Betty asks…

Sustainable Development?

’There is no simple single meaning of sustainable development: far from making the phrase useless, it is precisely because of its ability to host divergent ideas that sustainable development has proved so useful, and has become so dominant” (Adams,2009:23).

Do you agree with this statement and if so, why?

The Expert answers:

Agree. Definitin differs from place to place, society to society. Hence its development to help those who need help. In any form or any way. All encompassing. Beneficiliaty is the watchword!

James asks…

sustainable development?

in order to achieve the notion of sustainable development, we must able to address the balance between environmental protection and socio-economic development. however the highest incidence of poverty among minorities are always occur. what is the way to eradicate poverty and what is related to sustainable development?

The Expert answers:

One way to sustain development while not raising the poverty level is to build in mandatory pecuniary debits to offset poverty increases.

Laura asks…

Sustainable development?

What are the UK Government doing to help with sustainable development?

The Expert answers:

Sustainable development is a buzzword from the UN that really means population control by restricting access to the environment. This will lead to an elite few, non elected people controlling our food, water, air, energy and housing while the general public is led like sheep to the slaughter – never suspecting until it is too late.
Harmonization is another buzzword that means all nations must conform to UN regulations even if they want higher standards. Any nation that doesn’t comply will be punished through trade sanctions.

David asks…

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?

FACTORS TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Expert answers:

Willingness to work hard and maintain change momentum. Change mindset. Change thinking. Look and take new challenges with guts! Women’s role is upped and men stop subjugating them and respect them. Www.bahai.org shows some sustainable devt around the world

John asks…

What are the costs of sustainable development, and how long will it take to achieve?

I need to include these 2 components in a 1-pg report . . . I also need to discuss these topics:

– who might oppose sustainable development ;
– what might prove to be difficult to change .

Also , by sustainable development , I mean it regards the environment~

I apologize if this is in the wrong category . Thank you in advance for your help . 🙂

The Expert answers:

Not the wrong category, just such a huge and obscure question. Many people have written entire books to answer that question. Maybe you could narrow it down a bit.

Laura asks…

eco-friendly?

I want to start an ecofriendly waterless car wash. What exactly does ecofriendly mean when dealing with cleaning products. Is silicone ecofriendly. Is there a list of chemicals that are ecofriendly? Also, if something is biodegradable does that mean it is friendly to the environment?

The Expert answers:

“Eco friendly” is not a clearly understood concept and many may offer different definitions. My preferred definition would be an activity which is environmentally sustainable in that it doesn’t use excessive resources to the detriment of the prevailing ecological system.

Any chemical – such as water or silicon – is not in itself ecologically damaging its the extent to which your use of this chemical will distort the ecology of your environment. E.g. A water based car wash may not be that damaging if you don’t use harmful detergent and you collect small amounts of naturally and sustainably obtained water.

Sandra asks…

Eco friendly?

I’m doing a project and I need to know what eco friendly houses have. Links and reasons would help too! Person who tells me the most items an eco friendly gets best answer.

Thanks!

Richard asks…

Eco-Friendly?

My parents aren’t very eco friendly at all and they aren’t too bothered about the environment. However, due to much more awareness nowadays, I’d rather be more eco friendly. What little things can I do to make a difference?
Also we recycle because we are given recyling bags but the bags say not to put in waxed cartons and I know my parents still do.

The Expert answers:

One thing you can do is to turn off your computer at night. Turning it off opposed to putting it in hibernate mode will save lots of energy. Riding your bike or taking public transportation will help. Can you encourage your parents to purchase local organic food? Not knowing how old you are makes this a little more difficult to answer. You can ask your parents to purchase only organic personal care items. There is also another really neat item you can get if you use a dish washer called Bag E Wash. This little devices fit into your dishwasher and you can put your used baggies onto the device to re-wash your baggies. Millions of baggies end up in the land-fill every year. Good Luck!

Your Questions About Green Living

Mandy asks…

How do Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) work?

Is it an incentive to use renewable energy?

The Expert answers:

The basic idea that people who feel bad about something can buy them to get rid of the guilt.

The way that they work is that a very small amount (much less than the subsidies and tax breaks given to politically correct energy) of money goes to those who operate a wind turbine or solar panel (or even methane gas recovery systems at landfills, sometimes things that would have to be built regardless of whether any carbon credits were sold), the amount of money that the carbon offset actually provides is really too small to actually encourage use of politically correct energy, especially when you consider how much bigger the subsidies are (and they really are over-subsidised compared to how much energy they produce).

Of course there are renewable energy credit systems that do actually help, just that they cost so much more that the frauds out compete them (and governments don’t seem too interested in keeping that sector honest, some such schemes are actually run by the government, including some that sell more renewable energy than they actually generate (in other areas of the economy the word used for that is fraud)).

The main purposes that renewable energy credits serve are to act as indulgences and to help fool people into believing that fossil fuels can be replaced without using nuclear power (which thereby prevents fossil fuels from actually being replaced and keeps the coal and oil companies in business).

Chris asks…

how exactly does Green-e Certified Renewable Energy Credits work?

how exactly does someone save money by buying these certificates ? does this mean that someone who pays 300 a month on gas can just buy this certificate and then it will go down to $70 a month because you went green?

The Expert answers:

I don’t think the certificates are designed to save you money. My utility company has a program called greeen energy that cost me about 1/2 of 1%, so about $10 in the summer. They will buy electricity from renewable/clean sources in the amount that the participants in the program use. This helps build the demand for renewable energy and fund new projects. Part of the program also helps with the rebates offered for homes and businesses to install solar systems.

I know you can buy credits to offset travel and a variety of other things, but again I don’t think they are designed to save money. It is a way for people who want to do their part to reduce carbon emissions to help fund programs that will help reduce CO2 in other ways.

Ken asks…

What Are Some Pros and Cons of Different Organizations that Assist With Purchasing Renewable Energy Credits?

There are two organizations that I have been considering: 1) LiveNeutral (www.liveneutral.org); and 2) Native Energy (www.nativeenergy.com).

Some issues that I am considering are: 1) non-profit vs. for-profit; 2) credits purchased from the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) vs. credits created from renewable energy sources; 3) “imaginary” market vs. real-world projects; and 4) managed by educational institution vs. managed by Native American organization. Please feel free to suggest additional criteria.

Also, if there is another organization that you think I should consider, please let me know, and please provide your reasoning for the suggestion.

Thanks!

The Expert answers:

There is a table from the Dept. Of Energy that compares various vendors and their costs. See:

http://www.eere.energy.gov/greenpower/markets/certificates.shtml?page=1

In effect, you are donating money to fund alternative energy sources (wind, solar, hydro, biogas) that subsequently feed into the nat’l power grid.

Since you are donating money, you might as well get a charitable deducation on your income taxes. The nativeenergy.com site won’t give a definitive answer on this question, but suggests you can do it.

So go with a group which is a charitable non-profit organization that clearly states donations are tax deductible. Look at your yearly electricity bills, multiply kilowatt hours by 2 cents and donate that much.

Unlike the carbon offset credits that are often nebulous and sometimes outright fraudulent, renewable energy credits (RECs) trace back to definite generating capacity that can be (and usually are) audited to make sure they are above board. (The US gov’t buys RECs, so any egregious fraud tends to get uncovered quickly.)

I think you are taking the right approach to renewable energy, and these projects will stand the test of time regardless of how the global warming issue pans out.

Despite all the bashing of the US, the graph at:

http://www.eea.europa.eu/pressroom/newsreleases/GHG2006-en

shows how the EU-25 don’t come close to meeting their Kyoto promises.

The non-Kyoto country, the US, in 2006 DECREASED CO2 emissions in by 1.4%.

I guess that signing Kyoto and then reneging somehow makes countries feel noble and good about themselves. But buying RECs that actually do something doesn’t count.

Sandy asks…

Why tax credits should not be given for using renewable energy?

For debate team we are debating the resolution that tax credits should/should not be given for using renewable energy. Please help by posting websites for and against it!

Thanks
Az0r

The Expert answers:

I don’t know any web sites but I can tell you why I don’t like the idea of tax credits for alternative energy. Tax credits are a penalty against conventional energy sources. If the alternatives are so great they shouldn’t need tax credits to make them competitive. Using tax credits to make alternative energy able to compete with conventional sources doesn’t encourage the companies that make alternatives from improving their products to compete in a free market. The tax credits have to be replaced with some other source of revenue or savings. The term “savings” is not known to the government so they raise taxes or increase the deficit. Their is also the administrative cost of monitoring the tax credits. That means more government. Let the laws of supply and demand work without government interference

Helen asks…

Why did John McCain vote AGAINST renewable energy tax credits on 8 occasions?

I thought his adds said he is for renewable energy?

Is that straight talk or double talk?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/13/opinion/13friedman.html?em

The Expert answers:

Sorry, but actually voting no would have required McCain to take a stand. Reread the article – he failed to appear for the vote 8 times. On one of those occasions, he was in his office and refused to come to the Senate floor. The man is a career politician to his core and cannot be taken at his word.

EDIT: To Cracker: Why does the government give tax breaks to oil companies? As you say, if it’s an economically feasible industry, it doesn’t need those. So you’re saying you’re with Obama on this one – we should eliminate those tax breaks and start taking some of the money back to help consumers? Now you’re thinking right!

Richard asks…

How high will gas prices have to go before the people get mad enough and force the oil companies?

to start seriously developing and instituting alternative energies?
How many wars for oil will the public accept?

The Expert answers:

You have to be careful though… Some alternative energies are just the oil companies “pretending” to have gone green…

Mike Huckabee is promoting Ethanol because he is a lobbyist for the oil commission from way back… Oil companies have been investing in Ethanol because it is controllable and won’t come from the United States… Which is very BAD for America.
(and some research indicates that the production of Ethanol leads to even more carbon emissions anyway)

Charles asks…

It’s time for some clean energy. Let’s stop the tyranny of oil!?

David asks…

What do you think of this plan for energy independence?

First off, let me say that this plan is NOT about reducing CO2, although it may or may not accomplish that. It’s about using and importing less crude oil.

1. We institute a tax on all crude oil imported or pumped in this country. This tax to be gradually raised over time so oil always has a stable floor price. That floor price (to be determined) will be enough to discourage oil use and encourage development of alternative solutions.

2. This new oil tax is to be offset with tax cuts. It will be revenue neutral. To make sure the poor and working folks aren’t screwed, those tax cuts will be spread out in payroll tax cuts, lowest income tax brackets (including EIC), and Medicare Part D co-pays for the retired folks.

3. Government is not to pick any energy winners or subsidize any alternative energy solutions. Let the free market develop it and choose it, be it shale oil, solar, electric vehicles, natural gas, whatever. Any solution that is more economically viable than oil will be a winner!
To Ncsufan: To avoid hurting lower wage earners, we would be cutting the taxes that they most pay now, like payroll taxes (see #2). By raising taxes on oil, we are artificially creating the “need” for new alternatives.

The Expert answers:

Good

Lisa asks…

Will we will have to pay more under O for:gas, utilities and every product we buy that has material energy?

George Stephanopolos did the nation a favor recently when he got O;’s budget director to admit that the cap-and-trade provision in current budget will increase energy prices for most Americans.

If it becomes law, this provision will have the government set a quota for total US greenhouse-gas emissions and then sell the ration cards to companies that emit them. IN ALL BUT NAME, THIS IS A TAX ON FOSSIL FUELS. It is projected to collect about $650 billion between 2012-2019.

According to the budget, revenues from the hidden climate tax will be split between $15 BILLION for alternativeenergy-research subsides and about $52 BILLION per year to help pay for the “MAKING WORK PAY” tax cut/WELFARE check of $800 HUNDRED for $95% of all American workers.

Of course, the SAME PEOPLE receiving these checks ($800.00) will now PAY MORE FOR GAS, UTILITIES and EVERY PRODDUCT they buy that has material energy content. How much more?

According to Iain Murray of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, the TYPICAL FAMILY SHOULD EXPECT TO PAY ABOUT $870.00 MORE A YEAR, almost exactly offsetting the check from the government.

So the net fiscal effect of the combined program of cap-and-trade and MAKING WORK PAY is for the fed government to take about $75 billion per year with one hand, cycle it though the government apparatus, and give most of it back through explicit checks to individuals with the other hand – with a mere $15 BILLION per year siphoned off to fund Son Of SynFuels.

Not to be crassly political, but it will also have the effect of transferring wealth from states that disproportionaly vote for Republicans to those that disproportionately vote for Democrates.

environmental issues in africa?

sustainability and availability in africa and the social, economic, and political factors that make resource management challenging.

The Expert answers:

The question is not clear… One must guess what is behind teh phrase. And there is perception of unbalanced issues! Of course, there are environmental problems in Africa, however the resources to solve those problems are not there or are not sustainable. There are still too many decades of destruction and unfair economic exploitation that provoke this ever-worsening problem on environment management in Africa. Peace, training and education, investment and democracz could be some of the kez-words for the correct answer.

John asks…

Why is there a high demand for environmental workers in Australia and in Sudan, Africa?

I’ve been looking at the different job opportunities abroad for an environment, health and safety practitioner, and I have noticed a “great demand” for such workers in Australia and in Sudan. I had this impression that the demand was high in those countries, since there were several agencies that have posted their requirements for 25, 50 and even 100 environmental professionals in various websites.

I wonder why is there a demand for numerous envi. workers? What are the current environmental issues that these countries are facing?

The Expert answers:

Sudan is a big producer of oil, so that’s probably why there are a lot of jobs in need over there. The US doesn’t import from them because of the war going on over there, but that hasn’t stopped China from buying their oil. I would think twice before heading off to work in a wore torn 3rd world country if I were you!

Australia is really big into mining, so I’m assuming that most of the jobs you’re seeing are for mining companies and such. In fact, Australia just elected a new president (or is it Prime Minister down there?) who I’ve heard is going to sign the Koyoto treaty, so maybe a lot of businesses there are preparing for that.

What type of engineers work in the field of sustainable energy?

What type of engineers work in the field of sustainable energy? For example solar power energy, wind energy, wave energy, water current energy. Would it be environmental engineering, civil or Mechanical?

The Expert answers:

Typically mechanical or chemical… But mostly engineers who work for companies that survive only on government subsidies and tax breaks… ’cause it ain’t sustainable.

Linda asks…

How much more sustainable timber cost more than timber from unknown source? ?

I am doing a survey on how much more sustainable timber sources cause, and am trying to make a statement that some of these may be green opportunists who jack up the price, riding the green wave. I need to make a fair comparison with facts to support…. please help if you know if any webpage or you have data to help me with.
Yah, is there any data to support my hypothesis that many of the suppliers are exploiting ‘green’ as their value-adding factor, their selling point?

The Expert answers:

Generally you come to a conclusion after looking at the evidence.

Michael asks…

If green energy production is cheaper and more sustainable why do energy suppliers charge extra price for th?

Despite all energy supplers being fed into the national grid, suppliers such as Eon want to charge a premium if you wish to opt for green produced electricity.i,e.wind,wave or hydro.

The Expert answers:

It is not cheaper and producers now do not care if it is sustainable, that will only matter when we use up other fuels.

John asks…

What the hell is wrong with Sustainable energy commercials?! You can’t put a windmill in your gas tank!?

One I heard started out like this…

500 billion dollars are being spent and taken out of america every year for oil…

Then it says the wave of the future is here…then it shows windmills and solar panels…WTF?!

Dose that make any since? I mean somebody who was making that commercial probably spent enough time working on it to know that you can’t go from trying to find an answer to oil to freaking windmills and solar planels!

Is this just to trick americans into thinking there IS a freaking replacement for oil?

So why show them?

The Expert answers:

Electric cars.
And cheap sustainable energy = solar and wind energy.
Hybrid cars are half way there already.

Carol asks…

Is wind power/ hydro power really a good idea?

I’ve been researching this idea for a while now, and I’d like some other opinions. Based on physical laws, energy cannot just be made. It has to come from somewhere. By harnessing wind and waves, we are taking energy from the oceans and from the air. To be clear, wind turbines slow the wind, and hydro power slows the waves. If that happens on a large scale, I think we would have a different eco-problem on our hands other than global warming. The fact that wind cannot spread pollen, or push clouds where they need to go. And the waves wont spread plankton and other microscopic neccessities, and it could alter key ocean currents on the planet. Is this a valid arguement? It seems that fission or fusion might be our only hope for sustainable energy.

The Expert answers:

They’re not a bad idea on an individual basis, but they’re not too reliable yet and shouldn’t be taxpayer funded. Geothermal energy is the best in my opinion, while it won’t give you any electricity it provides a basically free way to heat or cool your home. Where I am it gets very cold and I wish I had it here.

Don’t worry over the effects of generating power. Anything that happens as a result goes back to normal in seconds. Windmills will not slow the wind at all, just capture some of the energy while it flows by. To generate hydro power you need a dam, and they’re always built on rivers. In the St. Lawrence river there is a huge one. The company that constructed it also built ‘fish ladders’ so that marine life wouldn’t be affected in their swim upriver for spawning.

Nuclear power is still the cleanest overall and the most reliable.

What’s your reaction to this environmental court ruling?

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/may/27/fireworks-shows-need-environmental-review/

In a nutshell, environmentalists won a court case, which could put an end to a lot of 4th of July fireworks, and even put more regulations on birthday parties held at parks.

Environmentalists want fireworks organizers to submit to an environmental impact study before the government issues a fireworks permit.

Since environmental impacts are very costly and take a long time, there could be a lot of cancellations of fireworks shows.

Is this small paragraph grammatically correct?

The following report covers the meeting held by the ____ Planning Commission on February, 2, 2011, which focused on the topic of _____ Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Natural Resources of the city of _____.
The attendance of a Planning Committee meeting is relevant to an Environmental Science course because city council meetings amend laws, develop policies, and ultimately make decisions that have an effect on the community as a whole. One of the fundamental learning outcomes of Environmental Science is to recognize and evaluate the important environmental issues we face today, and how we as individuals affect the environment, whether it is a major or a minor effect.

***The “_____” the underlining is for private secure information (the city I live in)

Thankies 🙂

The Expert answers:

~there is no comma after “February;” change this to -> “on February 2, 2011”
– I don’t get why you would capitalize the first letters in “Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Natural Resources of the city of ____,” unless if it is a VERY long name of an organization, or something.
– I would just change, “which focused on the topic of _____ Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Natural Resources of the city of _____,” into, “which focused on the topic of _____ parks, recreations, open spaces, and natural resources.” (this also goes with the other “unusual” capitalizations)
~ You don’t need the “Planning” in “Planning Committee meeting” -> “Committee meeting” should be good enough; it means the same thing without further complicating the sentence.

– hmm everything else seems fine, but then again, it’s midnight, and I have a 3 hour test tomorrow:P Maybe I’ll reread your paragraph when I’m NOT lacking sleep (:

~Oh! Also, it’s not grammatically correct to end a sentence in a preposition in this case… Just saying

PS. Sorry, but it’s kind of hard to understand your sentences without actually knowing what you’re talking about, and the structure should depend on the meaning:P

Alternative energy jobs – what should I study at university to get one?

I would very much like to work in this field. However, not as an engineer or any technical person, I’d rather work with the sales/management part of the business. I am really enthusiastic about environmental stuff, but Physics is my weaker side. Do you think they would hire me if I studied something like Business Management or International Trade? If necessary, would it be sufficient if I learned the technical stuff as a post grad?

The Expert answers:

The best places to learn about this stuff is not at any university. Vocational schools dedicated to green energy are the best place to gain a useful degree with wind/solar/hydro/geo. You should definitely learn the technical aspects – these new energies are all about technology, which is rapidly developing. If you want to be able to sell it, you have to know and be able to talk it. And, the vocational schools offer great classes with business management – knowing that a lot of their students in this field will go on to create or start their own micro-businesses with green energy (very common in the U.S. To do this).

Will Obama pull a magical ace out of the hole and create 4 million high paying alternative energy jobs in 3?

… years?

Hasn’t Obama been telling us that green energy is cheaper than coal, oil, natural gas, etc and will make this economy soar?

The Expert answers:

Why 4 million? We are quite a distance from green energy but if we don’t start on an alternative to OPEC reliance, we wouldn’t be able to get to the jobs anyway.

Donna asks…

Jobs that require an AAS in Alternative Energy?

I’m thinking about getting my Associates in Applied Science for Alternative Energy and was wondering what kind of jobs I would be looking at. Any ideas as to what jobs require this? What would the pay be? How much more would I make with a Bachelors?

The Expert answers:

An associates degree is hardly worth the trouble. You might be able to bead out someone for a job that only requires a HS diploma or GED.

Mark asks…

Don’t alternative energy sources create jobs as well?

There seems to be a false dichotomy among the (apparently oil loving? why?) Republicans and those of us who support developing alternative energy sources. It seems to me that if, say, solar or wind energy became the dominant energy sources for America, that many jobs would also be created in maintaining these energy sources, without the messy fallout of things like the BP oil spill. Is this another example of cons irrationally holding onto the harmful past?
Oil jobs are detrimental to our environment and future sustainability as a race (the human race, that is) .. government help in creating non-threatening energy industries is a far better use of taxpayer money than wars and military spending, as antiquated forms of energy such as oil are a far bigger threat than your average foreign nation currently.

The Expert answers:

Yes, we need to move to other resources. It would create more jobs. We are suck up and depend too much on oil.

I’m an MBA student interested in marketing alternative energy technology, where are the jobs?

I’m an MBA student in New York City looking for a marketing internship in alternative energy, especially in emerging technology. I’ve been searching the web and have found a few leads, but I need more help. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for me?

The Expert answers:

I’m a current Kellogg student and am facing a similar issue. Just a few findings – there are organizations that are helping increase the adoption and the utilization of renewable energy, such as CommunityEnergy. However, a colleague of mine suggested that if you want to really see work on alternative energy, join a large energy company and work in the renewable energy group. I believe your best bet will be in Texas, particularly Houston. If you’re looking for international developments, look at operations in SE Asia. I hope that helps.

Your Questions About Green Living

John asks…

Are there any trade schools for renewable energy technician?

I would really love to study renewable energy to be a tech but i don’t want to go to a 2-4 year college where i have to take history… I want to learn to become a renewable energy tech i don’t know how knowing when columbus sailed is going to help me in that. I know there is one in Colorado but I’m looking for one closer to west texas. It would be even better if there was one I could start online as I will not be able to relocate for a couple of years.

The Expert answers:

Information about schools will be found below.

David asks…

Where can I find a house plan that incorporates renewable energy and ecologically friendly concepts.?

I want to build a new house that is as independent from the power grid as possible, and recycles as much water and waste and possible. This is in the Dallas, Texas area. I am interested in solar, wind and hydrogen energy hybrids.

The Expert answers:

The website linked below may help generate ideas. I would say that the most “ecologically friendly” property would be a house that isn’t too big for your needs and doesn’t take up a large plot of land. You save land space and heating/cooling money with a correctly sized home.

To be “as independent from the power grid as possible” you will need to have a special arrangement with your utility company. I am pretty sure that anywhere in the USA electric utilities are required by law to buy back any excess power generated by its customers at market value, but equipment must be installed such that the customer generating power is disconnected during a power outage (so problems can be safely fixed). So, first step is to contact your utility company to see if you can come to an arrangement to implement your renewable energy ideas at your property.

As far as what sources to use, solar seems like a sure bet in Texas. Wind might be beneficial, depending on where you live. Hydrogen might work depending on what you use it for and if you can obtain it (not likely). If you are really hardcore, there are methods for obtaining methane from the organic waste that is produced. The methane can then be burned to produce additional electricity (probably not economical for just one household, though).

Ruth asks…

What is renewable energy content?

I live in Texas and am looking for a new energy provider. I was looking through the options and it can be filtered by “renewable energy content” ranging from 2% to 100%. What do I want here? I don’t know what it means.
So do I want one that is 100%? Or less? Or the least?

The Expert answers:

That’s the percentage of the energy you receive that comes from renewable sources and not fossil fuels.

For instance:
Company A provides energy to house B. Company A sends house B electricity that is 65% from coal-fired facilities, 25% from wind turbines, and 10% from solar panels. Company A has a renewable energy content of 35%.

Helen asks…

Should the rest of the country follow Texas’ lead on energy?

Texas‘ economy is doing better than most of the rest of the country. The state’s unemployment rate is only 8.2%. One major reason appears to be the transition to low-carbon energy sources.

“As it has for decades, energy is driving Texas‘ economy. But it’s not because the state’s wells are gushing crude. In November 2009, Texas wells produced 1.08 million barrels per day, about half as much as they did in the late 1980s. In recent years, natural gas has been undergoing a renaissance. The state’s production rose about 35 percent between 2004 and 2008. And Texas has received a big boost from a different, renewable source of energy: wind.”

Texas recently surpassed 10,000 megawatts of [wind] capacity, the most by far of any state and enough to power 3 million homes, Sadler says. Wind energy is also powering employment—creating more than 10,000 jobs so far. And it and has attracted foreign companies, including Danish turbine maker Vestas, Spanish renewableenergy giant Iberdrola, and Shell.”

Should the rest of the country follow Texas‘ lead on energy and move towards low-carbon sources?

The Expert answers:

Of course they should, but it’s not tat easy. A lot of Northern States, unlike Texas, have a lot of alpine environment. This makes huge areas for wind Energy nearly impossible, plus, the snow and ice will destroy them. Although some can use tidal energy not many can. In order to switch, each state must do it on its own tailoring to it’s own conditions.
