The amtrack is my personal favorite… think that would be there if Biden wasnt in the picture?
How about …
246 million tax break for Hollywood movie investors in big budget movie projects over an 11-year period…

Jenny asks…

What has OBAMA done for you not to like him?

The most important thing that OBAMA and his administration has done negatively…. is passing the so-called ECONOMIC RECOVERY PACKAGE, also known as the STIMULUS BILL 787 Billion dollars of taxpayer money filled with all sorts of earmarked “pet projects” to reserve misapproriated huge amounts of money over a period of time for careless spending that doesn’t help the country or the American people. What does it sound like? A scam, you’re right. A method of telling you one thing and doing another, the old switch-a-roo. Filling the cookie jar with hard cold cash and being able to take from it at any time for by politicians unaccountably. We are talking almost a Trillion dollars passed overnight without any argument or question. HOW ABOUT tax breaks, tax cuts, business incentives, to natuarlly boost the economy to have more money in circulation in the people’s pockets???

NEWS FLASH…. the stimulus didn’t work, I could of told you that a long time ago!!!! BECAUSE this is just a small list of where the money is going …..

This one issue alone should of been enough for the people to recognize exactly what he’s trying to do to all of us intentionally…. Billed Credit Card for generations and generations to come… and that’s okay? How fast was the Stimulus Bill passed? And why didn’t anybody in Congress read the bill? Why wasn’t there any media coverage pertaining to the bill? Why isn’t OBAMA (on the campaign trail once again) reviewing how much of a good job the Stimulus Bill has done for the economy? I am sure that this will be all EXPOSED and a hot topic during election what he and his administration has done to the people and the country!

Would someone explain to me on a line by line basis how these items stimulate the economy? Funny thing is the SCHIP bill that just passed is funded by tax increases on smokers. But this bill has $75 million for “smoking cessation activities.” So how can we pay for SCHIP if we are going to get smokers to quit?

The Expert answers:

There is no need to go line-by-line.
It is pure pork, plan and simple.
Although some of the items, like the Coast Guard ice-breaker, are good expenditures, they are not able to STIMULATE the economy. Tax incentives to companies who hire additional full time employees, or increase productivity are the ways to go, but

• $412 million for CDC buildings and property

• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.

• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

Are not justified. These items must go.

Whereas, the

• $1.2 billion for “youth activities,” including youth summer job programs.

Does pose a plausible stimulus, by preparing teens for entering the work force.

This is why a line-item-veto or single item legislation must be enacted. And to think Obama promised change. The only change here is what will be left in the tax payer’s wallet when the Dems get done with us.

Sandy asks…

How will you tell YOUR senator to vote?

Obama says we will not survive if this isn’t passed…

Your Questions About Green Living

Steven asks…

Is lightning the largest and most abundance amount of renewable energy for Earth?

Lightning and thunderstorms occur all around the world. Some areas receive denser volumes of lightning than other parts of the world. From what I know, in the large bodies of ocean, there are usually strong winds and storms that gives off an abundance and nearly constant amount of lightning in the air.

Here is my suggestions and questions:

Construct a large ship with conductive material & technology to withstand and insulate high amounts of heat energy to boil h2o into steam, and then further powering and spinning a turbine to generate electricity off shore back into our power grid with power lines.

Nuclear power plants also contain rods that can withstand high temperatures of heat to generate large amount of electrical energy. Is it possible to divert and spread the enormous heat of lightning onto a piece of conductive material, making it extremely hot to boil water into steam to power a turbine?

Advantages for implications:
A ship is able to move around the bodies of water to capture an optimized amount of lightning.
Using mother nature to produce energy is a clean and renewable method, no risk of nuclear melt down.
A large scale production of ships with platforms that can turn this idea into reality may possibly solve the world‘s energy crisis.

What kind of material can withstand heat damages from lightning strikes? Can franklin’s kite transfer the electric current of lightning from one point or location and out to another point with the use of rods? Since we can already manipulate the climate to produce artificial rain and thunder storms, can we turn this idea into efficient way to generate electricity by following a nuclear power plants model?

I know there are a lot of things to consider like the cost to implement, safety of the ship from disaster and terrorist, and even the amount of lightning strikes that occur. I would like to receive your feedback, especially from scientist who have studied this subject. What are the flaws and problems that arise?
The suns surface temperature is 4600 Celsius.

The temperature of a lightning in mid air is ten times hotter than that. The sunlight is heat that is absorbed and captured over a period of time to consistently turn water into steam.
It is not tiny when the strike of one lightning is ten times hotter than the sun. On top of that, my idea is not to transform the energy of electricity from lightning DC directly into AC into our power grid. Nuclear power plants do not work that way either.

The Expert answers:

No, it is tiny compared to the others. Much easier to use solar panels or solar heat, that is within our technology.

And it is unpredictable and of voltages much too high to harness.

Edit, yes, lightning has a lot of power, but it is for a very brief period of time, and you collection hardware has to be there to collect it.

Bottom line, the amount of energy that you can collect over any area is very small compared to that you can get from sunlight.

Susan asks…

How can a Renewable Resource such as Solar Energy be used to reduce the world’s dependency on Fossil Fuels?

And alleviate the world‘s energy crisis?

The Expert answers:

All renewable energy resources are used by all agencies to reduce the usage of fossil fuels. Cheap and easy available source of energy is solar energy by using photo cells. Most of the government buildings are installed with solar energy generation and usage and also enacted to enforce solar energy usage in dwellings for all purposes such as lighting, cooking, pumping water and so on. This is a great valuable substitute for fossil fuels.

William asks…

What is the best renewable energy?

The world is rapidly changing and our dependence on the earths fossil fuels are diminishing. As we turn to alternative methods of energy, what is proving to be the best renewable power source?. Examples of renewable energy are Tidal Power, Wave Power and Solar Power.

The Expert answers:

Wind while widely promoted is quite inefficient.
Solar is pretty good, especially in equatorial regions.
Speaking from the UK perspective I would promote tidal and wave energy. They are efficient and predictable.

I would also not dismiss nuclear in this debate, although it is not considered truely renewable in the same sense as these others, it is currently undergoing many methodological improvements which would allow the reuse of waste to a much lower level. (also it is the grey area between renewables and non renewables)

all in all i would rate the true renewable as tide, solar, wind in that order.
Then nuclear would outweigh all these but due to misinformation and scare mongering its not being considered the same.

Joseph asks…

1.What energy sources, if any, cannot be traced to sunlight falling on the earth?

2. What are some of the disadvantages that have kept renewable energy sources from supplying more than a small fraction of the world‘s energy?
3. when two objects attract each other electrically, must both of them be charged?
4. When two objects repel each other electrically, must both of them be charged?
5. What reasons might be there for the universal belief among scientists that there are only two kinds of electric charge?

Please help me with this…..i badly needed your help.
If possible please answer all the questions with explanations..
May God bless us all. Happy New Year

The Expert answers:

1. Geothermal energy based on the decay of radioactive isotopes within the core of the earth.
2. The issues are specific to the sources of the renewable energy. There is no general answer to this.
3. Yes.
4. Yes.
5. That is all that has been found, and two charge types are all that are needed for electromagnetic phenomena.

Sharon asks…

help with my renewable energy poster?

I’m making a renewable energy poster, and I want to work on it and finish it this weekend. I already have an idea of how to draw it out, and what goes where, but I would like some help with these areas:

– a simple definition of Clean/Renewable Energy
– why using that type of energy is good
– three facts on wind power, solar power and bio fuel power.

Also, what do you think of my slogan; “Cleaner Energy for a Cleaner World“?

Please go all out in your answers. I’ve done a lot of research into the area, but I can’t seem to condense everything so that it can go onto a poster and not be too overwhelming for the reader…especially since I found out the posters are going to be made into a calendar for 2011. Thanks! 🙂

The Expert answers:

Clean energy – energy whose production doesn’t contribute to pollution or global warming

Renewable energy – energy derived from sources which can be fully replenished indefinitely (for the life of our planet) using environmentally sustainable processes

Why good? – because it provides a sustainable pathway to the future

Wind power – intermittent, highly variable, easily harnessed using high turbines, fully renewable and sustainable, “clean”
Solar power – 50% maximum availability, highly variable, easily harnessed using photovoltaic or thermal collectors, fully renewable and sustainable, “clean”
Bio fuel power – partially renewable but not fully sustainable (may produce net CO2 emissions, may compete with food production), not “clean”

Slogan: For a renewable energy poster, why not “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable World” ?

Your Questions About Green Living

Robert asks…

is our food production system sustainable?

i have a case study to do and i cant find anything about an argument for our food production system being sustainable. HELP!

The Expert answers:

No, it is not sustainable because, like other economic sectors, agriculture depends very strongly on fossil fuels for energy whether directly or indirectly. Energy from unrenewable fossil fuels is required to power farm machinery and equipment, for transport, food processing, electricity, and making agrochemicals. In other words, almost the entire chain in food production requires energy from fossil fuels.

Increasing world population, increasing demand for biofuels, and changing to a more meat-based diets mean increased pressure for deforestation, pollution, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

Sustainable agriculture practices are now growing in importance and becoming increasingly more mainstream. However, we are still long way to achieving a truly sustainable system worldwide.

Chris asks…

Is Sushi a Sustainable Food?

I am throwing a party for my 13th Birthday and i want to make it as sustainable as possible ,I’m of food first on the list of sustainable things, is Sushi sustainable?

The Expert answers:

Yes. It can be very sustainable. The rice and seaweed(nori) alone are great to start with. Thankfully, there are corporations that are taking responsibility for this earth we are taking from.

Thomas asks…

What is the the best food to eat before a run?

I heard bananas were good are there other foods that are more sustainable?

The Expert answers:

Oatmeal porridge with skim milk, honey and banana slices.
Got complex carbs to ensure sustained release of energy, low in fat so wont stress the digestive system causing cramps, and has a good electrolytic balance.
Banana is the most commom pre run food of atheletes you can almost never go wrong with those.

Ruth asks…

What are some unsustainable food companies?

All of the food companies/brands that I research are going sustainable so I am having a hard time finding ones that aren’t yet.
Thank you Chase! You made some excellent points and I will look up YUM to see what I can find.

The Expert answers:

Don’t confuse large corporations buying up small organic labels and small sustainable companies as “going sustainable”. This is a process of greenwashing their business and a way for them to tap into another market, that is all.
Take for example, Toms of Maine products, used to be small independent company, now owned by Colgate-Palmolive.
There are many companies that are falling to this situation of being bought by larger corporations.
Do a bit of research into YUM! Brand foods and their history, they are not alone in their corporate actions, but it is a good place to start.

Additional:
Rick B. Sustainable practice isn’t about whether or not an animal becomes extinct. It is about whether or not resources are wasted in the production of food. An excellent example of this would be approximately 80% of the antibiotics sold in the US are fed to animals being raised for slaughter. Or another example would be the usage of food crops (corn as an example) being used to feed animals being raised for meat.
This is what is meant by sustainable practice. Unfortunately given the amount of money generated from unsustainable practice, the only real motivator for corporations to embrace sustainability is not because they have suddenly developed ethics (corporations don’t have a habit of that) but more because the public is increasingly demanding it. And corporations? They do what is needed to ensure their profit margins only grow, not shrink.

John asks…

Why do we grow a lot of our food in Califorina?

I mean it NEVER rains here so we take large amounts of water from other places to water the very hot and dry landscape.

Why do it when it’s not sustainable in a place where there is little amounts of water, it doesn’t rain, and it gets really hot???

Wouldn’t it be better to grow more food in America indoors in tall buildings????

The Expert answers:

A lot of the water in Southern California comes from a canal connected to the Colorado River.

Your Questions About Green Living

Lisa asks…

According to the Dept of Energy, 0bama’s 20 billion spent on “green jobs” has cost $5 million ?

for each permanent job. Do you think we should continue wasting taxpayer money to support an industry that is not ready for such massive taxpayer spending?
Wouldn’t it be better to put some scientists together with a small manufacturing company to work on producing viable energy alternatives, before wasting so much money on companies that are going bankrupt or moving overseas to produce their product once the taxpayers have gotten them started?

The Expert answers:

No, i don’t.

Donna asks…

What will be the most needed jobs in the new eco-economy?

What careers / job skills will be most needed as it becomes clearer every day that we need to find alternative energy sources & a solution to global climate change? As a follow up, what companies today are leading the efforts to accomplish these goals?

The Expert answers:

Dealing with PEOPLE will always be required in any industry.
Dealing with customers OR employees.

Managers of people are always needed. People are people regardless of the industry. There will always be HR departments.

Think about people skills, psychology, and business management. Don’t get locked into ONE industry that you need to rely on. You can fit in ANYWHERE with good people skills.

Robert asks…

“Alternative Energy”?

Why are so many on the right against forms of energy other than oil? They say it will destroy our economy; that makes no sense. Oil may be a cash cow for some but anyone who has studied business knows that the cash cow is the 3rd of 4 stages in a product life cycle. Developing new energy sources is one of the BEST things we can do as Americans. It will develop new industries, new jobs, grow our economy in something other than the “service sector”, grow our own energy independence, wrestle back some of our financial future from China, and help to break the need for us to be jerked around in the middle east. This is all good stuff. Why do so many on the right badmouth alternative energy development? It doesn’t make sense why so many want to stay on the oil teat.

The Expert answers:

I do not think they are against other forms of energy, they just understand that there is no other source as efficient and cheap as oil yet. There is no point in investing in an energy source that few people will actually use because it is so expensive.

George asks…

Will Environmentalism be less of a concern to Americans as environmentally-hazardous jobs get shipped overseas?

Since a lot of the industrial, manufacturing, and mining jobs are being outsourced to places like China and Latin America, doesn’t that mean there’ll be less industrial emissions on American soil?

Also, as fuel efficiency increases and alternativeenergy are poised to enter the market, doesn’t this mean there should be far less carbon produced on US roads and highways?

So do you think environmentalism will become more of a concern for, say, China and Guatemala, than the United States?

The Expert answers:

No, we will just try exporting environmentalism to those counties as well. We care about the environment everywhere

Michael asks…

Which 1 is it???!!! will alternative energy hurt or help the economy and why??!!?

Some say it will help the economy because it creates jobs and indirect monetary interaction by loans and increase activity in local stores and less reliance and spending on foreign fuels. but others say that it will harm the economy long term by displacing the jobs of oil companies, which I guess there is a lot that it connected ( lots of products have ingredients derived from oil). And some other arguments but I forget…. So what will alternative energy REALLY do to the economy?? …..now, I do realize I’m giving off the impression that I am incredibly ignorant about the topic, AND yes, I admit that I don’t have a deep understanding of the topic and I’m trying to correct it right now.

The Expert answers:

It’s not that hard. Alternative energy helps the economy if and when it is economical. In other words, when it is profitable and more efficient that the fossil fuel alternative. And I mean in the absence of subsidies and government intrusion. When alt energy can stand on its own, that’s when it’ll help the economy. Until then, it hurts the economy. Even if it creates jobs. Yes the government can force job creation in one sector if it wants, but at what price? One must realize there is an opportunity cost to distorting markets and making them do something unnatural — what’s not obvious is the other jobs that are destroyed and the economic efficiency lost as a result of the market distortion.

That does not necessarily mean we shouldn’t use alt energy, if we decide there are reasons more important than the economy to do so. But don’t kid yourself that it helps the economy when it doesn’t.

If the economy left to its own free operation wants to import oil or burn coal, that’s because oil and coal are the most economically efficient choices. And that’s pretty much the situation today.

You use the future tense “will”, so I’ll point out that things change over time. Someday as oil becomes more scarce and expensive, and technology improves alternatives, then alternate energy will at some point become the more economical choice, and we’ll all voluntary move to alt energy without any government prodding.

Peyton above is wrong to say that solar and wind have no cost after the initial outlay. People assume that since there is no fossil fuel being consumed. But they have a LOT of cost, which is why they are more expensive than fossil fuels. They use up a lot of land that must be leased, consume a lot of labor, and require unusually long transmission of electricity to get to where people need it, with all the inherent waste. None of those things are free. Also the initial capital outlay is properly depreciated, recognized as a monthly expense over many years — according to universally accepted accounting practices that reflect economic reality. Hence the cost of building a solar plant or wind farm is indeed an ongoing monthly expense spread out over decades. Hardly free. That’s why a coal plant per kilowatt produced is far cheaper, even including the tons of coal consumed everyday. (Coal is amazingly cheap).

Laura asks…

What are some ways to make my school eco friendly?

My friend and I are running for co-prez and we want to make our school eco friendly. We already have low-flush toilets and recycling bins. What else? 10 POINT TO BEST ANSWER! Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Recycle bins for sure.

How about some of the following:
Compost pile for ground clippings
Start an organic garden for the cafeteria
Use recycled paper in computer lab
Make sure light bulbs are energy star certified or CFL compatible.
Solar panels to supplement energy usage

One of the biggest issues you’ll face is fundraising to make these happen. School budgets are super tight and don’t have a ton of wiggle room for additional spending. But you could lobby the school board to at least allocate a portion of the next years budget to eco-friendly efforts. Good luck.

How are eco-friendly detergents better for the enviroment?

Compared to those which are no ecofriendly ?

The Expert answers:

One huge thing that makes the difference is the presence of phosphates in the detergent. Phosphates are one of the number one polluters of our waterways. There is a whole slew of nasty stuff found in conventional cleaners though. Here is a list of commonly found chemicals in household detergents and cleaners: http://www.greenhomehints.com/2008/07/02/cleaning-products-you-should-avoid-at-all-costs/

bottling, jam making and preserving
willow items, baskets, lampshades
coppicing, drystone walling
curing meats and skins
making home prepartions for toiletries, medicines
making carts, buggies, trailers,
making own gardening implements/tools
bee keeping, making beeswax products
rag rug making, darning – who can darn now?

Any other old fashioned eco friendly skills you have?

What are some ways for home RENTERS to be eco-friendly without making permanent modifications to the house?

I rent a house and want to implement some energy-saving or ecofriendly options in my home life, but I won’t be here long enough to bother the landlord with making permanent modifications.

Also, I’m pretty broke. Anybody have any ideas?

The Expert answers:

The 1st and most important word in the mantra is reduce. Reduce the toxins in your cleaning supplies, using baking soda and vinegar can save you money and they with a little liquid soap can clean almost anything. Reduce the amount of energy you use, opening windows when to let a cool breeze in or opening drapes to let the sunlight in etc. Adjusting your thermostat up a few degrees in the summer and down in the winter can save energy as well. Only washing full loads of laundry or dishes, and wearing clothes that look clean more than once before washing. Reduce waste, buying the right portion so you don’t have food waste, cooking at home and freezing leftovers can reduce food waste as well. I’ve noticed the healthier I eat the less garbage I create. Processed foods have excessive packaging as well as excessive chemicals.

Just think frugal and you are being kinder to the planet. Everything we do, use, buy or consume has an impact, so the less we buy the lower our impact.

Mandy asks…

Why is Obama having Napolitano claim climate change is the greatest risk we face in America?

And it’s just weird to hear Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, describe her department’s focus on environmental justice and climate adaptation. (Audio, our transcript):
So as we look at climate change, the climate change that we are in, and think about the environmental phenomenon that is happening in the course of our own lives, we translate that into increased drought. We translate that into increased likelihood of wildfires, particularly catastrophic fires in the West, we translate that into more category four and five hurricanes, and that affects communities around the gulf but also up and down the Atlantic seaboard and the Pacific as well, and other natural occurrences that are affected by changes in climate.

Changes in climate really translate into huge environmental changes that have impacts on communities and also on national security, because they raise not only the issues of making sure that we are taking into account and caring for the most at-risk populations, but that we are also looking at and planning for the potentiality of mass migrations, demographic changes, patterns, concentrations of economic assets, population growth in different areas, deteriorating infrastructure. All of this gets knit together under this umbrella of climate change and environmental adaptation.

That’s an expansive, expensive agenda, isn’t it? We thought Congress formed the Department of Homeland Security to more effectively address imminent threats to the American people, priorities like fighting terrorism, controlling our borders, and handling security at our ports and airports. Turns out the Department is instead working on EVERYTHING!

http://shopfloor.org/2010/12/if-jobs-are-the-priority-whats-environmental-justice/16902

http://shopfloor.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Napolitano-at-Environmental-Justice-Conference.pdf

The Expert answers:

This is an end run around congress. The Department of Homeland Security has shown its willingness to spend beyond its budget and even against the explicit wishes of congress. So far it has used millions of dollars from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act fund that was originally designed as a stimulus for the economy. Napolitano is pretty much claiming that everything and anything is a security issue and deserves new technology, staffing and, of course, funding.

Ruth asks…

Somebody could translate it into Spanish? 10 points + 5 stars?

Cheryl: So, Nick, you’ve worked as an environmental scientist in Australia.

Nick: Yeah, I have. I worked in my hometown in Tasmania, and in Tasmania, there’s many environmental issues, particularly involving logging of native forests there.

Cheryl: Oh, logging.

Nick: Yeah, logging.

Cheryl: I recently heard about logging problems in Brazil, I mean Belize in Central America. But what kind of logging issues do you have in Tasmania?

Nick: So, in Tasmania, there’s some very old forests, maybe hundreds of thousands of years old, and some companies are destroying them, clear-filling the forest, parts of the forest there.

Cheryl: Really! What are the companies using the forests for?

Nick: To make paper actually. To make wood chips, and then turn wood chips into paper.

Cheryl: So, there all paper companies?

Nick: Mm, paper companies.

Cheryl: Oh, really.

Nick: Or paper companies in the end. So initially, loggers, the people which log, go in, they take the trees, they take the trees to big industry, which then break them to wood chips, then make them into paper. And my job was to try to find out how we could minimize the destructiveness of that operation.

Cheryl: So what kind of destructiveness would the impact of having deforestation in Tassie …?

Nick: In Tassie?

Cheryl: Well, like many animals die obviously, and much biodiversity is taken away, but there’s ways to change that process and make it better, so some solutions are instead of clear-filling, just destroying the entire forest section, just take sections out of the forests. Make the forests look like, maybe a checkerboard, so you only take patches of forests, small patches and hopefully don’t kill too many animals in the process.

Cheryl: But wouldn’t that still destroy a percentage of wildlife living in those patches?

Nick: Yes, yeah, it will but we still use paper everywhere in the world, so if we use paper, well, the trees need to come from somewhere, so we need to get the practice possible.

Cheryl: Mm, I see.

Nick: So, it’s a bit of give-and-take.

Cheryl: We can’t stop using paper right?

Nick: Oh, I think we should stop using paper. I think we can, but at this stage it’s difficult maybe.

The Expert answers:

Who are the real anagonists in the political life of America today?

Is it really a political war between cons and libs or have the neocons managed to get us to fight with each other and ignore the real threat that they pose to our civil liberties, economic and environmental health….real conservatives and liberals have both evolved as time goes by, sometimes I have agreed more with conservatives on some issues, sometimes more with liberals…for instance, I thought Clinton should have been removed from office, not because of his affair, but because he lied to a grand jury….all my life I have respected the position of conservatives whether I agree or not, argue strongly, then go have a beet together, but lately the atmosphere has been poisoned.

The Expert answers:

Political bigots.

If you hate half the country, you are not of interest to me. You have divided this nation.

I am a democrat (not a liberal, not a socialist).

I do NOT hate any political party (I oppose some of their goals).

My country comes BEFORE my political party.

Antagonists? Political bigots and those who put their own ideology AHEAD of their country.

We may disagree on the direction the United States should go, but we need brakes and gas no matter what direction we are headed, and as a democrat who believes in:

Free speech, I must support republican talk radio’s rights;
Freedom of expression, I must support fundamentalist Christians;
Equality, I must support white men as well.

I may find some things they do as contemptible, but THEY are not contemptible.

That one difference makes the whole game different.

Dana once said that Obama was the best environmental president ever. Wow, Obama most likely never once considered the environment or ever walked in the wilderness in his entire life yet a liberal thinks he is an environmentalist. Do you support “America’s Climate Security Act of 2007?”?

S. 2191 was introduced Oct. 18th by Senators Lieberman and Warner, who are Chairman and Ranking Member, respectively, of the Senate Environment and Public Works, Subcommittee on Private Sector and Consumer Solutions to Global Warming and Wildlife Protection.

A key supporter of the bill, Environmental Defense, issued a statement saying that the bill would require that covered sectors, about 80% of the U.S. economy, reduce emissions by 15% below 2005 levels in 2020, a “strong target” that they say “helps put the U.S. on the path to much deeper reductions by the middle of the century.”

The bill also has support from the National Wildlife Federation, Exelon Corporation, PGE Corp; Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies.

Your Questions About Green Living

Carol asks…

Why don’t we live in a resource based economy?

A resource-based economy would replace the need for the current monetary economy, which is “scarcity-oriented” or “scarcity-based”. Resource-Based Economy is a system in which all goods and services are available without the use of money, credits, barter or any other system of debt or servitude.

Modern society has access to highly advanced technology and can make available food, clothing, housing and medical care; update our educational system; and develop a limitless supply of renewable, non-contaminating energy. By supplying an efficiently designed economy, everyone can enjoy a very high standard of living with all of the amenities of a high technological society.

A resource-based economy would utilize existing resources from the land and sea, physical equipment, industrial plants, etc. to enhance the lives of the total population. In an economy based on resources rather than money, we could easily produce all of the necessities of life and provide a high standard of living for all.

Should we be moving towards a resource based economy? If not why not? Can we get away from the scarcity based economy we are currently in and take a great leap forward towards a resource based economy? If we can, how will it happen? If we can’t, why not?

The Expert answers:

Most people in power like the fact that they are extremely well-off.

Why would they put that at stake so everyone can have food and clothes?

Betty asks…

What do you think of the venus project?

It’s useless to criticize the culture without providing alternatives. The Venus Project proposes plans for social change that work toward a peaceful and sustainable global civilization. It outlines an alternative social design where human rights are not just paper proclamations, but a way of life. The Venus Project has a vision of what the future can be if we apply what we already know to achieve a sustainable world civilization. It calls for a scientific redesign of our culture in which war, poverty, hunger, debt, and unnecessary human, suffering are viewed as not only avoidable, but unacceptable. Anything less will result in a disastrous continuation of the problems inherent in today’s world.

Simply stated, a resource-based economy focuses on resources rather than money, and provides an equitable distribution thereof in a humane and efficient manner. It is a system in which goods and services are available without the use of money, credit, barter, debt, or servitude.

The first objective is to eliminate scarcity. A resource-based economy overcomes scarcity by using renewable sources of energy, plus computerized automated manufacturing and inventory. It would design safe energy-efficient cities with advanced transportation systems, and would provide universal health care and more relevant education.
The aim of this new social design is to encourage an incentive system based on human and environmental concerns, and to avoid the shallow and self-centered goals of individual wealth, property, and power. These new incentives would help people evolve self-fulfillment and creativity, both materially and spiritually.

The Expert answers:

It sounds a lot better than what we currently have.

Does this make you made Republicans!?

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/06/11/MNI6116RIU.DTL&type=printable

Senate Democrats pushed a vote Tuesday on a bill to impose a windfall profits tax of 25 percent on the major oil companies, the proceeds going to subsidize new renewable energy. The bill’s sponsors said it is obscene that Exxon Mobil Corp. and other oil companies are making the largest profits in history while consumers are suffering.

But Republicans countered that imposing a punitive tax would only discourage oil companies from new oil exploration. The measure failed on a 51-43 vote, falling nine votes short of the 60 needed to break a potential filibuster.

Republicans also blocked debate on a measure to extend tax credits for wind, solar and other renewable energy sources. The bill failed on a 50-44 vote; GOP senators opposed the bill because it would have raised taxes on hedge-fund managers to pay for the tax credits.

Does this not just scream oil for the oil gods to you!!!
Republican plan

Arctic drilling: Open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil drilling.

Coastal drilling: Allow states to approve drilling for oil and natural gas off their coasts.

Encourage refineries: Offer incentives to oil companies to build new refineries.

More tax breaks: Create new tax breaks to speed the development of coal-to-liquid fuels.

Nothing about trying to find ways to remove ourselves from oil at all!!! Its all about the oil baby!!!

These are the reason I am an independent voter!!! As you can see these people in office have sold off their souls a long time ago and should be removed!!!
Error in question, not made its MAD!!!!
fouro33

Sorry, I am not going to buy into the whole supply and demand crap they are spiting out at us. Its one thing to make a buck and its another thing to make a buck off the backs of your fellow man!!

Should a group of people be allowed to control all aspects of a company. I think that falls under the laws of monopoly of which is against the law if I am not correct!

Have you ever see the movie a Beautiful Mind.

I dont think anybody in American minds profit!! Then again people in American do mind when they are being ran blantly over by the government and these companies.
Robert J

If they are just pandering for vote then why dont they pony up and show it down their throats.

As far as the companies goes they are getting any and everything they want from the government. I dont forsee them leaving any time soon even if things did change.

Could you commit on the other information please as well?
Brotherj

Maybe somebody should pony up the government and to the big oil companies. Maybe somebody should put their money where there mouth is. Why not pony up to them because you willing to settle for what they give you then change to make things better.

If this is the case they when everything keeps going to hell, you can say to the man on top can I please have a scrap of that bread and part of the meat because I am unable to buy gas to get to my job. Sounds like you sold yourself short sir!
Derail

Sometimes changes comes at a cost, American Revolution! We need to better our way of life and staying with the oil GODS is not one of them. We can either fall behind in the world or move forward to stay on top. I for one wound like to say that this country is still first place in 10 years.
Vote_usa

Point well made their sir and I do enjoy the fact that you understand how most think these two parties work on different side! In fact they work together for the better of themselves.

You point shows that we need more parties in office!

The Expert answers:

Your question should be, “Does this make you mad, ANYONE who wants to make money in their lives?”

IF Congress can decide that they don’t like how much money one business group is making and impose taxes on them to “punish” them, there’s nothing to stop them from declaring that anyone who makes over $50,000 a year is “making too much.”

This is the scenario behind the calls for “universal health care:” to stop doctors from making any money. (Of course, they don’t do anything about lawyers, since 80% of Congressmen are attorneys.)

Blood and Gore. Can you believe that Al Gore’s carbon credit trading company has that name?

You people are being led like sheep to the slaughterhouse with Al Gore’s mindless carbon nonsense:

The Money and Connections Behind Al Gore’s Carbon Crusade
by Deborah Corey Barnes

10/03/2007

Al Gore’s campaign against global warming is shifting into high gear. Reporters and commentators follow his every move and bombard the public with notice of his activities and opinions. But while the mainstream media promote his ideas about the state of planet Earth, they are mostly silent about the dramatic impact his economic proposals would have on America. And journalists routinely ignore evidence that he may personally benefit from his programs. Would the romance fizzle if Gore’s followers realized how much their man stands to gain?

Earlier this year Gore experienced a notable public relations debacle. The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a state think tank, revealed that he was an energy hog. Public records show that Gore’s Nashville mansion used in one month more than twice the electricity the typical American household uses in a year: His average monthly electric bill was more than $1,359. Moreover, Gore’s household energy use increased after An Inconvenient Truth, his film about global warming, was released to ecstatic reviews.

Never mind that the scientific community is divided over what causes global warming, how bad it is and how to deal with it. Gore plays Chicken Little to the media’s applause, insisting that the world is warming dangerously and that he has the solution.

The ‘Cap-and-Trade’ System

To resolve the “climate crisis,” Gore wants to put a cap on the production of greenhouse gases. He calls for an immediate freeze on U.S. emissions, a ban on new coal-fired power plants, tough new fuel-economy and energy-efficiency standards, renewable energy mandates, carbon taxes and mandatory targets and timetables for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Those emissions consist mostly of carbon dioxide (CO2), the byproduct of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas, which supply 85% of all U.S. energy. Gore’s blueprint to save the planet moves the United States towards a command economy in which government regulators hold sway over what kinds and amounts of energy will be made available to the private sector. His principal regulatory tool is what’s called carbon-credit trading.

Under a so-called “cap-and-trade” system, government places a ceiling or “cap” on private-sector emissions of CO2 and other “greenhouse gases.” Each sector, industry or business is allocated a fixed quantity of carbon credits that allow it to emit specific quantities of greenhouse gases. As an example, one tradable carbon credit might permit the emission of one ton of CO2. If a business emits more tons of CO2 than its supply of credits allows, it has the option to buy surplus credits from other firms — or it will have to pay a fine in proportion to the amount of the excess emission. By contrast, businesses that emit less than their allocation can sell their excess credits.

This system, which may sound market-friendly, is something only a bureaucrat could dream up. The twist is that the carbon market exists only because the government’s imposition of a cap creates an artificial scarcity in the right to produce energy. In a cap-and-trade system, buyers will purchase their offsets from a broker or through an electronic trading platform. In Europe, carbon trading is already a reality. Since 2005, carbon offsets have been traded electronically on the European Climate Exchange (ECX).

Most carbon cap-and-trade programs also allow regulated entities to earn credits by taking actions that supposedly reduce emissions outside of the firm’s facilities or operations. In one popular version of the carbon-offset concept, firms earn credits by buying seedling trees for planting in less-developed countries. Supporters claim the CO2 intake of the trees will balance out the carbon emissions of the sponsoring firm’s industrial activity. Despite its public relations value, scientists scoff at the notion that it’s possible to plant enough trees to balance out man’s production of CO2. But carbon-offset projects are popular in the environmentalist community.

More Chances to Cheat

However, the most radical environmentalists reject cap-and-trade. They say it allows polluters to continue to pollute by purchasing carbon credits. That is true but irrelevant. A ton of CO2 emitted in Beijing has the same climatologic effect as a ton emitted in New York. The real problem is that every country’s government has an incentive to cheat on behalf of its domestic producers. This has been the European Union’s (EU) experience with the Emissions Trading System (ETS) that the EU established to implement the Kyoto Protocol. In just about every EU country except Britain, the credits allowed exceed the corresponding tons of emissions.

Carbon offsets provide even more opportunities to cheat. For example, some aluminum com

You say Obama is making promises he cant keep but mccain isnt making promises at all?

He says vote for me because he was a POW. He says hes for energy independence but is in bed with oil companies. News flash to you republicans we will never get alternative energy if we continue to drill because alternative energy is competition for the oil companies. Nobody who works for the oil companies would create competition for them. Do you people really think john mccain will bring about energy independence? Do you even care? John mccain stands for nothing he will not fix anything.

You’re right. I can’t believe the hypocrisy of republicans. McCain did not promise ANYTHING.

The Expert answers:

Sighting it near a tsunami zone, or hiring imbeciles, or having a terrible design for your plant are bad ideas.

Richard asks…

Did you read this news item: The Green Bubble is about to Burst?

The temperature trend used by the IPCC (the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) to support their conclusion about anthropogenic global warming (AGW) is likely to turn out to be fake.

By S. Fred Singer at American Thinker

EXCERPTS:
The situation will become clear once Virginia’s attorney general, Kenneth Cuccinelli, obtains information now buried in e-mails at the University of Virginia. Or Hearings on Climategate by the U.S. Congress may uncover the “smoking gun” that demonstrates that the warming trend used by the IPCC does not really exist….

Once the public accepts these scientific conclusions, it should have immense consequences for policy. It will mean that the impact of rising CO2 levels is negligibly small, as has already been concluded by the NIPCC (Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change), a group of scientists skeptical of the U.N.-supported IPCC. It would also mean that wind energy, solar energy, and other “non-carbon” energy sources are not needed and are in fact counterproductive.

One may expect a huge outcry and serious and protracted opposition from those who have built their careers on global warming hype and who have made investments in alternative energy or are looking for immense profits from carbon trading.

The Green Bubble is about to Burst

I read a news about the risks of biofuel energy in yahoo and searched for the subject, wherefore a big list of sources were shown but I could not open most of the sources (saying, ”sorry, your page is not available”). The one I could open read as above!

We know for long that a dichotomy of ideas existed among scientists about the ”global warming” phenomenon. Particularly the UN’s steps to restrain the use of carbon emitting (fossil fuels) energy had raised controversy about the road blocks for industrial progress of developing nations.

In the US however, the taxation policy involved in the use of petro fuel also generated much antagonism to the GW theory! Now what do you feel about the emerging revelation? Conversion of large scale food crop area to biofuel yielding plants is feared in Europe! Some articles claim that the bio fuels would not solve carbon emission rates, but increase it!

What are your thoughts on this news?

The Expert answers:

First compare the volume of these gases that emanate from a volcanic activity to that of the fossil fuels.
The emission from an volcanic activity is huge and in a short period of time, where as from that of the fossil fuels is on a long drawn one.
The nature creates its own balance system by counter measures for overcoming the damage or adjust the environment to that state on a long drawn issue.
But the impact of a quick one, similar to that of a volcano, may be beyond the quick repair by nature.
If we take the environmental effect of all the volcanoes we will find the power of nature.

Take the case of the mexico oil spill. Considering the amount of oil spilled in to the ocean as indicated what should have been the effect, based on what the environmentalists profess, and what is the effect.
I think it is either not substantial as hyped or there is a dirty cover-up.
Nature is not that too fragile for man to manipulate too easily. It will spring back.
Yes – There are a lot of political manipulations, for sure.

George asks…

when, and by how much, will uncle sam tax you for energy you do NOT use?

reading along, trying to get a grip on what legislation will pass the senate (cap & trade bill passed by the house of reps already at the urging of mr. obama, who refuses to consider offshore drilling for oil until our alternate energy is good enough…), i came across a news article about the state of missouri and how its governor is proudly announcing a new cost to consumers of energy in MO which, he claims, will end up costing missouri businesses and citizens less than what they will be charged… huh, you say? me too:

http://www.kansascity.com/news/politics/story/1307200.html

how is it that government gets away with making us pay more now and promises that we will recoup those costs in the future? have you ever had any new tax recouped to you? what was it, a tax credit? what good does a tax CREDIT do for you if you go broker every day?

how about the taxes charged on toll roads? that’s a great example! when toll roads were built, everyone paid a toll to use them, supposedly a temporary tax only until the road was finished. but the crooked politicians NEVER stopped, but they did increase, the amount of the tolls that were paid. the tolls are a TAX.

inflation, especially to those of you without a job, is also a TAX. now the governor of MO says that the new energy-conservation tax must be charged NOW and that it will get “recouped” back to businesses, which are going to have to lay more workers off because of the increase that they will pay to the utility companies. when the workers are laid off, how will the utility bills at home be paid?

politicians in DC are getting quite excited learning about the governor of missouri’s ideas to help utility company contain costs, but when our president took the oath, he told us that we’d have to wait 8 months to learn if offshore drilling for oil would be allowed, since, he said, he wants rigs (which take about 2 years each to build) to be powered entirely by alternate forms of energy themselves! i have not heard a peep out of obama lately or within the 8 weeks after he gained the office of president, about offshore oil drilling. huh! the chinese are drilling for it off of cuba, which is actually part of our own eastern continental shelf. oh, yeah, but they are communists (as though that makes any difference)…???

democrats in the house, who control the house, say that cap & trade will only cost the consumer about $100 a year, but republicans say that it will cost (initially) somewhere around $770 per year and more than that, since alternative energy forms and “green industry” is certainly NOT in place now. we really have a long way to go on that. so who cares if the united states becomes the *shining example* of countries that are ahead of the game of conventional energy consumption?

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/26/house-passes-milestone-energy-climate-change/

i say, who cares, since if these increased costs (taxes) are going to put you out of a job, how will the federal government pay for more research and implementation of this foreseen, but not yet concrete, plan to run entirely on the new green energy? if you are out of a job, you will not pay income taxes, will you? and won’t you cut back on what you spend in the general marketplace? so, it is another domino effect, just like when the housing bubble broke. do you realize how many small companies have gone under after that? in chicago, i see more and more and more small businesses closing their doors, leaving their storefronts vacant. it is happening here ALL OVER our city of about 2.5 million people! and, it is happening ALL OVER all of the big cities and everywhere in our country, isn’t it?

so, do you think that we will have no federal taxation to offset research and development, as well as implementation of perfected green energy machines? how so?

what will you tell your senator? what will you do to prevent the house of reps and your state’s politicians from pulling the wool out from under you?

The Expert answers:

So long as voters continue to be mindless suckers, none of it will stop. Politicians promise anything you want to hear so you will cooperate with them. They are frauds, embezzlers, and extortionists. If I ever get an army together most will be prosecuted for that.

They sucker us to pay taxes for things like roads, then they steal that money and use it for what they want. Tolls on bridges here were up to two dollars and the tolls were about to drop to around fifty cents since the bridges were almost paid off. The racketeer politicians held an election, among people who don’t use the bridge, for buying fleets of ferries. Then the tolls were raised, not lowered, to pay for that and for nearly empty buses running across the bridges. The toll is now four dollars.

We need to wake up the mindless voters and drag the racketeers out of their offices.

Helen asks…

How excited are you that Heinz invented a new ketchup packet?

I don’t know why they have been wasting time on alternative energy and stuff like that while we were stuck with those crappy old ketchup packets. I am glad they got their priorities straight and I can die happy now

Joseph asks…

What is Canada’s role in sustainable development projects?

I need to study for my Biology test (grade 12) and I can’t seem to find this information anywhere.
If someone could give me a link or something helpful, that would be great.
Thank you!

The Expert answers:

You would have to be more specific, sustainable development of what? In an energy sense, Canada pursues many alternative energy techniques (for example wind farms and solar energy). The best way would probably be to talk about government incentives on sustainable projects. You would have to research them, but the Canadian government provides subsidies and tax breaks on sustainable powered homes, cars, business, etc.

Hope this helps.

Helen asks…

What is an example of a country with sustainable development?

Please help. And please give an explanation of why.

Sources are asked for, but I don’t really care if you have them.

The Expert answers:

Every country has some and actually alot of problems even america, high debt. Canada has a really volatile economy it is over dependent on natural resouces. China is over dependent upon america for jobs.

The best country economically is ameria though. No country has sustainable development. See you don’t know if your economy is sustainable until it is proven unsustainable. A sustainable economy means forever so to prove an economy sustainable you would have to be able to see into the future. For example, 5 years ago iceland might look like a sustainbl economy but now it is bursting into riots never seen before. One might the USSR and soviet union communism wa a sustaible system, that is until it collapsed in the 1989. So no system can be proven unsustainable until it collapses.

Thats what I’d say, you don’t have to agree with a question, you can disagree and provide evidence that no country has ever proven to have a sustainble development system because they all have collapsed historically. They are created by man after all and therefore are flawed because man is not perfect.

Charles asks…

It’s ok to wear leather if I’m raw vegan?

Eco friendly shoes and clothing are sometimes much more expensive and I think the leather can be used since in the end it is of no use, all wasted.

Agree or disagree and why?

Thank you!

The Expert answers:

Vegans do not purchase animal products. It’s as simple as that.
People differ as to the appropriateness of wearing leather purchased before becoming vegan, and on the ethics of buying secondhand leather goods.

Buying leather items would make you a raw foodist, rather than a raw vegan.

George asks…

I’m looking for eco-friendly events;?

ones that are similar to Earth Hour, One Day Without Shoes, etc.. where they have dates in which you take action around your community. Earth Hour was March 27, 2010 and One Day Without Shoes is April 8th.

Any events like this would be helpful, as I have to make a promotion poster for a Digital Image and Design class.

TIA!

The Expert answers:

Earth Day is huge and comes up on 4/21

Taos Solar Music Festival – 6/26 and 27 2010 http://www.solarmusicfest.com/

You might want to look locally too – sometimes there are eco friendly events that happen in your own city or town that might be more personal.
