Mark asks…

Eco-Friendlier Scrubbing Bubbles?

I used to really love the power of Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner, but I’ve grown concerned about the carcinogens in it and the harm it does to the planet. Is there any more natural ecofriendly product out there that works as well as Scrubbing Bubbles?

The Expert answers:

Vinegar and baking soda do produce that bubbly reaction but let’s be clear it is the fizz that gets you what you want. Chemically if you balance the equation (and I don’t know how to do that anymore…high school was a long time ago…) you get little more than water so it isn’t really any good past that fizzing. Together they are not superheroes for very long. They are far more powerful used separately.

Another option, esp if you want some whitening or bleaching action is to use hydrogen peroxide with baking soda. Let the peroxide work for a bit, then add the baking soda.

The way I would think to do it….is if you have a spray bottle, put your liquid in that and apply a fine mist to the area. Then get an old shaker…a salt shaker, a reused baby powder container…whatever and apply the baking soda like glitter to a sprayed area. Let it foam up, then rinse it away.

ALSO and I know this is strong language for the super green people…but if you use plain old bleach in a responsible way (super diluted, resulting in using tiny tiny amounts) it works wonders and saves all those horribly expensive, more complicated chemical cocktails. When I need a scouring powder, I sprinkle baking soda down on the counter and then apply a couple drops of straight bleach, work into a paste, then rinse it away. OR a very weak solution of bleach in a sprayer is more than enough germ killing power for an everyday cleaner…just a quart bottle with a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and a tablespoon of bleach…shake together and keep it handy. I have one of this mix, and one of same except vinegar instead of bleach! You have to know when to use bleach, however. Bleach does not really cut grease or water spots, or bring up the shine on surfaces. It is for disinfecting. So it doesn’t go everywhere. So part of responsible use of bleach is NOT for use as an all-purpose cleaner.

Michael asks…

Recently purchased a fixer upper rental property, What company provides best cleaning products?

I just purchased a rental property that needs a lot of work & cleaning. What company provides the best cleaning products at a reasonable cost & are ecofriendly?

The Expert answers:

Candy, your best bet would be to just look around. Just remember one thing, get written estimates before you agree to anything.

In fac,t if you are seeking accurate local rates of cleaning, a good place to start would be inquiring services from housekeeping companies in your area (the do-it-all companies); otherwise, asking on here won’t be as much help because rates vary by location.

Here’s a site that offers a resourceful tip when seeking cleaning maids:

http://plusrecipes.com/PlusRecipes_Free_Estimates_Cleaning.htm

Hope this helps!

Sandy asks…

Vinegar and Baking Soda for cleaning?

I have been using this to clean for years now, scrubbing the sink and tub, washing counters, cleaning drains. I always figured that the vinegar was acidic enough to eliminate most bacteria. Am I right or wrong, and if I’m wrong is there a better way to clean that is natural? I refuse to buy antibacterial products (although I guess I do use a 10% bleach solution, which by its nature is antibacterial, from time to time, but only when it is absolutely necessary) and most commercially produced cleaners. Does Seventh Generation or any of those other Ecofriendly products work better than the baking soda and vinegar method?

The Expert answers:

Vinegar will remove most films and grimes, but does not dissenfect, nor does it sanitize. You can buy products that have an E.P.A registration number, meaning that the epa has approved of that product to be safe for the enviroment. Hospitals, Barber shops, And hair salons are required to use theese products. They can be purchased at any local resturant or janitorial supply store. If you are still not comfortable with that idea, mabey you can try 70% isopropyl alcohol. It will kill many not all, but many germs on a non-porous surface.

Sharon asks…

What are your favorite “green” products? (key word Obama)?

Which green products do you believe have the greatest impact for the for personal use?

– Which ones do you like the best?

– Which ones are a waste of time?

– Do you go out of your way to buy earth friendly products if it is a comparable price and quality?

– Would you be willing to pay a little extra to buy more earth friendly products?

– Do you even take it into consideration if it is earth friendly or not when making your purchase decision?

– Do you think that people overstate their “greenness” to be trendy?

– Are you considering buying green Christmas/ Birthday Presents?

– Which of these do you consider earth friendly:

Solar products
recycled products fair trade
wind energy Products
organic products
bamboo products
efficient lighting
recycling assistants (bins, can crushers, sorters, water purifiers, water bottles, etc)
Earth Friendly cleaning supplies, cosmetics, body care products, etc.

I would greatly appreciate people providing feedback on this topic.

By the way, sorry about the whole keyword thing, I am simply trying to draw more attention to the topic.

Basicallly I am starting a green goods store because I try to buy everything I can that is eco friendly, and I have found that a majority of it is crap that Ii end up having to pitch anyway, and almost all of it is overpricced for what you get bbecause it has the “green” label on it. Obviously I am in it to make some money, but I am primarily in it to help others to be more environmentallly friendly, be confident in the quality they will recieve, and know that each product was researched for the validity of their “green claims”.

What do you all think?

The Expert answers:

I am not a trendy type person but I am excited about the milk
and vegetables and then maybe the meat. I have long thought pesticides in the food caused cancer ( one of the causes ) and the hormones also. The other green products at this point are too expensive.

Sandra asks…

Where can I find eco-friendly food packaging?

I will be making and selling a food product with the consistency of cream cheese. I am looking for biodegradable, or AT LEAST, recycled/BPA-free plastic containers online. Can’t seem to find anything like that. Any idea? Thanks for your responses!

The Expert answers:

I would recommend going to a natural health food store (where you can be pretty sure most packaging is eco-friendly), writing down the name of several brands that sell non-competing products in similar containers, and then contacting them to explain your situation and ask them questions about their packaging or who did it. Most green-conscious companies I’ve dealt with are super friendly and helpful, but it’s still a good idea not to contact someone who would be your direct competition, just as a courtesy.

The boy…had to think for a second, but I’m feeling a Devon (Devin?)…..Or maybe Shane or Reece, names which have Irish roots.

Why do some sheets turn brittle and scratchy after one wash while others do not?

I buy the high thread counts and the Egyptian whoopdeedo sheets but it does not matter. They are all immediately ruined after one wash. I dont notice this problem with clothes, only sheets. How do I find a sheet that wont go hard in the wash? Has anyone else had this problem?

The Expert answers:

How are you drying them, in a dryer with fabric softener or on a clothes line. If you are using a clothes line they will be hard and stiff unless the wind is blowing pretty hard. The heat from a dryer activates the softener and makes them nice and soft normally.

William asks…

What should I name my coffee/consignment shop?

Hello
I am about to open up a second hand/ consignment shop with a small coffee bar inside.
I want to call it something like ………’s Bazaar and coffee bar.
My name is Sasha, but I don’t know if I want that to be in the name because a lot of people have trouble with my name already.
My store will sell good quality second hand clothes and other items, as well as art, handmade crafts, jewelry, books etc.
Also part of my profits will be donated to eco friendly causes and I want to use the environment card to attract consignors and buyers.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

The Expert answers:

Keep the name simple… You dont want your customers having to blurt out an encyclopedia when telling friends about your shop..

” Sasha’s Emporium”.. Its plain.. Its simple.. I like it..:O)…

Sharon asks…

Whats the deal with Megan Fox?

Why is everyone so obsessed with her? Of course, shes pretty, but there are MANY actresses that are just as if not more pretty than she is. She seems a bit conceited.

Is it just me or is megan foxs personality so slutty/stupid? The things she says in magazines are just so retarted.
“Well clearly, I’m not ugly”,

“I was always wearing the smallest clothes I could find. I would go to the mall like that “,

“I just like to stay home and have sex.”

“men are weak puppies”

” I want weed to be legal I’ll be the first one in line to buy some!”

” actors are like prostitutes”

WTF is she talking about half the time! Then shell mock scarlett johansson for being smart and using big words and being Eco friendly. I remember the first time I saw her I thought wow she’s hot look at those eyes! But come on she’s like trailer trash stripper girl who’s so conceited. And talent? Not good at acting. Look at other hot cool smart girls, scarlett jo, natalie portman, bar rafaeli, Miranda kerr, adriana Lima, and if course anjelina jolie!! Am I right? Do you agree/disagree?

-Also, every thing she does is sexual. EVERYTHING. She is always acting very provocatively.

-Did you see her at the MTV awards? SHe was very rude to Andy whathisface acting very condescendigly and looking at him like “Wow. WHat a retard”. ANd when she ws presenting she was acting very bored and too good for it, like “Lets get this over with.”

The Expert answers:

She’s nasty. She looks and acts like porn star trash. Nothing attractive about that.

PLUS…. She has an adam’s apple.

Eco-friendly way to ditch old makeup?

I have a massive amount of old makeup.

For the most part the culprits are lips products, though I do have one or two old mascaras and shadows, as well as a small but ancient vile of acne solution.

I have no clue what to do with these products other then washing or dissolving them in their containers and pouring them down the sink, which seems like a very enviromentally unsound way to deal with the clutter.

I’ve seen “art” and “costume party” solutions, though I want a simple and stationary way to resolve this issue. Does anyone have any tips or ideas?

The Expert answers:

Don’t throw it away…or at least not yet. Talk to friends to see if they would like to take any of your stuff, or see if a charity or thrift store would accept the makeup. If I were you, I’d keep some just in case a celebration or such.

Laura asks…

Do eco-friendly light bulbs have trace amounts of mercury?

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association or NEMA is a U.S.-based association, which was created on September 1, 1926, when the Associated Manufacturers of Electrical Supplies and the Electric Power Club merged. It is headquartered in Rosslyn, Virginia. It sets many common standards used in electrical products among its over 400 members.

The Expert answers:

Some do, but it’s mercury gas not the room temperature liquid form. Of course, the fumes are what is poisonous, so if you have these installed and one breaks, always wear a mask over your mouth and nose just to be safe.

Paul asks…

Was the “cash for clunkers” program an experiment for future “Eco-incentive” programs to come?

eventually we will need to reduce our oil consumption by at least half sometime in the next 50 years I don’t think it’s possible without having the government offer a financial/tax incentive because we have capitalist free trade that doesn’t seem to be conducive to cultivating expensive Eco friendly industry. It’s just cheaper to go with the status quo. business is not going to double or triple there cost to make eco friendly products. I checked the price for some biodegradable silverware and it was 5-6 dollars for a 25 piece set when i can go to walmart and buy a 48piece set for $1.35
the 48 piece set was plastic my point is it’s simply more economical for business to simply buy cheap stuff instead of spending more for eco friendly products.

The Expert answers:

Cash for Clunkers was okay, but I’d hate to see other programs based on it. For one thing in this economy, many are not going to be able to afford the cars they bought and they will default on their loans. We can’t afford another bailout.

I doubt this Cash for Clunkers was eco-friendly, all the cars traded are now going into the landfill all at once. These cars could have been given to low-income and down and out families who need transportation to get to work.

And the way it is now, all the car dealerships who participated in this are on the hook for millions of dollars, because the Government is being slow and stupid, in paying out the money they were going to reimburse the dealerships.

Where can I find fashionable, eco-friendly carry-on luggage?

My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up. He is a pilot and also very eco-conscious. (…Yes, I know it seems ironic.) He’s been toting around the same old smelly, noisy carry-on for years and I’d like to buy him something that is (A) environmentally friendly, (B) soft-sided but somewhat structured, and (C) not totally frumpy. Sleek or sporty would be ideal.

I’ve looked into a lot of the obvious solutions (Heys, American Tourister’s eco collection, Eco-traveler), but none seem to be exactly what I’m looking for. I like Patagonia’s travel gear, but I didn’t want to get him a rolling backpack or duffle without structured sides. I found a few nylon carry-ons on the REI website, but couldn’t find info. on how they’re waterproofed/whether they’re PVC free.

Does anyone know where I could find manufacturing info on luggage that does not necessarily advertise itself as ecofriendly?

Any suggestions on brands, products, and materials will help. Thank you!

David asks…

I am the new owner of a product complete with website. How do I change ownership and manage the site?

It is an Ecofriendly product successfully sold via the already established website. I would like to manage the website myself, bring it up to date, and make a few changes. If you are experienced in running a business via the internet, can you help me, please. This is something I have never done before and I want to continue the success of the business. Hope you can help. Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Find out if the site is registered with Nominet (they hold the domain names) and transfer it to yourself through them. Also i would go into a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program and change the password so that only you have control of what is uploaded onto your site. The previous owner should have passed this info on to you.
Promotion is the key word here (you did not promote your site!) so get as many people as possible to your site. One see’s the site, but tells two.

Have you considered or bought the new Graco Eco-Friendly crib?

Graco debuted a new crib – Dakota EcoFriendly. Here is the information on it:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d…

If you have bought this or looked into it, what are your thoughts? I would love to get some feedback as our WalMart does not carry it and I am leary of purchasing a crib sight unseen.

The link doesn’t work 🙁

It sounds awesome. We just bought a crib today otherwise I’d consider getting it if my walmart had it.

Will my new yoga mat smell like plastic forever?

I just got a new yoga mat and it has an awful, strong chemical/plastic smell, so bad that I could barely use it during the first class even though I had aired it out for 2 days prior. I washed the mat on the gentle cycle in the washing machine and it has been air drying on the clothes line outside since but the smell is still very strong! Will the smell weaken/disappear or am I doomed with this mat? Anyone had a similar experience? Next time I will definitely buy an ecofriendly mat as I hear they don’t have this smell, but for now I’d like to make the most of what I have, so any suggestions will be very appreciated! Thank you!

The Expert answers:

Yoga mats often have a strong smell when they are first purchased depending on what they are made of. You may find the mat has a rubber or plastic scent. Even eco-friendly mats can have a strange scent in the beginning. This is natural, and will fade with time and use. In the meantime, continue to air the mat outside and try wiping it down with a tea tree oil/water or lemon/water mixture.

Hope this helps!

Sharon asks…

Is the start of my book good? I’m 13?

In the planet Starling, everything remained silent. Time stood stock-still after the devastation that had previously subjugated its lands, seas and mountains. It was nothing like Earth; it was a much more beautiful place to be. Waterfalls dominated the rainforests; the sands in the deserts were of the most exquisite golden shade, and everyone lived in harmony, humans and animals alike. Everything seemed perfect, yet a surge of evil was bubbling at the surface, and it was only a matter of time before it forced its way into Starling’s lands, claiming every inhabitant, dead or alive, as its own.
In early November, just before the sun had vanished behind the hills, the community had met up in the village pub to talk about the new arrivals. The pub was at the bottom of the valley, and only members of the village could go there. Not that anyone else ventured so far into the wilderness – no one but the Brown family. They were new, fresh gossip for the villagers, yet a mystery to everyone.
When viewed from afar, they seemed no different from the others. They wore the same type of clothes – flowered dresses and raincoats – their skin was the same colour – ivory – yet when up close you could tell that they were different in some way. They seemed weary-eyed, weak, as if they were battling a tempest inside of their heads, and every single one of them stuck together.
When they had arrived in the valley, they settled quickly into the small cottage on the outskirts of the town. It had been deserted for years, for decades, even. Everyone knew that there was something about them that was strange and new. Different.
As the members of the village gathered into the pub, ordering beer from the man behind the bar, Timothy, there was a strange a uneasiness in the air, as if all of the happiness had been taken away, and there was no asking why.
“So, Tim, did you hear about the new family? Apparently they’re serial killers that moved over here. I wouldn’t be surprised, I mean, I have you seen the look on that brunettes face?” asked Mr Jenkins in a strong Irish accent, scrunching up his face into the perfect imitation of Latisha’s serious face. He was the first man willing to mention them, and it didn’t go unnoticed by the crowd.
Mr Jenkins had immigrated to the new word in 2040, when life on earth had become to upsetting for him after his wife, Margret, had tragically passed away in a car crash. He realised that it would be like going back in time, as there was no technology on the new planet. It was eco friendly – something that earth had never managed to be. Global warming was getting worse, which is why the government had decided to start making a new world. ‘Their best decision yet,’ Timothy had once said once in a drunken stupor.
There were a few exchanged glances, a few nervous looks, before someone finally spoke out.
“I’d keep my mouth shut if I were you, Edmund.” As if from nowhere, a figure appeared from in the shadows. She strode over to Mr Jenkins, who had shrunk back into his chair, and stopped when she was directly facing him. It was Latisha’s daughter, Cleo. She was pretty, with brown hair like her mother’s flowing down her back in elegant curls, yet the look on her face was menacing, frightening.
Mr Jenkins’ face dropped as he caught a glimpse of her eyes. They flashed crimson, as she raised her hands. In one movement, he was on the floor, dead. And so the devastation began.

The Expert answers:

I know just what you are talking about. I have some pillowcases in my linen closet that I might as well throw out because of the same problem.
This is the little bit I have learned, I hope it helps.

I buy 100% Pima Cotton or 100% Supima Cotton sheets with a single ply thread count of 400 or more. They cost a fortune. I shop sales on websites or buy the discontinued colors to save money.

I don’t know what the difference is between Egyptian Cotton, sateen, and Pima Cotton, but there is one, and it matters. The Pima Cotton or Supima Cotton is what you want.

The thread count is tricky, I’m not sure I can explain it accurately. 400 thread count means that there are 400 threads in one inch of fabric. In single ply, there are actually 400 individual threads in each inch of the sheet. If it’s not single ply, the manufacturer can take one long thread and then spin several threads (let’s say 5) along it, so one single thread is now a big fat one. Then they count that as 5 threads. So it doesn’t have the same feel as 400 individual threads because it’s really just 80 fat threads.

That’s all I know. Good Luck.

Is powder detergent damaging to washing machine?

Found some ecofriendly detergent at a flea market for $1 a box. It’s called EcoPath, and I’ve used it, like it, and want to buy more. Here’s the prob.

My b/f just bought a new washing machine for the house (it’s about 1 year old now), and he’s old-school enough that he thinks powder will damage the machine in the long run. He’s lived in apartment complexes where the machines’ lids and drums were caked in old powder.

But this powder is very fine-grained, and there are no clumps in it., Further, I use (and plan on using no more than) 1/4 cup per load. As long as I dissolve the powder in the filling water before adding the clothes, I say that getting multiple boxes is ok. He’s VERY iffy about it.

I’d love expert opinions so we can feel good about the decision we finally make about using powder or not. Thanx!
The new washing machine is a top-loader. I forgot to metion that. 🙂

The Expert answers:

Your boyfriend has the right idea. Powders can block up pumps and cake on machine hardware if you always use cold water. If you have a few hot water washes in between the buildups usually aren’t as serious.

We use liquid Tide 2X. It doesn’t take much to get the job done and it is already dissolved of course. I would recommend that you find a good liquid detergent and use about half the suggested dose per load. Your washing machine will be happier in the long run. Good Luck!

Ok im not really sure this is going to make any sense but… im trying to reinvent my style and i dont really know the style im trying to get. You know the kind of women who wear yoga pants have long hair (sometimes) look like they are always going to yoga class but look stylish not frumpy but are like vegan…ha ha i mean not that every vegan dresses alike but you know what im getting at maybe?

I kinda want to say hippie but when i think of hippie i think of groovy tie die shirts and stuff like that. I dont want to dress like that.

Im a crunchy mom who is eco friendly. along with the yogo pants i like to wear i also like sun dresses which kinda playes into the hippiness. anyways what do i call my personal style and what types of clothes should i wear to make my natural, crunchy, hippie yoga style work? also how should i wear my hair Thanks!!

The Expert answers:

Just look up “bohemian”. Often listed as “boho”. Also try “sophisticated” and do an image search. You’ll get loads of ideas.

Susan asks…

On a personal level what else could I do to lower my carbon footprint?

1. I’m a vegan (no meat; dairy; egg; honey; gelatin. Anything from an animal).
2. I don’t drive.
3. I try not to catch public transport but walk instead.
4. I try not to eat planet damaging grains (like soy and rice) as much as possible.
5. I shop at local stores.
6. I wash all my clothes in cold water.
7. I turn off all appliances at the power point when I’m not using them.
8. I only use “eco friendly” cleaning products.
9. I recycle as much as possible.

What else could I do?

THANKS!
10. I don’t use the A/C or heater.
11. I carbon offset my electricity bill.

The Expert answers:

Grow some of your own food?

Buy more stuff second hand? I get most of my shirts, books & DVDs second hand and sell them when I’m done with them.

Renewable power? If you can afford it and you live in a place that is good for it, then solar heating or maybe even electricity, a wind turbine if you live rurally.

Try not to fly.

To be honest, looks like you’re doing better than me!

Thomas asks…

Household carbon emissions?

hey, I’m researching what effect an eco friendly house would have on the environment, and i need some answers. Percentages would be great.

How many gasses ( or what percentage of gasses) would you save using

-solar power and opposed to conventional with micro hydro as a back up?
-Using energy saving light bulbs?
-using natural light during the day?
-using a fire and warm clothes instead of a gas heater?

And how much water would you save using
– a water tank?
-A water saving shower head?
-sensor basins?
-front load washing machine?
-grey water for dishes etc. ?

thanx soo much =D

The Expert answers:

I do know that underneath your kitchen sink is a ton more worse than going down your aisle at the grocery store. Our air inside our homes are 70x worse than outside. It’s a very serious situation. Chemicals seep out through plastic containers of cleaning liquids and such. So all products like this should be replaced. The effects of your house being eco-friendly with no toxins reduces your risk of cancer later in life.

Richard asks…

Tiny itchy red bumps all over face and swollen eyes.. can anyone help?

About a week ago I started using witch hazel on my face. My routine included pouring witch hazel on a cotton ball and wiping it on my face to remove my makeup. Afterward, I would take a shower and proceed with my face wash and moisturizing my skin with Cetaphil lotion after my shower. A couple days later, I noticed some skin irritation on the sides of my nose. By Monday my eyes were very swollen and I developed tiny itchy bumps all over my face that feel somewhat dry to touch. Here is a picture of what I am talking about:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f215/jpcougar_70/IMG_0164.jpg

Other then that, possible causes might be because I started using a new laundry detergent. I switched from Tide to an ecofriendly laundry detergent. I should also probably mention that I have bumps caused by an allergic reaction all over my body. However, they are not as severe as the ones on my face, in fact, they are very different to the bumps that are on my face. The bumps on my body are similar to bug bites. I washed everything from my clothes to my pillow cases in this laundry detergent. So that might possibly be a cause or might have added to the problem. I normally have very smooth skin and rarely break out.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? How long will this condition take to go away? Any helpful information is greatly appreciated.

The Expert answers:

Hey

Argh! I hate rashes and that looks like it could be an allergic rash. What i would do is stop using anything on your face for a few days. If you have been using new detergent that is probably what it is and i would stop using it. If this does not start clearing up in a few days i would go get it checked out with a g.p or if it is really annoying you.

Hope this helps

good luck

Carol asks…

Is tin or plastic more eco-friendly/green?

I need to buy packaging for body products and am wondering what is more ecofriendly.. tin or plastic. In production and terms of recycling, is one better than the other?

Or, does anyone know wholesale suppliers of recycled or ecofriendly bottle/jar packaging (google did not help much).

Thanks!

The Expert answers:

I don’t know what you mean by “body products”, but you should be aware that different plastics have different perm-ratings, that is, a different permeability to gases. This might make a difference if you need containers that are fully air-tight.

Chris asks…

How do I know if the hemp products I buy are using sustainably grown hemp?

There are so many products that advertise the are ecofriendly because they are made from hemp. Is all hemp sustainably grown?

The Expert answers:

If you really want to know you should contact the company directly. Keep in mind, however, that some companies engage in “greenwashing” which is saying a product is green, eco-friendly, fair trade, etc but, it’s really not.

Susan asks…

Can recycling help reduce your Carbon footprint?

I need some data for an biology assignment. Please help!!!!!!!
Please answer these survey questions! Theres only 7!
1 What is your first name? (if you want you can make it up)
2 What is your gender? (male, female)
3 How old are you?
4 What do you recycle on a regular basis?
5 What ecofriendly products do you buy?
6What do you do to reduce your carbon footprint?
7 Is it important to you to reduce you carbon footprint? Why or Why not?

The Expert answers:

My name is Katherine
I am female
I am 23 years old
I recycle everything I can and what I can’t I try to re-use or give away to a second hand store or through the swap meets
I try to buy only all natural, cruelty free and Fair Trade foods and products. If they have ‘greener’ packaging or less packaging and are environmentally conscious then it’s a bonus.
To reduce my carbon footprint I am a vegan, I don’t buy plastic water bottles I have a filter. I don’t use plastic bags, I recycle, I unplug everything when it’s not in use. I don’t buy things compulsively, because our over consumption is ruining the planet. (Check out The Story of Stuff online) I use low flow faucets and shower heads, and I time my showers to 5-7 mins. I try to walk or carpool instead of drive. And I grow my own vegetables, herbs and some fruit organically.
I don’t pay attention to ‘carbon footprint’ as much as just being aware of how my actions, even little ones, affect the big picture. We only have one planet and I want it to be beautiful and healthy for future generations.

Donna asks…

How does an average consumer buy products that are good for the environment?

Much like the “Fat-Free” era of the 90’s there are many products that are claiming to be better for the environment. Most of the time they are more expensive, but how does the average consumer really know that the products they are paying more for, are really better for the environment? From light bulbs, to cars, to paper there really isn’t a single major company that does not have some type of ecofriendly product on the shelf. Is there some sort of rating system (or something) for the average consumer, which will let the them know which companies have really gotten on board the environmental friendly production of goods, and which companies are just pretending?

The Expert answers:

True story. A waitress tries to green up the workplace, and in the course of doing research decides to open up a store that promotes sustainable living. She’s been open a year and a half now, word of mouth is kicking in, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s a millionaire before the decade is out.

Check out the site. The stuff is out there, if you do your homework.

Nancy asks…

Is laying concrete more eco friendly than laying kiln-dried bricks ?

i refer to ecofriendly as to the amount of green house gases emitted from the mining through to manufacture and transport and eventual laying of the product. i will be laying a new driveway that will use 5 cubic meters of ready mixed concrete , should i use kiln-dried bricks instead ?

The Expert answers:

At 5 cubic meters, go with concrete. To Green the driveway, though add flat-metal strapping reinforcement vs. Rebar or mesh wire. The driveway will last a lot longer, will better flex with the ground, and wont crack/crumble as much.

Lizzie asks…

Do you agree that our political correct society has thwarted progress?

Obama thinks NASA should be a tool of muslim outreach. NASA hasn’t done anything useful in a long time. It’s a politically correct , affirmative actions cesspool of liberal hate.

All liberals think that inventing, progressing, and advancing in terms of technology is bad, because it pollutes and is unfair to minorities.

Liberal lawyers have sued so many companies and people, no one wants to risk or invent in America anymore.

If you think i am exaggerating, or full of shyt, look at your appliances in your home. Stove, dishwasher, Car, vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, everything. It has not improved in 30 or 50 years. In 1990, my car got 48 miles per gallon – same as a so-called “hybrid”. In 1960, my grandmother’s washing machine cleaned better than today’s ecofriendly piece of shyt washing machines that use 2 ounces of water and leave your clothes covered with bacteria.
Unbeliveable.
Do you agree or not
yes, we’ve advanced a lot with computers and video games and Google. But i would remind you that those things do not amount to progress.
They are the media of today.
It should be a small part of progress, but it’s 100% of progress. It would be like the 20th century being defined by TV and radio and nothing else. Still riding horses and using stone tools

The Expert answers:

Yes. Until we can tell the truth without fear it will continue as such.

PCness is just a polite term for a flat out lie.

William asks…

What am I?(this is not to long)?

okay so i keep being told im an hipster but when i looked it up its says there rude n mean but im nice to everyone even the ppl i cant stand. so i asked the ppl why they think im hipster and its because i got my own style with wearing colorful clothes, fake glasses, i wear converses almost everyday, i love art, and that i take photos a lot, also this one is odd but that i wear a toe ring as a pinky ring cause i want to haha n also some of the clothes pics on tumblr i wear stuff similar. idk if this is important but im very eco friendly n i dont do drugs nor drink.

The Expert answers:

Labels mean nothing. They are trying to describe you, so they have picked a label they think fits. Next time them no, but you are eccentric.

Susan asks…

so, i have a hurley backpack..?

well, im pretty much a prep. i love sparkles, i wear girly clothes with frills and everything, but i have a hurley backpack.. its plaid, black and blue. do you think i can pull it off? or will it look weird, and look like im trying to be something im not?
i also have this water bottle with an ECO FRIENDLY sign on it. hahaha.. am i weird or what?

how should i dress now, cause i really like the backpack.. should i change my image?

there are some girls that wear these clothes, and have a fox backpack, but they pull it off, and idk how to..

The Expert answers:

Definitely don’t try and mix styles .

9. I recycle as much as possible.
I don’t use the AC or heater.
That’s what jumpers are for.
I can’t go solar I live in units.

The Expert answers:

-Get solar panels so you can power your appliances when you use them (especially if your power currently comes from a fossil fuel plant).
-Grow your own produce since the trucks/freight lines and refrigeration units use up power and the emissions from the freight transport are harmful.
-Own clothes/towels/sheets/cloth-items from eco-friendly materials.
-Have furniture and clothing items from recycled products (like the Timberland boots made from recycled products that are currently being advertised- see link).

Good luck, this kind of lifestyle is so admirable!

Donald asks…

Is this a good Christmas list?

I was wondering if this is a good Christmas list. Keep in mind, my parents told me if I got good grades my first quarter I would get most of the stuff thats on my list (i have a 4.0 gpa), and money isn’t really that big of an issue either, hence some of the things on my list.

1. new macbook (the ecofriendly one)
2. blackberry bold
3. 2010 jeep grand cherokee or a audi A4 (i need a new car really badly)
4. DVR in my room
5. new clothes
6. for my credit card to work again

and thats it I guess. does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should change or add??? or what you like? or even what you want? all answers are appreciated 🙂

The Expert answers:

You know alot of people are not having a Christmas this year. That list seems way to far expensive to ask for your parents. What do you actually need? How about Clothes, new pairs of shoes? Something that helps you with good grades ?

Eco-friendly projects?

I need some ideas for ecofriendly projects.
Meaning, ALL of the products used are biodegradable.

If you have links to some ideas, please post them.
If you know some projects off the top of your head, please share them.
I can use store-bought products, or stuff from outside.

Where I live, there’s a forest and lake, so you have an idea of some stuff I can use.

The Expert answers:

If you have ducks on the lake you could throw your stale bread to them and take good close ups – pine cone sculptures coloured with natural food dyes tied with hessian string or raffia- Paintings in natural food dyes on recycled cotton e.g mans handkerchief – that you leave out in the open and photograph every day to see it changing – planting seeds in an abstract pattern photograph them as they grow. You can do this in a large container and mask off the planting bits with cardboard so you get swathes of difference use dense cover plants like allysum

Donald asks…

R u an eco friend person…?

r u using eco friendly products at home, office, paper bags ? plzz use paper bags..save trees …save our mother EARTH…

The Expert answers:

Yes I am, I use mostly public transport, have planted some saplings(of trees) around my neighborhood,I don’t smoke, I don’t litter my surroundings(any place for that matter)….I use mostly jute products,I encourage people to be eco-friendly and use eco-friendly products and dispose the non eco-friendly ones like plastics, safely,I can go and and on…but do not like to talk much about myself….Have a nice day all! 🙂
P.S:I am a vegetarian and being vegetarian helps us reduce our carbon footprint.

Charles asks…

How can powerless, normal people help fight against global warming ?

Lately,I have invested a lot of thoughts on global warming issues. I’m equaly concerned, but i just don’t know whether I can give any significant support.

For instance, normal citizens like me cannot afford a hybrid car. I would be indebted to save the world..

Furthermore, i wish I could buy all the ecofriendly products in the shops, but they are also priced higher for average people’s budget.

Is it wrong to think that the bigger responsibility should start with the world leaders and corprorations? We normal citizens buy what we get. i say why can’t govts ban any environmentally hazardous consumation? But wait, I know that this could cripple many economies and plummet unemployment, and it’s not everybody who can produce cost effectively for ecofriendly products. Of course, money plays a role here, and who’s willing to invest more cash in R&D.

But until the big powers step up, I’m sorry i can”t be much help. Anybody out there who shares my view point ?
Or if anybody think otherwise, enlighten me…

The Expert answers:

The same way that powerless, normal people “created”it.

Paul asks…

CLEANING PRODUCTS GIVE ME A HEADACHE.?

Smells give ne migraines, so i’m looking for a multi purpose cleaning spray that doesn’t smell.
Lots of people recommend eco friendly products, but some of these still smell.
Can anyone suggest anything that will clean my kitchen surfaces (even if i have been cutting chicken on it), but won’t give me a headache.

The Expert answers:

None of the above!
I sell Enjo cleaning fibres, (no I am not trying to sell to you) but we clean with water!
Natural air has no smell, you don’t need a smell for a surface to be clean. As long as the surface dries out after you have wiped it down – no bacteria can live without moisture or a food source. Wipe down surfaces with water, then dry off with a towel.
The chemicals we are told to use through the media are not necessary and are dangerous, society today has been led to believe that you need chemicals to clean your home – rubbish!
Professional cleaners use Enjo fibres, people with sensitive skin, asthma, allergies, cancer sufferers switch over and people with young children, those who care for our environment (oceans & waterways) – everyone has a reason to stop using chemicals, they just don’t know how to!
Have a look at the Enjo web site.

Maria asks…

Where can I find eco-friendly plastic package alternatives?

I am looking to sell a product and would prefer to package it in something other than plastic.

The Expert answers:

Depending on what you want to package, visit a recycling center for your materials. For FREE!

Our local winery visits our recycling center regularly in search of discarded bottles to take home, clean, and re-use. Nobody charges him, and as far as they’re concerned it makes a lighter load for them to ship off. Same goes there for anyone who comes in to request materials.

Donna asks…

Partner changing non tested on animal products?

My partner just revealed that he’s been refilling the Eco friendly, non animal tested product bottles with chemical and tested on animal products that he says work better.
I’m fairly pissed off and annoyed.

What would you do?

The Expert answers:

Dump him!

Steven asks…

How else can I be eco-friendly?

I have some natural products or whatever and I know about using your own bag when shopping. But what else can I do? Anyone have any ideas that don’t involve giving up my car everyday? Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Avoiding the use of plastic and shopping bags is one of the major contributions in becoming Eco friendly. Saving fuel is another way. You can try to reduce the use of car, why not ? Try pooling of cars in your neighbourhood. Instead of four or five cars, one can leave from your street to the business district. You are saving 3/4 or 4/5 of fuel. This requires physical and mental adjustment. You can walk around to a friend’s place or dentist if the distance is about a mile or two. This way , you not only save fuel but also exercising. You can use organic products thus avoiding usage of chemical fertilizers. Use less power in your house and office so that you save energy. Use of less paper and trying to go electronic or online will save the trees and forests.

How to get ALOT of FREE TRAFFIC?

I am new to online marketing. I have a great membership with a wonderful company who sales ecofriendly products, from make-up to house cleaning products. I have used their products for years. I have just recently tried to promote the products and the home business part of the company on the web, however I just don’t seem to be generating enough traffic. I really do not want to spend alot of funds testing different traffic sites just to see if they will work. Does anyone know where I can get good traffic for free to start out with?

What’s a good opening to a going green essay?

I’m writing an essay and it must describe the things i have done to encourage and support a green lifestyle. Also I have to write about why it’s important to use ecofriendly products. I have this part done, I need an opening for this essay. Any help will be great.

The Expert answers:

It is a fact that only twelve people have walked on a heavenly body other than the Earth, and it seems unlikely that any of us will set up housekeeping on another world any time soon. This being the case, it appears that taking care of the only home any one of us will have for the foreseeable future would be a good idea. Part of taking care of our celestial home is certainly adopting as green, eco-friendly, a lifestyle as possible.

If you like this, re-write it in your words and good luck on your essay.
