Sharon asks…

Why do conservatives think they know how to spend their money better than the government?

Americans waste so much money on useless junk. For example, they buy two SUVs that burn up tons of fossil fuel polluting the air instead of one ecofriendly Toyota Prius or electric smart car. They live in million-dollar mansions, wear expensive name-brand clothing, buy 70-inch plasma TVs, and rack up massive debt with their credit cards.

We should give 90% of our money to the government because they know how to invest for our future. They will create millions of green jobs, help fight poverty and provide free healthcare for everyone with our money. The government is wise because they are staffed by benevolent intellectuals from our wonderful institutions of higher learning, such as Harvard and Columbia.

Amateur lighting techniques?

I have a canon powershot sx40, im really into film, and this is a definite improvement, but it’s not a super high end canon. Anyway, for christmas i got two large umbrella lights and also a shorter light if i want to put the umbrella on that one.
I wanted to make a clothing video and REALLY want to make it look bright and clear. These lights are the eco friendly high powered white ones.
******** my main question is, do I turn the OTHER lighs off in my room, or do I turn on as many lights as I can with my tripod lights? I’m not sure which would look brighter, and less pixely. (this camera isn’t pixely very much, but in the dark, a little bit.)
please answer my main question:)
thanks
!!!!

The Expert answers:

“Crim Liar” is actually correct in the answer to make the room lights the same as the studio lights, but in most practical cases, the studio lights are made the same color temp as the room lights. Now, I very much doubt you understand color temperature and I know you do not have the needed gels or bulbs that are a match for the tungsten lights, (or fluorescent lights), in your room.

The main thing you want to avoid is mixed lighting. Light has what is known as color temperature, and that is NOT the same as actual physical temperature. A “cool” light will have a blueish cast, tungsten lights are more “warm” and give the orange cast in a photo. Fluorescents are horrid and will give a terrible green cast to your photos / video. Your studio lights should be close to the ideal daylight balance of about 5600 degrees Kelvin, which means your color will look natural.

So, what you need to do is turn OFF all other room lights. Otherwise, you are going to have a mixed lighting situation and your color in the video is going to be impossible to control and will look very amateurish. Let your studio lights be your only source of light as much as possible. They should be plenty bright enough for video. Video requires far less light than still photography.

Charles asks…

I get along with a lot of ppl but feel like I’m outside looking in?

My whole life I’ve felt like an outcast. I don’t have any best friends just friends i hang out at school with. Majority of my cousins are grown and those that aren’t either live in another state or have other plans and don’t consider me hanging out with them. I’m either at work or at school. When I’m not at school or work then i’m at home. I’m hardly ever invited anywhere (movies, restaurant, etc.).I’m always asking my mother to go to the movies with me b/c i have no one else to go with. I don’t have a boyfriend ,never been in love and never been kissed. I go shopping by myself. There are times that I’m invited to go to the movies with someone or to a sleepover but that’s like twice a year. I don’t understand whats wrong b/c obviously something is wrong with me (am i ugly? do i smell bad? do i have something on my face?) I can’t be ugly b/c every says i should be model (even ppl i dont know. no lie). I love to have fun, love movies, reading, and music. I’m very ambitious, I want to go to college and major in finance, human resources and interior design and become a financial planner/ real estate agent/ interior designer. Have all A’s and one C in the devils class AP Language (the teacher is horrible). I know what i want in a boyfriend. And i know i can be great friend. Well i am to my classmates but I’m just waiting for someone to be great friend back.
I watch movies all the time and i think that it has alot to do with my head being in the clouds. I want the romantic love you see in romance novels and movies- that has alot to do with my standards for a man.
the “IT”boys at school say that I stuck up but really they never spoke to me to know who i truly am. Everyone around me has a boyfriend and go out on weekends which makes me feel lonely and out of place. The only friends i have is music, movies, and books which is kind of depressing.
My parents are proud of me b/c i’m so open minded and not one dimensional. I into the green movement and i try to get my parents to be Eco friendly which is very hard b/c we have know ecofriendly clothing stores and whatnot. We just have recycling companies that don’t really recycle everything. They oppose composting but i don’t what i can.

I just hope and pray that my future is so much brighter than my present and past.

Any advice you have for me. What do you think is wrong?
want more any info just ask.

The Expert answers:

Hey girl stop beating yourself up I have the same prob. My only friends are my parents and some of my sisters oh yes and Jesus, i like your style and to tell you the truth it won’t be very easy to have a boyfriend with such a style as yours. But don’t worry too much about that it’s a good thing because for a person with your ambition you need not get involved with a guy or friends who might not encourage you in this area. Trust me it’s difficult to find friends who support you in achieving great things, they are either angry or envious of you studying and getting good grades. Instead of building you up they seek to destroy you and your dream, so honey just hang in there and be patient your time will come. And keep up the good grades and work hard towards your goals, you’ll find someone suitable soon your future WILL be brighter than your present if you don’t give up. Nothing is wrong with you and don’t let anyone tell you ohterwise. You see as a young woman if you wanna be successful, you have to be smart, guys would want you if you give them sex only then (most times). If a guy respects you and himself, he would not seek that from you so don’t be fooled. Go ahead with your studies and wait for the right one to come along you got your whole life ahead of you.May Jehovah Bless and Keep you through all this.

Susan asks…

My friend has REALLY changed her style! How do I tell her she looks like a ho? ?

I have known this friend ‘Priscilla’ for 5 years. She used to have a really cute style. She wore natural looking makeup, surfer shorts, flip flops and more casual clothing. She was a vegetarian and refused to wear stuff that wasn’t ecofriendly. She dressed ‘boho’ style (sort of like Mary Kate Olsen but much cuter) and looked comfortable.

5 years later she is like a different person. She wears FUR, dresses like a hootchie, wears too much makeup and orange self tanner. She hobbles around in high heels, bleaches her hair and criticizes my cheap handbags and tells me I should ‘update’ my look. Maybe she is right but I LIKE the way I look and told her so!

I am getting fed up with the new ‘her’. She looks like Paris Hilton. She always asks me how things look and gets mad when I am honest. I just want to tell her, “Sweetie, you look like a ho!” but I know she’ll just get mad. Truthfully I am so sick of her, I don’t really care if she stops being my friend at this point. Should I just tell her next time she asks? What should I say when she says ‘you’re jealous because I look good.” or something? (which I just KNOW she’ll say!) If she was your friend, would you just tell her? We are both in our 20’s and I have better crap to worry about than buying designer junk and caking on makeup!

good, cheap photojournalism schools?

i am planning to go to school for photojournalism and if possible minor in english. i will be moving with my boyfriend, 2 cats, a dog and my hermit crabs. we are both 22 and are very adventurous and outdoorsie people that also love the vibe of a city. below is a list of things i want out of the town the college is in as i may want to live there permanently. i not only want to go to school but i want to make an adventure out of this move. i want it to be a fresh start for us.

-artistic, young and cultured vibe, full of artsie and unique people
-cheap apartments that are pet friendly, perferrably very open and spacious. (studio’s are great)
-places to hike, be outdoors
-weather can be a tad chilly. not frigid all year ’round though
-lots of job opportunities.
-very bicycle friendly, and places to ride as we are avid bike riders
eco friendly options, whole foods market, farmers market, etc…
-thrift stores, second hand stores, as i love vintage clothing.
-perferrably low crime area, i’m not to down with a bunch of hoodalims. i enjoy having fun but i don’t want to live in fear of being mugged.

if anyone has a placein mind i would love to hear your opinions. thanks!

The Expert answers:

I don’t know Bowling Green, Kentucky well, but Western Kentucky University may be a good choice. Moderate weather, I’ve heard it is pretty.

Ohio University isn’t too expensive in Athens is pretty and not too expensive, but jobs are pretty limited.

Indiana University will be colder but there are probably more jobs in Bloomington than Athens.

University of Texas has some of those on our list, but I don’t know about housing.

University of Oregon may have a lot of those items, but it may be costly.

I wouldn’t recommend English as a minor because it won’t do much for you in finding a job. Both fields are hard to get jobs in. I’d either minor in something like broadcasting to build video skills, or find a very practical minor.

Eco friendly shower drain un-cloggers: homemade solution or store bought?

My shower drain remains clogged. I don’t let very much hair go down (but my hair is long) so I don’t know if it is the hair or just gunk. After I put something down there and let it work overnight I usually have a normal running drain for MAYBE 3 showers.

A lot of store bought products are not safe to use on drains and more importantly the environment…Any ideas for something environmentally safe?

Maria asks…

can anyone give me some tips on how to make eco friendly or green household cleaners?

For example window cleaner, bathroom cleaner, floor cleaner, laundry detergent, any type of pet products, etc….
I just want to try to go green and would rather make them myself, so any tips on how to make any type of cleaning product would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much!

The Expert answers:

Baking Soda

* A lot of your household cleaning can be done with baking soda. In your bathroom and kitchen, sprinkle baking soda on non-scratch surfaces, such as countertops, sinks, cutting boards, refrigerators, and more. Scrub the surfaces with a damp cloth or sponge (remember to wash your sponges in the dishwasher with your dishes).
* This can also be used to clean out appliances. Create a paste with baking soda and water and coat the inside of the appliance with the paste. Allow to sit overnight, and scrub out the next day.
* Cleaning out your plugged up drains can also be done with baking soda. Pour 1/2 cup into the drain, and follow with 2 cups of boiling water.
* Use one cup of baking soda for a medium sized room, and sprinkle on your carpets as a deodorizer. Allow to sit for half an hour, and then vacuum.
* Mix 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 cup vinegar and pour into your toilet bowl. Let it sit for a few minutes and scrub.
* For more tips on baking soda, visit 30 baking soda tips at About Green Living.

White Vinegar or Lemon Juice

* Use for stains, mildew and grease. Spray on, and then scrub. You can use a stiff brush, if necessary.
* Use 2 tablespoons of white vinegar (or undiluted lemon juice) mixed with a gallon of water to spray your windows and mirrors. Use newspaper to wipe off, to reduce streaking.
* To clean wood floors, mix 1/4 cup white vinegar with 3 3/4 cups water. Spray onto a cloth or towel until damp, and use to wipe floors and restore shine.

Club Soda

* Club soda can also be used in place of vinegar or lemon juice for cleaning glass.
* Use for spills on carpets. Remove any solid matter from the spill, then pour on club soda. Blot with a rag.

Plain Old Soap

* For a chemical free disinfectant, mix together 2 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of liquid soap, and 20-30 drops of tea tree oil.
* For carpet spot cleaning, mix 1/4 cup liquid soap with 1/3 cup water in your blender until foamy. Scrub the spot, and rinse with vinegar.

Betty asks…

Generally, which is more environmentally friendly? Eating Oysters or Soybean Products?

I heard that soybean production can be very environmentally destructive, while oysters are much more ecofriendly. Is this true? If so, or if not, why?
I can see most of you have not done any research when answering this question… That’s too bad.

The Expert answers:

Seeing as soy is a cultivated crop, and can feed millions of people, and oysters are marine animals growing in the sea, obviously soy can feed many more people that oysters can with far less energy used and stocks depleted ( it is easy to grow soy again but harder to harvest oysters. I admire that you’re trying to undermine the soy growing that goes on, but come on, if the fields of soy were used for humans, there would be enough food to go around, and no more deforestation would happen, and no more eco disastrous razing of rain forest.

Linda asks…

How did the organic/eco-friendly trend begin?

I’m writing a cause and effect research paper. The effect I’m doing is the ecofriendly and organic products across every market. However, I’m not entirely sure what sparked the whole trend. I was originally going to say that the high gas prices really caught everyone’s attention, but I’m having trouble finding that information in research. I’m also considering saiyng global warming started it- but that’s a little vague. Did anyone notice anything to that really sparked the trend? Your help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Edit:

I am looking for a cause in the past few years. Like the gas prices rising so everyone had to pay attention to what’s going on with the earth, etc.

The Expert answers:

Organic and certified organic has been around for decades. Robert Rodale was the US Pioneer of organic agriculture in the 1940’s through the 1960’s when he died. Among other things, he published the magazine Organic Farming and Gardening which today is known as Organic Gardening Magazine.

In 1979 certified organic came into being via a patchwork of around 45 organic certifying agencies, each with it’s own definition of what was organic farming/gardening. In 2002 the USDA took over control of what organic meant and came up with the national organic program (http://www.ams.usda.gov/nop) which took the patchwork of regulations around the USA and streamlined them into one national rule. When this happened the multinational corporations could now produce and sell organic items. And when this happened organic was taken out of the small farm and locally owned Health food stores and made national and international (In Europe IFOAM is the main certifying agency)

Culturally, the organic movement has its roots in the 1970’s hippie back to the land movement. This movement saw young people leaving the city to carve out their niche in the country growing their own food with out using chemicals and becoming self sufficient.

Now that organic has hit the big time and has been made mainstream local foods have become the next small thing as a backlash to the industrial organics the multinational corporations are bringing to a Wal-Mart near you.

The Expert answers:

My husband and I live on a farm in the desert. I do use the dryer, and vent the heat and moisture into the house, because it works in this particular environment. However we have many wool articles of clothing. My clothes rack is currently loaded with three wool shirts and about 40 pairs wool socks.

This is the one I use (the largest heavy duty model) :

http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=2793&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=clothes

I keep ours near our wood stove. Works great, and holds a suprising amount of laundry. If you have any sort of breeze, from a ceiling fan, or box fan, the clothes dry really fast (no heat needed).

Here are a couple of other items as well (I do not use these products):
http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=5327&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=laundry

http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=114&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=clothes

http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=6785&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=clothes

Lehman’s is where the Amish shop. You really cannot beat them for finding items that do not require electricity to use, or all natural “green” ways of doing things.

I love the Lehman’s catalog, and buy stuff for our farm all the time from them.

Maria asks…

Should vegans wear red?

Among other uses the Cochineal insect is used to make red pigment sometimes used in clothing. I did not even know this tell one ecofriendly company proudly informed its potential buyers that they used earth and insect dyes for all their clothing. After some research I found out that an incredible amount of these insects had to die just to make one garment.

http://www.veganwolf.com/animal_ingredients.htm

“CARMINE: Cochineal. Carminic Acid. E120. Red pigment from the crushed female cochineal insect. Reportedly 70,000 beetles may be killed to produce one pound of this red dye. Used in cosmetics, shampoos, red apple sauce and other foods. May cause allergic reactions. Alternatives: beet juice, no known toxicity (used in powders, rouges, shampoos); alkanet root, from the root of an herb like tree, no known toxicity (used as a red dye for inks, wines, lip balms, etc. and can be combined to make a copper or blue coloring).”
For those that doubt this clothing company states clearly that they use carmine as a dye for their clothing.

http://www.bohemiancloset.com/skcarmine.html
Here is the link to Tinctoria the exact company I found this information out about. In fact this link talks about there use of insects for their “Sunrise” color.

http://www.tinctoriadesigns.com/colors03.php
I don’t know what crusade Take Me Out to the Ballgame is on but yes the first link does use carmine in their clothing. In fact it is labeled, “Carmine Tiered Skirt”. Take a closer look next time. I mean no offense but please don’t attack me (we should not be doing this regardless), especially if you do not have the correct information.
Take Me Out to the Ballgame, I guess we’d just have to contact the maker to know for sure. I know the dye “carmine” is sometimes used in browns because often they have red mixed in them as well which is what the first skirt was shown as.

In any case it is all moot since I have proven that at least in some cases it is a practice being used. I’m sure most companies are not dying to tell you how they dye their clothing, especially big manufactures. All I am saying is this is an issue that needs to be investigated as a vegans clothings choice can literally be contributing to the killing of 10’s of thousands of insects. Maybe this is something you are not concerned with but for me this is horrific since I have taken such pains to go out of my way to not take life and the dye process kills many more animals than I would probable eat in my entire life.

The Expert answers:

I knew that cochineal food colouring was made from crushed beetle extract but I didn’t know they used it to dye clothes. You learn something new everyday and I am now mid 50s.
It is an interesting point you raise and perhaps clothes should carry a label like food does saying what chemicals and products go into making them. As vegans are against leather products I’m sure they would be against beetle dye.

The Expert answers:

You sound awesome! Obviously I don’t know you, but I can tell that you’re smart, articulate, conscientious, and so much more.

I’m in the same position of not having friends and always feeling like an outcast and whatnot. Being conscientious, as you seem to be, can really make you feel like you’re set apart from everyone else because you think about things more and care about things that others don’t understand as much. Just remember that you’re awesome and there’s nothing wrong with you; you just haven’t met the people you really click with yet.

Try to go places where you know you can meet people with similar interests. For instance, since you’re interested in the environment, there might be some sort of club or organization you could participate in where you could meet other young people like yourself. Just because the people at school don’t click as much with you doesn’t mean no one will. There are loads of people out there and you’ll find them if you keep a lookout for them. 🙂

Sandra asks…

I often feel left out like no one likes me?

Lizzie asks…

Isn’t spending a little more money on clothing that is fair trade/sweatshop free/eco-friendly worth it?

I’ve found quite a lot of designers that are sweatshop-free, made in the USA or UK, or use fair trade practices. (ie. stuff like People Tree, American Apparel, or Bibico, etc.) They’re only slightly more expensive than American made-for-a-dollar-by-exploiting-workers retai and just as stylish and practical for daily wear.
I’m a poor college student and I work hard for the little money I do have, but my parents seem to think my spending more money just because the clothing is ethical is “dumb”. But I’ve always felt very strongly about knowing where my possessions came from, and taking good care of them. I buy less clothing than other people too.
So is it “dumb” to spend more money on something just because it’s a bit more ethical?
Tim, that’s a completely illogical argument. It’s well documented that the ingredients and nutrition of McDonalds is not quality.
Though American Apparel has had workers rights issues, the companies I’m speaking of are certified organic, sweatshop-free, and/or fair trade. So there is no doubt to their legitimacy.

I need help making up a San Francisco Bingo board.?

I’m making up a Bingo card (like the old car version) as a silly surprise gift for a friend who lives there, but I know nothing about the city. Can anyone give me some fun ideas of things I could add to it so I don’t have to do stereotypical San Fran landmarks/people? I’m looking for clothing (like Buddy Holly glasses) and accessories (like ecofriendly shopping bag) and other things that you would see when walking the city on an average day. Richard asks…

What are some good ideas for eco-friendly advertisements?

to promote eco friendly fuel, what would get ur attention to actually use this product?

The Expert answers:

Eco friendly advertisements are popping out everywhere these days. If you want yours to get noticed you have to show your target audience from what they don’t see. Make a billboard with half of the billboard to be projected as a thick cloud of smoke emitted from regular fuel. Then other the other half show them a light side of the picture and it looks clean. Make a slogan to fit it across your billboard like: “We use it everyday, so why not switch to something lighter?” Then put the name of your company

Ken asks…

Are there any eco-friendly or vegetable-based foam sprays in a can?

…that can be used on small jobs to fill cracks and gaps. The only ones I have seen are the large kits. Other products in can form, like Great Stuff, are not the safest or environmentally friendly to use.

The Expert answers:

If you do a search on Yahoo or Google for the information that you are looking for, you can find it. Discovery Home Channel is becoming Planet Green in June, so if you go to their website, you may be able to find it there also.

Eco Friendly Pet Tips?

Hi everyone!

I am currently working on a newsletter for the vet clinic where I work and was looking for quick input. The theme is “Going Green: Eco friendly pet tips” and will cover natural foods, biodegradable litter, composting, and other environmentally friendly products on the market for pet care. Any suggestions on what you do to promote a green pet (cat, dog, fish, pocket pet, horse, anything!) would be greatly appreciated. I just recieved the assignment today and would love to hear from as many of you as possible as soon as possible.

Tell me what you do to go green. Even if it just using recycled materials, I would love to hear and share your suggestions (with your permission – so if you post, it may be published, so by posting here you are giving permission!) with our community, staff, and clientele.

Also – is there one big area of focus you are interested in as pet owners? While the major article will focus on tips in general, I have a secondary and tertiary article to address a particular area of eco friendly pet care in depth. What specific themes would you (as a pet owner) want to know more about? Would you rather read more about natural diets, grooming, waste disposal, specific products.. etc?

Thank you in advanced for all of your ideas and input. If any of you are interested in reading the final product, let me know and I will link you to it (it is posted online as well).

Just as a note so no one gets upset – I will be posting this question under general pet, dogs, and cats to make sure I can recieve a wider range of answers!

The Expert answers:

Order dogfancy, the magazine does a ecodog thing now. It talks about holism and etc. And discusses raw diets. It said the gross option to flush our dogs poop is good, but bio degredeable bags are better. It also discussed the use of chinese herbs. I don’t do much green pet wise, but if mhttp://www.earthdog.com/hemp-products/solid-hemp-liney dog needs a new collar i’m going with hemp or recycled tires!

Yikes! Not a pet lover are we. Just to note though, animals on thier own are perfectly eco freindly (as they are a natural part of the environment and ecology). What makes pets not eco friendly is the support they require from humans, meaning it is the owners that are not eco friendly. All I am asking is for other people’s opinions on eco friend ways for the owners to care for thier pets – reducing that impact on the environment. If there is nothing educational or informative to be gained, then don’t bother to answer.

The Expert answers:

I do know some dog owners that have them on veggie diets, much lower carbon footprint. Doesn’t work for cats.
Litter; sawdust pellets or better, shavings, from a local source, composted rather than thrown away, is the only green litter. You cant use the compost for the veg. Patch of course, but its fine for round trees and ornamentals.

The Expert answers:

Besides using biodegradable litter…I go one step further. I used to use Feline Pine until I discovered Wood Stove pellets are the same thing. It saves money and packaging (plastic bags). I compost as much fecal matter as I can, and while I don’t use it for the vegetable garden, it does wonders for the flowers and shrubbery.

I make most of my own cat food (generally raw). This saves on cans, cans, cans, and more cans. In fact, 99% of my cans are cat food cans. And then, out of the cat food cans, I made a passive solar heater (called a tin can or soda can heater…I don’t drink soda but I’m gonna feed the cats…) While there is an argument for dry food to save on packaging, dry food for cats is the cause of too many serious ailments in cats, urinary issues, diabetes, and kidney issues to name the most common.

I use oxy to clean. Hyperthyroidism and resp issues have been anecdotally linked to chemical cleansers, and many of them can be toxic to a cat. Oxy — good for cleaning, good for the cat odors and good for the environment.

As a cat owner (had dogs and horses, but just cats now), I would be interested in natural food choices and home made diets (including BARF, Prey, etc.), particularly home-made foods. It wasn’t until I saw an episode of Mike Rowe’s *Dirty Jobs* that it really hit home what went into most commercial cat food — dying and diseased animals, hooves beaks, intestines, “renderings,” the crap scraped off the slaughterhouse floor. Recycling and using all of an animal is good, but better it be compost and not pet food.

I would also be interested in home and homeopathic treatments and remedies. I have had excellent results with Apple Cider Vinegar, Metamucil, Baking Soda, Squash, Olive Oil, Flax Seed Oil…a whole range of in-the-pantry offerings for aiding health and treatment. I understand vets want to make a living, but I know my vet would prefer people not running to his office with every little thing that can be handled at home…besides we’re pretty rural out here and small animal vets are few and far between.

Another area of interest to me is vaccinations, or rather, over-vaccinating. There is a movement to do away with yearly rabies vaccinations and I fully support that. I’ve seen a lot of information recently on the problems that vaccinations can cause in an effort to prevent a possible illness.

I’m sorry this is so choppy…I saw your question just as I was about to close down and I have a few cats tapping their paws waiting for me to turn the covers down. I would be very interested in reading your newsletter, so please let me know the link.

Good luck. Sounds like a fun and rewarding project.

The Expert answers:

She could include solar panels on the roof. Also there are water heating panels that go on the roof too. They help make hot water using the heat from the sun. A watering system that reuses bath water and washing machine water to give to the plants in the garden. A rain water collection tank that gathers run-off from the downspouts, also for garden use. Tall shade trees on the south and west sides of the house block afternoon sunlight / heat and will help keep the house cooler during the day. Thick blanketing of insulation in the attic helps keep in the warmth during the winter.

I need help, please!!?

This question is for the ecofriendly know it all people…

I am a edgy person and I wear a lot of dark colors and I really hate it when my clothes fade. I was wondering if there are any eco friendly laundry products that prevents fading or have minimal effects to dark clothing.

Please give me good answers!

Thanks ^^

The Expert answers:

Not sure that’s possible… I might be wrong, but think by the nature of wear-and-tear, and simple washing (even by hand) your clothes will eventually fade.

However, maybe try looking at it from another angle? Instead of trying to preserve the base dye, look into eco-friendly dyes that you can use to resaturate the color once it has faded (assuming the garment/fabric istelf is still in decent condition).

Try this for a start:

“Planet” brand cleaning products… do you like them?

I just bought some dry dishwasher detergent and some laundry detergent that are from the “Planet” line… has anyone used these? I tried the dishwasher detergent and it doesn’t seem too great, BUT, I just moved to an apartment and I could just have a crappy dishwasher!

I want to use ecofriendly products… but I want ones that WORK!

Thoughts?

The Expert answers:

Hi there,
I’ve had the very same problem with automatic dishwasher cleansers. I did some research and found on Dr. Weil’s site that he too agreed that the natural auto dishwasher cleansers don’t work well.
I found I had to re-wash most of the time. Then of course you are wasting water and detergent. Not eco-friendly either.
Apparently for now, there is nothing that really works.

That being said, I found adding a bit of 20 Mule Team Borax (a natural cleanser) to the dish powder helps to clean very well. It’s also great for laundry and general cleaning. It can be found with laundry cleansers at your grocery store. It’s a large cardboard box and comes in a powder form.

For general cleaning I have found Method products to work very, very well. I found most natural cleansers left residue behind, these do not.
I buy mine at Target generally, though they seem to be available in more stores now as well.

I found this online regarding Borax for dishwashers.
“Recipe for Dishwasher Soap

Dishwasher soap is easy to make, and cost effective. I mix up a batch in an empty canister, and pour it in the dishwasher as needed.

Mix and use per dishwasher load:
1 Tablespoon Borax
1 Tablespoon Baking soda

OR

Mix equal parts Borax and Baking Soda, and add 2 Tablespoons per load. Increase proportion of soda for hard water. Use vinegar in the rinse cycle.
Lorraine

Finding the Right Combo

I personally tried using just baking soda, just borax, and a mixture of the two but none of those worked. What does work for me is mixing baking soda and borax with my dishwasher soap. I fill a container half full with the dishwasher soap then a quarter baking soda and quarter borax. I also use vinegar instead of Jet Dry in the rinse dispenser.
Janice

Extend Detergent

Oh yes! For several months, I used a simple combination of 1/2 Borax and 1/2 baking soda and found that my dishes came out sparkling and spot free. I liked this mix because I felt it was easier on our aerobic septic system than regular dish detergent alone. However, I discovered some of the dishes were not getting totally clean (I like to just throw them in the washer with only minimal scrubbing). I began to pour a tiny amount of Cascade (bought with a coupon, of course) in the dispenser then covered it with the other mix. I am very pleased with this combination and it takes only seconds to do! I add Borax to my powdered laundry detergent as well to make it last longer. With three children, Borax and baking soda have been major dollar stretchers to our budget.
KT”

Good luck!

Would you be more likely to buy a pair of mittens if they were Eco-friendly?

Just started a new website, where the artist finds old sweaters at thrift shops and goodwill and recycles them into new mittens.

http://www.recycledwarmth.com/mittenshopping.html

Would you be more likely to purchase these if the advertising said they were Ecofriendly?

Take a look at the mittens that are currently for sale, do they look like quality products?

The Expert answers:

I think they are a great idea – and I’d buy them!

I’d also want to know that they were made from recycled textiles from charity shops and how this made them environmentally friendly.

animal friendly products?

Does anybody know of beauty products (shampoo, skin care, cosmetics) that are not expensive and ecofriendly/ animal friendly?

The Expert answers:

There are lots of ecofriendly lines out there! Some of my favorites are Collective Wellbeing, Zia, Avalon Organics, Alba, J/A/S/O/N, Kiss My Face, Garden Botanika, and Beauty Without Cruelty. There are still lots out there though, try your local food co-op (if there is one) or even some drug/food stores have an organic section that will carry these lines. Hope this helps!

Help! I have lots of beads and I don’t know what to make out of them!?

I don’t want to give away my beads or throw them out because I support the ecofriendly enviroment and I was wondering if you could suggest me some ideas or websites which would be great on what I can make out of beads. I also want to use them to put them on my clothes but I need some nice designs for that as well. Thankyou.

The Expert answers:

If you like beads with your clothing, why not make a belt? The first link below shows several long narrow patterns which could be used for belts, guitar straps, purse straps, hat bands, barrettes or cuff bracelets using seed beads. You can use a loom or weave by hand (see further links below). You can even create your own pattern using the graph paper and grids found on the first website.

I had a small purse I really loved and the strap broke so I made a beaded strap to replace it. If you make a strap for a larger purse, you just have to be careful not to put anything heavy in it. In fact you could even make a purse entirely from beads. Or a case for a cellular phone, MP3 player or eyeglasses.

If your beads are larger, you could incorporate them into a macrame project–even a belt if you like stuff from the 1970’s (I hear they’re making a comeback!).

You can incorporate beads into knitted and crocheted works, cross stitch, embroidery, etc. You can add netting or fringe to the edge of a fabric or a lampshade. You can also make beaded beads.

Check your public library for books too.

Have fun!

Do soap pods really clean clothes?

They’re ecofriendly, reusable, and work out cheaper than detergent. But how effective are they? And what tree do they come from?

Daniel asks…

How can a 14 year old make money if they are not allowed to do chores for neighbors and use survey sites?

My parents are afraid of lawsuits if I damage any personal property, and our neighborhood is rough, not the best place for me to do chores, even for trusted neighbors, plus my parents don’t want me to get hurt. I’m sick of all those survey sites and ended up costing my family 75$ totally by accident. I was thinking of making eco/animal friendly cosmetics, or fix clothing , DIY projects and sell them, etc but I don’t know if I will make any money from it. I am saving up for a m44 Soviet Moison-Nagat or however its spelled, as a beginning shooters gun, of course after practicing with a pellet gun, and a dirt bike. So far I’ve got 75 dollars and need about 2500 more.
We have too many thieves in our neighbor hood, gangs, and pedophiles (I’m a girl).
My parents do but we’re having horrible financial problems, my parents can’t even pay me the $75 they owe me for a check they stole from me and some chores.
I’m sick of all survey sites period. We lost the money filling out an offer.

The Expert answers:

There are many claims that they will give you hundreds of dollors for nothing. Believe me they are all scam and you will only end up losing your time. There are some good sites which pay. Even though the pay is less, this site is a good one. I can assure you as I am being paid every month a small amount.

Steven asks…

How can I freshen up the scent of clothes on my indoor clothesline?

Everyone talks about how great air-dried clothes smell, but our indoor line-dried clothes don’t smell nice. They have a “wet” sort of smell which is still faintly there even when they’re dry.

Help?

(We’re trying to be ecofriendly and air-dry our clothes, but we can only try indoors since by the house lease we’re not allowed any outdoor lines/racks. The line isn’t in the basement, it’s in a spare room upstairs, so I am not sure why clothes have that damp smell.)

The Expert answers:

Defiantly use fabric softener, I love Downy. Then, after the clothes are dry put them in the dryer with a dryer sheet. You will only need to put them in for 5 minutes. They heat will soften the fibers and help release the smell of the fabric softener.

Maria asks…

Is there a way that I can soften clothes without fabric softener?

My mum is a huge ecological person and so doesn’t use fabric softener except when necessary, just regular ecofriendly washing powder when washing clothes, and she doesn’t dry clothes in the drier but she hangs them up on the washing line in our garden.

Anyway, this doesn’t bother me, except when my gorgeous linen hungarian blouse isn’t the same after she washed it. It is now all stiff and feels horrible to touch, it goes through me. Is there any way that I can get the fabric back to it’s usual soft and light feeling? Could I like, bathe it in fabric softener and water, would that work?

Any ideas would be lovely, thankyou. I don’t know a lot about washing clothes, so any help would be great xx

The Expert answers:

You could ask mom if she would at least use 1/2 cup of vinegar in the rinse water. That’s natural. It may help soften up your blouse. It won’t smell of it once dried. But, you could do what you say. Put your wet blouse in a basin that has water and softener in it. Only use a tsp. Or so of softener in a basin of water. But, to be honest. Even though I do use softener, the clothes I hang out to dry are still a bit stiff. That’s why I always put towels in the dryer.

I have sensitive skin and so I need something with no perfume, but I want to buy an ecofriendly soap with no phosphates or toxic things in it. I also want to buy deodorant with no aluminumm in it. Where can I buy these products?

The Expert answers:

Dr Bronner’s. Jason is not organic despite their claims. They use chemicals in their products that are not natural. They can do this since there is no organic standard for soap/cosmetics.

Dr Bronner’s is and always has been 100% pure and natural and uses all certified organic ingredients

see http://www.organicconsumers.org for more about organic cosmetics

eco friendly transportation from over seas?

what are some ways a company who have been burning coal and other fossil fuels for fuel to transport their product from over seas can change to become eco friendly and still transport their products from over sea but not use fuel or coal? in this case providing a clean and not so expensive way of transporting.

The Expert answers:

You could probably put on solar panels on the ships, and maybe hook up the ships to a wind turbine when in port, and that would cut down the needed fossil fuels, but I don’t know of a way to completely get rid of fossil fuels entirely

Where can i get funding for my small green/eco friendly business?

I have started working on an online store called YourGreenApple.com that sells eco friendly apple products. the startup costs wouldnt be huge (only around 3k-10k depending on how big i want to start my stock) but i cant afford that out of my own pocket. i know that with the Reinvestment act that was passed there are lots of grants available for small startups, and on top of that my business is fully green, so i’ve heard that there are more grants for companies like that as well.

i’d like to know where i should go to inquire about these types of grants.

thanks for reading!

The Expert answers:

There are no government grants for commercial business.

You can approach venture capitalists for a grants from another company.

However, you only need a couple of bucks, a personal loan would be easier. Generally capitalist are looking for things in the millions, not a couple weeks pays.

Looking for some truly eco friendly cosmetic companies?

I have been doing some searching on the net, and I haven’t had much luck finding many small eco friendly cosmetic companies. I am not looking for some mass marketed makeup that comes in a green box. I am more interested in smaller companies that sell organic/fair trade products

The Expert answers:

Nvey Eco is a certified organic cosmetic brand. You could give it a try. I like their eye shadow palletes 🙂 Mind you, they are a little pricey, but I guess it all depends on what you want to buy. Heres their website.
