Your Questions About Green Living

Charles asks…

What are five names of some “Alternative Energy” companies?

Things like solar panels, wind mills, electric powered cars, etc. Please include 2 solar panel company’s, thanks.
example of a company: Target

The Expert answers:

Not sure what your asking…Solar panel installation companies? If so, than I’d say Arosa Energy- just used them. Very good service and neat job.

Ken asks…

Were the high gas prices the reason that major oil companies now invest money into alternative energy options?

The Expert answers:

Major oil companies are not investing money into alternative energy, at least not as much as they pretend to. They certainly pretend to, putting ads out there like they care, don’t they? If you look at their financial reports, their investment in energy is miniscule. But they like to keep good public relations, which is why they have so many commercials.

In reality, the oil companies are not the major investors in alternative energy. It’s the utilities that are investing in alternatives like wind. Much of the rationale is driven by fear of the high gas prices in the future; but most of it is driven by consumer demand for clean energy, state demand for clean energy and tax subsidies that make alternative energy feasible economically.

Mandy asks…

what percentage of profits do oil companies invest into alternative energy sources?or are they to short sited

The Expert answers:

No, they are smart. Although yes, they may be long sighted by investing heavily into alternative energy sources now, it would be no good until the world virtually switched to alternative energy. Microsoft, a computer systems company, done terrible until they could get people to ‘demand’ for Operating systems which was depicted during 1995 – 2000. Not only that, but the stock quotes show this, with the NASDAQ booming exponentially during the dotcom boom: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Nasdaq_historical_graph.svg
Oil companies are not looking for what is helping the environment. They are looking for the quick buck. Furthermore, the amount of oil used everyday is another reason why oil is so dominant today. America’s military and technological success came out due to the surge in oil. Plastics are made out of oil. The very computer your using has had oil used in the production process. In the film Oil Crash: A Crude Awakening, one man stated: “I don’t care if you worship Buddah or Allah or Jesus. In reality you worship oil”. That quote just goes to show how oil revolves around the everyday life of Man. And until 100+ million gas guzzlers stop being produced every day, I’m afraid to say that they will only keep investing in oil.
We also have the fear that ‘global warming’ as such may not even be happening. There have been recent studies which have shown that the Earth could just be going through it’s natural cycle. Yes, 98% scientists support the global warming is influenced by Humans hypothesis but that is BS. 99% of programmers during 1999 thought computer systems would go haywire due to the “Millennium bug” which didn’t even happen.

I could go on forever. Until demand has been caught for alternative energy, oil companies will place most of their resources and capital on oil and it’s complementary goods.

James asks…

john mccains energy plan not to provide incentives to alternative energy allows oil companies to maintain cont?

i need a good rebutal to this proposition someone please help me.!

the last word is control

The Expert answers:

Ok Hes stating we need both,Oil,and new alternative energy.
Here’s something to think about,
How long have we had Solar cells,batteries,wind turbines,and ethanol?
(answer..over 20 years or more)
Why do they all have to be subsidized by Government?
(answer,because they aren’t profitable to make it on a free market alone)
Since these alternative energies have been around for some time and haven’t produced anything that we can call reliable,we need to keep oil on the mainstream.The only Viable sources of energy are Oil,Nuclear,Coal and maybe the Hydrogen cell,but even they state that it wont be a practicable item for anything for at least 10 more years.

Thomas asks…

What problems are utility companies having to face today in providing energy for more people?

What problems are utility companies having to face today in providing energy for more people?

It could be any kind of problems.

And are there alternative energy sources that companies can use?

The Expert answers:

The first and foremost problem is the red tape put in place to making it near impossible to get any thing done. Then when you get the paper work out of the way, then all the well meaning greenies protest it and halt any progress. Then when some hot shot gets out there and say this is the way to go, people jump on the band wagon with out the slightest knowledge if this source of energy is even plausible or cost effective.
To answer your last question there are good alt. Sources but they will not be used due to trumped-up environmental regulations.

Donald asks…

Power, by Cow?

Dean Foods is exploring ways to turn animal waste from its thousands of cows into renewable energy for the local power grid. The use of an anaerobic digester is also known unofficially as a poop-to-power energy system.

The effort may reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate carbon and renewable energy credits.

http://climatebiz.com/node/24666

The Expert answers:

Yeah there’s several methods of making use of methane, which is great because not only is it making energy out of waste, but it’s also preventing the methane from increasing the greenhouse effect.

One example I like is Waste Management collecting methane from landfills to power their collection trucks.

Linda asks…

Are the Inaugural carbon footprint offsets enough to impress?

There are many inaugural events unfolding. Two are Green. The first of these was open to the public; tickets for the black-tie gala were $500 apiece, and five percent of ticket prices will go to nonprofit groups that have partnered with event planner Event Emissary. The company is Washington, DC’s first green event planning company. The Green Ball’s power consumption will be minimal and the electricity used to produce the event will be offset by the purchase of renewable energy credits.

http://www.eventemissary.com/

The 2nd green ball is sponsored by Al Gore: The invitation-only affair at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery is called “The Green Ball: Inauguration of a New Green Economy.” Ticket prices to the sold-out event were not made public.

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-obama-green11-2009jan11,0,7797733.story

http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/jan2009/2009-01-13-01.asp

Are the efforts to keep it green sufficient? If not, will the footprint be offset by improved programs and education within the first 100 days of the Adminstration?

The Expert answers:

Well the way I see it is that you’re not going to have an inaugural event without a pretty large carbon footprint. That’s just the reality of the situation. But the important thing about the green balls is that they’re symbolic. They show that the Obama Administration is going to have a serious commitment to the environment, which is more than we’ve been able to say about the American government for a long time.

You can criticize them all they want, but at least they’re making an effort to be green.

Mark asks…

Was Gore’s speech for clean energy in 10 years planned? Is he trying to beat T. Boone Pickens’ plan?

Where did this come from? He recently spent $30 million on advertising and not on building or researching renewable energy sources. What’s his deal? Is Gore just trying to come in and take credit? Did the advertising for T. Boone Pickens’ plan come as a threat to Gore?

The Expert answers:

I’d suggest you stop looking for ways to find fault, start using the leverage provided by both these men and do your part to help our planet. Whether you like either of these men, they are trying to help and they have the kind of clout that most people could only dream about. They are taking a lot of flack that each of us should be sharing. What are you doing to help? What can I do to help? Our way of life is in serious jeopardy and we’d better get started changing it now. And what would you do with 30 million dollars? Would you give it to the poor or build a huge solar power plant or would you get a full body tatoo, get drunk and buy a boat?

Betty asks…

Will Russia’s decision to cut off gas to European countries encourage the EU to do more about renewable energy?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090106/ts_nm/us_russia_ukraine_gas

It now looks like its not just the Ukraine that is being hit, as Russia has decided to halt all gas supplies via Ukraine to Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Macedonia. Something it said it wouldn’t be doing over the weekend.

Holding whole countries to ransom over the winter months when gas is most in demand, must surely make the EU think again about reducing its reliance on Russia and making there own alternative forms of power. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say. If we won’t put the money into research and infrastructure because of the credit crunch, maybe we will because of political necessity?

The Expert answers:

You would hope so wouldn’t you.
I find it unbelievable that Europe has not got together, as a whole, to explore and develop new energy ideas. Between us we’ve got the brains, the technology, the manufacturing bases and the money, but instead all we seem good at is law making.

So I’d like to think so but think it’s unlikley in the near future.
Shame really, I’d love to see those countries, those that hold others to ransom, sitting on barrels of the stuff that they can’t give away.

Jenny asks…

Why are the house republicans so furious. Democrats took away tax credits from their masters.?

The House of representatives shifted $16 Billion In Tax Breaks From Big Oil To Renewable energy proyects. Like wind and solar power proyects.
That is right, when they were in power, the republicans had given big oil billions in tax credits. That was at the time when the big oil companies were making record profits.
Well today, the representatives of the people took those gifts away and put the money to work for all of us.

The Expert answers:

It’s about time. I’ve had enough of corporate freedoms and advantages. It’s time we put those credits to good use.

Plus, this goes to show that the Democrats are doing what they promised. They promised change, and that’s what they’re doing; changing things.

Lizzie asks…

Why is there still no response from the UN to the open letter from 141 leading scientists?

Specifically, challanging supporters of the hypothesis of dangerous human-caused climate change to demonstrate that:

1. Variations in global climate in the last hundred years are significantly outside the natural range experienced in previous centuries;
2. Humanity’s emissions of carbon dioxide and other ‘greenhouse gases’ (GHG) are having a dangerous impact on global climate;
3. Computer-based models can meaningfully replicate the impact of all of the natural factors that may significantly influence climate;
4. Sea levels are rising dangerously at a rate that has accelerated with increasing human GHG emissions, thereby threatening small islands and coastal communities;
5. The incidence of malaria is increasing due to recent climate changes;
6. Human society and natural ecosystems cannot adapt to foreseeable climate change as they have done in the past;
7. Worldwide glacier retreat, and sea ice melting in Polar Regions , is unusual and related to increases in human GHG emissions;
8. Polar bears and other Arctic and Antarctic wildlife are unable to adapt to anticipated local climate change effects, independent of the causes of those changes;
9. Hurricanes, other tropical cyclones and associated extreme weather events are increasing in severity and frequency;
10. Data recorded by ground-based stations are a reliable indicator of surface temperature trends.

Confirmation name help (Catholic)?

Ok,
So first of all please save all “Catholics are going to hell or why do you worship saints etc etc etc etc” I respect all denomination of Christianity so please respect mine.

Ok so I am looking for a Confirmation name, i under stand you can have two but one is the recommended to help basis your life around, and help you become closer to the big man.

ANYWAY

So here is my problem, I have found there is over 10,000 Saints and I am having real problems find the right one. Also if you are allowed the names of Angels i will accept those as well, if you could help that would be great.

So here is a little about me. I am aiming to become a politician, as politics is something i have always had a lot of interest and passion for. I also am and always have been an animal activist and environmental activist. I have been activly involved in Green-peace, OceanDefenders and many more. my main goal in this is to help the ban the commercial Whale hunt. BUT my work on animal welfare and environmental issues is aimed at all aspects.

When it comes to politics I bring my views and opinions of my animal and environmental work to the table, I also am pursuing policies in which to help the people of Africa and the people of Zimbabwe – I am also very passionate about this.

My relationship with my faith has been very very rocky, almost to the point of self destruction.

If anyone has any idea of saints/angel even the slightest idea, i would appreciate it. Causei have gone thru about 100 now, with no luck.

Thanks!

Mik

The Expert answers:

1) You don’t have to actually ever USE your confirmation name, so it doesn’t ever have to be heard in your potential political future.

2) You don’t know for SURE your future life has anything to do with being in the public eye.

3) You might want to consider taking on the name of someone who has been influential in your life, like a brother, a priest, or friend with a saint’s name.

Helen asks…

Why is the government wasting money on these 20 programs?

http://www.lewrockwell.com/rep/government-waste.html

#1 A total of $3 million has been granted to researchers at the University of California at Irvine so that they can play video games such as World of Warcraft. The goal of this “video game research” is reportedly to study how “emerging forms of communication, including multiplayer computer games and online virtual worlds such as World of Warcraft and Second Life can help organizations collaborate and compete more effectively in the global marketplace.”

#2 The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave the University of New Hampshire $700,000 this year to study methane gas emissions from dairy cows.

#3 $615,000 was given to the University of California at Santa Cruz to digitize photos, T-shirts and concert tickets belonging to the Grateful Dead.

#4 A professor at Stanford University received $239,100 to study how Americans use the Internet to find love. So far one of the key findings of this “research” is that the Internet is a safer and more discreet way to find same-sex partners.

#5 The National Science Foundation spent $216,000 to study whether or not politicians “gain or lose support by taking ambiguous positions.”

#6 The National Institutes of Health spent approximately $442,340 to study the behavior of male prostitutes in Vietnam.

#7 Approximately $1 million of U.S. taxpayer money was used to create poetry for the Little Rock, New Orleans, Milwaukee and Chicago zoos. The goal of the “poetry” is to help raise awareness on environmental issues.

#8 The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent $175 million during 2010 to maintain hundreds of buildings that it does not even use. This includes a pink, octagonal monkey house in the city of Dayton, Ohio.

#9 $1.8 million of U.S. taxpayer dollars went for a “museum of neon signs” in Las Vegas, Nevada.

#10 $35 million was reportedly paid out by Medicare to 118 “phantom” medical clinics that never even existed. Apparently these “phantom” medical clinics were established by a network of criminal gangs as a way to defraud the U.S. government.

#11 The Conservation Commission of Monkton, Vermont got $150,000 from the federal government to construct a “critter crossing”. Thanks to U.S. government money, the lives of “thousands” of migrating salamanders are now being saved.

#12 In California, one park received $440,000 in federal funds to perform “green energy upgrades” on a building that has not been used for a decade.

#13 $440,955 was spent this past year on an office for former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert that he rarely even visits.

#14 One Tennessee library was given $5,000 in federal funds to host a series of video game parties.

#15 The U.S. Census Bureau spent $2.5 million on a television commercial during the Super Bowl that was so poorly produced that virtually nobody understood what is was trying to say.

#16 A professor at Dartmouth University received $137,530 to create a “recession-themed” video game entitled “Layoff”.

#17 The National Science Foundation gave the Minnesota Zoo over $600,000 so that they could develop an online video game called “Wolfquest”.

#18 A pizzeria in Iowa was given $60,000 to renovate the pizzeria’s facade and give it a more “inviting feel”.

#19 The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave one enterprising group of farmers $30,000 to develop a tourist-friendly database of farms that host guests for overnight “haycations”. This one sounds like something that Dwight Schrute would have dreamed up.

#20 Almost unbelievably, the National Institutes of Health was given $800,000 in “stimulus funds” to study the impact of a “genital-washing program” on men in South Africa.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to government waste. There are undoubtedly countless other wasteful government programs. These are just 20 of the most ridiculous examples of things that Congress has decided to waste tax dollars on.

The Expert answers:

Here’s my favorite similar program:

Several hundred thousand was appropriated to find out why dogs bark. Their conclusion? “Because they’re dogs”.

Maria asks…

Feeling directionless and useless?

I’ve been a volunteer since I was 14 (I’m in my mid 20s) and have always volunteered with at least one organization (ir not more) at any given time.

I’m becoming more and more active in human rights. I’m doing volunteer work with Amnesty International, Oxfam and CoDevelopment Canada. I love documentaries and my bf and I watch one a week, as well as attending any international documentary film fests. (There are 2 or 3 here a year.)

But perhaps because I’m educating myself more on AIDS, genocide, environmental issues, lack of clean water, etc, I’m feeling more useless… Like the work I’m doing isn’t doing anything at all. I really want to do something that helps someone and I don’t feel like what I’m doing is any use.

I sponsor a child in Africa and donate to other causes. I live a “green” life and buy organic, recycle, save electricity, bike, etc. What else can I do? How can I feel like I’m really making a difference? I feel directionless.

Thank you!

The Expert answers:

You ARE making a difference. I know it doesn’t feel that way, but you are. And you are an AWESOME person for doing all that you do. If everyone did as much as you do, I believe the world would be a very different and much better place. You can’t solve everything — no one can. But you are doing more than your part. Brava.

It’s hard when you see, say, Oprah Winfrey building a massive leadership academy that’s going to immediately affect the lives of hundreds of girls, to think your “little” effort is doing anything by comparison. But it’s really *not* a little effort — you probably influenced one person right now just by posting this list of all you do on Yahoo!Answers. Someone out there that you will never meet may have read this and thought, wow, I need to do more, I think I’ll go volunteer. You influence people — your friends and family — every time you talk about everything you are learning from documentaries and the material from Amnesty International, Oxfam, etc. Your efforts *do* have a ripple effect — your actions aren’t happening in a vacuum.

Two simple things you can do: Write your US Representatives and US Senators about any issue you think is important. Make sure your online social networking profiles reflect your efforts as well — linking to organizations you support, putting updates on your blog or bulletin space on such, etc.

Keep looking for more to do. By looking, you’ll find what more you can engage in. And remember that priorities change — what you feel passionate about now can change over time. Don’t feel bad about that — it’s natural.

Mary asks…

Christians what are ten things you can find with these statements?

Vilification of homosexuality, resulting in discrimination, parents disowning their children, murder, and suicide.

People and animals sacrificed as an offering to gods.

Food destroyed because it doesn’t comply with specific religious beliefs.

Women treated like second class citizens, or even slaves, based on religious teachings.

Children growing up without music.

Children growing up to hate and fear science and scientists, because science disproves their parents’ religion – leading to appalling scientific illiteracy.

Tens of thousands tortured and killed as witches (a practice which still continues today).

Millions of cats killed in the belief that witches use them as familiars, leaving rats free to spread the black death throughout Europe, killing millions of people in turn.

People bothered and sometimes woken up by door-to-door religion salespeople.

People dying because they believe their faith makes them immune to snake venom, or other lethal aspects of reality.

People dying – and letting their children die – because their religion forbids accepting medical help.

People choked, starved, poisoned, or beaten to death during exorcisms.

Female genital mutilation endorsed by religious texts.

Psychological and physiological conditions blamed on demons, preventing believers from seeking medical care.

People disowning family members for leaving their religion, in some cases symbolized by mock funerals.

Friendships and romances severed or never started over religious differences.

“Abstinence-only” sex education, resulting in five times the amount sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancies – often leading to ill-fated “emergency” marriages.

Campaigns against safe sex, with similar results – responsible for much of the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Women having septic abortions — or being forced to have unwanted children they resent — because religious organizations have gotten laws passed making abortion illegal or inaccessible.

Censorship (often destructive) of speech, art, books, music, films, poetry, songs and, if possible, thought.

The discouragement of rational, critical thought.

Believers whipping, impaling, poisoning or crucifying themselves during religious festivals as a demonstration of their faith and piety.

Children spending the period of their lives when the brain is most receptive to learning new information reading, rereading, and even memorizing religious texts.

People who believe the world is about to end neglect their education, are not financially responsible, and in extreme cases take part in mass suicides.

Environmental issues ignored because of beliefs that God will magically fix everything.

Wives told they will be tortured forever if they leave their abusive husbands.

People in times of trouble relying on advice from religious leaders without any sort of training in counseling or therapy.

Holy wars – followers of different faiths (or even the same faith) killing each other in the name of their (benevolent, loving and merciful) gods.

The destruction of great works of art considered to be pornographic/blasphemous, and the persecution of the artists.

Persecution/punishment of blasphemers (Salman Rushdie still has a death sentence on him), and blasphemy laws in general.

Slavery condoned by religious texts.

Children traumatized by vivid stories of eternal burning and torture to ensure that they’ll be too frightened to even question religion.

Terminal patients in constant agony who would end their lives if they didn’t believe it would result in eternal torture.

School boards having to spend time and money and resources on the fight to have evolution taught in the schools.

Persecution of Heretics/scientists, like Giordano Bruno (burned at the stake) and Galileo Galilei.

Blue laws forcing other businesses to stay closed so churches can generate more revenue.

Mayors, senators, and presidents voted into office not because they’re right for the job, but because of their religious beliefs.

Abuse of power, authority and trust by religious leaders (for financial gain or sexual abuse of followers and even children) – but hey, atheists are the immoral ones.

People accepting visual and auditory hallucinations unquestioningly as divine, sometimes with fatal results.

Suicide bombers, who are certain they will be rewarded in heaven.

Discrimination against atheists, such as laws stating they may not hold public office or testify in court.

Missionaries destroying/converting smaller, “heathen” religions and cultures.

Hardship compounded by the guilt required to reconcile the idea of a fair god with reality (“why is God punishing me? What have I done wrong? Don’t I have enough faith?”).

Human achievements – from skillful surgery to to emergency landings – attributed to gods instead of to the people actually responsibl

Where is the best place to by sustainable dairy, meat, and eggs in Berkeley? ?

I live in Berkeley, CA. I don’t drive which ironically makes it more difficult to by sustainable foods. I want to b some good, sustainable meat and eggs and if they have dairy too, than all the better.

After reading about feedlots with sick animals eating organic corn, I want to improve what I am getting. Where can I find these foods near BART or a bus line?

The Expert answers:

Berkeley Bowl Market. They carry Rosie/Rocky, Nieman Ranch, and other humane farms’ products. It’s better to support a local business than Whole Foods, and their produce is as cheap as you’ll ever find it.

Laura asks…

What are the different strategies that the world uses to become a sustainable?

What are the different strategies that the world uses to become a sustainable in these topics

Transportaion
Food Production
Waste management
Density

The Expert answers:

Neither the world as a whole, any of the countries in it, nor most of the people in any of the countries have a strong interest in becoming “sustainable”. They all:

– think it costs too much

– want someone else to pay for it all (not only money but also inconvenience, reduced life-style, etc.)

– prefer to believe it is not a problem they have to worry about.

Http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainability

So the answer is that the world doesn’t use any strategies to become sustainable.

As resource costs increase, there will be steps taken to reduce the use of those resources, but that has nothing to do with sustainability.

For example, coal and crude oil are not renewable so no use of them can be called sustainable. You hear about cars with better milage, but do you hear about cars that use no non-sustainable fuel? (Electric cars rely on electricity – most of the electricity, in the U.S and in the world, is produced by burning coal. You hear of more solar and wind power; you don’t hear about shutting down all the coal plants, so electric cars don’t count as sustainable.)

Metals you take out of the ground are not renewable. The world wants China to mine and sell more, not less of the rare earths.

Sandy asks…

Can you list some electric plug- in cars? I need some advice on Eco friendly cars!?

My family needs a new car and i need the type of cars to help buy one

The Expert answers:

See the link below. But really right now your best bet is a regular non-plug in hybrid like the Toyota Prius unless you can wait a year or two.

Betty asks…

I know its eco-friendly and power to the green…but are these super tiny cars you see on the street safe?

All Im saying is that these little tiny electric cars are a good idea when it comes to reducing pollution in the air….but what happens when these cars are involved in a major accident? Just say your cruising down the street in your tiny eco friendly car…and out of nowhere a bus slams in the side of you….you’re DONE…there’s really not much car to protect you…I mean I saw this one tiny car and the guy was damn near sitting on the dashboard with his head a couple of inches from the windshield…what protection does he really have if he looses control and slams into a light pole??? Do you agree or disagree…keep in mind I know people aren’t hauling ass down the streets in those things…but who’s to say how people are driving around you in these big SUV’s …740 ils….buses…oh god not to mention if a train hits it….

The Expert answers:

You are wrong. Its not how big your car is its how well it is made that matter in an accident. I have seen small well build cars get into accidents with bigger cars and bigger cars were getting destroyed. And reading the last comment you made “oh god not to mention if a train hits it” If a train hits you, it doesn’t matter what car you are in you are dead.

Linda asks…

What is/would be the most the eco friendly car ever made?

I mean to say,which car is/would be the car which has/would have absolutely no disadvantages of a car like :1.consuming fuel and thus emptying the natural reserves and 2.causing pollution.And of course would the most eco friendly car be as exciting to drive like a sports car?

The Expert answers:

A bicycle with lots of gears.

Mandy asks…

what is the most inexpensive, eco friendly car available in the US?

i was reading about the Tata Nano which only costs $2500 but is not yet in the states. it also only has 33hp- i was hoping for something with a little more oomph. what are my other options for small fuel friendly cars?

The Expert answers:

Mini Cooper. 32/40
smart Car. 27/33 I believe.
Or the RSX. 25/29.

Lisa asks…

why indians r not adopting eco friendly cars and use good mixture of fuel & alcohole used in other nations?

The Expert answers:

Sounds like a pretty broad term, who are you refferring to, North American Indians, South American Indians or the peoples of India.

You are reffering to a race of people when the entire human race is involved in this eco tradgedy in the making.
Pointing fingers hardly resolves any problems as it is a global problem, get your facts straight

What can be done to increase Chikan here in the US?

Countries like Japan are years ahead of the United States not only in terms of product innovation, and environmental issues, they are also well ahead of us in the area of Chikan. What steps should the government take to increase awareness and make Chikan more widespread here in America?

Helen asks…

Is there any organization or company in alexandria that would support us in our environmental project?

Me and my friends in (Egypt-Alexandria) are part of the Global Environmental Youth Convention taking part in August 2008 in (China). And we were part of it last year in Dubai and took the 1st place prize in the Paper Waste project.
In part 3(starting now) of our course we have to do a project related to sustainable development and the environment.
We need an organization or company or hotel or supermarket or resort(any of the kind) that would be eager to support our project and idea “by carrying/trying them out”. We are going to be dealing with (Waste recycling/reducing) issue. e.g. reducing usage of paper and recycling. or reducing the usage of plastic.
I urgently need to find it.
Thanks in advance.

Richard asks…

environmental issues/waste management in the workplace?

anyone know any useful ideas on how to mange the energy we use, and waste (mainly paper) we throw away in the office? Also- any important facts we should know about the environment- not like the obvious ones- but like some statistics etc that can give us a bit more drive to become more eco-friendly?

thanks a lot 🙂

The Expert answers:

Depending on the size of your business there are many paper shredding/recycling companies that can provide service. The document shredders/bins can accomodate paper clips, staples, and folder brackets and they pick up. This works for medium and larger offices, smaller offices may have to collect and drive to the recycler themselves.

Look into ways to reduce the paper. Use email, databases, websites, electronic billing and payment, computer filing. Encourage employees to not print drafts or emails. Accept digital signatures from PDF where you can so docs don’t have to be printed.

For energy: the obvious ones that you’d do in your home – control the thermostat, change lightbulbs, use power strips, turn off lights, computers, equipment. If employees listen to music encourage them to play it on the PC or phone system instead of a radio or CD player.

For statistics I’d suggest creating your own internal stats. Collect the waste paper for a week and weigh it, then calculate how many trees it took on an online calculator. That way it’s personal. Or have contests, for every $1 saved on the power bill the employees get to share $0.25 or pool it for a prize or party. The company still saves $0.75!

David asks…

environmental research?

I am an undergraduate student studying bioengineering and I hope to eventually make a career applying bioengineering techniques to helping the environment and working on environmental issues. I was actually inspired to do so when I spent some time with some members of the forest service in Tennessee and they told us about the issues with the eastern hemlock trees and the research and field work that is going on to save them….I really want to try to find a job/internship helping out on a similar project but I have no idea where to look or who to contact.

If anyone has any idea of companies or organizations that are doing environmental research preferably in the northern CA area, let me know because i would love to contact them for possible future internship opportunities!

The Expert answers:

I think you’ll find there aren’t many companies which do research on non-commercial plants. I would actually suggest picking up a job with the California state government or the national Forest Service in the area, as both are tasked to maintain the public forest resources. It won’t be called an internship – just a seasonal job, but the experience is the same.

Ken asks…

What are the general or main duties of a US coast guard marine safety officer?

USCG marine safety officers are in charge of what exactly? Do they deal with environmental issues? very curious, possible career path? What are some civilian careers that would follow serving?

The Expert answers:

“M” officers can do a bunch of different things.

Waterways Management: These folks take care of things like writing regulations that cover Limited Access areas and Safety or Security Zones around important sites (barges used to launch fireworks, major marine events like regattas, VIP visits and such). They also manage our Aids to Navigation missions. Aquatic Nuisance Species and Marine Mammal protection also fall to them – trying to stop the former and save the latter.

Marine Inspections and Investigations: Our commercial vessel structural inspectors are almost all officers. These folks will put on coveralls and climb through the bilges and inside double hulls of vessels to ensure that they are still safe to operate. Our Investigators are our detectives that investigate incidents after they’ve happened.

General Marine Safety Duty: These folks are involved in supervising our Pollution Investigators (enlisted folks), Facility Inspectors, Container Inspectors, and Port State Control boarding officers – and end up getting qualified to do these missions.

On top of all of this, they are saddled with the “crap” duties of every junior officer, standing duty as the Command Duty Officer, and various collateral duties like heading up the Morale Committee and stuff like that.

Civilian jobs can include CSI, police officer/state trooper, facility security officer (the overall manager of security, not a security guard!!), site supervisor for pollution clean-up companies, office manager, and a bunch of other stuff.

George asks…

WHICH alternative energy company did Warren Buffett invest $385M in?

Warren Buffett invested $385M in wind power and Bill Gates has placed millions in fuelcell, both of which are alternative energy sources. Does anyone know WHICH company, stock or shares that these guys have invested? Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Warren Buffett invested in Mid-American. They have some wind power in their portfolio. The company Bill Gates invested in, like everything else he touches these days, failed miserably…

Sandy asks…

Hillary Clinton says she will use excess oil company profits to invest in alternative energy?

The special section notes the Clinton proposal. Stock profits are from private corporations and investors. Would you allow a politician to use your profits for alternative energy development without your knowledge or approval? Could this be a political ploy?

The Expert answers:

Essentially, that makes those companies government companies. She just tryin to get elected by using the evil oil companies as the villain. Sure, they made lots of money this past year. But, what happens if you look at their balance sheet and compare it to other large companies. You can’t just look at the profits. There are expense and cost fluctuations. We already have a process for taking companies money. It’s called taxes. The government can’t just waltz in and say they want more. Smacks of socialism or communism. I’m not gonna start calling people comrade or stand in line for 3 hrs for toilet tissue like in past failed government systems. If she thinks the oil companies broke some laws then she can charge them and possible fine them. She can’t just decide who made to much and what they should do with it. My wife and I already pay a butt-load of taxes. Hilary would have us give all and become a welfare country.

The reason the U.S. Is greatest economic power ever is because of capitalism. You work hard, use your head and you can become very wealthy. You should not be punished for that.

Robert asks…

How many jobs could the U.S. create in 4 years by investing heavily in solar and wind energy alternatives?

The book “Project New America” puts great stock in alternative energy investments for lifting the country out of the recession. Here’s a link if you’d like to review it yourself: http://www.sitenet.com/books/NewAmerica/New%20America%207.pdf. How well do you believe this could work?

The Expert answers:

I would prefer they invest in Nuclear Power. It is more reliable, works in all climate areas, less environmental impact area, and cheaper power.

Nothing wrong with Solar and Wind, they are just not as cost effective and efficient.

Nancy asks…

Most promising rising alternative/renewable energy stock?

I am looking to invest in renewable energy. Solar/wind/tide etc… i was wondering what some of the best options are out there that are going to be rising in the near future. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

I know General Electric (GE) and Siemens (SI) are the biggest manufacturers of wind turbines in the United States.

Solar stocks didn’t perform well in 2008, but keep watching ASTI and TSL. Maybe you’ll be the first to buy them when they go up. TSL went up temporarily after inauguration day (1/30/2009).

Dont invest in Evergreen Energy who is in that business or trying to be just in case you run across that name. I am not sure when these companies will start to feel the impact of this.

Dont know any individual companies, sorry

dont use sharebuilder, switch to tradeking. I started with sharebuilder. Tradeking charges 50% less

Are renewable energy sources better for the enviorment then nonrenewable?

I was just wondering if renewable energy sources are better to the enviorment then nonrnewable.
ok, thank you to everyone.
i just needed to know if burning stuff like biomass would cause more or less pollution to the word then say, gas.

The Expert answers:

Yes, like trees. We can always grow more, but oil? Nope, once it’s used it’s used.

Jenny asks…

How in demand will renewable energy jobs be in the near future?

I’m really worried about the economy and looking for a quick certification so I can have some sort of qualification in case it totally goes under. I found a 14 credit hour renewable energy certification at a community college. Do you think this will do any good for finding jobs?

The Expert answers:

In general, now is a great time to get into the field, as it is still relatively young and growing fast, so there’s an overall lack of truly experienced workers in the field. But whether or not you will easily find a job really depends on what you want to do in the sector and what your background is. For positions that don’t require any real technical knowledge about the field (i.e. Public affairs, legal, accounting, finance, construction), then jobs should be pretty easy to find, even with no formal training/certificate in renewable energy. There are some positions, such as engineers, scientists, environmentalists, or developers where you can probably find a position without any previous experience, but the certificate you mention would certainly help in getting yourself noticed as someone who is really motivated and desiring to be in the field. Then there are the most technical positions, such as plant operators or consultants where a formal degree would probably be most helpful in landing a position.

In short, the course you mention is a great idea to get started, but you should also do some research on the exact position you’re interested in to see how much background employers expect you to have in the field. For some positions, a short course may be sufficient, in others, it may not be. But if you are motivated and persistent, do all you can to learn about the field and talk to people in the field, and eventually, you should be able to land a position.

Nancy asks…

I am looking for renewable energy companies that trade on the stock market?

Yahoo Finance or MSN Money are good and free tools you can use. Just search for ‘renewable energy’ or ‘green’ companies. Good example of one start up that is getting lots of attention is Beacon Corp (BCON).

Joseph asks…

Integration of conventional and energy plants for the utilization of renewable energy sources?

I need to write project on this topic “Integration of conventional and energy plants for the utilization of renewable energy sources”. Any web sites or literature will help me! Any help is appreciated…

The Expert answers:

Do web searches on “co-fuels” or “cofuel” fired steam plants. A number of cities around the world use them for steam production for their central steam heat facilities and for electricity generation. Many utilize windfall and dead fall trees.

All it really means is that things like shredded tires and coal for example, or trash and coal, or trash and natural gas.

Many things moss peat can be burned along with coal or instead of coal to produce heat.

Anyone who supports nuclear is mal informed about nuclear and those companies promoting it. It leaves a legacy that will last longer than the sun, and it is an energy source that the global society has outgrown as it has matured, just as you outgrew your doctor dentons as you matured. Nuclear drinking water is a real possibility because so much is stored along rivers that supply or feed into rivers that supply drinking water to over half the US population. And they will be contaminated because dry cask storage was a short term fix that has become long term- they leak or now, or soon will.

Nuclear gives new meaning to “…a beaming smile…”

David asks…

What are some negative consequences of renewable energy sources?

I dont need specific consequences of renewable energy sources like Wind Energy can only function when Wind is present. A broad and more general answer is what i am looking for. I can think of one very obvious one which is that it is not as efficient as fossil fuels. But i need more, thx 😀

The Expert answers:

Lets take wind energy in the city of New York! It will take at least 1million wind energy towers to provide energy just to the city of NY. Question were we will put them? It will take acres and acres of land to put them, then comes the next issue, we will have to divert airplanes from their normal fly path to avoid collisions with the towers, that will create an increase in fuel consumption for the airlines, next issue , birds that will get kill during seasonal emigration, and finally the cost to put the one million towers and to maintanence of them will be gastronomical. Example. During the winter gets what will hapen ? Durins storms? During thundering? As for organic, every body knows that was a fiasco and the mony wasted by using corn to produce fuel. First it created a demand for it (the corn) andevry other product that use corn went sky rocket in price, then here came the storms and the corn fills went under water, dammaging the crops, along with the winter. So her it comes solar panels, it only work with the sun up, againg winter comes and then frossen crystals crack, need lots of acres to actully had enough power to lit a gread, the same question comes were will going to put them? Them comes the enviromentalist and animal activist, assumming we put the towers and the sun panels we will have to use some of the land dedicated to animal santuaries ,forest will be deforest in order to clear the lands to put the toys. So i said lest drill and use our natural resources they are working very well. Hypocresy in the theme, eviromentalist espesilly females will scream about saving the earth ,pollution, and waste, but they will never give up PAMPERS!!!!! They will never go back to the diapers that need to clean a wash. Organic farms are using humane waist to fertilize the land, well if the idea was not to put quemicalsin the ground wy is ok tho use humand waist , after all it is procces with amonia and a good amount of it.

How is sustainable development sustainable? *sigh*?

I know its a hard question. At our school the statement ‘sustainable development as a concept is unsustainable’ came up. i disagreed but couldnt come up with any valid arguments.
Lets see if anyone here can. it will be much appreciated ; )

The Expert answers:

Sustainable development :

Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the natural environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future. The term was used by the Brundtland Commission which coined what has become the most often-quoted definition of sustainable development as development that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

The field of sustainable development can be conceptually broken into three constituent parts: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and sociopolitical sustainability.

The United Nations Division for Sustainable Development lists the following areas as coming within the scope of sustainable development:

* Agriculture
* Atmosphere
* Biodiversity
* Biotechnology
* Capacity-building
* Climate Change
* Consumption and Production Patterns
* Demographics
* Desertification and Drought
* Disaster Reduction and Management

can anyone tell me the name of a sector of the horse industry that takes steps to sustainable development?

i need to evaluate the success of measures taken by one sector of the horse industry towards sustainable development and can’t find any pieces that have the right information. has anyone got some good websites for me to look on?

The Expert answers:

In February’s Equus Magazine, there is an article on ways to be green around the farm. This may be a good place to start!
Http://www.equisearch.com/equus/
It is still on the front page of their website too.

It gives a lot of suggestions and tips for horse owners to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Perhaps you could use this to look at the horse industry’s efforts in general rather than a specific sector??

Oh—and make sure to check out the “related articles” at the bottom once you click on the main story—looks like lots of good stuff for you!

Can anyone suggest recent ‘sustainable development for tourism’ examples in the UK?

I’m looking to undertake an investigation of the extent of public / community involvement in sustainable development for tourism and require some assistance in locating a case study. The internet turns up lots of well-researched (large-scale) examples, but I’m after a LOCAL / VILLAGE / TOWN example.

Has anything happened in your area (or a neighbouring one) where members of the public were heavily involved or, alternatively, where they were not consulted at all?

Thank you!

What is rustic furniture? ?

I seen an ad where there selling a drawer of 5 cabinets that it says its rustic furniture. Eco friendly product does this mean its pressed wood? Or is it still made of solid wood? Can someone defined this t me so I can get a better understanding? Thank u

The Expert answers:

Hmm I think it means solid wood. Ikea just came out with lots of rustic furniture too. I dated a rodeo cowboy once, he rode broncs and bulls, grew up on a ranch in Texas and he went into his “backyard” cut down some trees and made his own bed frame, and all the tables in his house. It was amazing. That was some serious rustic furniture haha.

Betty asks…

eco friendly upholstery steam cleaning help?

I am super thrifty and have just bought all of my furniture for our new house as second hand. I also have a baby on the way any day now and would like to clean the upholstery-either professionally or myself. I can rent a steam cleaner from the store BUT am wondering if there is another compound to use besides the stuff that is typically used sold alongside the rental steamers…it needs to be non-toxic. Any idea? I am in the LA area. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Vinegar, Lemon Juice, Club Soda, Baking Soda all have great cleaning properties and are non-toxic. For the furniture, I would start by sprinkling baking soda all over the fabric, then vacuum it with a regular vacuum – this should help get rid of odor. Steam cleaning will then sanitize the upholstery. Also, many products are being sold now that are safer to use, World Market carries a brand that I believe is non-toxic, though it is a little more expensive, and even Target sells Method brand which I think is also non-toxic. Be careful though because if something is bio-degradable, that doesn’t mean it is non-toxic.

Good luck and congrats on the little one!

what is eco friendly wood?

would like to know the definition of what eco friendly wood is, and how it applies to furniture

I imagine there are different types. For example, bamboo is eco friendly b/c it grows quickly and is easily replanted. For furniture, ecofriendly probably means reclaimed. It’s a great way to reduce your footprint. Plus, reclaimed furniture usually has more personality.
