Your Questions About Green Living

Lizzie asks…

A newspaper poll asked respondents if they trusted “eco friendly” labels on cleaning products.?

Out of 1000 adults surveyed, 498 responded “yes.” We would like to test if the proportion of respondents that trust these labels is at least 50%.

The correct alternative hypothesis is
Question 4 options:
A)
p = 0.50
B)
p ≤ 0.50
C)
p > 0.50
D)
p ≥ 0.50
E)
p < 0.50

The Expert answers:

E)
p < 0.50

Helen asks…

what products are not eco/animal friendly? which ones are?

just curious.

The Expert answers:

Most modern products aren’e eco friendly in one way or another! Animal friendly products usually don’t have animals in them, i.e. Leather is not animal friendly! A lot of cosmetics were once tested on animals and now aren’t, peta.com does a pretty definitive list somewhere on the site. You can even order a little leaflet thing with a list of good places to shop to save animals/the world. The best thing to do is to ignore all the media hype about the ‘kindest’ places to shop and only buy what you need. If you need lots of paper, use it but recycle it!

Charles asks…

Eco friendly hair spray?

Does anyone know of any eco friendly hairspray products that I could get at a CVS? My mom uses tons of it and I want to get her a can so she could try it out and maybe stop using the one shes already using.

The Expert answers:

Anything in a spray bottle not in an aerosol can. If in an aerosol can check for no CFC’s on the bottle.

Ken asks…

What classifies a product like wood blinds to be eco-friendly?

I have a client who wants ‘ecofriendly‘ window treatments and I have no knowledge of this field

The Expert answers:

This site sells only eco-friendly window treatments and curtains:

http://www.pristineplanet.com/organic-eco-friendly/window-treatments/5732_a_0.html

Hope that helps!

Steven asks…

What is the most eco-friendly way of packaging food product for sale?

I want to start a business and I want to sell food, ie fruit, juicy food.
The food is not going to be hot and so I don’t need temperature protection from the container.
I was thinking about corn-made plastic (because I thought it will biodegrade but it turns out to be not as convenient as I thought it was). The best solution is some substance that will not be a burden to the landfill. Any suggestion?
But wouldn’t glass be too dangerous? And heavy too…

I want my produc to be family-friendly.

The Expert answers:

When looking for packaging, one should also consider its safety for the users. Kudos! 😉

Recycled plastic bottles actually contains more virgin materials than new bottles and more energy are used in the process. It’s a mixed review: you’re reducing the size of landfill but you’re also using more energy and resources.

I used pens made with corn-base plastic, molds grow on them before I can finish the ink. I’m not sure how well it works with food.

Glass is often used in eco-friendly food stores. If you are worry about safety, you might want to use cans. Metals can be melted and remade into something else.

For uncooked food, like whole tomatoes or berries, you can try Earthcycle Packaging. I’m not sure if this brand is avaliable in your area, but there should be companies who does backyard compostable containers from renewable resources.

For cooked food or wet stuff, try Eatware. They are more durable than Earthcycle. “Eatware is made of 100% natural fibers from bamboo, sugar cane pulp, starch and water- and no chemical additives! While there are several biodegradable food container companies on the market, some potato starch based; some corn starch based, Eatware is among the most durable and safe-decomposable in the compost and dispersed in water in just two weeks.”

If these are not the configuration you want, you may still call them up and see if they can refer you to a company that does eco-friendly packaging in your area.

Your Questions About Green Living

Daniel asks…

Can anyone help me figure out what this style of clothing is?

What is this style? I’ve been trying to find out if there’s a name for it. I see it a lot on the vagabond or ecofriendly groups of people. It uses a lot of linen and rough-weave clothes in earth tones and the clothes are often slightly old-fashioned or reminiscent of costumes or clothes from other countries. Usually people either go barefoot or wear sandals. It’s not dark like grunge, not as sophisticated-looking as Bohemian, and not quite as “loud” or “light” as the hippie style. Can anyone help me out?

The Expert answers:

I don’t know that it has a name. It’s just what some of us like. I’m always barefoot, and I’ll be dressing like that again in the fall.

Chris asks…

What to do with clothes hangers?

I have about a 100 dry-cleaning hangers – mostly for slacks – and probably 200 plastic clothes hangers for clothes purchases over the last 10 years or so. I hate to throw perfectly good hangers in the recycle bin – it would be more ecofriendly and financially useful to find someone who would simply use them again. But I can’t find that “someone”. The donation centers don’t want them. Any ideas?

The Expert answers:

I always return my dry cleaner hangers to the dry cleaner. They are happy to reuse them. As far as the others, try posting them on Craigslist.com or Freecycle.org

Nancy asks…

Why doesn’t the UK government pay us to recycle?

I live in the UK and I am very eco friendly. My family recycle all of our plastic, tins, paper, clothes and don’t get payed for it. Why should we waste time going to a recycling bank and putting away all our stuff when we cant get a reward? Shouldn’t there be something simple like £5 a kilo? I don’t mind going to the recycling bank, it is kinda fun, I just hate people not getting encouraged to recycle when only 17% of the UK’s waste is recycled

The Expert answers:

I agree more people would do it if they were paid for it

John asks…

Need fellow tree hugger advice! plz, plz, plz help its for the good of the enviroment?

im in the enviroment club at my school and we might make a whole line of going green clothes so i need your help finding companys that have eco frienly clothes (like this http://www.inhabitat.com/2007/04/03/ts-designs-ecofriendly-t-shirt-printing/) and ink so that we can but our logo on it!

The Expert answers:

Can you sew some leaves together and make clothes?

That would really make you seem like you care about the planet.

Carol asks…

What do about lack of recycling in my town?

This year my friends and I have been trying to go green – buying organic food and clothing, switching to ecofriendly house cleaning products, fluorescent lights, bio bags, etc; but I still wish to do more. I’ve noticed that my town does not have “recycling” days so I called my town municipal building to inquire and spoke to a very sympathetic person who runs the recycling in my town – who faces the same angst I do. Currently, there is one way to recycle paper – bring it to the Marcal toilet paper factory – but there is currently no way to recycle plastic and glass, unless I drive it over to another town.

How should I go about finding local factories/business and see if they are willing to to accept recyclable materials and what way if possible to get my neighbors involved?

The Expert answers:

Double check the site www.earth911.org to see if there are any other nearby solutions. If not, I would suggest asking your city to put in recycle bins. My city has a couple large bins around the city and you can deposit certain items into them the city keeps the money, so if there is enough interest it could be a financial incentive for the city.

I also suggest looking for schools, youth groups or cities that would be willing to take in the recycling and store it untill there is a large enough quantity to make it profitable to take it to the nearest facility.

Maria asks…

Carbon emissions and ecological clothing?

So first, is the term carbon omissions or emissions? What is the difference or are they the same?

Second, what kind of fabric is ecological or environmentally friendly? Which kind of cotton is ecofriendly and which is not?

Help?

P.S. As with any other question, please do not repost or say in different words other people’s answers, I will report you. ALSO please give me summarized details, not websites.
so that’s what I thought about carbon emissions/omissions. *** was wrong.

I was told some forms of cotton are ecofriendly and some forms are not. Like Pima, Egyptian etc. What’s the protocol?

The Expert answers:

It is carbon emission. It just means that CO2 will be released from making it or emitted. Omission is forgetting something so doesn’t apply.

Cotton is carbon neutral as much as any cloths can be and it just happens to be most comfortable and usually in style.

Betty asks…

Dorky/Nerdy clothing references for nerd day?

My school is having nerd day for spirit week and since I am a senior I am going all out. I was thinking i would wear as many nerd references as possible in one outfit. So far I have:

1.) 3-D glasses with lenses popped out – Stereotype based

2.) Black Bow Tie – Because bow ties are cool. (Doctor Who reference)

3.)Tuxedo shirt tucked into black pants (pants are rolled up to be floods) – Stereotype and Erkle from family matters

4.)Hogwarts/Gryffindor Robe – Costume from when I was 11 😉 (Harry Potter reference obviously)

5.)Converse – Awesome and Doctor Who again 😉

6.)Pop Tab bracelet – Gotta be ecofriendly!

Any other ideas??

The Expert answers:

Carry around any Star Wars merchandise. Like a lightsaber or something lol.
Put tape around the middle of your glasses.
If your shirt has a pocket, wear a pocket protector and stick pens into the pocket.
Wear a sweater vest over the shirt. Maybe an argyle one.
Wear a fanny pack in the front. They look nerdy.

Ken asks…

Place where I can buy revolutionary clothing?

I am looking for t-shirts that say things with “revolutionary” meaning to them. Like eco friendly, pro hemp and marijuana, earthy colors. Does anyone know a website that would have something like this?
I wish just SOMETIMES that people wouldn’t be so quick to blurt out their opinion. How do you know what I am doing, or what I am involved in? If I focused all my time on finding clothes, I wouldn’t be asking this question. I want to buy shirts with meaningful images on them so others can see and reflect, to “spread the word”. I go to college and I have alot of people pass by me. I think a small impact is a good one. Just because I am not like MLK, the leader of a revolutionist group, doesn’t mean I don’t care. And YES I SMOKE WEED! SO WHAT! && If you drink alcohol, you have NO RIGHT so say anything about it! Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Usually when people think of revolution they think of toppling large governments and corporations that act above the law, manipulating billions of people and crushing the populaces freedom and free will… But you want to smoke pot and eat hemp burgers lol… Sigh.

Ruth asks…

My friends think I’m not respecting their choices..?

Ive been vegetarian for over 2 months, I sign petitions and write letters persuading people to change their ways, and I’ve promised myself to only buy ecofriendly makeup and clothing.
Recently, I uploaded a few pictures to facebook to spread the word about factory farms and why vegetarianism is good. I’m just speaking up for animals and standing up for what I believe in.

I tagged a few of my close friends in the pictures, just so that they could see what happens. Now they are b*tching at me and spazzing at me, calling me rude, saying i don’t respect their opinions, and telling me to take the pictures down!

i know that no one wants to see pictures like that, but they need to face the reality of it and i’m just trying to spread the awareness.

why are they getting so mad!? i show them one picture, and they are spazzing at me and calling me rude.
now i told them that if they think im rude i dont really care since im doing what iiiiiii think is right,

its so annoying,
why do you think they think that way about me?
also, just give me feedback on what i said please (:
when i say i tagged them in pictures,
i mean i took pictures off of PETA’s website of poor animals in factory farms and such and i tagged my friends in them so that they would see the pictures.
i actually did take the tags off, but they kept trying to pick fights with me about it!

The Expert answers:

Oh well in that case i think you did the wrong thing. Although you stood up for what you believed in you still hurt your friends feelings in the process. I think you should apoligize to them for hurting there feelings and doing so with their pictures without their permission. Doing so dont NOT mean your going against your believes it just means that you dont have to step on peoples feelings to get your message out to other people. Do remember that your friends respect your choices of being vegan, and that they would just like for you to respect their choices on eating meats as well.

George asks…

Eco and Wallet friendly cleaning tips?

I have wanted to clean my house and cook with more environmentally friendly products for a long time. However, everything i’ve tried is incredibly expensive! Can you give me some tips and ideas of what to buy? Thanks so much!

The Expert answers:

Here are a few ideas:

1/2 cup washing soda crystals and 4 litres warm water – this makes an effective cleaner that cuts through grease; ideal for the kitchen or bathroom.

Half clear vinegar and half water – window and glass cleaner. Just spray on then wipe dry.

1 cup bicarbonate of soda and 1 cup clear vinegar – drain cleaner. Pour the soda into the drain then slowly add the vinegar.

Bicarbonate of soda can be used to neutralise odours – just springe on dry, leave for an hour then vacuum off.

These methods are kinder to your skin and the environment but they are not as effective as branded products so you will need to use some elbow grease as well!

Chris asks…

Is stone resin an eco-friendly product?

The Expert answers:

If you mean the counter-tops, it’s man- made so yes.

Lisa asks…

Can I make my own cleaning products?

I recently stopped at the store and noticed all the nice non-toxic stuff and eco friendly cleaning products. Well, they seemed a little expensive to me. However, I really don’t want to have the poison like products (409) around my 8-month old. Even I get sick form using 409.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any tips or recipes to make my own all-purpose cleaner.

If not where can I find inexpensive natural cleaners?

The Expert answers:

Vinegar is a WONDERFUL cleaner. It works for many things.. Even as a carpet shampoo, or fabric softner.

Susan asks…

new eco-friendly product coming out in 2009?!?

what are some? or do you know of any websites listing some??
thank youuuuu

The Expert answers:

Natural Home Magazine web site has a list of the top 10 New Eco-Friendly products in 2009. These include

ModRocks 100 percent recycled glass mosaic tiles
Caliz clay paint
Ecoclear Rooglue
In2Green dog blanket
Nighttime face moisturizer

The complete list (including links to these products) is on the website.

Robert asks…

eco-friendly kitchen ideas?

My mom is new to green living and asked me for ideas for redoing her kitchen. I mentioned energy star appliances, if she plans to upgrade, and some recycled countertop material. Have you used any good ecofriendly kitchen products in your home?

The Expert answers:

How exciting! Big things and little things count. We are starting to remodel and are considering tile or hardwood for kitchen floor. Avoid products that outgas formaldehyde (particle/laminated wood cabinets) or carcinogens, like vinyl flooring. You can get true linoleum instead of vinyl. Use no-VOC paints. Some energy companies now offer rebates for using energy-star appliances-she could call her local electric company. Work in space for recycling bin, drying rack for dishtowels, attractive containers for vinegar and baking soda, and a place to store reusable shopping/grocery bags. When choosing surface materials consider longterm maintenance. Anything that can’t be cleaned with baking soda, vinegar, or earthfriendly cleaners won’t be replaced in my house. For her birthdays, etc., give her good cookware (no teflon) and new glass containers for food storage–try to get rid of as much plastic as possible. Give her natural cleaning products with rose or lavender scent. They clean well and are earth kind. Give her some canvas grocery tote bags–actually easier to carry than plastic. Being green doesn’t have to mean you suffer. I congratulate you both.

Thomas asks…

how do you suggest i move my clothes?

i’m moving on wednesday, and my room is far from packed up. my clothes are spread out all over the floor and i dont know how i’m going to move them. i put the dirty clothes in a “dirty” garbage bag, and i have a “clean” garbage bag. (the washing machines are at the new house)…i also have boxes to move the clothes in but i’m looking for a more eco friendly, easier way to move them all..thankyou!

The Expert answers:

More eco-friendly? The most eco-friendly way of moving them is to grab an armful and walk to your new place with them, but I don’t think you’d really want to do that uness you’re moving less than a block away. Put the clothes in big garbage bags or in boxes, move them, and re-use the bags or boxes or recycle them.

Helen asks…

Porcelain, plastic or aluminum washing machine drum?

We’re looking at a new clothes washer this weekend (woo-hoo!) ;)Considering the wear and tear on clothes, the durability of the drum (life expectancy), and “ecofriendly” (not dispensing toxins onto the clothes), which one is the best to go with?
LOL, I don’t know if I’ll ENJOY doing laundry from here on out, but I’m hoping it will make it less of a hassle! 🙂

The Expert answers:

I like the whirlpool stuff that’s out there. I would stay away from a plastic tub, even if it’s over metal. Just look at a shower or dishwasher rack to see why. Go with porcelain, or stainless steel, they are proven to stand the test of time. If you are looking for a front loader, whirlpool duets are good. And whirlpools top loaders are good also. They last a long time, my sisters family got 15 years out of hers, with a family of seven. Ours with just the two of us, is going on 10. And neither of us has had any major repairs. I just “rebuilt” our dryer because it started to squeak when it ran. Whirlpool makes a kit to fix it for just $30.00. The kit came with fantastic instructions and all of the parts and i was able to do it in just over an hour. It runs like new again. I think that whirlpool is consumer friendly and you can get parts for them from your local sears parts store or appliance parts store. Good luck, and does this mean that you will like doing laundry now? Lol!

Nancy asks…

wot kind of products can i use that are good for the environment and cheap?

I’m 13 and have gone quite eco friendly. i want to start using toiletries and makeup that are not tested on animals and clothes and things which are good for the environment and animals. with no harsh chemicals. can you make sure they are available in the uk cos that’s where i live.

also, is there any foundations that do not block pores?

can you make sure they are quite cheap because i cant afford the body shop stuff and things like that.

thank you

The Expert answers:

Bare Minerals

Laura asks…

Do you make your own cleaning product?

My son is 6 months old and I have decided to start using non-toxic cleaning products for everything from washing clothes to household cleaners. I would normally just go a buy ecofriendly ones however where I live they are not available to me.

Could you tell me what you use, how you make them (possibly with measures) and are you satisfied with the results. Are you sure that they really kill all the germs that chemical detergent do?

Thank you so much in advance.

The Expert answers:

I use my own cleaning products for everything except the tub…..I just can’t get it clean enough.

I use a 1/4 vinegar to 3/4 water with a drop or two or dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle for the kitchen and bathroom
1/4 vinegar and 3/4 water in a bucket for dusting the woodwork and general dusting
I mop with vinegar and water and a drop or two of dishwashing liquid.
Vinegar/water 1/2 1/2 for windows

I have read to sprinkle baking soda in the tub and use it…..but it doesn’t work for me. I personally use a natural bathtub cleaner from Wal Mart.

2. I only ever buy free range eggs.
3. I’m a vegetarian so I don’t eat any meat.
4. Honestly, I’m not sure. Thanks for the idea though, I’ll check that out but I only really use shampoo, toothpaste, that sort of thing.

Charles asks…

where can i find an article on green products?

where can i find an article which defends that ecofriendly products truly exist and there is no such thing as “green-washing” thanks

The Expert answers:

Unfortunately, greenwashing does exist. BUT there are countless products out there that are truly eco-friendly. The key is simply knowing what to look for when evaluating a product’s green-worthiness. The Green Checklist at AltFuels Now is a great resource where you can find a break down of what makes a product green, and what doesn’t, including:

Appliances
Food
Beauty Products
Cleaning Products
Clothes
Baby Products
Pet Products
Home construction products

Sandy asks…

Is fair trade any more eco-friendly than non-fair trade products? Give reason please :)?

The Expert answers:

Yes and no, sorry.

Why the answer is, by definition, no.

Fair-trade is in reference to the wages and working conditions that the laborers undergo while creating the product. There’s nothing in fair trade, however, that says people can’t be fairly paid to do a job that creates lots of pollution and is harmful to the environment.

Why the answer is actually yes.

Fair-trade is part of a broader more liberal social movement that is more about small business, sustainability, and other hippie-type stuff. It is much more likely for fair trade organization and fair trade workers to support environmental sustainability. Many fair trade organizations will explicitly address this by incorporating environmental standards when certifying companies for fair trade status.

Sandra asks…

Is fair trade any more eco-friendly than non-fair trade products? Give reason please :)?

The Expert answers:

Fair trade usually refers to food, so I’ll talk about it that way here. Fair trade food means that the farmers who grew the food were payed fair amounts of money, and that th company selling doesn’t get as much money. A lot o fair trade products are Natural/organic, mostly because the people selling it care more about healthy food and good working conditions then other companys, witch tend to care more about profits.

Robert asks…

what are some ideas to re-invent an (everyday) product to make it more ECO friendly?

I dont want tips but rather an idea to re-invent a product that already hasn’t been made more eco friendly

The Expert answers:

If you had an idea then you’d be rich.

Donna asks…

Need name for eco friendly pet store?

My mom and I are opening an eco friendly pet store that will offer biodegradable/nature friendly products and all natural pet foods etc. and we are trying to come up with a catchy name that portrays that. Any suggestions would be great. So far we’ve come up with “Organic Paws Boutique” or “Eco Chic Pet Boutique” what do you think?

The Expert answers:

If you want to convey the idea of eco-friendliness, you almost don’t have any choice but to use the word “Green.”

I suggest you name the store “Green Paws” and use a graphic of green paw prints running behind the name, which should be in dark brown or deep blue.

It’s a play off the idea of a green thumb- it subtly suggests that animals want to be environmentally sound because they’re animals.

It may not be as flashy as Eco Chic Pet Boutique, but it is more brandable, advertisable, memorable, and will lend itself to signage better (short is better because it allows you to use larger words within the legally allowable sign size for your area).

The downside is that acquiring the domain name might not be as easy. Someone has registered the idea with GoDaddy and may be open to an offer- perhaps some common stock would suffice if you’re planning to incorporate. The good news is that it isn’t actually in use already.

I’m answering the question as if you wanted to compete with Petco and Petsmart though, which would be a bit ambitious since both can leverage the eco-friendly idea more effectively at this point if they so choose.

If you’re thinking, at most, about a very small chain of small-store-front specialty stores in places like San Francisco, Boulder CO, and Seattle, then a longer name perfectly fine. I really like Eco Chic Pet Boutique. It’s really clever and conveys a very precise message.

Lizzie asks…

…”eco-friendly nuclear energy”… Doesn’t that sound like the worst oxymoron ever created, to you, too??

Makes me gag… New and improved radioactivity! Ecofriendly radiation products, good for your health and the environment – lasts far more than 20,000 years!! I should be a copy-writer and make up more lies for corporate benefits…
Regarding my science/chemistry background, yes, in fact, I’m well beyond 6th-grade science… Carried my weight years ago with passing grades with organic chemistry, physics, and calculus at the university level… How about you?

The Expert answers:

Why leave nuclear material laying around the ground where it occurs naturally? If this were PCB’s you would be all for cleaning up the waste and disposing it at a safe dump site.

The same happens with nuclear power.

Nuclear power is used, shipped across the country, and disposed of in safe sites everyday. You just aren’t aware this is going on.

Nuclear power is safe, clean, reliable, and available without producing any green house gases. We would be fools to not use nuclear.

Nuclear power is nothing more than heating water with a hot rock. Why are liberals so scared of new and modern technology?

I have invented a environmentally friendly clothes dryer for the lady’s?

This revolutionary Eco device will not only leave your clothes iron ready it will also provide fresh air and exercise.
My invention consists of two heavy rollers on a stand driven by means of a large rotating handle , you insert your garment between the two rollers , and turn the handle thus removing water.
This device should be operated out side , do you think it will catch on , and what should I call it?

Good Deal on Clothing Dryers?

My dryer at home is broken and my family is thinking of buying a new one, right now were using a really shi**y one. I’m looking for dryers, not to expensive (under $1000) that is ecofriendly and we’ll save us money overall. So if anyone can give me a website link where i can find some good deals, that would be great!

The Expert answers:

I would try craigslist.com

to see if anybody in your state/city has one for sale at a decent price.

I always find stuff on craigs list.

Its amazing

James asks…

Do any of you use soap flakes in your washing machines instead of the powder?

I’m trying to be more eco friendly and avoid harsh chemicals.

I read on the side of my soapflake packet that it can be used with a washing machine so I did a load of laundry and they seem to have come out okay.

Do any of you use this instead of the powder and does it work as well? What do you do about stains? Does it work on the white stuff?

I was using Persil.

The soapflakes have rinsed out of the clothes okay and there doesn’t seem to be any residue.

The Expert answers:

I do prefer liquid detergent as well….if you’re concerned about being eco-friendly, you could make your own detergent.

I found this recipe (though I’ve never used it or know anyone who has, it does sound like it is pretty straight-forward and it does sound like it would work….given you can find the materials!)

Laura asks…

When making paper, what methods/things could you add/change to the procedure to make the product cloth-like?

When making paper what methods or things could you add/change to the procedure to make the product cloth-like?

For our science project, we are trying to make biodegradable and disposable clothing from recycled paper.

It is better if the methods that are suggested are ecofriendly, not too hard or complicated and can be accomplished without the use of industrial machinery and chemicals that are hard to find/acquire.

It would be really great if that something you suggested or answered is something that you can merely add to the (paper) pulp to get the desired results of it being more cloth-like.

It also would be great if you included an explanation with your methods and suggestions.

BTW i am also interested in good paper-making methods.

Thanks! 🙂 PEACE. 😀

Need to find cheap ‘hippie’ clothing?!?

I want to find a store that has the same style as this store; http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/category.jsp?navAction=jump&navCount=40&id=CLOTHES
But at a more reasonable price and if it can be found, maybe one that’s a little more eco friendly? If any one can give me any point in the right direction I’d be more than grateful!
Thanks in advance:)

Betty asks…

What is considered a hippie or a hipster?

Is a hippie / hipster someone who is Eco friendly, eats organic, loves life, dresses like a hipster, makes clothes and is creative and imaginative?

The Expert answers:

A hippie and a hipster are two entirely different things.

Hippies do not dress like hipsters. Hipsters are generally arseholes who shop at thrift stores, do everything “ironically”, and like to pretend they discovered certain bands and things before everyone else. Hippies are what you described in your original question except they tend to dress in flowy clothing.

Robert asks…

How to do laundry without using detergent?

Do you know any ecofriendly and cheap ways of doing laundry without using washing powder/liquid etc, while still leaving clothes clean and smelling nice?
Can’t stand thinking what all these chemicals are doing to the planet, as well as household products being tested on animals.
Thanks for any ideas!

The Expert answers:

I ran out of detergent once and just put the machine on with none. Clothes came out fine and clean. Hung the washing out in the sunshine to dry and they smelled lovely.

Ruth asks…

Eco-Friendly, Inexpensive and/or Homemade Cleaning Products … For Tough Cleaning Jobs? Can You Help?

I have way too many cleaning products! Some of them (toilet cleaner, stainless polish, carpet cleaner) have only one purpose, and I’m hoping to eliminate some of these “specialty” products and replace them with a few “all-purpose” cleaners. Something I can mix up and keep in a spray bottle, maybe?

I already use diluted white vinegar for most light, everyday cleaning, and diluted bleach to sanitize. But I’d like to find inexpensive, ecofriendly alternatives to some of the harsh products used for:

Pet stains on carpet
Kitchen grease build-up on the range
Glass shower doors and fiberglass shower surround
Toilet cleaning (safe for septic)
Stainless sink and appliances

Any suggestions? If I could make these products myself, that would be even better!

Thanks for your help!

I

The Expert answers:

For the pet stains, you could try a dilution of tea tree oil and water – let sit on stain for a while and then soak up liquid with a rag. I would test this on a hidden patch of carpet first though.

For the glass shower doors and surround, use rubbing alcohol to get all the residual bought cleaning product off the surface and then you can just use white vinegar (not diluted) in a spray bottle. This of course works for mirrors and chorme fixtures. If there is hard water build up on the glass doors, let it sit for a while – although it may not get all that residue off right away. I also have a squeegy that I use to squeegy off the water from the tub surround – it reduces the chance that you’ll get mineral build up on the surround (that stuff that looks like water drops dried up, but you can’t seem to get rid of it easily).

For my stainless steel sink and such, I just use a baking soda paste that i make as the scrubber (it seems to work like ajax or comet) and then rinse. You tend to get a filmy residue afterward rinsing with water so i just take a dry flannel cloth and wipe it up (a piece of old pjs that I ripped up works wonders! – or I get them from the second hand store for CHEAP and rip them up if I am running low on cloths). Also, you can use 1/2 a lemon dipped in borax as a more abrasive cleaner but I never have a lemon around so I haven’t used it often (I find the soda works well to get grime off stuff anyway). Now that I think of it – try that for your tub surround too! It’ll scrub off scuzy stuff!!! If you want to polish the stainless steel after you’ve cleaned it, you can use mineral oil too.

Borax in water is a great way to get grease out and off of stuff.

I know you didn’t ask but I see that you have a septic field/tank so I thought you might be interested to know about laundry softner that you can use in your washing cycle rather than using those sheets… And this literally costs you about 3 cents per load
In a large container mix
2 c white vinegar
2 c baking soda
4 c water!
Shake everytime before using (the soda settles).
Get yourself a downey ball from the store, fill it with the regular amount of homemade softner. It’ll release in the rinse cycle! I use it and it works wonders!

I am not sure about safe septic cleaners for toilets. I would assume that using borax in water would suffice. Apparently 1/2 cup borax in 1 gallon of water meets the most sanitary requirements. I think it is considered the enviro-bleach!!

Hope that helps!!!

Lisa asks…

Being eco-friendly………?

Whats the benefit of using Ecofriendly products? And whats the importance of recycling?

The Expert answers:

Eco-friendly produce doesn’t leach nasty chemicals into the environment and the more people who buy these products, the more likely mainstream companies will start to supply such products. Ever since I gave up cleaning the loo with bleach based products and started using unbleached loo paper, a green tree frog has started visiting our sewerage pipes. Some nights I can hear a big gurgle when I turn the light on, as it makes a quick getaway.
I switched to eco friendly products a couple of months ago, and that includes ALL my cosmetics too. I did it because it’s unatural to put nasty chemicals into or onto our bodies.
Recycling is important because it means we are reusing our planets resources instead of constantly depleting them.
