’t want that to happen.

what would u do?

PETROBRAS! Brazilian Oil Company owned by George Soros, Obama got deep water drill permits, but no US corp WHY?

Petrobras got a 2 billion $ loan to deep drill compliments of Obama recently. Now they get to drill in OUR WATERS, while our companies don’t and we will be buying oil from them. Who is president of Brazil right now? A communist revolutionary who did time for her involvement in the Communist movement in Brazil.

Mexico also got a 2 billion $ Loan to deep drill in the Golf. Not sure of the ins and outs, but that’s oil we should be drilling.

We are also just sitting by while China drills off Florida using Cuban permits, taking oil thats closer to the US waters than Cuban. The Chinese are unaccountable to our environmental standards. More chance of spill, no oil in US control which would bring down prices.

How clear does it have to be? We are being sold out. We are being deliberately torn down by an enemy from within.

Doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican, Democrat, or Independent. If you plan to live in this country you should be very concerned.

Also you should be concerned about the media covering this up. I mean politics is one thing, but to cover up a big sell out like this? Something may be rotten in Denmark, and it probably is, but there is no doubt something is stinking to high heaven right here at home.

If we don’t pull our heads out our country will be sold out from under us while we squabble over issues that seem to be planted to smoke screen what is really doing our country grave damage.

If the Republicans were really on the people’s side, they would be yelling bloody murder about this and shutting things down. I was hoping there was someone on our side, but sadly, I don’t think there is. Maybe just the Tea Party, maybe not even all of those.

It’s up to we the people, our government officials are selling us out.
Dyslexia be can fun … GHW Bush is the CEO of Petrobras? Is that true? Any documentation you can point me to? Thomas asks…

Why is climate change considered the most important environmental problem?

Everybody seems to agree that climate change is the most important environmental issue yet no-one seems to be able to answer the question as to why it is so much more important than massive population growth or severely depleted food-stocks and bio-diversity. Even in “An Inconvenient Truth” he says “this is the most important environmental problem on the planet” but never gets round to explaining why he thinks that.

I don’t doubt that it is happening, I work in an industry where it can be plainly seen on a daily basis, but I’m just confused as to why it is considered so much more important than, say, the imminent starvation of the entire planet due to massive over-harvesting of limited resources and the associated destruction of entire eco-systems.

I can’t help get the feeling it is because harvesting of endangered species makes money and stopping it has no economic benefit whereas convincing everyone that they need to buy a new type of car or hot water system and throwing on an associated tax is big business and is going to make countries and companies who jump on the band-wagon literally billions of dollars. I keep feeling conned

Sharon asks…

Who benefits from a global climate crisis?

“Scientists who use climate change to explain environmental changes improve their chances of getting research grants from foundations, corporations — and U.S. government programs that budget a whopping $6.5 billion for global warming in 2007. They also increase the likelihood of getting headlines and quotes in news stories: “Climate change threatens extinction of rare frogs, scientist says.” Climate disaster skeptics face an uphill battle on grants, headlines, quotes and job security.
* Politicians can curry favor with activists who support re-election campaigns and higher aspirations; transform $14 billion in alternative energy pork into ethical planetary protection; and promote policies that otherwise would raise eyebrows.”

The Expert answers:

The only beneficiaries will be governments. And eventually it will need to be a one world government. After all, if I don’t use a CF bulb, it is harmful to everyone on the planet. The losers will be all peoples who will lose all of their rights. When it comes to global warming, there is nothing that you do that doesn’t effect everyone else.

I don’t think it is worth it. Let the planet warm one degree and let the oceans rise 17 inches. So what.

Lizzie asks…

Does anyone else get the feeling that even if there was an entrepreneur who could become a “Rockefeller of?

alternative energy” and make nice-looking small wind turbines that were quiet, cost effective synchronous inverters, super-affordable solar cells and hybrid cars that could go like hell while still getting 70 mpg, many conservatives would still scoff at alternative energy just because FOX News told them to?

Alternative energy is weak right now. The industry is over-run by wimpy cry-babies who are more interested in soaking up government incentives and university kudos than actually getting anything done. All that’s needed to make alternative energy more viable is one damn good entrepreneur.

The Expert answers:

Ruth asks…

Is Al Gore too hypocritical in his own environmental practices to win the Nobel peace prize?

Among having been the deciding vote to alleviate the gas tax when he was VP he also owns 5 homes one of which burned over ten times the average amount of energy for the area, as well as not having alternative energy sources to power them.

Don’t get me wrong I’m a huge environmentalist and if all Gore has done anything he has brought attention to the issue. I just think the spokesman from the environment should practice what he preaches. So giving the award to Al Gore instead of someone truly deserving seems a rather political than earnest move by the part of the Nobel peace prize committee.

“Awarding it to Al Gore cannot be seen as anything other than a political statement. Awarding it to the IPCC is well-founded,” said Bjorn Lomborg, author of “The Skeptical Environmentalist.”

The Expert answers:

Fifty years from now, those of us who are still alive will see the results of Al Gore’s mission. It’s easy to sit at our computers and chastise Gore for failing to ‘practice what he preaches’, but I wonder how many of the Gore critics actually know with absolute certainty that he, indeed, is so hypocritical.
The criticism comes mostly comes from Gore’s political opponents, who don’t seem to recognize that this is NOT a political issue. Global warming is a very real and serious threat to all of mankind; and it’s all because we citizens of the world during the past 150 years have chosen to waste, squander and spoil the very environment that sustains us.

Just because you don’t agree with Gore’s politics doesn’t mean you should turn a blind eye to his message about global warming. As arrogance, ignorance, bias, puffery, prejudice, bigotry and hubris sets in, we seem to lose sight of the fact that we have destroyed our planet with our smoke-belching factories; gas-guzzling Hummers and SUVs; refusal to REuse, REduce and REcycle; intrusive coal mining; destruction of rain forests and mangrove forest throughout the world; overfishing of the oceans; and absolute disregard for all of the plants and animals that are necessary for the very survival of the human species.
Those of you are are younger and haven’t started a family yet need to be keenly aware of Gore’s messages. If something isn’t done within the next ten years to stop the environmental and ecological erosion of our planet, YOUR children and grandchildren will be left to suffer, living lives without sufficient clean water, little clean air, and nothing short of global devastation without food sources, natural resources or elements vital to human existence.
Your great-grandchildren will inherit a world full of cement and asphalt monoliths, without greenery, trees, flowers, streams, clean oceans, whales, polar bears, babbling brooks, exotic frogs, agriculture, insects or pure air. ‘So what?” you might ask. How will you answer your darling great grand daughter as she sits on your lap and asks, “Gee, Grandpa, why didn’t you do anything to save me from all this depredation?” How will you answer HER??

Helen asks…

Does America’s economy really affect the world?

Here in America, our news talks about how our current economic woes has brought down the markets all over the world. How does our economy affect the people of Australia? Do you feel the American downturn has affected Australia? It was our greedy bankers that made bad loans on real estate, it’s our oil greedy President who hasn’t supported alternative energy. I really don’t understand how this works and was wondering how the people of Australia feel about this statement.

The Expert answers:

All world economies are interlinked with one another. If one collapses then the others will feel the empty space and will need to readjust.
Btw it was the war that caused it, not an oil greedy President.

California Solar Company Gets $5 billion contract in China. Is this the new economy?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100109/ap_on_bi_ge/as_china_solar_power
Al Gore and Obama both has said that the new US economy will be made up of “Green jobs”.
Now a California company has received a lucrative contract to build a huge solar electric-generating plant in China. Is this the future? Can being a tree-hugging, alternative energy company make billions?

The Expert answers:

Yes, China is outpacing America in the green industry. We will get left behind if we don’t pick it up. China has been innovating green tech for the past few years while we do nothing and the GOP attempts to block any kind of green tech stimulus. This IS the future and we can watch China out pace us or we can pick it up and treat it like we did the moon race – which is how it should be treated.

What degree, class etc. do you need in order to make eco products and stuff?

i know environmental engineering helps much and so does civil engineering.
I want to know what other things do i need to start making eco friendly products
Im in middle school but i want to start thinking about my future and yes i have straight a’s

The Expert answers:

Wow, you’re thinking ahead 🙂 and good job on the straight A’s.

When you get to high school you should consider taking classes in Chemistry and Biology. Preferably AP classes if they are available so that you can take more advanced classes in college. It’s also a good idea to take a math class every year, through calculus if your school offers it.

Environmental and Civil engineering will work on large scale projects from my understanding, and Chemical engineering is also another good degree to consider. A chemistry degree would also be useful especially if coupled with biology classes.

Will passage of the healthcare bill with a strong public option and the passage of the alternative energy bill?

that will create alot of jobs in this country be the end of the GOP as we know it? Since they have no vision for the future of this country and no ideas of their own?
JW… I don’t want a one party system either. But right now we have the GOP, the party of the right wing extremists. And, the Democratic party which is just to the right of center. I don’t see those as real choices either.
bbj…. I actually went ot private schools. You’re wrong about the GOP and the Dems. Obviously, you skipped the Comparative political philosophy classes.

Chris asks…

Why are 4 regular jobs lost for every 1 green job created?

http://eyeonfreedom.com/index.php/4-jobs-lost-for-every-green-job-created/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+EyeOnFreedom+%28Eye+on+Freedom%29&utm_content=Twitter

A study of renewable energy in Scotland shows that for every job created in the alternative energy sector, almost four jobs are lost in the rest of the economy. We’ve seen this movie before.

Not only has the sun set on the British Empire, but the promise of wind apparently is deserting it as well. A new study called “Worth The Candle?” by the consulting firm Verso Economics confirms the experience of Spain and other countries: The creation of “green” jobs destroys other jobs through the diversion of resources and the denial of abundant sources of fossil fuel energy.

The economic candle in the U.K. is being blown out by wind power. The Verso study finds that after the annual diversion of some 330 million British pounds from the rest of the U.K. economy, the result has been the destruction of 3.7 jobs for every “green” job created.

The Expert answers:

I’ll bet it’s because the green jobs are jobs created by government spending either directly or indirectly with tax breaks, which means they have to take money out of the economy and divert them to something that doesn’t pay for itself. If the subsidizing never ends, there’s no telling how many jobs it can cost the private sector especially in their respective category of competition.

Lisa asks…

Has Hillary every had an ordinary job with a tough boss kicking her butt every morning?

She doesn’t know what ordinary work, the grind, is like month after month. She lives in a political bubble. Idealistic and out of touch, just like Obama. They don’t know, the imagine. But aren’t they really all out of touch? It doesn’t take long to forget when you make it to the sweet life. How is that any different from the Hollywood crowd. Out of touch and looking at the world through rose colored glasses. More, better, upward, jobs, day care, new cars, alternative energy and wisdom and a kinder, gentler country. Perfect.

The Expert answers:

I’m voting McCain, but I at least can give Hillary credit for all the sh1t she put up with to get her shot and then some weasel un-american punk comes along and steals it….thats gotta suck.

” Hi I’m black, inexperianced, have sh1t for judgment, and probably not even an american citizen, vote for me “, and the backstabbers did.

Lizzie asks…

Tell me what you guys think of this alternative energy plan..?

If its good please tell me how might i spread the word.. if it suck please be nice.. 🙁

and im not very good with my English grammar..

In my Physic class today my professor talks about energy.. he talk about how human stores their energy in form of fats, how the government built this one Dam (hoover dam) to help stimulate our economy in the great depression, and how we uses the river’s kinetic energy to power Las Vegas… and he talks about how energy is converted or moved and how much it get wasted(efficiency), when we buy gas only 25% of our money is actully being spend… I then stand in front of my Calculus class start seeing a hamster run in my head.. and then i start remembering how the bike machine in our gym uses no electricity, but uses our momentum to turn it self on then it rely on us to keep it on..

So this is my plan…

Why not have our president put up a job program where we get pay for exercising while generating energy
like have us run on a treadmill as a JOB..

1. we get healthy
2. we get money
3. keep our economy strong
4. energy efficient (instead of wasting money going to gym they pay us)
5. many more advantages that i cant think of at the moment..

My friends told me this is a stupid idea.. and so i just wana see what everyone think.. the only thing i see that is bad about this is ppl might see this as slavery.. but we get pay for it.. so i dont think it matter.. and its a choice..
hm.. well if 1 person can generate that little energy why cant we have ALOT of ppl do it.. iono.. >.< ever since i think about this idea i think running is such a waste

The Expert answers:

I had thought of a gym model like this a few years ago, but not with the notions of paying people to generate power . There is actually a gym in Oregon who has something like this now. Keep in mind ,all people do not use food with the same efficiency ,not to mention ‘energy loss’ , meaning : the energy it takes to produce food, harvest, packaging , shipping..etc is Much higher than the power 1 person would generate on a bike in 4 hours ,No matter how fit they were. At a job like this only the fittest would be allowed to work=D . The body produces other things like Heat and sweat that can be used . A great green idea is to produce only things that something(someone) else can use up completely

I think the problem with your Idea is $ profit. Group of people were to grow and collect all their food & water , with the use of batteries they could generate the energy to power a laptop ,lights ,some small heating or cooling apps..etc. Understanding just a little about thermodynamics tells us that energy is only redirected ,never created(so far 😉 . The end of Cheap energy means finding new ways to use LESS power and use it more efficiently. Good Work,,Keep Thinking,

Jenny asks…

How much is Seven Billion dollars?

Oh, about the amount of dollars we export each year to OPEC…

We need to take the bail out money and invest in alternative energy and create jobs as well as keep dollars, here!
Excuse my typing – Question should read, How much is 700 billion dollars.

The Expert answers:

It is:

– $2300 for every man, woman, and child in the United States
– 5 times the total fortune of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett combined
– enough to fun the war in Iraq for about 6 years
– 1.7 million tons of pennies

How do you become “Eco-Friendly”?

I want to start helping out the environment and other people who are more unfortunate than I am. The only problem is I have no idea where to start. If anyone could recommend some websites to get started that would be awesome. This can include places to buy ecofriendly items, clothes, household tools, office supplies… etc. Or webistes that help people such as freerice.com or simple things you can do at home. I would deeply appreciate it. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Fantastic! Yeah there’s a lot of things you can do just by making some small lifestyle changes:
For example
– use public trasportation instead of own car as much as possible
– use trains etc. Instead of short distance flights
– save on electricity by unplugging devices when when you are not using them(even when they are turned off they use up electricity if they are plugged in)
– start recycling: biowaste, glass, plastic, paper etc. Find out where your local recycling center is.
– buy foods from the grocery store that are locally produced, or as close as possible (e.g. Buy domestic fruit instead of foreign(less fuel has been used for transportation))
– consume less products in general, fix things intead of buying new ones etc
… The list goes on
there’s A LOT to read on the net, type in “tips living green” etc in google.com you’ll get endlessly of websites there.. Good luck! 🙂

Environmental Project Ideas?

Hey! Ok, for a school project in geography we have to create a powerpoint presentation on an environmental issue of our choice. Here are some examples that they gave us:
Deforestation
Over fishing
Pollution
Animal extinction(Choose only one animal)
Oil spills
Urbanization
Mining
and Hurricanes

Ok, if I chose one from there, it would be sharks extinction. But, I want to do something the nobody would choose. It has to answers these questions:
How have humans interacted with the enviroment to create this issue?
Where does this issue occur most often?
Give a specific example of this issue
Give people or groups on both sides of this issue

Any ideas that nobody would think of? It is for a geography project, and if there are some good websites or books for informantion, please say them! P.S.
Do you think hybrids would work? Probably not….. anyway, thanks for the answers ahead of time!

The Expert answers:

One of the big ways to deal with groundwater contamination, and oil spills that get into groundwater, is through phytoremediation (or the use of bacteria to clean up the contaminant). There are groups now that are creating bacteria that preferentially eat oils and industrial solvents.

I wouldn’t imagine that too many people would get into this, but there is alot of information available on the web about this, so your research shouldn’t be to hard.

Also, you tend to get big points from teachers for big words like “Phytoremediation”.

James asks…

How do you, US citizen feel this opinion?

This is an opinion by Yukio Hatoyama, new prime minister of Japan.

A New Path for Japan

Article Tools Sponsored By By YUKIO HATOYAMA Published: August 26, 2009

TOKYO — In the post-Cold War period, Japan has been continually buffeted by the winds of market fundamentalism in a U.S.-led movement that is more usually called globalization. In the fundamentalist pursuit of capitalism people are treated not as an end but as a means. Consequently, human dignity is lost.

How can we put an end to unrestrained market fundamentalism and financial capitalism, that are void of morals or moderation, in order to protect the finances and livelihoods of our citizens? That is the issue we are now facing.

In these times, we must return to the idea of fraternity — as in the French slogan “liberté, égalité, fraternité” — as a force for moderating the danger inherent within freedom.

Fraternity as I mean it can be described as a principle that aims to adjust to the excesses of the current globalized brand of capitalism and accommodate the local economic practices that have been fostered through our traditions.

The recent economic crisis resulted from a way of thinking based on the idea that American-style free-market economics represents a universal and ideal economic order, and that all countries should modify the traditions and regulations governing their economies in line with global (or rather American) standards.

In Japan, opinion was divided on how far the trend toward globalization should go. Some advocated the active embrace of globalism and leaving everything up to the dictates of the market. Others favored a more reticent approach, believing that efforts should be made to expand the social safety net and protect our traditional economic activities. Since the administration of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi (2001-2006), the Liberal Democratic Party has stressed the former, while we in the Democratic Party of Japan have tended toward the latter position.

The economic order in any country is built up over long years and reflects the influence of traditions, habits and national lifestyles. But globalism has progressed without any regard for non-economic values, or for environmental issues or problems of resource restriction.

If we look back on the changes in Japanese society since the end of the Cold War, I believe it is no exaggeration to say that the global economy has damaged traditional economic activities and destroyed local communities.

In terms of market theory, people are simply personnel expenses. But in the real world people support the fabric of the local community and are the physical embodiment of its lifestyle, traditions and culture. An individual gains respect as a person by acquiring a job and a role within the local community and being able to maintain his family’s livelihood.

Under the principle of fraternity, we would not implement policies that leave areas relating to human lives and safety — such as agriculture, the environment and medicine — to the mercy of globalism.

Our responsibility as politicians is to refocus our attention on those non-economic values that have been thrown aside by the march of globalism. We must work on policies that regenerate the ties that bring people together, that take greater account of nature and the environment, that rebuild welfare and medical systems, that provide better education and child-rearing support, and that address wealth disparities.

Another national goal that emerges from the concept of fraternity is the creation of an East Asian community. Of course, the Japan-U.S. security pact will continue to be the cornerstone of Japanese diplomatic policy.

But at the same time, we must not forget our identity as a nation located in Asia. I believe that the East Asian region, which is showing increasing vitality, must be recognized as Japan’s basic sphere of being. So we must continue to build frameworks for stable economic cooperation and security across the region.

The financial crisis has suggested to many that the era of U.S. unilateralism may come to an end. It has also raised doubts about the permanence of the dollar as the key global currency.

I also feel that as a result of the failure of the Iraq war and the financial crisis, the era of U.S.-led globalism is coming to an end and that we are moving toward an era of multipolarity. But at present no one country is ready to replace the United States as the dominant country. Nor is there a currency ready to replace the dollar as the world’s key currency. Although the influence of the U.S. is declining, it will remain the world’s leading military and economic power for the next two to three decades.

Moving from the US to Europe?

I am a junior in high school so I still have plenty of time but I would like to know some information in advance so I have goals to work toward. I would like to live in a European nation for several reasons.

I love the diversity of culture in just about any European nation, not to mention the beautiful landscape. The European Union is another thing I’m a big fan of and would like to live under. I find the European culture to be one that is more accepting and even appreciative of diversity and the arts.

I also like how many of the countries, such as France and Italy off the top of my head, are much slower paced. They use bicycles and public transport instead of constant car usage and you are more likely to find a European that is concerned about environmental issues than you are to find an American.

There are many more reasons and I could go on forever about it. However, I’m concerned about cost of living (which is considerably higher in many European countries) and how to get on my feet living in another continent. So what country would you recommend and what tips would you have for a future immigrant?

The Expert answers:

I moved to Italy from Colorado about 11 years ago for my job. It’s been a great experience for me. There are wonderful people, interesting things to see and do and it’s easy to go out exploring when there’s available time. It is not the same as a vacation though. You still need to support yourself and the economy is not good right now. Hopefully, it will improve in the future and be easier when you’re ready to move. I would suggest that you might want to think about aiming toward marketable skills such as healthcare. Consider a university program that will allow you to spend a semester or year abroad to get some experience in your target country or even enrol in a foreign university. Start working on language skills now.

You cannot just pick up and move to Europe from the US. In order to live and work legally here, you would first need a visa that allows you to do so and those are not easy to get. EU citizens have the right to live and work freely within the EU, others cannot automatically live and work here. The site for visas here in Italy is: http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp . The site has links to the application, the additional information you need to supply in order to get the visa and where to apply. It also includes education visas which are somewhat easier to get than work visas and residential visas which would require you to show that you can support yourself without working. For France, check the consulate website: http://www.consulfrance-losangeles.org/s… – you can click on the links for information about long stay visas and working in France. Look up consulate websites for similar information for other countries.

The rules in much of the EU have been harmonized and will be similar. You need to apply for and receive the visa before you arrive.

A work permit is separate – you cannot apply for that yourself. The company has to apply and they have to be able to demonstrate that there is not a viable EU candidate for the job. As a result, jobs for foreigners including Canadian or US citizens are pretty much restricted to people with special education, knowledge, or experience … And you would have to be able to speak the local language. Right now, the best bet would probably be something in the health care field. When I moved here, it was through a transfer of the job I was already doing in the US to the Italian office. Even so, it took 8 months to put all the paperwork in place to apply for a visa. Administrative/receptionist work is unlikely since there will be tons of European candidates for those positions. You might look a jobs doing translations though.

It’s useful to check the expat sites for information about living and working in the places you might be interested in:
