Your Questions About Green Living

Mary asks…

How could renewable energy sources be used to meet a household’s needs?

Consider the following issues:

What renewable sources of energy are available?

Which sources could be used to supply a household’s needs? How could each source be used?

Where would the home have to be located to use each source?

What equipment would be needed? Where would this equipment be located?

What backup systems should be included?

For all you smart people out there, please answer all of these questions!

The Expert answers:

Renewable sources:
solar
wind
tide
wave
geothermal, while not renewable, is often classed in this area as it is inexhaustable.

Depends on the household and where it is located. Windy area, use wind power. Lots of sun, use solar power.

Solar array would be on the roof. Wind generator would be on a tower.
You will need a large array of batteries to supply power when the sun/wind is not available. Alternatively, sell power back to the electric utility company and use power from them during periods of no sun or wind.

If this is an isolated house with no access to the power grid, I’d have a diesel generator for backup.

Carol asks…

How much does it usually cost to convert to renewable energy in the Philippines?

Are there local manufacturers in the Philippines where small homeowners can buy or get service in installing equipments for solar panelling and the likes? maybe even bio-source energy?

If renewable energy is already available, is there also a program for selling (i’m taking small scale) excess energy back to the energy grid in the Philippines?

The Expert answers:

Yup, Solar Electric Company Inc. Www.solarelectric.com.ph. This is for personal use–I do not know about selling back excess energy. Renewable energy is not very popular/common yet, I would assume namely due to the initial layout for the panels, etc.

There is also a Solarhart distributor here but I misplaced the business card.

John asks…

What does it take to make Renewable Energy Economically viable?

Workable energy resource requirements, Independent of being Renewable:
1)Energy available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.
2)At retail level directly compete with energy resources for today’s activity – if not, sellable spin-off benefits to subsidize the cost.
3)Transportable
4)Technology available.
5)No more environmentally harmful than competing energy resources.
6)Supplies close enough to consumer that distribution losses due to capacity doesn’t become an issue.
7)Politicians that back any solution be able to explain it to their constituents.
The area below the question wasn’t answering the question, but the breath of the question.

I’ve heard you are brilliantly creative. Economically there is at least 1 item more disastrous than investing in renewable energy infrastructure, not having a replacement for fossil fuel. I don’t wish to taint your creativity with my solution. The governments have tryed thinking small with little addition to supply. I’ve gone the opposite route to change the economics of Renewable Energy.

Please be as creative as the person was that during WW II came up with running the exhaust through aircraft feul tanks to mitigate possibily of explosition when shot.

The Expert answers:

To answer your primary question, it just needs to be less expensive than fossil fuels…oil in particular.

1. Very few “direct” renewable sources are available non-stop. A few would be tidal power, geothermal power and hydroelectric power. There are many “indirect” sources, such as biofuels (ethanol, biodiesel, methane) which are the process of extracting energy from materials.

2. Nothing is really practical (at this point) to compete. Oil is still too cheap.

3. Storage either in liquid fuel form or conversion to electricity offers the two easiest ways to move large amounts of energy.

4. There’s many viable technologies available today, but they are under continuous refinement to make them better, more efficient, less costy, and ultimately, more competitive

5. This one is always fun. Wind and hydroelectric don’t pollute, but one is blamed for killing migratory birds and the other is hated for destroying habitats surrounding rivers. Both offer the most promise as the next best source of energy compared to fossil fuels.

6. Well, this depends on whether the consumer is in an energy rich or energy poor area. If you live in an area where there’s ample sun, good wind, and/or rivers you can dam up, then you’re living close to where you can produce it. If you can’t produce enough energy from the sources immediately available to you, then you will either need to conserve more or import it.

7. Politicians are likely only going to back solutions that prove to be overwhelmingly beneficial to their constituents. You will get corn belt pols that back ethanol for the obvious positive economic impact that it will have on their areas. Likewise, wind in areas that it could prove beneficial.

There is no one magic bullet for every energy need, that needs to be understood. Some sources will win over others, based on the application and its availability. But until oil gets more expensive (like over $100 per barrel) then most alternative sources just simply can’t economically compete with today’s renewable harnessing technology.

Charles asks…

Who are some important people in renewable energy history?

I need to do a biography on a significant person in renewable energy, but I can’t find anything on the Internet. Could you please send me a site where I can find a biography?

The Expert answers:

Look up T. Boone Pickens. He is a former oil man and corporate raider who has a ton of money and wants to do wind farms all over the place.

He became famous in the 1980’s be acquiring big oil companies then selling them off (in whole or in part) and made a ton of money.

Paul asks…

What kinds of jobs can this renewable energy certificate get me?

The courses that are required are chemistry fundamentals, basic electricity, applied alternative and renewable energy, and technical math 2. It’s a 14 credit program.

Carol asks…

How would economists, sociologists, and ecologists view sustainable development?

Sustainable development is now a broadly accepted ideal, but individuals working in different disciplines view it from different perspectives

The Expert answers:

Economist will view it as a long term goal that we should deal with once we fix financial industry, home markets, and general economic growth.

Sociologist will view it as yet another fad

Ecologists do view it as a religion.

Lizzie asks…

How are the renewable/non renewable resources connected with sustainable development?

I kind of know the meaning of sustainable development, in which society is trying to enhance technologies ec.. to make the world better, also thinking about future generations. Then i also know what are the renewable and non renewable resources, but i have a test coming up on sustaianabel development, and have a problem how to connect/mention the resources when talking abt sdevelopment. thanks alot

Michael asks…

How would you expedite sustainable development?

“Given the responsibility for the development of a poor, overpopulated nation, what would you use in your long and short term plans to expedite sustainable development?”

Its a question on my geography exam and I’m not sure how to approach it. Thanks for the help.

The Expert answers:

I would use a decent law system.

Private property is essential for any country to rise above poverty.

Perhaps even land reform if the land is already controlled by a handful of elite. Of course, you raise the chance of aggrevating that handful.

I would invest my debt into infrastructure like roads, electricity, and working, clean water. In order to attract foreign investment, it’s best to have something that allows them to make their products and transport them.

A sound banking system would also be necessary.

David asks…

How could eco-tax been used to promote sustainable development in the Spanish island Majorca?

A geography question.

Question information:

TOURISTS TAXED ON SPANISH HOLIDAY ISLANDS
Tourists going to Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza will have to pay a new eco-tax of 1 euro per day to repair the damage mass tourism has caused to the environment.

I dont understand

How could the eco-tax been used to promote sustainable development in their island, because surely what ever they spend the money on, tourists could damage it some how so nothing is sustainable.

Thankyou

John asks…

What does the word ‘barriers’ mean in relation to sustainable development?

I have to write an essay (it’s quite complicated to explain), which I’ve already made notes about. Yet, to my stupidity, I forgot to note down what my teacher said when mentioning ‘barriers’ in terms of sustainable development. Can anyone give me a clear insight into what this could mean?

Thank you 🙂

The Expert answers:

I imagine she was referring to any barriers (obstacles) to sustainable development. Reasons why such development might not be possible, or might have some kind of detrimental knock on effect on the environment or community.

What is a good eco-friendly wet shave alternative to the Bic disposable razors?

They are really handy, but I know they are really environmentally unfriendly, they do blunt after about four or so shaves too, I just need something that’s easy to use, not too expensive, that will last longer and is ecofriendly.

Thanks.

Any razor that uses disposable cartridges. You could use a straight razor, but the learning curve is steep, and the skill level is high.

Lizzie asks…

What is a waterproof, eco-friendly alternative to vinyl labeling for products like perfume and body wash?

My sister is starting a small business of ecofriendly, vegan beauty products and we’ve run into a hurdle. We need to figure out a waterproof alternative to vinyl labeling for the bottles. We were thinking of attaching the product information on post-consumer cardstock, but then we run into the problem of the products having no label if the consumer takes the card off.

Any suggestions?

The Expert answers:

Very thin cloth ( like flour sacking ) with a water proof glue. The cloth can be printed with indelible ink ahead of time before gluing. The glue could be one of those watered based glues that becomes water proof after it dries.
What about using a rubber stamp with permanent ink, right on the bottles?

Carol asks…

What methods are used in designing an eco friendly house?

I am doing a design project that requires to be an eco friendly home, i know what eco friendly means, and what it is, just not familiar with what and how to design an eco friendly house.

The Expert answers:

I do this for a job, and here’s the methodology.

First take into account the site. Every site is different, even if they’re the same size and next to each other. Every site will have it’s own strengths and weaknesses based on solar access, wind availability and prevailing direction, soil type, size and shape, views, transport access, surrounding structures and trees, etc.

Then design the home around those strengths and weaknesses. Just as each site is different so will each house. That design is also influenced by passive solar heating and passive airflow cooling principles.

That’s the main core of designing an eco friendly house, and so far there’s NO extra cost over a regular house. If you get these first two steps right, the rest is relatively easy.

Next decide what to build the house out of, and what to use as far as appliances, renewable energy, etc. The budget comes into play here, because the best materials and fittings usually are more expensive. But having said that any extra money spent now will pay for itself many times over during the lifespan of the house. So it’s worth doing as much as you can possibly afford.

Also take into account toxicities of materials. An Eco house should also be a healthy house, and many materials commonly used in building contain cancerigenes such as formaldehyde.

Then think outdoors, and design the landscaping around the house to be as productive and complimentary as possible. One of the best ways to eat is straight from your own garden, and with food miles to be taken into account this is even more so now.

And finally, the last but certainly not least step is to inform the occupiers how to live in the house efficiently. Behaviour can make or break even any environment, and an eco friendly house is no exception.

Hope that one minute nutshell helps, and I have a link to a self-reliant house I’m currently building if you’d like more info. Feel free to take any ideas from it.

Mary asks…

How do eco-friendly products help the environment?

I’m writing a paper on how ecofriendly products such as household cleaners are beneficial for the environment, but I’m running out of good resourses, as well as good explanations to back up my thesis. Can someone help? Thank you

The Expert answers:

Reduce
The amount of energy you consume and start using renewable energy sources, such as wind power and solar power. Sign up for Green Energy with your local power provider. If they don’t have it, then tell them to get it.
Reuse
By using products made with recycled materials. Make or buy a compost bin to use your organic waste as fertilizer for your trees, shrubs, and garden.
Recycle
All materials to your best ability in your local area.
There is a green movement in the country, it could be a case of too little too late, but at the least we are moving towards a nation that has a conscious about destroying the environment. The green movement has caught on with many groups and has become fashionable in some industries. The home building or home improvement industry is no exception. Many construction companies, home improvement centers and building products advertise some level of commitment towards “green” or environmentally friendly construction. Are these companies actually fulfilling their promises? That is a discussion for another day What we want to focus on is how a wood kitchen cabinet can help you become environmentally friendly. Everyone should want to reduce their “carbon footprint”. This carbon footprint is roughly defined as the amount of CO2 that you, as a living person, put into the environment each day. It can be everyday activities like driving a car, running an air conditioner, or building a house. Almost everything you do has a connection to the environment, be it direct or incidental. Taking products and using them is basically us being consumers and from this consumption we are taking from nature. This then creates pressure on the environment. So again, if I am building a house or renovating my kitchen, how do wood kitchen cabinets help lower my carbon footprint? The first thing is to define a “wood kitchen cabinet”. Unless you’re living in the nineteenth century, you’re probably not going to see a solid wood cabinet. It is not economical and it just does not make sense in the building industry.

What you are getting in wood kitchen cabinets is one of two things. Solid wood faced cabinets with paneled wood sides (these are the good cabinets) or the lesser quality cabinet that is a wood front and a particle board side (places like Home Depot and Lowe’s sell these inferior cabinets). Now that you have a definition of what really is a wood kitchen cabinet, you can then ask where I find these solid wood cabinets with paneled sides. The very best, easiest, and least expensive method to buying these cabinets is actually online. Yes, the internet cabinet websites easily beat any retail prices. (Mostly because of less over head). Finally, how am I saving the environment, if I am buying wood kitchen cabinets? The trick to saving money and the environment is the RTA kitchen cabinet. It is not a brand name, but rather a style of cabinet. RTA stands for “ready to assemble”. These cabinets are about thirty to forty percent less than an assembled cabinet and they are actually helping to cut down carbon emissions and save lumber. These all wood RTA kitchen cabinets use the entire tree, thus cutting waste. Furthermore, these cabinets save space on shipping. They are unassembled so they take up to fifty percent less space. This “space savings” contributes to less shipping; this produces less carbon dioxide. You may say that does not seem like much, but when you add up the number of shipments, this becomes a huge amount of carbon dioxide that is kept out of the atmosphere. So in the end, every little bit helps. Yes buying wood kitchen cabinets, especially RTA kitchen cabinets will help the environment. Now all we have to do is get everyone to do their own small part.

James asks…

Is the current prevalent market economy and resulting consumerism in the west really sustainable development?

If the consumerism of the west would be equally present in the rest of the world, then additional five earth-like planets would be necessary to have enough resources to uphold this ideal. Is this kind of market economy really sustainable development? Wouldn’t a tighter plan economy and increasingly socialist policies, be needed to combat this and create sustainable development?

The Expert answers:

On the one hand, your criticism is correct: the current economic model is simply not sustainable.

On the other hand, it is always much easier to criticize than to offer a reasonable alternative. What in the history of mankind leads you to believe that planned economies and socialist policies are in any way more effective over the long term? Russia’s command economy failed:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_economy
and China gave up and initiated all sorts of free-market reforms once Mao died:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_reform_in_the_People’s_Republic_of_China

This isn’t to say that governments will not try planning. They already plan various parts of the economy in every country:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_economy
and will be happy for an excuse to take more control, but there is no reason to believe they are going to be effective in any way:

1. Even the planning by non-command economies – such as Japan and South Korea – has not been seen as a great success.
http://www.econlib.org/library/Enc/Japan.html

2. Governments are always close to the rich. Have you any reason to believe that will change? If so, have you any reason to believe they will work for the country as a whole?

In the U.S. The Republicans are closer to the rich than the Democrats, and the results show in the economic figures:

Daniel asks…

What do you understand by the term sustainable development and why?

Sustainable development have been defined so many times by different NGOs and of course the UN in such long worthy sentences and often it is very difficult for many people to grasp and understand and implement. How do we define the term in a much more user friendly way so that we could educate others to follow and understand it in an easier format with graphical diagrams where possible?

The Expert answers:

It actually does work within the concept of PHI, the golden mean, also known as the divine balance. We must be stewards of our resources, and enhance that which advances the entirety of the society, and reject that which is deleterious to the society as a whole.

Sandra asks…

What is sustainable development and explain the three main pillars?

Sustainable development and the three main pillars explained with latest concrete examples

The Expert answers:

The three pillars or systems key to sustainable development are economic, social and environmental systems. It is said that satisfying any one of these three sustainability systems without also satisfying the others is deemed insufficient.

Chris asks…

what is the relationship between sustainable development and environmental awareness?

I’m not quite sure what is meant by sustainable development, or how I could link it with the other one.
I need it for a short speech I’ll be doing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance 🙂

The Expert answers:

Sustainable development is the building of a community in a way that is environmentally friendly and uses renewable resources. Things to look for in sustainable development are:
-transportation: walking/biking/public transportation efficient
-energy: renewable energy source located close by
-city government: new bylaws encourage citizens to build individual homes in an environmentally friendly way

environmental awarness is needed for sustainability, but is more about individuals making green choices in their every day lives.

Helen asks…

What should I include in my project about SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?

so far i’ve got an introduction explaining what sustainable development is and i’ve got a page about how our agriculture is different today. i’m starting my bit about personal transport.

what else should i put?

this is about environmental sustainable development, for my science biology project. has to be 5 pages.

The Expert answers:

Include how our natural resources are being exploited. You can say about Groundwater resources… Or Crude Oil.

That could also help.

You could also talk about pollution and the methods to control it.

You could also include topics like Wildlife, Soil, Oceans, Freshwater, etc

Betty asks…

Why are ECO friendly products so pricey?

Especially when the goverment wants to encourage less polution, most products are not struggling family friendly.

The Expert answers:

They’re actually fair-priced. We’ve just gotten so used to inferior, mass-produced products that sacrifice quality for price that it seems like they’re expensive. The returns you get from using healthier products will outweigh the cost. If you use less and be careful about waste then you won’t be spending anymore money than you do now.

Daniel asks…

How important is Eco-Friendly Products for your company?

Preserving our environment requires making new consumer choices about everything. Shopping green online rather than burning gas to drive from store to store is most efficient and economical way not only to save time and money but also the planet. How do you participate in saving the environment?

The Expert answers:

There is no sure fire way to “save” the environment. It doesn’t matter how eco friendly a company says their products are, they are going to lie to you just so they can make a profit through any means neccessary- i know i would if i owned one…..just being honest.

Susan asks…

Why are some people more attracted to eco-friendly products over others?

Is it by the way they look?
By the price?
Why do some people go for them and others don’t? what do you think are the main reasons?

The Expert answers:

Some people really do care about the environment and are trying to save it. Others just don’t care if it causes problems, they figure they are only going to live once and don’t care about the younger generations coming up.

Lisa asks…

How will the world benefit from my buying eco-friendly products?

Does it truly make a difference? Someone help me understand the “Green movement”

The Expert answers:

Yes! And remember than if everyone took small steps it would add up to a big difference! You don’t have to be a tree huggin’ hippie to make a difference. Simple steps like reusable bags, walking when you can and some friendlier cleaners are things that will make all the difference. And lets face it, doing these things won’t hurt at all in the long run, even if they don’t end up helping as much as we would like.

Are climate change scientists altering weather / sea level data to advance a political agenda?

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/06/17/research-center-under-fire-for-adjusted-sea-level-data/

The University of Colorado’s Sea Level Research Group decided in May to add 0.3 millimeters — or about the thickness of a fingernail — every year to its actual measurements of sea levels, sparking criticism from experts who called it an attempt to exaggerate the effects of global warming.

“Gatekeepers of our sea level data are manufacturing a fictitious sea level rise that is not occurring,” said James M. Taylor, a lawyer who focuses on environmental issues for the Heartland Institute.

Steve Nerem, the director of the widely relied-upon research center, told FoxNews.com that his group added the 0.3 millimeters per year to the actual sea level measurements because land masses, still rebounding from the ice age, are rising and increasing the amount of water that oceans can hold.

“We have to account for the fact that the ocean basins are actually getting slightly bigger… water volume is expanding,” he said, a phenomenon they call glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA).

Taylor calls it tomfoolery.

“There really is no reason to do this other than to advance a political agenda,” he said.

Climate scientist John Christy, a professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, said that the amount of water in the ocean and sea level were two different things.

“To me… sea level rise is what’s measured against the actual coast,” he told FoxNews.com. “That’s what tells us the impact of rising oceans.”

Taylor agreed.

Yea yea. Fox News. Get over it. Answer the question based on the article and not the source.

The Expert answers:

Naaaahhhh….they wouldn’t do that. Oh wait! They already HAVE altered data. But they don’t have a political agenda; only Republicans do.

Steven asks…

Do you know that CAG slammed the National Biodiversity Authority for allowing questionable patents?

CAG’s findings on biodiversity conservation, in particular, will fill environmentalists with dismay. It turns out that a lax NBA allowed commercial enterprises to exploit biological resources with very little monitoring…

Environmental groups tracking NBA have been warning that the authority’s processes are far from transparent, and have raised disquieting questions on the access being provided to companies to exploit India’s biological resources without due process.

A report titled ‘6 Years of the Biological Diversity Act in India’, prepared by Kanchi Kohli and Mashqura Fareedi from Kalpavriksh environmental group and Shalini Bhutani of the international non-profit GRAIN and released in early 2009, had pointed out serious flaws with NBA’s style of functioning..

First the NBA, had refused them access to documents on its proceedings. It was only after Kohli filed a Right to Information application in 2007 that the researchers were able to get some data. Then filed a complaint with the Central Information Commission which ordered NBA to provide the required documents.

The CAG report is equally perceptive and highlights concerns on the loss of biodiversity to foreign commercial enterprises. It notes that the Biodiversity Act (2002) empowers NBA to oppose the grant of IPR in any country outside India on biological resources obtained from here or on knowledge associated with such resources. Although NBA had appointed a legal consultant in November 2005 it “did not take effective action to contest questionable IPRs”.

Tailpiece: Just recently, Gautam relinquished charge of NBA and took over as chairperson of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority!

Now do you find any difference from the greedy politicos and the learned scientists in quest of knowledge and power?

The Expert answers:

I read RS Narayanan’s article in Dinamani on this subject yesterday and he had lambasted the science community in his characteristic way! I was thinking of googling for more info and your link was useful, thanks.

National Poet Subramanya Bharathi sang ”if the learned person cheats, he would be lost in infamous fall” (crude translation of his poetic Tamil), but the people in Education, Research (science community), Judiciary or Religious groups are not the least free from irresponsibility, greed and dishonesty! ON that score it would be too unjust to lambast whole community of Educationists, Social activists, scientists, jurists etc as rascals – at least that is what learned critics like RSN do!

I have had the good fortune to meet many dedicated scientists, lawyers and Activists in my long public life and I always have held high esteem for their professions! But yes, the grave lapses of Biodiversity Dept costing not just the valuable native herbs to exotic commercial interests, but depriving the rights of tribes and farmers (under IPR) for their contribution to find their uses long before and preservation of the stock for the community – deserve the strongest condemnations!

The CAG could not fix the value of the precious materials already left our shores and the state of their uses – perhaps flourishing under illegal patents in other countries! That lists of valuable / disappearing herbs and farmer / tribal communities that are eligible for the share of sale proceeds etc have not been prepared even after lapse of so many years, is really shocking.

That the Chief of NBA who indulged in hasty approval for sale of number of herbs without any effort to get the share of IPR holders (whose lists also he had not cared to collect) etc, had conveniently left the Biodiversity Authority and got posted to another Authority (for welfare of Farmers!) shows the corrupt political background under which the like of him thrive!

People have been diverted by mega political scandals like the Spectrum and Adarsh in the news that this huge critical – and recurring – loss and irregularity of an elite society of Scientists has been completely side lined by media!!

You asked about the ‘difference’ between the political greed and the scientists’ greed! Well, it is like this, to me! We know the snake poison is deadly like the political corruption, which we expect and try to be wary of. But the scientist’s greed and corruption are like poisons in food items, like the Aflatoxin, etc which people unknowingly gulp and get affected. We take scientists as honest and toiling elites and prone to overlook the bugs among them!

There should be public pressure to save the biological wealth of the nation and earn the Intellectural Property Rights of the farmers who had supplied the stock for sale out of India, in accordance with the NBA approvals. The lists of the endangered and precious bio stock have to be prepared urgently along with the list of sources eligible for IPR shares! The legal wing of the Authority should monitor the use of the stock already exported and the way they are used (for breach of any patent rights of our nation)!

Edit: An independent Enquiry by team of scientists and Activists should assess the losses and punish the guilty elites. The approvals already given have to be reviewed urgently!

I’m not sure what else to add except that I expect to have pretty good recommendations (1 extra from my teacher at Duke) and that I’m adding a book review as a writing sample.

I’m also graduating a year early (hence the strange transcripts) and I started taking my classes online after 9th grade (I don’t know if this hurts or not?)

Anyway, please let me know if you think these schools are like WAY out of my reach or if I need some more mid-range schools (I’m open to suggestions) or anything else you can think of. I’m taking the SAT in May, so I don’t know if my score for that will be better or not (hoping for around a 2100 but who knows) I’m also taking the US History, Math 1b, and English Literature subject tests in June and of course the AP exams in May but I have no idea what my score will be like.

Thanks for the help! Sorry if this kind of rambling/messy. I’d also love it if you could suggest some schools for me to look at.
To the person who told me I should take with my counselor, I have. However, she mainly quotes me stats from the Princeton Review which is helpful but I’d really like personal opinions from people who went some of these schools or know someone who did, ect.

The Expert answers:

Go to your counselor . Present to him or her or whoever this list.

THIS IS THEIR JOB. If your responsible you should be doing this already NOT asking here. :/

Your Questions About Green Living

John asks…

Should the governments of the world be investing in renewable energy instead of reducing CO2?

What kind of feed back on Bjorn Lomborg”s documentary (based on his book)”” Cool It”

The Expert answers:

Governments of the world should do both. You first need a revenue stream to invest in renewable energy. A great way to create that revenue stream is through a price on carbon emissions. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative states in the northeastern US invested 11% of the revenue stream from their carbon cap and trade system in renewable energy, for example (and 52% in energy efficiency to decrease energy demand to begin with).

As for a free market, I agree. We should stop subsidizing fossil fuels. Coal is immensely subsidized, both directly and indirectly. When you take the full life cycle costs of coal into account, including damage to environmental and public health, and contribution to climate change, it becomes more expensive than virtually every source of renewable energy. The link below probably isn’t working yet, but it will work tonight once I publish this article on Skeptical Science about the full cost of coal.

Bottom line is that it’s not an either-or scenario. We need to do both, and in fact doing one (reducing CO2) helps with the other (investing in renewable energy).

Helen asks…

Will America lead the world in renewable energy, or simply rely on tax cuts for the rich to lead the way?

The Expert answers:

F*CK the rich…they already have the technology that they are sitting on doing nothing with.

Depend on yourselves if you want something done.

Nancy asks…

which country follows the best practices in the use of renewable energy resources in the world?

The Expert answers:

Spain has really been pushing solar energy with huge incentives.

Joseph asks…

Why are governments around the world so reluctant to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources?

State The Following:
1: Answer
2: Reason (if applicable)
3: Any Other relevant Information

The Expert answers:

Because their respective economies would completely tank without fossil fuels! We absolutely need them to function.

Renewable energy is nothing but a warm and fuzzy fantasy as of now. They are all inefficient sources of energy, with the exception of the highly controversial nuclear energy, a completely clean source, but with baggage (i.e. Nuclear waste and the fear of a meltdown).

If they were viable solutions, we’d be using them right now. Don’t believe the garbage that the oil companies have politicians in the bag. If there were alternatives that were better, they would compete on the open market and beat out fossil fuels. Oil companies would have to buy off EVERYONE that invested in, produced, consumed, and advocated for clean renewable sources. Not even realistic.

Besides, the government is heavily subsidizing renewable energy already. So much for the oil companies buying off the politicians to subdue green energy. And there are dozens of huge corporations that are receiving government subsidies (e.g. GE) for and are promoting renewables.

The short answer is that fossil fuels are much more efficient and can deliver more energy than what renewables can (barring nuclear). Green energy sources are impractical and inefficient.

To get a meager amount of our energy needs from wind energy, we’d need wind farms with a landmass the size of MN and TX combined, all for a small percentage of our needs. Plus they can only operate in ideal conditions, 15-45 mph winds. Anything below 15 and they don’t spin, anything over 45 and they will break. And if the wind doesn’t blow, they are either idle or have a gas powered turbine that spins them.

Ethanol is another wasteful product. Ethanol deprives us of a food source, since farmers dedicate more of their crops for ethanol or only grow ethanol type crops (usually corn), which in turn leads to starvation in other poorer countries due to less supply, but it also drives up the cost of what is on the market. On top of that, more land is converted to cropland, which leads to deforestation and loss of habitat, erodes the topsoil and leeches nutrients, and lowers the water table, due to the high requirement for water during the ethanol processing. Beside all that, ethanol releases about as much energy as it takes to produce it, thus it is almost a zero sum gain.

The rest are even more inefficient than the two above (i.e. Solar and geo-thermal). And as for hydro, we don’t have enough river currents or dams to produce even close to what our energy requirements are.

All in all, renewable are nice in theory and for environmentalism, but in the real world they are impractical and inefficient. Unless we are talking nuclear energy, the most clean and renewable source there is. Problem is the stigma attached to it because of 2 meltdowns, and the problem of what to do with the waste.

Carol asks…

How long will the world be around if we use non-renewable energy?

The Expert answers:

We’re not all gonna die or anything like that.

But if we don’t plan a transition away from fossil fuels, life will be very unpleasant.

Mostly we’ll be poor, paying a whole lot for energy, dealing with flooded coastal areas, and trying desperately to feed ourselves as agriculture gets blasted by global warming.

Life will go on, but it will be very hard. We can do a whole lot better if we’re smart.

what political/environmental, ethical issues are going on in the UK?

i know about the ozone layer and green house gasses issue (global warming) and about excess packaging that is used in products and therefore creates too much waste and people not recycling enough and about drugs and gang culture but is that alot of a problem in America more than the UK? what other issues are going on in todays society?
teens mugging old people specially in winter and rape and abuse. any others? what do you think? any comments welcome 🙂

The Expert answers:

Ethical?
They are bushed out!

Joseph asks…

Is ignorance our greatest enemy in America?

I think the greatest threat to America has not changed since 1776: ignorance on the part of the general population. When people are not well educated, they’re easy to manipulate — that’s what gives corrupt politicians the leverage they need to control people. When people are not well educated, they support aggressive behavior overseas which deepens the cultural differences that drive terrorism. When people are not well educated, they don’t understand what’s happening with the economy, which makes them sitting ducks for greedy financial institutions. When people are not well educated, they fail to understand environmental issues and become ripe for picking by those who have hidden agendas regarding the environment.

Finally, when people are not well educated, they see poor, uneducated illegal immigrants as potential competitors for their jobs, which increases their fear, hatred, bigotry, and unreasonable attitudes about immigration reform.

So I generalize: our biggest enemy remains, and has always been, ignorance.

The Expert answers:

Education is essential if people are to participate in modern complex democracies, like our own. It doesn’t mean everyone needs a college degree. Libraries are great places to educate yourself… And free!

The reason ignorance is such a poison pill to our republic is when the masses vote without intense study of the issues, without a political philosophy of their own, without the understanding of how the government itself works, they often do more harm than good.

Daniel asks…

Old John Ritter movie that featured an eco-future America riding around on bikes?

John Ritter made this comedy movie (maybe in the early 80s?) about a post-energy crisis America riding around on bicycles, and I think in the opening scene, you see a Volkswagen Beetle car half-buried in the ground and made into a small ‘mobile home’ type of thing…it was a parody on how America would look if they took environmental issues to heart…can anyone remember the name of the movie??? thanks…

The Expert answers:

This is the 1979 movie “Americathon”. I enjoyed this movie and still have it in my collection.

Linda asks…

How has America’s economic prosperity affected consumer waste and pollution?

No one had to tell our grandmothers to “reduce, reuse, and recycle” during the depression, as they did so out of necessity. After the economic boom following WWII the virtue of thrift was lost in an influx of cheap massed produced goods. It seems that during our current recession that people are rethinking their purchases out of either concern for the environment or reduced amount of disposable income. Do you think that environmental issues could be greatly reduced if people changed their spending ?

The Expert answers:

Absolutely yes. Prosperous countries became SIZE QUEENS and KINGS for too many years, by wiping the shelves of alluring stores filled with unnecessary products they can do without. They were cheap w/o thinking if surplus items were necessary and why not charge everything on their credit cards. If they had to pay cash for every item they buy, they wouldn’t pick even 1/3 of merchandise in their cart. So it’s all domino effects, Credit card companies, banking, manufacturers, middleman…All of them fed to one another along with mindless consumers created monstrosity waste byproduct pollution.

Yes, we have been digging our premature graves, these economic downturn had to happen to balance out the Law of Nature.
Now, consumers have spent out, no more borrowed money in advance, and they lost homes, moved in with their parents or apt where they have very little space to place unnecessary goods. Amen.

Our air will be cleaner soon, hopefully :):}

Mandy asks…

Is this the most ingenious alternative energy source yet discovered?

Its poop! How amazing that this could be the wave of the future. A totally renewable energy source!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/oukoe_uk_usa_energy_excrement_odd

The Expert answers:

The total amount of available feces could provide about 10% of current fossil fuel usage. But we would have to devise ways to get plant nutrients out of the feces and back to the fields that grow the food that made those feces. The soil would quickly die and with it our ability to produce the food without this return to the land.

We can get most of the plant nutrients out by just washing the feces, and returning the water back to the soil. This is already done. So the next step is taking the solid residue for energy production.

This still leaves us a need to produce the other 90% of our energy usage., but 10% is better than nothing, as long as we preserve our ability to grow crops to feed ourselves.

Paul asks…

How do the democrats and the repbulicans differ about solar power and other alternative energy?

I’d like a source like a .org, CNN, reliable news source, ect. please!

The Expert answers:

I disagree with Bonzi to say the least. Sen Obama’s plan to tax oil companies will only increase our dependence of imported oil. This action will i no way benefit the consumer. Just the government, the suppliers will simply raise prices to cover the difference so there will be no “upside” to the end users. By increasing internal production we will influence the markets and prices will decrease as a result of a greater supply. Simple economics really. The US should invest in an upgraded power distribution network(the grid) and also in just about any domestic fuels. Nuclear, wind, solar, coal and oil. Nuclear in my opinion is the short term answer as is the plan put forth by T B Pickens. Nothing should be overlooked as a path to the future. As to the difference between D’s and R’s I see none really. Each party is owned by one “special interest” or another. Letting oil companies drill without oversight is not the answer but then again not allowing drilling and being held hostage by extreme environmentalists is not acceptable either.

William asks…

Is alternative energy really the way forward or would it be better to build more nuclear plants like France?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-west-wales-14847610

q 11/49

The Expert answers:

I firmly believe the best way for us in the UK is to have our Government build, secure, own and run any/all Nuclear plants.

A highly paid staff of scientific experts could work in the publicly owned plants and implement the strictest of guidelines to ensure that all plants were safe and well run; that is in my opinion all that would be necessary for the UK to be fully independent of outside pressure for energy.

This method would be our only safe way to operate because all private firms would inevitably be forever pushing the safety boundaries to gain extra profits… It is their way unfortunately, profit has to rise year on year or the investors withdraw and leave the plant bereft of safety and funding, making yet another mess for the public to fix when in fact the public purse could have invested in the very beginning and all could be well safe.
Well designed modern nuclear is safe in the hands of experts firewalled from political dogma and government alone.

Mark asks…

How can the use of alternative sources of energy be encouraged?

“US President Barack Obama said on Saturday that his administration will hand out nearly $2 billion (£1.3bn) for new solar plants that will create thousands of jobs and increase the use of renewable energy sources.”
http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/index.php/news/content/view/full/92353

The Expert answers:

Yes anything that reduces western democracys dependency on oil should be encouraged

Donald asks…

Have you heard about Moore’s Law in relation to alternative energy products?

Moore’s Law is the law which states that the number of transistors which can fit on a microchip doubles about every six months. This is why computers have improved so dramatically in the last twenty years. German technology company Siemens stated in a recent press release that Moore’s Law seems to apply to Solar Technologies as well, and that modern day solar panels are at a comparative stage of development to an old fashioned Apple IIe that many Gen-X-ers learned to type on in elementary school.

If this statement proves to be true, and if solar technology does make such tremendous advances, what kinds of laws will have to be put into place to prevent Conservative vandals from destroying solar installations just because they’ve been trained by FOX News propaganda to hate alternative energy? Do you believe existing laws against vandalism will suffice or do you believe the interstate commerce statutes that apply to power lines should also apply to solar installations owned by individual homeowners?
@ John D – if those homeowners are living off the grid there would be no way to apply those laws but if the homeowners are connected to the electrical grid in an area where net-metering is permitted then that grid connection would make those laws applicable.

The Expert answers:

Keep drearming

even if the Earth lasts another 6000 years there will never be a replacement for good old oil and coal
