Your Questions About Green Living

Robert asks…

Why is the Southern Company and Jeff Sessions so against alternative energy?

Maybe because 99% of their energy plants are from COAL,OIL and NATURAL GAS.

Do they have to use coal? No
Whether you live in the south or the southwest alternative energy is still a viable source of energy.
Solar, Wind, Geothermal and other alternative sources are available to The Southern Company.
They are BIG OIL. Thats why they dont want to change.
Americans are not stupid.
CHANGE OR YOU WILL BE FORCED TO.
THATS GOES FOR DEMOCRAT/REPUBLICAN/LIB/CON/JACKASS/WHATEVER YOUR NAME IS.

The Expert answers:

I say outlaw the use of fossil fuels. We have other ways, don’t deny it (I’m talkin to big oil)

BIG OIL is going to soon be… Small… Then gone.

Sharon asks…

Are the big oil companies really spending enough on developing alternative energy?

Go to BP’s alternative energy website and you’ll notice that they plan on spending 8 billion dollars over the next 10 years on alternative energy R&D. This includes solar, wind, hydrogen and natural gas. Given the fact that we’re in a state of complete disarray with the oil situation in our world with many factors contributing to refinery shortages, crude production, etc., you would think that big-oil would be spending a few more dollars on the alternatives. With that said, is BP, et al just giving us all lip service or are they serious about finding a better way. I know that they want their profits to keep rolling in based upon their current business model, but there will come a time when the old way of doing business costs too much (exploration, hurricanes, wars, etc).
Your thoughts on how we can help push them into embracing these technologies and making them viable alternatives for real world applications.

The Expert answers:

The word “enough” is a relative term. NASA gets $16 billion a year; is that enough? I don’t think so, but I bet you think it is too much. They are spending an amount that they deem necessary to ensure future profits for the company. When their oil wells start to run dry, they will spend more.

Joseph asks…

Is the concentration of ownership of energy companies responsible for the lack of alternative energy sources?

Bill Gates recent announcement of developing a new nuclear reactor, Generation IV, with China, that is safer, cleaner and more efficient , using depleted uranium, is interesting in that he is seeking a partner outside of traditional energy corporations.
If the Generation IV reactor as as promised, why is it that none of the traditional energy producers have attempt to update their designs? Could it be that they are wish to maintain the status quo. That the profits they are making presently are so great that there is no motivation to look at new technologies?

The Expert answers:

Convenience is a big part of the slow adoption. Another is the AGW cronieism on the part of people like Al Gore- Investor in carbon trading boards, and carbon trading credits, as well as part owner of Occidental petroleum.

Nuclear is a disaster just waiting to happen, and a form society outgrew just like you outgrew Dr Dentens. And the inescapable fact no plant can ever be made safer than greed will allow.. The people who run them are quite inept at everything but keeping them events out of the news.

Mayak Nuclear Accident in Russia 1957

http://www.lutins.org/nukes.html
http://www.dangerouslaboratories.org/radscout.html
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/fatal-blast-hits-nuclear-waste-plant-2353512.html

Nuclear is no alternative. The same family names crop up with nuclear reactor design/construction firms and the old players in gas and oil- they just know how to manipulate the message so you “think” nuclear is innovative and “new” and an alternative energy- it is nothing of the sort. Just because it may be listed as safe in textbooks- there is just that much money behind the industy.

Just because Toshiba builds reactors small enough to fit on a lowboy trailer does not make it safe nor anything I would want to be around.

Let us face facts- the Candu reactors that held promise in 1980 have been plagued with problems. Yet they were touted as more advanced than anything the US had available.

There have been innovations and moves to improve and develop other safer alternatives to nukes- after all a nuke plant has waste that will outlast the sun and be as deadly then as now.

Just be careful what you wish for- you might just get it along with all of the unintended consequences you never heard about because you trusted a crook in a Brooksbrothers suit The same people who gave you the economic collapse of 2008.

Daniel asks…

Why do we subsidize the alternative energy industry?

The oil industry has been subsidized for decades. It’s a constant political hot button issue. If it’s such a bad thing to do, why is the current administration subsidizing “alternative energycompanies with taxpayer dollars? Will this not just enrich a different group of people, effectively doing the same thing that was done for big oil? So far four alternative energy companies are belly up, likely more to follow, where’s the outcry? If I’m not mistaken part of the “excuses” for those that have failed so far is due to foreign, “cheap labor”.

The Expert answers:

Because they are too expensive to stand up in the open market, because of manufacturing costs and they are unreliable and unpredictable.

Solar electric is about $0.36/KWH to produce electricity, and if batteries are added to have lights at night, solar costs upward ot $0.50/KWH (not including transmission costs)

Wind turbines are about $2.40/KWH (not including transmission costs)

Coal generation is about $0.02/KWH and natural gas is about $0.03/KWH (not including transmission costs)

Corn for methanol needs about 8 units of energy to produce 10 units of energy. Switch grass would only need about 4 or 5 units of energy to produce 10 units of energy, but switch grass can not be taxed or regulated for hidden taxes and revenue to politicians and those that are subsidized by using corn as a source for making methanol.

Wind and solar generation has not been cost effective since they were first tried, and will not be cost effective. They are an option in remote areas where no transmission lines are available. Most remote areas that need moderate amounts of electricity generally use diesel engines to power generators, or natural gas to run gasoline type engines to generate electricity.

Bottom line, subsidies are only for laundering tax dollars and/or to buy votes. I would expect more alternative energy companies will go belly up in the near future.

Electric and hybred vehicles are also not cost effective. Electric vehicles were tried in the early 1900’s and failed for the same reason they failed today and will fail in the future. To get any amount of distance, a large truck or tractor trailer is needed to haul all the batteries needed to get a hundred miles or more distance before needing to recharge, and it would take two or more days to recharge all those batteries, or a charging station way too expensive to be practical.

Conventional generating plants need to be on low efficient standby to power up in a moments notice for when there are random clouds or gusting winds, which actually emits more CO2 than if they were on full power operation, so there is actually more CO2 emitted by using wind and solar than simply using the coal or gas powered plants. This is a dirty little secret few know about. In Scotland, Germany, and other countries, wind farms are being paid to shut down from time to time because they are so sporadic, which punches gaping holes in the whole “Free electricity” theory.

Cheap labor is only a small factor for the US not being as competitive globally. It is the taxes and the regulations that companies have to meet that costs so much and causes the US to not be as competitive globally. The excuse for being cheap labor is a distraction for us to know that the over regulation and compliance to safeguard against the trial lawyers is what costs the most for businesses.

Thomas asks…

What should my major be if I want to help with alternative energy sources?

I want to be involved in alternative fuels/energy sources and help with climate change. I want to work for companies that do major projects in that area, but I’m not sure what major that could be. I’m under the assumption that I’m looking at is a career in Environmental Engineering. Is that my major or is it something else? Also what California schools have good programs in the field I’m looking for?

The Expert answers:

Environmental engineering is something different. It’s more about pollution control and waste management and is a sub-field of civil engineering. If you want to work with alternative fuels, chemical engineering would be a good choice. Materials engineering (solar cells, superconductors), mechanical engineering (wind energy, improving engine efficiency), electrical engineering (smart grid), and nuclear engineering (next-gen fission reactors, fusion) could also be good choices.

Your Questions About Green Living

Michael asks…

What is is the most important environmental issue facing the planet today?

What are you most afraid will happen to the planet that cannot be reversed?
Do you have a healthy environmental conscience?
Do you have faith that mankind will do the right thing and learn to treat the world better before it’s too late?
Will Mother Nature win?

The Expert answers:

There isnt just one, there are many interelated factors the one thing causing the other which has effects that cause something else to give you a picture i must mention all of them and i have included some solutions

these are some Mega threats that endanger the planet and some solutions

over population, erosian, over pumping of carbon aquifiers(deep wells)
desertification, rising seas, land loss, deforrestation.excess carbon emissions, mass extinction of species and global warming.

DEFORRESTATION if it continues ,is that we could end up looking like Mars.Without an atmosphere ,without water, without air, with out life

the forrests make most of the water that we can drink or use for plant growth(sweet water)
some is condensed from the sea but that reaches only the coastel aereas .
The bulk ,comes from the forests ,and the rivers come from the rainfall which comes from the trees ,
and the trees with precipitation, feed the rivers when it is not raining and keep them running all year round.

If we kill all the trees,we kill the rivers .we kill the rain. We kill us.
The trees also absorb the heat in the day and heat up the place in the night ,so they keep the temperature confertable to live in.

In the dessert the nights are freezing cold and during the days you burn up

CARBON MONOXIDE
the trees absorb carbon emisions ,which is poison to us and they produce oxygen which we need to breathe.

So in short the trees produce the air that we need to breathe.
They also produce wood which is usefull and a wide range of food such as fruits

deforestation must be stopped before desertification goes out of control and consumes the planet.

DESERTIFICATION
the sahara is growing by 7 kilometres every day.
Two major desserts in northern china are growing together making one giant dessert and, causing dust storms so making thousands of people refugeese

the trees evaporate a mist which ,which protects us from the strong rays of the sun .

The planet is drying out at an alarming rate.

In the days of the dinasaurs this planet was under an aquiferus manta ,a mist that covered the entire earth ,and there were no desserts .
Count how many there are today, and all of them are as a result of mans actions.
The sahara used to be forrests
arabia ,irak ,iran used to be fertile lands in biblical times
Ghengas Kahn burned all the forrests here and filled the well with water and so turning vast lands into dessert.

Bad agricultural practises is turning vast teritories into desserts ,because of over grazing and the exessive pumping of carbon aquifiers ,the surface aquifiers already having been depleted.
And the use of fertilisers and heavy machinery that compacts the ground which raises the salt in the soil.
Modern agriculture today is doing the same as ghengas kahn but in much bigger territories.

And because agricultural lands are lost, farmers are forced to cultivate highly erodable lands, to keep up with the growing demand for food.an extra 70 million people each year and this is increasing
the world population has doubled in the last 50 years the fasted increase ever since the first homo sapian.

EROSION
soil erosion is almost always as a result of human intervention.
The trees are cut down and these trees existed to provide a cover against the rays of the sun which now dries out the soil ,and the wind can than easily blow away the dust that is formed ,——this is wind erosian

because the trees are no longer there, whose roots bound the soil together ,and because their canapies of foilidge no longer exist the rain now has easy acces to the unprotected ,now dry surface and the rain waters wash away the top soils ,——this is water erosian

farmers plow large plots of land to plant maize or wheat or what ever and as happened in the 20s in the USA,they plowed in straight lines.when the winds came they blew alonfg the straight lines and picking up speed removed millions of tons of top soil(wind erosian) turning vast teritories into dessert deprived of arable soil

today the farmers plow in circles and curves to prevent this building up of speed by the wind,

but still vast sections of land are exposed to the sun which kills the micro biotic life ,that builds the black and rich top soil and tons of water is evaporated by the sun.,

A far better way is a very old concept now newly applied called –no till farming.

After the inicial shaping of the land the tractor is no longer used .or another type of plow head is used which does not break and turn the soil over, but merely makes a deep cut in to which the new plants are planted or sown.
Or the seeds are just stuck in an unbroken surface ,which is covered——- by mulch

mulch is a layer of organic material which prevents the soil from drying out by blocking the sun and maintaining its moisture

because the soil is now soft and moist the earthworms devellop and there is no better manure on this earth than that from earth worms, who also airate the soil with their bodely movements sucking in the air .

The mulch also is a cover which protect the soil from the impact of heavy rains which brings the salt to the surface which makes the soil poorer.

The mulch also is the food and conditions for a vast variety of micro biotic life that produces top soil

MUD SLIDES
in Mexico in the mountains the increasing
populations of indigenous peoples are cutting down trees to plant corn ,this land is productive for a few years before it becomes poor and useless for farming.
The roots of the trees that have been cut down rot and tunnels are created with their diaaperance ,with heavy rains these tunnels fill up with water and the soil lifts and moves down wards .

Mudslides are caused and large parts of the mountains are exposed to the rock.

The mud destroys the lands beneath and the exposed areas NEVER recover leaving the area with out vegetation forever

to recover eroded soil is a lenthy process ,which involves planting, bushes ,grasses and trees under difficult conditions to hold the soil and to create bariers to stop further movements on the surface and trap any organic matter that ends up there.we can help by adding mulch(chopped organic matter and plant leafy plants to be chopped down for this purpose,.

There are various plants that are exelent for this pupose, like a bean called nescafee which is a monster in normal circumstanses ,it covers an enormous aera ,grows very fast creates tons of leaves ,when fully grown it dies leaving a thick cover of rotting organic material behind.

WATERSHORTAGE,OVERPOPULATION
each year 70 million more people are consuming water but this is ,but a small part of what agriculture uses.

So our consumption of water is ever increasing and our drinkable water supply is shrinking because of polution ,and the production of potable water is less all the time because of deforestation.

In Tasmania one can already exchange one litre of water for 2 litres of petrol.
It is predicted that the wars of the future will be for water.
The water we got in most populated places must be treated or purified before it is acceptable for human consumption.

In Portugal and soutern Spain ,as in many places, wine is cheaper than water.Which would explain the many drunk people there

we are living in a bubble economy and when the bubble bursts
food prices will sky rocket, and so will the price of water.

The wars of the future will be for water

GLOBAL WARMING

because of the green house effect and the desertification this planet is heating up
Each degree rise in temperature signifies 10% crop loss

RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
This does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.

Green land and the south pole ,which apperantly has a hole in the ozone the size of the usa,are another matter.
This is ice above the sea ,on the land, and melted water will return to the sea .and so duely affect sea levels.the sea has been rising for a long time.
In portugal remains of Roman villas have been discovered 3/4 of a mile in the sea,and in one town the locals say that the sea is eating their town ,in recent years the Dona Philipa golf cours has lost the 16th and 17th hole which have fallen of the cliffs unto the beach.

In California and Florida rising seas have flooded arable land that has been lost
so far only a few millions acres in total globaly ,but this will speed up with the increasing global warming.
And in Antartica arms of ice that even had names because the were so permanent have broken of into the sea.

And we are witness to the first mass extinction of animals since the days of the dinosaurs species being lost by the hour ,to put it conservatively

SOLUTIONS
Global efforts to cut down on carbon emisions, reforestation to capture carbon, sustainable farming practises and ecomomic systems of irrigation, education on family planning to counter overpopulation, water harvesting to fill up subteranian water supplies, environmentally friendly energy systems, efficient public trans port to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine, global distribution of food supplies.encouraging people(to return to the land) to be autosufficient (with the internet business is not any more confined to the cities),urban planning to include vegetation, stop building more high ways,

agricultural devellopment programs for 3rd world countries.

If every one in the world, who could, would plant a garden ,this would take the stress of the farmers, add to the bio-mass and so the humidity and put a lot more food into circulation.

So what you can do is plant a tree, clean up rubbish, leave bins for people to put their rubbish in,leave notice boards explaining that you cleaned and ask people to co-operate,

and dont put your own organic rubbish together with the rest, seperate and classify your rubbish,70 %of contamination is because of organic material and this is the easiest to take care of ,you make a small compost heap in a shady place in the garden and all the organic waste of the house can go here ,at times cover it with leaves or sand.
The rich compost which results you put back on your plants.
This does not smell or create bugs, the decomposition kill about every thing.

If you can have a couple of bantum chickens which eat 70%of garden pests and they do not rake the ground and kill the plants as ordinairy chickens do. Source(s) my humble confused beginning of a space

William asks…

What is the most serious environmental problem faced today?

What do you base your opinion on and should we be more concerned about local or global environmental issues?

The Expert answers:

Depends on where you live. I think most are regional and not global, although some are common to many regions.

For example, in China, air pollution is one of if not the most serious of env. Problems.

Other parts of the world, the answer might be water quality.

Others, might be deforestation and the concomitant impacts – e.g. On water quality from increased erosion, more surface heating from increased insolation. This leads to increases in BOD and lowers dissolved oxygen for aquatic life.

Two major global problems are: Ozone depletion &
Global climate change – especially so since these problems require multi-lateral agreements to address and enforce mitigative measures.

Donald asks…

What are 6 natinal issues going on today that are easy to advocate for or against?

I need 6 national issues (such as abortion, environmental issues) that will be easy to express my opinion. This is for a school project and each group member represents one of the following groups with respect to this topic: a congressmen or congresswomen from each major political party, non-profit activists, and money-backed lobbyists from large organizations.

The Expert answers:

My top six would be:

1) abortion

2) same sex marriage

3) prayer in school

4) amendment to make it illegal to burn the American flag

5) gun control

5) off shore oil drilling

Thomas asks…

Where can I find info about our Federal Gov’t’s policies on environmental issues and policies?

Also, what is going on today concerning the federal governments policies on environmental issues? What are the current hot issues?

Thank you for your help.

The Expert answers:

From there you can look at department of interior, Departmrmt of agriculture, Department of Energy, Bureau of Land Management, EPA, etc.

Each will have their hot topics, and do not forget Congress, you can see what is on the docket and status of bills, etc. Many times legislation dealing with issues and land use go through congress. Many times when the EPA tries to do things administratively, it is because congress will intercede and reign them in.

Do you support socialism and will Hillary steal your money?

“I want to take those profits. And I want to put them into a strategic energy fund that will begin to fund alternative smart energy, alternatives and technologies that will actually begin to move us in the direction of independence.”

While I agree with energy independence, Isn’t that socialism?
I hope you don’t have a 401k with energy stocks.
profits must be equitably adjusted

OK socialist.

The Expert answers:

No, I don’t. And, yes I do. She will shred paperwork so we won’t be able to prove either. I think we should ban her from using or owning paper shredders.

Sharon asks…

What to get my dad for Christmas?

He’s into finance (especially stocks), religion (Christianity), vegetable gardening, alternative energy, gun collecting, reading, and electronics. In the past I’ve given him books and ties that just end up at the back of his closet. I’m looking for something he’ll use and enjoy.

The Expert answers:

Susan asks…

What is the best way to invest $100,000 to $120,000 in the stock market?

I’m thinking about purchasing half in alternative energy related stocks, maybe $10k each (if I can find 5 or 6 good ones) and half in a personal opinion stock that is about to split 3:1 and is the only company in it’s field.
I did not ask about mutual funds. I have SEP, Roth, and a Rollover IRA. This question is ONLY about the stock mkt. This is extra money I can afford to lose but, of course, would rather not!
Sorry, I realize mutual funds are also “the stock market” but I’m max-ed out on my SEP (raised my salary to take full advantage) and my Roth. I am ONLY talking about individual stocks.
Also, when I say alternative energy related stocks, I am referring to Bio-Diesel, Photo-Voltaic Cells, Wind power, etc. I’m not talking about one segment.
I’ll also re-iterate about the one personal choice. I’m exaggerating when I say it’s the only company in it’s field. There is one other that is insignificant. 3:1 stock split happening Thursday. It is recession-proof.
One other thing – I’m not interested in “Day-Trading”. I’m only looking at long-term investments.

The Expert answers:

Putting half of your basket into one sector is a pretty bad idea. Ususally industry stocks all go up and down at the same time. Bad news from one company, will drag down half of your portfolio. You should have AT ABSOLUTE MOST no more than 2 stocks in any one industry…however one is better!

Paul asks…

What are the best stock to invest in for 2011?

Its 2011 and i was wondering what are the best stocks to invest into. I was told to invest energy alternative ones and foreign ones but i do not know which ones because im new to this. Can anybody help me with this or give me tips so i can do good because i know its a high risk with stocks

The Expert answers:

Here some good stocks IMO from the energy sector like you said you were intrested, particulary alternative energy, namigly wind.

Mas Tec, Inc. (MTZ)
Owens Corning (OC) – many people only consider this co. To be a home builder but they are very much involved in glass composites that make up the wind dial
Illinois Tool Works (ITW)
Eaton (ETN)

Daniel asks…

good virtual stocks to invest in the next 6-9 months, $100K starting budget?

this is a virtual stock game competition at my school and the time duration to sell would be in the next 6-9 months, the problem for me is that i cannot change what i buy!, so i can’t just do short-term investment and then sell it when it drops, which is what i want to do…i have to do investments that i keep for at least 6 months, i dont know for sure since i dont know when they actually determine and tell me who’s the winner. So the sell date is in 6 months, or half of a year, in 2010 of course. My idea is of course to diversify as much as possible but also keep penny stocks.

my first would be a major food production company, 2-3 energy companies, including alternative energy. A specific one for oil would be Exxon Mobil. Miscellaneous could be either gold or silver, a “drug” medicine stock, and foreign stocks. I will also take a few percent of the 100,000 and put into penny stock.

Since i get to start with such a high amount i have alot of freedom in what i invest, but i want to be careful though, because even though its not real its for a competition…(nation wide, but the winner is determined by the best performing at a school only)
anyone have any suggestions either specific ones or just general catagories all of them are appreciated!
no you dont have to make me money but if you have any good ideas or suggestions just let me know.

Thanks.

The Expert answers:

A good “story stock” is one whose fortunes will rest on whether their products become popular or not.

I am currently watching a biotech stock called MNKD. It is coming out with a revolutionary way of administering insulin into the body – for diabetes. Instead of the usual ( painful ) injections, they administer it through an inhaler. Cleaner, quicker, no pain, and no needle marks.

If this product is approved by the FDA, it could work out very well for the stock; they have applied for approval, but a decision is not expected to happen before January 2010.

So, you could put some of your virtual funds into this stock, and hope that the product gets approved. The stock is currently at about $9.70 right now. Potentially could go into the 20s or 30s if things go well for them.

But, as I said at the beginning, it is a story stock. If this thing does not pan out, the stock could go back to $5 or worse.

Hope this helps you. Good Luck.

Lisa asks…

What do you think of Sustainable Development? Do you really understand what it is?

It will have a huge impact on your life. I would like to tell you about it but its better if you do the research yourself. Its pretty unbelievable when you think about how the government will control every aspect of our lives.
No, I’m talking about life altering laws that tell you where to live, what you may eat. You will no longer drive and will live in an urban area with many restrictions on your activities. In fact, you will be raising food collectively. I’m talking about major life changes.

The Expert answers:

I’ve read some on it Bek and every time I do I get a migraine. It’s amazing how much energy these busybodies have. Of course the main ones pushing it don’t plan on living under it. Kinda like Moore and Ted Kennedy and ‘universal healthcare’.. No standing in lines for them..that’s for the peasants.

If individuals want to get together and raise food collectively..hey more power to them. It’s the Central Planning by bureaucrats who live under a separate set of rules that I reject. That’s just putting a happy face on something similar to the old Soviet system. To get this SD plan implemented they’d have to trash what’s left of our constitution…..

Oh never mind..now I get it. )

Joseph asks…

What is the best way to have a sustainable development to Sub-saharian Africa?

I am working on a research project to find some facts and figures for the above mentioned question. This could be a big question , but we can have few approach from every angle; such as infrastrucutre, water management, health management, land management, political approach, macro-financial approach, educational approach so on, any tips, ideas, questions which could lead to some further discussion are welcome

The Expert answers:

There is no “best way”, there might be a comprehensive strategy that includes all aspects of development, including societies, political and cultural changes.
Historically, there’s never been any successful development process without a “Big Push”, a massive flow of capital, whether from domestic or regional origin (high saving rates in South Korea for example) or external (the Marshall Plan for Europe for example).

Historically again, free trade has worked only in very specific condition and once countries had built a comparative advantage by protecting certain sectors of their industries.
Moreover, as long as commodities world prices are kept low by subsidies to farmers in the US or in Europe, free trade can’t be a solution at all.
Property rights can be important, but there should also be an agrarian reform if needed, and it shouldn’t be destroying mechanisms that help communities to cope with uncertainty (usually redistribution mechanisms, through mutualisation of risks).

A quite fashionable tool for sub-saharian development is regional complementarities, through regional unions, but the only one working propperly is the one around South Africa, but this could definitely give you some leads for further researches.
Good luck.

Robert asks…

With reference to climate change and sustainable development what is the futuristic house?

What construction materials are likely to be used and in what architectural styles and what would be the issues involved in their winning, productin and use.

The Expert answers:

One of these:

HOUSE # 1:

A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not in a northern or Midwestern “snow belt,” either. It’s in the South.

HOUSE # 2:

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every “green” feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.

HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.

HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as “the Texas White House,” it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

You be the judge…

What is a trend that is making an effort towards sustainable development?

I need one more idea for my paper but for some reason this is a difficult idea to grasp and i really need help.

Thank you

The Expert answers:

I’m not sure if this is what you are looking for, but Greensburg, KS was flattened by a tornado a few years ago. They are rebuilding the town in a green, sustainable manner.

On December 17, 2007, the Greensburg City Council adopted a resolution that all city buildings greater than 4,000 square feet will be certified LEED Platinum, the highest level of certification available from the U.S. Green Building Council.

If I want to create renewable energy technology what would I want to major in in college?

I want to create renewable energy product that are extremely efficient and are affordable to any level of social class, I also want to create more efficient air purifiers to clean up and keep clean our environment. Then I want to produce enough energy to have a energy company to use only renewable energy, and be bigger then even GE.

The Expert answers:

If you can dig up enough unobtanium, you’ll be all set to change the world.

Lisa asks…

How much money was made from renewable energy 2011?

I’m trying to see how much money was made from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

The Expert answers:

Thats a good question. Perhaps not as much was made as was spent developing those sources. Renewable energy has been a prevailing issue due to our energy dependence and the high cost of oil. While the high cost of oil makes huge amounts of money for oil companies and OPEC, we will undoubtedly one day have to resort to the use of alternative and renewable energy to power our vehicles along with other modes of transportation as well as heat our homes and generate electricity for households and businesses. My speculation is that we will continue to use light sweet crude until the wells in the middle east run dry and then develop corn ethanol and become the primary exporter of fuel in the world bwahahahaha

Betty asks…

Are there anybody interested in investing fund to build a renewable energy shop in Yogjakarta, Indonesia?

As an engineer in the energy field, I dedicate my expertise to promote and develop the renewable energy application in Indonesia. Please work together with me to save our earth for a better future.

The Expert answers:

Tell us all some more about your plan, your expertise (Academic and practical), details as to what, why and extent of help you seek.

Then people can look at what they may be able to do to help you.

BTW already have investments within the energy industry including alternate and renewable.

Mary asks…

Donna asks…

I need ideas to make something that can produce renewable energy for science?

What is something that I can make from everyday objects to create something (like a little gadget or something) that can produce some renewable energy? (just energy, has to be like wind, solar water etc. powered) The more energy it creates, the better! Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Wind is the best option . You may devise rotors connected to genset/ dyanamo in any manner/capacity that suits to your design/viability

Helen asks…

I’m doing debate and I need reasons why eco friendly cars aren’t that friendly. can someone help me out?

The Expert answers:

Ethanol and biodiesel. They produce less CO2 per liter as gasoline and diesel. They produce less energy too. So the proper comparison is CO2 per 100 km. CO2 is about the same. The only thing that is eco is that ethanol and biodiesel are renewable. Biodiesel also includes fuel made from used restaurant fats so there is a recycle benefit.

Methanol, used by indy racers is wood alcohol. Methanol engines also produce CO2.

Hydrogen fuel cell and electric battery both require HUGE amounts of electricity. In case you haven’t noticed the ‘green’ places such as California already have HUGE shortages of electricity.

The electricity used to make the hydrogen or charge the battery might be clean as in hydro but is as likely to be dirty as in coal, oil, or nuclear.

Then there is the matter of toxic materials used in battery technology.

The cars we drive today are a lot cleaner and fuel efficient than they used to be.

The main problem with all the alternatives is cost.

Maybe we are looking in the wrong direction. There are a lot of things that can be done to reduce CO2 emissions without radically changing the cars we drive.

-build intersections with traffic circles or interchanges in order to reduce the time spent idling at traffic lights.
-build transit that actually works moving people with minimal difference in time if a car is used. My main beef with transit is that whenever I tried using it it took at least two busses and a half hour or more waiting in between.
-continue building and developing fuel efficient engines that burn fuel cleanly.

Probably the only practical solution to the present energy crisis is to develop synthetic carbon fuels. Essentially figure out how to shorten the hundreds of thousands of years to naturally produce coal and petroleum.

The Expert answers:

How about good use of kids avoiding chores. You know more than half of chore time is relentless avoidance for lack of industrious, noticeable gratification in the lonliest way. We used to kick the can many years ago when children could play in the street all the way to dark. If you are background checkable, why don’t you start employing our little self starters to sub- contractorship, feed your face with pats on the back, and place an inviting welcome back placement on the neighborhood table for good old fashioned, fear- based, acknowledgement of our not so far off in the future generation promise With your confidence, experience, expertise, and enthusiasm, without regard to what their personal right to personal and family privacy rights are concerned. (If you need to protect yours, as an adult, of course, this does not apply). If you could keep it educational, helpful, and safe, I believe our young people’s minds have already been invented, most difficult to beat, and so desiring a way to feel useful, desired and contributing, in an eco-friendly way or not.

Mark asks…

Eco-Friendly, Cheap, Cars?

I’m getting my first car in two years. I know that it’s early, but I want to find a car that ecofriendly, and cheap enough for a car that your parents would buy. It has to be four door (its a rule) and needs to be reliable, because I will have it through college. I also need to be able to fill up pretty much anywhere. Any suggestions?

The Expert answers:

Bicycle, bicycle.

Ford focus.. Year 2000-2004. They are not very expensive.

Steven asks…

how is hybrid electric security cars eco friendly?

The Expert answers:

They use less gas than conventional cars but what i think is more eco-friendlier than a hybrid car is any car as long as it’s a used car because it is very energy and resource intensive to make a new car especially a hybrid car.

Your Questions About Green Living

Jenny asks…

what are the jobs in demand in the renewable energy sector? are they higher or lower qualification jobs?

Is it lower paid jobs like plumbers etc. in demand, or is it researchers, analysts etc., people with degree’s and higher qualifications?

The Expert answers:

Because people are becoming more aware of the planets energy sources, there is an increasing demand for most jobs in this sector. I would say that the highest demanded job in that sector would be researchers. Depending on what type of research it is, it may not necessarily be required to have a high qualification. Also, because there is a higher demad for jobs in this sector you will find that they are probably less fussy as to what qualification the person has (obviously will probably have to some some sort though).

Paul asks…

When is the renewable energy market going to take off? And how? What jobs?

I want to study a degree in renewable energy, and want to know it’ll be worthwhile.

The Expert answers:

I think it’s underway. I’m not “in the know” but it has been a hot topic for a number of years and people only seem to be getting more serious about it.

George asks…

Are there many jobs in renewable energy? And if so, what are the jobs?

The Expert answers:

Renewable Analyst,
Renewable Engineer
Renewable Scientist

Sandy asks…

How big will the ‘renewable energy’ and ‘sustainability’ sector grow, and how many new jobs will there be?

im interested in studying ‘Green Energy Technology BSc’ course and want to know what my job prospects will be like.

The Expert answers:

Generalists in such a field should also get a communications, mass communications or journalsim minor in addition to a minor related to an applicable field because the renewable energy field is dynamic. You have to keep in mind US Department of Labor and Statistics numbers that indicate for each of those “new” jobs created- two conventional jobs are lost- and those people are going to go somewhere. In the past when predictions were made of what sectors would need people, 3 to 5 years down the road those projections failed to materialize because technology changed.

Now, if you get into electrical engineering, with a focus on power distribution power management or power systems you stand a better chance of finding a job after you get out of college, but no guarantees. A Chem E major might be able to make their job or their own comapny when they get out of school.

Unless you have a strong minor in another applicable field, being a generalist with no other supporting minor fields of study can be bit of a handicap. Having a minor in a communications field and or a supporting field will only help your chances. But you also have to stay abreast of what is happening in the world so you can adapt to those changes.

Susan asks…

What decent jobs can you get with a certificate 4 in renewable energy?

Not istalling or maintaining solar systems, but other things?

The Expert answers:

Although it is difficult to predict the future in these uncertain economic times, there are already many green energy related jobs. Here is a short list:
• Solar Lab Technician
• Solar and PV Installer/Roofer
• Solar Fabrication Technician
• Marketer of Solar Technologies
• Financial Analysts
• Solar Operations Engineer
• Solar Appliances Installer
• Architect (designing solar friendly homes)

Thomas asks…

designing a snack for food tech.?

I’ve got to design a healthy snack for part of my food tech course, it has to be low in fat and salt and high in fibre. And has to contain one or more of the following: a scarce food, a GM food, fair trade food, tractor assured, sustainable food or seasonable fruit. Any one got any ideas? thanks

The Expert answers:

How about a fruit salad pot? Make it into a small plastic pot with a tight lid.

Fruit is low in fat, has no salt and is high in fibre. Choose one that is GM to improve its shape or colour (Strawberries?), one that is imported but has fairtrade label on it eg banana(The Co-op sell a lot of Fairtraid products), British apple eg Cox is a good choice as grown in Uk (maybe even local variety if possible) it’s also seasonal.

Hope this helps

Susan asks…

How do Genetically modified foods promote sustainable development? please help!!?

I searched on the internet but I couldn’t find anything.

The Expert answers:

GMO’s themselves, they’ve been around for oh, a few thousand years, and the genetic modifying by breeding plants, has been going on since the turn of the century. The antagonsit of GMO will say, we don’t know the long term effects. Yes, we don’t but being that in the last 100 years the human life span has increased 40-60 years beyond what it was at the turn of the century i don’t think we have to worry too much about GMO’s. Your body ingest thousands of chemicals daily! The stuff you inhale from your car is far worse than what you eat from a potatoe that has fish genes in it, on a molecular level it doesn’t make a difference, and there is no clear science proving gmo’s to be bad, wait i know someone will argue. Studies have shown GMO’s to do this, that etc, but studies have shown the same results from organics and conventional foods. When it comes down to a cellular level, there is virtually no difference in the digestive process. The main other thing about GMO, without it, we could only feed 1/3 of the population!

Joseph asks…

What is a sustainable yearly wage for an average American family?

For basic necessities only (food, shelter, clothing). In your answer please specify the family size.

What type of government can best provide people the tools to meet those needs?

The Expert answers:

For a family of four, with children sharing the bedroom I would say it breaks down as follows:

Food: $600 per month, depending on locale. $7,200.00
Shelter: $500 per month, again with local variances. $6,000.00
Clothing: About $400 per person each year. $1,600.00

This will total $9200.00. Unfortunately this will barely scratch the surface for most families. I have not included utilities, transportation, school expenses, entertainment, church contributions, taxes or other expenses. I would say the minimum sustainable yearly income for most families this size would be nearer $50,000. Nobody can live on basic necessities only unless they are in a nursing home. (And nursing homes aren’t cheap either.)

It should not be the place of government to provide family necessities. Government should defend our shores, deliver the mail and maintain law and order. Historically, families have prospered when they were given the freedom and the means to provide for themselves. For those unable to provide for themselves, churches are commanded to care for widows and orphans and I would extend this to include all who are incapable of maintaining themselves.

William asks…

Why are dog owners happy to allow irresponsible pet owners to abuse pets?

yet not happy to allow unwanted pets be put down humanely & sold to China as a sustainable food source ?
Would they rather see the Chinese kill dogs inhumanely & miss out on a big market for our unwanted pet just because we can not stand it happening to fluffy ?
You may just save pets in China a miserable fate.

The Expert answers:

It’s a twisted cold harsh world. Nobody cares, i guess you could relate it to the Hollocaust, you see they didnt rescue the people straight away did they? So maybe we all gotta wait , but someone has to make a stand :S I hope they stop torturing them animals, cause that right there is cannabilism, my dogs like family to me. Like i said, some people dont have a heart, youre either raised with a conscience or with out one.

Donna asks…

How many acres are needed for sustainable living?

Imagine a group of 15-40 people living together as a group or tribe in the wilderness. Except for some permaculture and animals kept (such as chickens), most of the food comes from hunting and gathering.
How many acres are really needed, as all hunting and gathering will be on the tribe’s own land?
Very thankful for a reply, and please leave a source or other proof of what you’re saying.

The Expert answers:

I would say about .8 acre per person or more. That is how big my lot is and it’s more than enough for my garden and chickens. If I were hunting, especially for a group, I would guess the total area per person should be about 10 acres.

Thomas asks…

Is Shark Fin soup illegal in Britain?

Is Shark Fin Soup illegal in Britain? (& U.S etc) I really hope it is, but I haven’t managed to find out.
The more I discover about this brutal business, it’s also an environmental issue…the more I think we should take sanctions against China.
We should be doing that already what with the Dog meat trade, but one thing at a time…..

The Expert answers:

First of all to “World’s tallest midget”, the reason why it’s considered a brutal business is that the sharks aren’t killed, shark’s meat in China is not worth much so the the fin is removed while the shark is still alive and then the creature is thrown back into the sea.

Imitation shark’s fin soup is made out of mung bean vermicelli shaped to resemble shark fins.

It is not illegal in Britain but should join the long list of products like Frois Gras which should be.

health of the atheletes…..and surely the IOC could ahve taken this into accout when annoucing beijing as the next olympic city host…..please share your views…eevrytime i see it i just think “how horrible, all that pollution” and im not very big on environmental issues, i mean i respect them and do whatever i can, but its not a big thing in my life …..hmmmmm they said on the news that a typical day in Melbourne Australia produces 30 somethings per micrograms of pollution and in beijing it was 600 per microgram, thats massive!!!!!!!!! so bad!! why is it so bad in china??? is the ecconomy??? coz its so huge??

The Expert answers:

**I think it looks terrible and can’t imagine how bad it must be for the health of people who live there. It’s really sad to because on a clear day in Beijing the city actually looks nice but you can’t see it most of the time because of the haze.
There seems to be such a big deal made about climate change etc in Australia but if they look at Beijing they’ve got nothing to worry about.**

Carol asks…

What are you willing to give up to stop Global Warming? Driving, meat, having more then 1 child, how much?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took part in a roundtable discussion on environmental issues, and said afterwards that “one of the participants pointed out that it’s rather odd to talk about climate change and what we must do to stop and prevent the ill effects without talking about population and family planning.

CNN’s Jack Cafferty all but endorsed a global version of China’s oppressive one-child policy on Friday’s Situation Room. He repeated the argument of Canadian journalist Diane Francis, that population control is the only way to fight global warming

FUNNY THING HAPPENED ALONG THE WAY TO DOOMS DAY – 20 years ago I wrote a school paper on how the population bomb predictions of the 1960s had been so wrong and doom never happened then they admitted that their dooms day predictions of starvation and economic ruin for our world were so wrong because “they forgot to add in the work of the new population” These same nuts from the 1960s are running around Copenhagen asking that a “China like” one child global policy be put in to save the world from Global Warming. Same crowd new cause same old messed up thinking.

Are you ready whether you believe or not in Global Warming to give up YOUR FREEDOM to REPRODUCE? Don’t believe me google it.

The Expert answers:

Sir, I must tell you from a 16 year old’s perspective, a perspective that looks at his own future and knows that stuff like what you mention is in it. This is not global warming, it comes down to centralized wealth and propaganda from somewhere up top to put fear into our mind that we are in a crisis. They feed of us because we throw billions of dollars at our fears. I believe no one but myself these days, and when I go outside I see beauty in every living thing, I see change occurring when people least expect it, and I know this world can survive whatever we put it through. I’m not one to believe either global warming or that we are in an economic crisis. I am neither a meteorologist nor a wall street stock investor. I’m a 16 year old adolescent who wants the best for everyone around him, and believes that us falling for the tricks that propaganda brings to us will be the ultimatum purpose of death to wisdom and self reliance as we know it. Not a “hole” in the ozone.

William asks…

Famous political activist Dick Gregory currently on hunger strike for 9/11 truth. Was 9/11 an inside job?

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=20979

It was so painful for me as my wife Lil and I watched the events of September 11, 2001 on television. Seeing a plane hit the World Trade Center (WTC) North Tower at 8:46, then a second plane hit the South Tower at 9:02. Shortly, we saw the firefighters and other first responders courageously going into the buildings hoping to extinguish the fires, but it was impossible to foresee what followed.

Then we watched in shock as nearly a dozen people were jumping from the upper floors to their deaths.

We felt profound horror at 9:59 as the South Tower cascaded in freefall into its own footprint, and then 29 minutes later when the North Tower came down in the same impossible freefall way.

The new forensic evidence which is being released today by Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth demonstrates the presence of controlled demolition materiel in the World Trade Center buildings One and Two.

Just one week after September 11, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Christine Todd Whitman declared “I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington DC that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink” and that we “. . . need not be concerned about environmental issues as [we return to [our] homes and workplaces”.

Yet to this day, at least 900 first responders have since died as a result of the effects of toxic “dust” from the buildings and the some 3,000 human remains that enveloped lower Manhattan and which Mayor Rudolph Giuliani declared “We must clear the rubble”. This “rubble” in fact constituted evidence from a massive crime scene, but was hauled away, first to Long Island, and then was eventually placed on barges and shipped to China.

One thing I know is that the official government story of those events, as well as what took place that day at the Pentagon, is just that, a story. This story is not the truth, but far from it.

I was born on October 12, 1932. I am announcing today that I will be consuming only liquids beginning Sunday until my eightieth birthday in 2012 and until the real truth of what truly happened on that day emerges and is publicly known.
Got this from 1,292 architects and engineers for 9/11 truth – http://www.ae911truth.org/

WTC Building #7, a 47-story high-rise not hit by an airplane, exhibited all the characteristics of classic controlled demolition with explosives:
1. Rapid onset of “collapse”
2. Sounds of explosions at ground floor – a second before the building’s destruction
3. Symmetrical “structural failure” — through the path of greatest resistance — at free-fall acceleration
4. Imploded, collapsing completely, and landed in its own footprint
5. Massive volume of expanding pyroclastic dust clouds
6. Expert corroboration from the top European Controlled Demolition professional
7. Fore-knowledge of “collapse” by media, NYPD, FDNY

In the the aftermath of WTC7’s destruction, strong evidence of demolition using incendary devices was discovered:
8. FEMA finds rapid oxidation and intergranular melting on structural steel samples
9. Several tons of molten metal reported by numerous highly-qualified witnesses

Is it possible to find cleaning products, shampoo, body soap, etc that are both eco friendly and cruelty free?

After becoming vegan it has become important to know how my products are tested and buy only products that are cruelty free. But I have noticed that some cruelty free products are not eco friendly. Is it possible to have both?
After reading Logan’s answer I guess I should have requested that douchebags need not waste his or her time. Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Anything that says “organic” should be good. The brand “Jason” is good. They sell in bulk on Amazon for a cheaper price. For cleaning products, try Seventh Generation. They make cleaning products, paper towels, toilet paper, and other things. You can also try making your own. I do this a lot for cleaning products. Just google what you want to find, like “dish detergent recipe” and make sure the recipe is something you feel you can do and the ingredients won’t harm the environment.

Hope that helps!! 🙂
