Your Questions About Green Living

Michael asks…

Wardrobe malfunction!?

Kay, so i am trying to become more eco friendly and i just joined the animal rights club. but now i have a problem. i have no idea what kinds of clothes will fit my new lifestyle so my question is what can i wear that is eco and animal freindly. (FYI- i love the colors black, red, purple, basically dark colors and i love hot topic!)

The Expert answers:

Basically anything cotton

Mary asks…

Does this bother anyone else?

Okay, so I was at Old Navy the other day with my mom, and we were paying and the guy gave us the clothes with the hangers still on.
And my mom, being the super eco friendly person she is, said “Oh we don’t need the hangers, you can have them back. I’m sure you’ll reuse them”
And the guy looked at her like she was crazy and said, “Oh no, we don’t reuse them, we just throw them away. We don’t have a recycling system”
And my mom was like “thats just so sad”
And the guy was like “I know, but what can you do?”

I was thinking, seriously buddy, is it that hard to use the same hangers when you get new clothes in? It would save SO much plastic! And I hate how they sell all these shirts that say save the earth and stuff, and I had actually bought a bag from there that said “Peace, Love, Recycle”
its completely hypocritical. All these stores are selling all these bags and shirts with earth friendly slogans, and they just continue on killing the earth when its so easy to change a few things to be more green

and there was a question on here once that some teenage girl posted, that was like “Do you guys recycle? I don’t. My friends and I do exactly the opposite. Its so stupid and uncool” etc, etc. Like hello, YOU are going to be the one living in this world!

sorry about that little rant, I’m just really annoyed and frustrated. Its like, no matter what you do, there are always more people and bigger companies who are ruining it all. Does this bug anyone else, or am I just crazy.

UGH. it just kills me.
PocketBean: because we don’t need them! And we always figured, up until now, that is, that stores took them and reused them. For example, Target always keeps the hangers and reuses them, they don’t let you take them. We figured they’re be going to better use there. Apparently not.

The Expert answers:

I know, it’s really unfair. I think some people are just ignorant and careless 🙁
That makes me sad

Donna asks…

How do I meet and befriend Hipsters in High School?

I’m moving to a neighboring school district next year. My current district is full of stuck up, snobby, conformist brats that only can think about themselves. The school I’m moving to is average, with diversity and normal income people. I already know some people who go here (all really nice) which is good. I want to take this opportunity to be myself: artistic, talky, fun, crazy, loves volunteer work, ecofriendly, want to be a vegetarian, doesn’t mind second hand clothes, in other words a hipster (except I love pop, hip-hop, and rap). How do I meet and befriend Hipsters in my new high school?

The Expert answers:

No, command…. She gave that

Donald asks…

What is the best “green” laundry detergent?

I’m looking for the the best ecofriendly laundry detergent that I can find.

My criteria are:
-Does it get laundry looking and smelling clean? Stains will get pre-treated, but does it work well on “general soil”?

-Will it work in an older, non-HE washer until we can get a newer one?

-Can it get the job done without fading clothes?

-Is the company genuinely ecologically responsible, not just jumping on the “green” bandwagon?

Would be a bonus if it was readily available (we use Alice.com) and affordable.

We’ve tried Method, which we like OK.
We’ve also tried Sun and Earth, but find the citrus oil smell and feel a little unappealing, even after clothes are rinsed and dried.

And, most recently, we’re using Grab Green powder pods. I like the convenience of these, but the 2-3 pods needed for a large, non-HE load is not economical, and the strong soda ash odor as clothes are washing is unpleasant.

Any other suggestions?

THANKS!

The Expert answers:

I started using green laundry products when I discovered that they were recommended over traditional detergents for cloth diapers. I figured if they can clean poop, they can clean most anything! Check out this chart to give you some ideas: http://www.diaperjungle.com/detergent-chart.html

I’ve used Charlie Soap and find that their small powdered bag does something like 80 loads. Not only are the ingredients earth friendly, but because it is powdered and so concentrated it doesn’t have nearly the carbon footprint due to its smaller shipping weight. I’ve been using BioKleen lately and am very satisfied with it as well. I’ve also used Seventh Generation and Method successfully, but prefer to support smaller companies. As I understand, Method just came out w/ a new version of their laundry detergent, so it might be worth another try. I can’t say I have a favorite at this point, but these are all good choices. I have Mountain Green on order, so will be trying that next and have also been hearing great things about soap nuts.

This is a little off topic, but wash in cold water. That’s one of the biggest ways you can help the environment and cut down on your energy consumption. Good luck and good for you for using green products!

Robert asks…

Why are they doing this!? Am I selfish?! Am I wrong?!?

They’re bribing me to eat meat with 100 dollars a week, i want stuff so bad, I need new clothes, i want extensions, I want to take Italian courses, get a new phone, I want all these stuff and they know it
Meat makes you gain protien which means muscle, not eating meat is somethign that made me happy, somethign that I called my own, I loved the fact that I didn’t have to worry with bulking up or that I was beign ecofriendly with no eating meat, they forced me to eat fish which I felt rotten for doingso after and now they’re bribeing me to eat meat with money, money that I want so bad, I want stuff so much, I want to get the food at the health store I like, I want my extensions, I want to take a course in learning Italian, I tried gettign a job but I didn’t work out (I’m only 15, 16 in sept) they know I want these things and now told me they’ll give me money if i changed me eating habits, I did try to change my eating habits for them, I stopped going vegan and went vegetarien and adde
d fish back into my diet, I ate what they wanted to I STOPPED EATING ALL THE HEALTHY FOODS AND ATE AT FAST FOOD RESTURANTES FOR THEM TO MAKE THEM HAPPY!!!!! AND NOW THEY WANT ME TO EAT MEAT!!!!!! EVEN AFTER I ATE THAT JUNK FOOD AND FELT BAD AFTER THEY STILL COMPLAINED ABOUT MY EATING HABITS, I don’t know what else to do what the hell to say, vegetarien is healthier over-all, it makes me happy, why can’t they accept that, Am I wrong?! I’ve tried to compramise every fucking thing, I ate things I hated, I CARE about my weight and what I put into my body why is that usch a problem for them to understand, what’s wrong with me being healthier??!! …God. I’m cryign I’m so fustrated, why make me eat stuff I don’t like when vegeatiren makes me happy
I have, I’ve tried, books, offerign to go to a nurtienist, health food stores, asked the doctor
they won’t listen
they want me to eat meat and will stop at nothing

The Expert answers:

Why on earth do you believe that eating meat makes you bulk up or put on muscle? Nothing could be further from the truth.

Protein supports all the vital functions of your body, including heart and lungs.

No one ever put on muscle by eating meat alone. It’s just not physiologically possible. It’s like saying you’ll grow feathers if you eat chicken.

Fish is an excellent source of Omega 3’s, healthy for the heart and helps feed the brain. Babies whose mothers eat fish have shown to develop faster than babies whose mothers did not eat fish.

That said, if you choose to be a vegan, that is your business. But do it for the right reasons!

If you want to go the vegan route, you need to prove to your parents that your are responsible and can assure that you take in the right types of foods to be healthy. Go to the library and check out books. Go to the store with your mother and ask her to buy various nut butters, beans, and soy based products that you will need. Perhaps if they see you are going about it the right way, they will feel better about your decision.

Good luck!

washing clothes & sweat stains?

which clothes do you wash in cold water, hot/cold, and hot?
i know if you don’t wash in hot water it’s more ecofriendly. i usually keep my washer on hot/cold…

also, my dad is a mail carrier and wears white t’s under his uniform shirt, and they have sweat stains. i was wondering how i can help him get rid of them? also, my brother has some sweat stains on the underarms of his shirts, so i’d like to help him out also 🙂 some of his shirts have designs on them, so i haven’t tried bleach on them bc i fear it will mess up the design, and if i just put it on the armpits i’m afraid the armpits will end up brighter than the rest of the shirt, lol.
thanks! 🙂

The Expert answers:

Put some lemon juice on them, it works very well with sweat stains and just plain stains also.

Nancy asks…

cloth diapers?

I take care of a tiny baby, making alot of descions and stuff. I am a totally green girl and into eco friendly living. Plus, cloth diapers are cheaper. I know i know, there is laundry… For those of you who have used cloth diapers, What did you think? Did the baby ever wet their clothes? Is it worth it?

The Expert answers:

I use cloth diapers for my baby and have since home from the hospital – i have had no blowouts or leaks with them, which i did have with the disposables in the hospital and using the rest of them when i got home –

i have never had my babys clothes to get wet, except for when she was just home, and i did not have any covers that would fit her and not touch her cord – i just did it the old fashioned way and didn’t use a cover until i found some in her size –

i love them – they are super easy, super cheap, and better for my baby – i use the dry pail method – toss the wet ones in the pail – for the poopy ones, just dump the waste in the toilet and flush then toss in pail – when i do diapers, i rinse the poopy ones first – then just wash normally – you dont have to dunk in toilet – and i dont like the idea of the wet pail method as they sit in water constantly – you have to change the water daily – just not for me – the dry pail method does not stink, i use a foot pedal, flip top garbage pail with a garbage bag for liner – when gets full or usually every other day i do diapers – it takes no longer than regular laundry to do –

it is worth it to me, as i already would have spent in wipes and disposables what i have spent for cloth – and my baby is only 4.5 mos – i use cloth wipes as well –

another bonus and cost saving factor for me – is her clothes – with ‘cloth diaper butt’ being quite a bit larger than disposables you have to go up a couple of sizes – i am not a fanatical clothes horse and i think my baby looks cute in shorts and pants a little too big – so i just buy toddler sizes (in shorts or capris, pants are too long) – not only is she wearing now – she can wear after potty training as well – (the diaper keeps the waist from falling down, and the rest of the room is taken up with the diaper) – but those are the prefolds with a cover

so all in all – yes, to me, it is WELL worth it

Maria asks…

best smelling “green” detergent?

i am looking for a detergent and liquid fabric softener ( preferably the same scent) that’s eco friendly and smells fresh and clean.i was going to try seventh generation but my boyfriend and i both thought it smelled AWFUL so i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? if it comes down to it i would at least like to find a detergent and fabric softener that at least smells clean and fresh and leaves clothes soft, if no one has any greener suggestions.

The Expert answers:

Because of a recent allergy to my normal brand, I have had to start using the one by Clorox. It is cheap, but surprisingly it does a nice job. I use to use TIDE (NOT green), but tried the SPORT TIDE and broke out like crazy, so now anything with perfume irritates it. Even original TIDE. I was NOT looking forward to using one, but tried it and it works great, and I have a toddler…lol. I was SHOCKED by the price, and leary if it would work. It is by Clorox and called Clorox GREEN WORKS. They have a free and a scented one. I have never tried the scented one, but even the free one leaves my clothes smelling clean. I do miss my scented one, but give this a try. It is like $3 a bottle and it DOES work. I only tried this one, because I do not like any products by ALL or Arm and Hammer, and this was the only other free product they had in stock.

Smells give ne migraines, so i’m looking for a multi purpose cleaning spray that doesn’t smell.
Lots of people recommend eco friendly products, but some of these still smell.
Can anyone suggest anything that will clean my kitchen surfaces, but won’t give me a headache.

Which is the right university course I should take?

I’m interested on helping the environment and possibly creating eco friendly products or designing more eco friendly homes. Which university course(s) should I take? Also I’m looking at Ontario universities. Thank you.

What are the best organic face creams for anti-aging?

I’m going green and wanted to change my cosmetics to more ecofriendly products. I get dark circles under my eyes are there any organic face creams that can help with that? What should I try?

The Expert answers:

I suffer from dark under eye circles too. Semeli Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream is the best organic eye cream. It’s loaded with Vitamin K1 to increase circulation in the area below the eye. I’ve been using it for 8 months now and it works. They have a whole line of moisturizing face creams made with greek olive oil and vitamins. Good stuff 🙂

Donna asks…

What are some eco friendly ideas?

what are some imaginitive products or ideas that people can make? SOmething that is not on the market to day but can be invented.

The Expert answers:

There are many things you can do.

Recycle as much as possible

Take shorter showers and baths

Dont water your lawn in the winter

Use cold water for your laundry.(There are laundry powders that do just as a good job with cold water than warm water.

Buy green products such as recycled paper, cardboard and plastic

Switch to a green source of energy(solar, wind, geothermal)

Use the new Belair, Nob Hill Foods, and Rayleys bag

Use eco firendly lightbulbs

Encourage others to do the same
Set an example for others

Ruth asks…

What are some of the lifestyle changes that we can make to stop global warming?

What is the term of someone who is living a green, eco-friendly life?

Ok, I am french and do not know the correct term in English.
I recycle, use green products, recycle rain water, I compost, ect ect… is there a name for someone who does these things? Eco-…. ?

🙁 help? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !

The Expert answers:

I don’t think there is a simple term. Perhaps eco-enthusiast, or that you are eco-aware

If you are an activist, someone who who goes on marches and campaigns on green issues – then you could be called an eco warrior or an eco-activist.

If a tabloid newspaper wanted to be sarcastic and insulting they would call you a “tree hugger”.

Jenny asks…

Writing a guide. What would you want to see in a Natural Remedy Guide?

My husband and I opened an eBay store selling Eco Friendly products, natural remedies for health conditions, essential oils, and detox bath salts. I am in the process of writing a guide about Natural Remedies. I am stuck, I would like to know what others would like to read in a guide about Natural Remedies. Let me know what you would want to know.
Thanks

The Expert answers:

You could just list general concerns (in terms that the FDA doesn’t have issues with) and what herbs can help those concerns.
For example, have a “joint health” topic and include Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid, Microlactin, etc, etc. Don’t make claims about Arthritis, inflammation, or other joint problems.

I would suggest several general categories for major concerns like that. You may want to use a catalog or order guide from an herb/vitamin company, as they typically have acceptable language and have their products categorized. However, on the flip side, if eBay or (by some bad turn of luck) the FDA wants you to verify what you’re saying in the guide, you may have trouble if you don’t have access to the proof those companies would have…. But that’s not likely to happen, honestly.
Just make sure you verify the facts you’re putting into the guide and you should be fine. LMK if you have any other questions on this

Daniel asks…

Why Is the government Trying to prove this to us?

2 things.

Why are normal humans blamed for pollution when factories make x100 more pollution than we make in a day.
(They sell us ecofriendly products, where the engergy that was put it to making the produck *factories* is way more phenominal)

2. I’ve heard that the Milk commercials have a deeper meaning to them.
I couldn’t help wonder that “Never stop drinking milk” was a very “pushy” setence in the commercials. Why are we (humans) the only animals that drink milk after there childhood?

The Expert answers:

You’re confusing government with businesses. These are not examples of government, as governments don’t sell us products, businesses do.

The “eco-friendly” products are because marketing experts found that people respond to environmental messages. So businesses market their products as “green” to get more people to buy. The same is true for milk. It’s an ad campaign put forward by the Dairy Association to get people to consume more milk.

Don’t blame government for business marketing tactics.

Betty asks…

Why isn’t marijuana legal?

It’s not bad for you at all! It doesn’t kill brain cells, doesn’t cause cancer, has never killed someone or made them act violent, does not mess with your lung compacity, and It’s less addictive than alcohol or cigarettes. It has been proved to help cope/cure illness’s
And everything Rick Simpson said about it on phenixtears is true! I’ve witnessed the hemp oil being used and have seen the great results.

Also it can be turned into many things like clothes and paper, and its more eco friendly to be used as paper than trees.
Also it Canada had it legalized this year it could have brought in a tax profit of around 13billion dollars.

I don’t get how alcohol and cigarettes are legal if they’re so bad for you, yet marijuana which is more durable and doesn’t cause health problems is illegal.
the govt must be really f***ing stupid if he doesn’t want 13Billion+ everyyear
F*** you jimmy, watch the marijuana documentary, it is not a gateway drug you unintelligent f***. People do stuff by their own choice, the drug doesn’t make you do that. you idiot
crash your an idiot aswell
Cali- your a great person, and yeah i dont drink because i do messed up things when i do, and i dont smoke tabacco products, only marijuana with pure hemp bob marley papers
shut up chris, humans have cannaboid recepters in their brain. We’re meant to comsume cannibis
bw022 you dumb f***ing cun* it was on CTV news that it could have brought in 13B

The Expert answers:

I totally agree with you. Someone said its a gateway drug- bullshit. You could say the same thing about cigs and beer. I know PLENTY of people that ONLY smoke and don’ even drink or won’t even touch tobacco because its so much more harmful than marijuana. I know health freaks that won’t do anything except for smoke a little weed here and there. It’s all about politics. I do think the time to legalize is near though. It could really help us with this money crisis we’re in.

@ Crash- obviously if it’s asked 20 times a day then its an issue that NEEDS to be confronted! Thanks for making that point for us. Tell it to your congressman- done that. THIS NEEDS TO BE HEARD A MILLION TIMES UNTIL SOMETHING IS CHANGED. No one cares if it gets on your little, insignificant nerves, crash. Don’t like it? Don’t read it. Perhaps you should invest in a real life (a real job maybe?) if you’re on here every single day and are able to see this posted 20 times a day. Seriously, I’d be embarrassed that I even knew that tid bit of info. Go spread misery somewhere else, loser.

Donna asks…

What’s the difference?

What is the difference between organic, ecofriendly, recycled, and all-natural if you are referring to clothes?

ORGANIC IS GROAN IN DIRT WITHOUT CHEMICALS, RECYCLED IS MADE FROM USED INGREDIENTS AND NATURAL IS FROM CLOTH OR THREAD. ECO-FRIENDLY= UNKNOWN.

Laura asks…

Do vegetarians HAVE to be environmentally friendly?

Some vegetarians drive decent cars.

For some reason, this suprises some people who expect us to drive a eco-warrier shopping trolley powered by wheat or something

Why is that ?

I know a few veggies in my circle of contacts with decent cars

Criticism of leather interior i can understand.

why do so many people assume vegetarianism comes with a lot of other beliefs ?

You would think we all have cloned views on environment, religion, lifestyle, clothing, capitalism, politics….

Views on the environment are irrelavent to this question, i’m asking about “assumptions”

This question is prompted by someone last night who couldn’t understand why i didn’t eat meat yet drove a decent car
exfst, i understand your point – well made.

I can see where the assumptions come from, but does that extend to people being right to crticise me because i don’t meet thier pre-concieved stereotype ?

Somehow, i got the impression he thought i wasn’t really a veggie because my car produces lots of BHP

Has anyone ever had an allergic reaction to laundry detergent?

I recently switched from Tide to an ecofriendly laundry detergent. I washed everything from my clothes to my pillow cases and bed sheets. After a few days, I developed itchy little bumps all over my body. And what’s worst is my face also broke out in tiny little bumps that itch like crazy. When I wake up in the morning, my eyes are so swollen that I look like someone beat me up. It’s that bad.

Has anyone ever experienced this? And if so, can you tell me how long it took for your rash to go away? Please share.

The Expert answers:

YES! But i got it from a foreign brand called ALAS or something like that, my body got really red and kinda swelly but i took a benadryl and it totally helped but the redness took about 3-4 days to go away completely.

Sorry to break the news but youre gonna have to re-wash EVERYTHING that you washed with that detergent! Good luck

Richard asks…

I am Going Green and need help?

I am in high school. Next year i have decided to make a statement that all you need to survive is God, and all natural things. You don’t need a bf, crap on your face, bad music, and everything media has to offer. I buy my own clothes and stuff and I need to find a place to find cute clothes that are made of all natural fabrics, ecofriendly, or recycled. It is extremely hard to find things that are cute and not expensive…I am not a fan of going to school in a paper bag, and I need clothes for the new school year, also school supplies and everyday items. Any ideas where I could find these things online?

The Expert answers:

Try the following websites, they have all sorts of ideas etc. On going green.

Buying green clothes usually means buying more expensive clothes because the makers of the cloth have been paid a fair price for their material and the clothes have not been made in sweat shops where the workers are not children and they are paid a living wage. One way to save money and be more green is to buy clothes from Thrift shops as you are recycling them.

Unfortunately going green often does not mean the cheapest option for the same reasons as with clothes and that until these products become the norm and have mass sales they are more expensive to produce.

Your Questions About Green Living

George asks…

Whats the difference between organic, all-natural, and eco-friendly? ?

You see so many products these days with these titles, you cant tell the difference. So whats the difference? And which one is best?

The Expert answers:

Organic has regulations behind it. Organic food must be grown on farms that have been certified by the USDA (in the USA, in other countries other certifications are used) To be certified a farmer must avoid all synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fungicides but can use organic approved ‘cides and have done so for 3 years. The farmer must also have a soil improvement plan in place that does not use synthetic fertilizers. A crop rotation plan must also be used. The farmer must record all in puts used on the farm (an input is anything used on/in the soil such as fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, etc..) as to where on the farm it was used and where it came from and if it is a certified organic input. Once a year the farmer must send in to the USDA an application that lists everything used, farm plan, etc with hundreds of dollars and waits for the farm to be inspected. If the farm passes inspection than they are granted organic certification.

All-Natural and eco-friendly have no such certification programs so literally anything can be given those tags

I’d say organic is better as there is oversight.

Mary asks…

Do you think my niche in interior design for children with green design a good specialty?

I have an business in interior design and decorative painting. I have recently decided to specialize in children’s decor from the nursery to teen-age retreat with an emphasis on ecofriendly products that are organic and all natural. I am a full service design studio, but wanted to be set apart from the rest. What do you think?

The Expert answers:

This is a smart marketing move. The group probably most concerned with the environment are the parents of your target group and eco-friendly is no longer a fad or a trend but a part of our everyday lives.

Greenspun lives.

Donna asks…

How to make a compound for school project?

I have to make a compund but we have to use eco friendly products. So we cannot use styrofoam balls. We need something round. Any ideas?

The Expert answers:

Ping pong balls.

Linda asks…

What would you do in this ethical dilemma?

Sierra Club lobbies for stricter antipollution regulations, pushes companies to use more ecofriendly products and techniques, and leads wilderness trips to promote appreciation for nature.

To raise money for its mission, the not for profit business began licensing its logo for a wide array of products. They have sold T-Shirts, Coffee mugs, and more. Now a company has approached Sierra Club about manufacturing a bed cover that will have organic cotton and vegetable dyes. However, the bed has synthetic fibers to keep the cover together thus kind of going against the mission. The bed cover will result in a much greater profit, would you recommend that the bed cover be licensed?

The Expert answers:

Isn’t that hypocritical to have this licensed?

I have a 2 yr old that crawls and jumps all over so I’m concerned about the residue left behind by flea bombs. Not a bad infestation (a few jump in the bowl of water w/light @ night)but I don’t want it to turn into one.Our dog was given flea baths and has the chemical on him so he’s fine…

We are leaving on vacation for 2 wks and were considering flea bombing the house as we leave.Don’t want a takeover while we’re gone!I’m concerned about the chemical residue left on everything like clothing bedding dishware etc… (we’d take the toys all out of the house)etc what is the best protocol or any alternative ideas or solutions?

The Expert answers:

Use dawn dishwashing soap on your dog if he has fleas on him. Vacuum every day with flea powder to get fleas of the carpet

Do You Like The New “Hipster” Trend?

To sum it all up in a basic sense, a “Hipster” is a witty smartass who is against anything popular or mainstream. As far as style goes, it usually consist of plaid, certain glasses, side-swept hair, tight jeans, and converse or some type of non-label clothing. Small assets to the Hipster personality is usually drinking a lot of coffee, listening to bands no ones heard of, hating bands that everyones heard of, being sarcastic and smart, riding bicycles instead of driving, some are ecofriendly, most are very skinny.

If you disagree with the above, then go **** yourself.

What do you think of the new trend?

BQ: Is this where all the “Emo” kids went when they got to college?

http://www.wikihow.com/Be-a-Hipster

The Expert answers:

Yeah hipster isn’t really going against mainstream because they’re conforming to a group of popularised people, which makes them mainstream really…
Trends altogether are 100% bullcrap…just be yourself, how hard can it possibly be for those people to do that.

Lizzie asks…

About how much do closet organizational systems cost?

I have two closets. The first is rather small and holds my suitcases, book bags, totes…etc. as well as my accessories such as scarves and hosiery. The second is a walk in closet that holds my clothing. I’ve been thinking about having someone come in and install an organizational system/help me organize my closets as there never seems to be enough room for all my stuff.
I’m not really concerned about using ecofriendly materials…my main concern is the cost. Would anyone who has had one of these systems installed before give me some information about the cost? I’m basically looking for a general idea of what a project like this would run me.
Please no links/ads. and no chat speak.
Thanks in advance.

The Expert answers:

Check with your local home improvement stores. I know Home Depot does that here. They can help you design the space and install it and give you an accurate quote.
I’ve installed one of their shelving kits (around $40 each at the time) in several closets in my home. The kit fits a wall 5 to 8 feet long.

John asks…

help with a kids grade five project???

shes got to make a diagram of a eco friendly house.. outdoor and indoor.. e.g a clothe line in the backyard saving energy from using the dryer.. i need a list of other things to make it a eco friendly house.. thanks
she’s got to be able to make these things.. by using a big cardboard box as the house and to be able to put this all in the house and or outside for everyone to understand what it all is..

The Expert answers:

Fifth grade kid huh?
Big windows to let in more natural light
having a small rectangular slot cut out on top of the wall so hot air escapes through it and cold air will replace it from windows.
Rain water harvesting. Rain water that collects on the terrace or that trickle down ur inclined roof can be used for domestic purposes.
Man fifth grade is tough..
I can think of excercise cycles that also serve as a generator, wind turbines, solar heater, solar cooker, gobar gas generators etc.. But kids that age will find it hard to comprehend.

How to help people in poverty when buying clothes… ?

I am in need of some new clothes… I am trying to be more Eco friendly and thinking about others. I hate wasting food etc. because I know there are people who need it. I saw a commercial for (I think) PayLess shoes and they said if you bought one pair then another pair would be donated to a needy child and I thought that if they did this with shoes where could I find places/sites that do this with all clothes….

My question is: What are these sites?
also… I am giving my clothes to good will but I wear my clothes so much that they have holes in them, accidentally get bleached, or stained up because of my sloppy cooking so its hard to even donate them

The Expert answers:

Well, I believe the best thing to do is to not buy clothes in exchange for giving clothes, but simply donating them to the GoodWill. :]

Seventh generation cleaning and laundry products?

have any of you used them and do you think they work well? the laundry detergent & softner I am currently using is OK but I am not impressed with the fabric softner. I have well water, very hard water, and the softner isn’t very effective compared to non-eco/animal friendly products

The Expert answers:

I’m so not impressed with 7th generation. Mainly because their products are high in price, and they don’t sell concentrate…meaning more plastic bottle waste in our environment. I shop only from Melaleuca. Best health and wellness company out there. Their products beat the pants off of the name brands, and they are cheaper because they are so concentrated. They also sell products that are to be used in conjunction with reusable spray bottle. Saving our earth! Love them!!!

Jenny asks…

are there any environmental laws that regulate corporations/products?

canadian laws preferably that regulate how ecofriendly a product has to be?

The Expert answers:

Of course. There are all sorts of pollution controls in place to regulate corporations.

Lisa asks…

What’s an effective way to advertise an eco-friendly online store?

We’ve opened up an online store of green products – called http://www.CraftedNaturally.com Though I have received some orders – I am not getting as much as I would prefer. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The Expert answers:

Start a blog, like on blogspot.com or livejournal.com and get people to follow you. Post about your shop and offer exclusive promotions.

Get a twitter, facebook, myspace and invest time into it.

Make some business cards and coupons and pass it out to all your friends. Tell your friends to pass it out to their friends.

Go to local boutiques and ask them if they would like to sell your items. If not, ask them if you can leave some of your business cards there.

If you or someone you know goes to school, post a flyer/postcard around the school.

Buy some adspace on facebook, google adwords, or project wonderful.

Get creative. There are lots of things you can do to promote your shop. Not everything works for everyone. You got to invest into as much time marketing as you are making your items when you first start out.

Michael asks…

what are some ideas to re-invent an (everyday) product to make it more ECO friendly?

ex. like a solar powered ipod…or they might have tht

The Expert answers:

Well, there are some things that we ARE reinventing.

Computers already use MUCH MUCH less power than they did 15 or 20 years ago, and you get much more bang for the buck.

You will see products like the I-Pod Nano and shuffle become more popular than other items, wearable technology. Eventually this technology will power off of our movement and our own electrical output (humans create a small electrical charge ourselves), machines could be made to run on that.

Before that however you will see clothing with integrated solar fibers or some such, where your coat generates 2 or 3 volts when there is light out.

Most products will become MUCH less bulky in packaging and start using simple wax-paper or something similar, both sustainable AND lower energy (but not necessarily cheaper – at least initially), since boxes, plastics and other things might not be involved.

Cars – the biggest thing in cars is likely to be increasingly efficient BATTERIES, 150 year old technology – to the rescue.

After the calamity of Detriot is finished you will see either old companies adapt or new companies rise up and start making good cars again, Eventually we will have hyper-efficient cars, something like the Prius that can run on a battery for a 40 or 50 mile range and then use either solar/or some such to recharge.

But OIL and gasoline are going to be in increasingly short supply, and we need – as a nation, to deal effectively with that challenge.

William asks…

Eco-friendly eyeliner?

Hi. Does anyone know any ecofriendly eyeliner? Without animal products, toxic chemicals, etc. Also, I have sensitive eyes, so what brand would be best for me? Thanx.

The Expert answers:

Several great companies out there – Monave, Rejuva, Maia’s Mineral Galaxy, and Just Pure Minerals. The last company doesn’t make them in pencils, you’ll have to buy it in powder form and use a wet eyeliner brush to apply it as an eyeliner. The first three companies make them pencil forms. All of these companies are great, I’ve been using products from them for a while. I have sensitive skin and eyes – their products never irritate my skin or eyes. I have used eye shadows from all of them – never bothered my eyes. I have used an eyeliner from Maia’s Minerals and it didn’t irritate my eyes. I have used Just Pure Minerals’ eye shadows as eyeliners, also no issues. I haven’t used Monave’s and Rejuva’s eyeliners, but should be great – judging from their other products.

All of these companies specialize in producing non-toxic and safe makeup, so you shouldn’t have any trouble with any products from them.

You can find reviews of products from these companies here:

Hope I helped.

The Expert answers:

Is that what they are calling them now? Oh my I live in a town that is filled with these so called Hipsters…..I so want to hit every single one of them with my car. The messed up thing is I like riding bikes and being open to new music and being friendly to the earth but these f***ers are so clickity and they think they are so freaking smart and know the way wow I’m glad I’m not the only one that can’t stand them!

Daniel asks…

Leather and a hybrid don’t get along?

This is not a question. I’m just letting all you greenies out there to know that leather is very bad for the environment. Cattle as you may know emit methane, which is like over 20 times more toxic than carbon dioxide. Millions of tons of grain are fed to cattle. Pesticides are constantly sprayed on crops to feed the cows. And transport trucks for transporting the food and the cows themselves to slaughterhouses are big polluters. Also pesticides are constantly tested on animals (rats, rabbits, dogs, fish, and more) every day. As more animals die, the laboratory people order more animals, which causes pollution. If any of you own a hyrid or any car or piece of clothing in general that is made of leather, please think about the animals and the environment. Fabric is 100% more ecofriendly than leather and billions of gallons of water would be saved if “green” people or people in general switched to buying products other than leather and fur. Thank you.
Also, if you buy leather or fur, you are encouraging the company to order more leather and fur. More animals would be killed and methane emited and so on. Don’t buy them, please!

The Expert answers:

I totally see what you mean
its too bad that some occasions call for leather shoes (dress shoes) etc
anyway, i do like my cars to have fabric since it gets less hot in the summer haha. Hard to clean spills though (eck)

i always think about buying more green/ecofriendly household cleaners but these are usually sold in very small quantities and are expensive. The plastic used to make small bottles are more eco-unfriendly because we keep having to buy more more often

i dont use pesticides anyway

Donna asks…

What do you think of this so far?

Here is a part of chapter one of one of my books that I have just started writing today.
The prologue:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmSOb3c9GENj1k2YCGtN6.nsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20110121181349AAE1rw0

This chapter isn’t finished and it’s just a draft.

Pain strikes through my body as I slip on the wet concrete floor, seeing the warning sign only now. My cheeks redden as my butt hits the ground and I blank out for a second or two, confused. Looking around me, I hear the laughter erupt from the food court. Basically every pair of eyes is on me, some filled with sympathy, others a pang of jealousy while more people have a hideous amount of amusement on their faces.
Hearing the thud of footsteps, a sturdy hand is reached out, the person wanting me to take it. Gazing upward, I gape. This can’t be happening! August, one of the most cutest, caring but dorky guys that was in my year raises an eyebrow, his arm just hanging in front of him.
Taking his hand, hoping that I am not too heavy, I feel the weight of him pulling me up. Positioning my feet steadily on the dampened ground, I look around the mall to be relieved that only a few people are still interested. The crowd has left just as quickly as if they had just finished watching a dumb movie. “Are you alright?” August’s corn-silk hair falls perfectly just shy of his neck, covering only the tips of his ears. There’s no doubt that my friend and I check him out from time to time but for me, I have a different guy on my mind.
August’s parents were hippies back in the day, and I guess you can say that they still are. His Dad has waist-long wavy brown hair and wears tie-dye t-shirts, he works in an ecofriendly business along with his wife. “Um, yeah, I’m fine,” my face grows hotter by the second. He smiles, nodding thoughtfully and crosses his arms against his peace sign cotton shirt. His parents only allow him to wear colourful, hippie style clothing. I can’t say that I hate the way he dresses but August doesn’t care what people are thinking about him, even if it’s good things.
“That’s good,” he shifts to his other leg, careful not to step on his flared light blue jeans and he has to take a step.
“Yeah,” I say checking my phone to play time, then meeting his gaze. “Well, I-I should get going,” he nods. “I’m in kinda a hurry.”
As if seeing my hurried lie, he says, “OK,” and looks away, scratching his arm. “I’ll see you around, maybe.”
Nodding, I leave and smile briefly to myself. there’s no doubt in stating that it was awkward, but his lack of failing to look cute made me forget about the embarrassing incident that happened before hand. Rushing to Mandy’s Mother’s car, I apologise for being late and hope that her Mother isn’t too angry with me. I’m usually late when it involves my best friend’s Mum. It’s as if I have some unknown thing against her.
Mandy just smiles at me as she tells her Mum for probably the seven billions times as to where Quinn lives. I’ve been friends with Mandy since we were six, and have been hanging out with Mandy, Quinn and the gang since the end of tenth grade. Ms. Rhine grunts when Mandy tells her where, “That driveway is so hard to get into. Can she wait outside?”
“She is, Mum.” Mandy and I smile, knowing that Quinn always waits outside her gate ever since Ms. Rhine’s car smashed into the neighbour’s fence.

Helen asks…

Essay about educational and career goals. Can you read and correct my essay, please?

The instruction is for me to write a 500 word essay outlining my career and educational goals, and my choice of a certain degree program.

ESSAY:

My life-long career goal is to become a physical therapist, someone capable of restoring, maintaining, and promoting overall fitness and health in accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions. While my educational goal is aimed at studying to become a physical therapist, I would also like to express my passion for science (especially biology) and computers. I plan to, first, obtain a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology, and then enter and succeed in a refined physical therapy programme. I may even want to make use of my bachelor’s degree and work in a laboratory before studying towards obtaining a degree in physical therapy. It would be a worthwhile experience and broaden my horizons so that I will not be limited to just one career.

I chose biotechnology because it utilizes the sciences of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering computers and information technology to develop tools and products that hold great promise and concern. It has made a great impact on medicine, the environment, edibles, clothing and agriculture, and with its advances, we are on the path of a wonderful journey.

Biotechnology has enabled humans to expand their understanding of the biosphere by journeying into space and exploring the depths of the ocean. We have not only been able to look at the surrounding universe and the depths below with the advancement of tools and techniques, but we also have been able to live there. Organisms that can be used to control or cure certain diseases can be genetically modified and High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds have been developed due to biotechnology. With newer discoveries in this field, better and more ecofriendly fertilizers, manures, pesticides, weedicides and insecticides are being developed. Biotechnology can show us the way to a new, renewable source of energy!

I chose physical therapy because it also utilizes biology, chemistry and physics. It is through that programme, I can be in a profession where I will not have to sit at the desk all day and have the chance to make meaningful differences in the lives of people. Physical therapists get to interact with their patients one-on-one, helping them stretch and do a variety of therapy exercises. They teach people how to walk and use their bodies again, cope with a chronic disease such as multiple sclerosis, and reduce pain.

Jobs are available to physical therapists in a variety of health-care settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, home health care and private practices. Physical therapists are in demand as people are getting older and physical disabilities are increasing. Also, physical therapists earn a good salary. This will make it easy for me to get a job that pays well by the time I complete my studies.

George asks…

I’m considering making the switch to cloth diapers for my 6 month old son- pro’s vs. con’s? maybe a web-link?

I’ve always thought I might prefer cloth diapers to disposable.
But where I live, disposable is the “norm” (I don’t know anyone who cloth diapers) so I never really put as much consideration as I wish I would have.

This past couple months I’ve been thinking about making the switch, I’ve done alittle reading, though not nearly enough to make an informed decision. It doesn’t help that since I don’t know anything about cloth diapering to begin with, I feel clueless as to how it works.
I’m having trouble finding a good website for information on cloth diapering vs. disposable, so if someone could provide a link, that would be much appreciated.

In all honesties, my reason for wanting to cloth diaper is really rather silly: I think that they look cuter than disposable diapers.

Besides that, I’m not a very ecofriendly person. I do take public transportation and I recycle when given the opportunity but that’s about it.
I will admit, these past 5 1/2 months, I feel alittle guilty everytime I throw my son’s diaper in the trash because I know that’s just going to take forever to decompose. Its the same guilty feeling I get when I throw away styrofoam cups.

It wasn’t until I started doing some reading that I found out there could be other benefits.
Is it true that cloth diapers retain the feeling of “wetness” more than disposables and can sometimes help in the potty training process?
(I know that’s a couple years off, but it would be a nice factor to help me convince my hubby to make the switch.)

How about when you’re out in public?
When at home I imagine you could just put the dirty cloth diapers in a plastic bin outside your back door, but when out in public, what do you do? Do you use disposable when out or do you carry the dirty diaper around with you?

How about how clothing fits? Is it true that cloth diapers are more bulky than disposable? does this make it difficult to snap the crotch of onesies or put pants on your infant?

My husband is not at all interested in cloth diapering. Apparently his mother tried it with him and had nothing but bad things to say about it. So I will need to find some arguement to help my case when I ask my husband to make the switch.

I’m unsure the financial difference- and that would be a major factor in our decision to switch or not to switch.

Another major factor: we don’t currently have a washer and drier, and instead use the laundrymat on weekends. There are cloth diapering services in our area, though I’m unsure how those work or what the costs are.
We will most likely have our own washer and drier when we move to Korea in January. (my husband is military)

So if anyone has any personal experience with cloth vs. disposable diapers, please let me know.

The Expert answers:

Cloth diapers are GREAT. I love them.

However, that is simply my opinion. Either choice is a valid one. With your laundrey situation, it will make using cloth diapers extremely difficult- you may want to contemplate having stinking diapers sitting around waiting for the weekend as a factor.
I was raised with cloth diapers. They are less wasteful, but out in public it can be difficult. Sometimes the pins can be dangerous as well. Generally, I would pack a bag and take the dirty diaper with you. Or you might opt to use disposables out in public.
I think they are a great choice- softer, and more comfortable for the baby, as well as less bulky. The wetness sensation issue I have never heard of.
This website is great, if you need more info:

Good luck with your decision. (:

Carol asks…

Do people care about how their everyday products are made?

Just curious. Since people seem to be going through this “natural, organic, ecofriendly, reduce reuse recycle” phase, do they really care about these sort of things? I mean a product might be labeled as eco friendly, but it might only be the ingredients and the packaging that’s eco friendly. The place the product was made might not be and the forms of transportation used to get the product from there to here might not be eco friendly. Are people interested in knowing more about how their products are made so they understand the affects of the product on the world or no?

The Expert answers:

As my old Daddy used to say, If you knew what went into a hot dog, you would never eat one.

Most people do not really understand what all those terms mean anyway. They try to do their best and hope that the people telling them it is natural, organic, and eco-friendly are telling them the truth. We have enough to worry about without thinking about if the factory or transportation is also eco-friendly. I, for one, know they are not. I, however, know there is nothing I can do about it. Even at a certified organic farmer’s market, not everything will be totally eco-friendly. Even if the produce was transported by horse and cart, even if it isn’t washed before it is sold. Somewhere along the line, there will be a step that will not be considered eco-friendly.

I put out my recyclables every week. However, it is picked up by a large gas guzzling truck. I have no control over this and can only take comfort in the fact that I have done my best.

This is all that any of us can say.

Eco-Friendly and/or Cruelty-Free Liquid Bleach Alternative?

I have been looking for a product that is an alternative to liquid bleach. I have a front loading, high-efficiency washer and I can’t use a powdered bleach alternative in my washing cycle. I would like to know if there is a liquid bleach alternative on the market that is ecofriendly and cruelty free? I usually dry my white sheets in the sun, but now that the frost is here, I can’t do that anymore. I’d love to keep my whites white in the cold months as well.

The Expert answers:

Brilliant Bleach and Biz Stain activated non chlorine bleach. Brilliant Bleach is manufactured by Soapworks and it is nontoxic, user and earth friendly, cleaning, laundry and personal care products. Their Fresh Breeze Laundry Powder was originally designed for people with severe allergies and asthma and the products they have made since then are just as gentle and biodegradable. They have a website www.soapworks.com and a toll free # 1-800-699-9917

How do I make my own cleaning products?

I’d like to try making some cleaning products that are ecofriendly. How do I make ones that actually clean?!

The Expert answers:

I used to use Windex for cleaning so many things. Besides windows and mirrors it is good to clean appliances, stainless steel, etc. But now it seems to leave everything streaked. Now I just take a 32 oz. Sprayer and add 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide and fill with water. It works so much better than Windex. If you can’t handle the smell, you can add a drop of essential oil. I don’t because the smell will go away. You can also use baking soda for a scrubber where you would usually use soft scrubs. It works well in the fridge.

If the gov. forced companies to become more eco-friendly, wouldn’t that hurt the economy?

The major complaint by environmentalists is that businesses emit massive amounts of pollution through the elimination of waste, pollution from production itself, and the vehicles they use to transport their products. Sure the government could place restrictions on emission levels, but how would they prevent the economic loss that would cause when the companies can no longer produce as they have been? Please someone lend an idea. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Congress has made it abundently clear that EPA can’t enact rules and regulations without a cost/benefit analysis. If the costs exceed the benefits, business continues as usual.

So if the tree huggers got their way, yes, it would mean the end of the US as we know it. But that is not going to happen.

A clean environment isn’t free, and we pay more for it, but the return on investment is less money spent on healthcare. (Healthcare is so enormously expensive that quite a bit can be spent on the environment and we would still come out ahead.)

The fuel efficiency standards are on the margin of any cost/benefit, and originally came about because of OPEC, not for any reason of pollution abatement.

The cost/benefit on CO2 regulation is so expensive, basically destroying the entire American economy to prevent some really nebulous future possibilities, that no politician in America wants to touch it. So business as usual. Maybe build some nuclear power plants.

The EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory showed many businesses how incredibly sloppy they were running their operations, letting valuable materials evaporate into the air and pollute the water. Stuff that made economic sense to recover.

Tree huggers may want to go back to the stone age, but don’t assume business is always rational. Sometimes you have to hit them over the head with a 2 x 4 to get them to do something in their own self interest.

By the way, you don’t see anyone rushing to regulate and/or remove pharmaceuticals from drinking water.

No one in America is going to give up their drugs.
