buying Macbeth vegan sneakers for boyfriend…good gift to give him?

we’re both 22yrs old. been together a little over two months now.
i just really want to give him a gift (no special occasion), just gifting to show my appreciation towards him.
this will be my 1st gift for him.
the reason why i chose vegan shoes is because we both have sort of hippie-esqe, ecofriendly views on life.
i really wanted to get him blackspot shoes but they are out of stock.

The Expert answers:

Are you serious? How about a FUN gift, like a remote control speedboat?

Looking Mother Nature-y:D Help ASAP!?

Okay, Tomorrow’s Earth Day & I neeeedd some help!
I have a shirt picked out “Earth Day Every Day” (white & Green), Pair of Blue Jeans, Brown Shoes, how should I wear my hair? I want it to look Mother-Nature-y? & How can I make some ecofriendly stuff to wear? Maybe a bracelet er something like that ; out of stuff that’s probably already at my house though…Whoever comes the most ecofriendly to school gets extra credit on a Science Test, & considering I’m failing, I need all the help I could get.
Please? 😀
24 minutes ago – 4 days left to answer.
It doesn’t actually have to BE ecofriendly,
as long as it looks nature-ey(x

The Expert answers:

Hmmm, well you could put some little braids in you hair and take them out so some of it looks crimped, that’s always naturey looking. If you really wanna go all out for that extra credit though you should break out the facepaint and a cape and go as an enviro superhero or something, call yourself the Eco-Warrior or something like that and have your clothes all in earthy colors. That’s if you’re really desperate for the extra credit.

I thought this was also kinda awesome if you wanted to go all out.
I know it’s late now, but you could get a big blue trash bag and wear that and fill it with something (it should be comfy to wear all day though) and then glue or tape green cut out paper for the land. That’d definitely get you the extra credit.

Good luck and have fun! 🙂

Lisa asks…

Are you surprised to learn that the main reason for this worldwide recession is oil?

Thats what was told on the NBC Nightly News tonight.
Decreased oil production and a 75% increase in gas prices was named as the first main reason and the mortgage crisis was the second reason.
So is the Peak Oil theory starting to make more sense now?
Which candidate has the best plan for alternative energy?

The Expert answers:

Not even remotely. We are being held hostage to oil wealth. The oil barrons are actively preventing other technologies from arising, out of concern it will displace them.

We will have to get into a smarter future over their dead bodies… And probably the dead bodies of a lot of innocent bystanders.

Thomas asks…

Repubs, why is Obama’s idea to invest stimulus funds in renewable energy a bad thing?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090116/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_economy

Sounds like a better idea than giving the banks the money (like we did with the 1st half). All they did was hold onto the money and keep it within their OWN circle not into the economy.

Obama’s idea is inline with job creation and alternative energy sources.

So, Obama haters, why is this such a bad idea again?

Thoughts?

The Expert answers:

Don’t expect real, rational reasons, because these guys believe that anything, absolutely anything that Obama suggests must be attacked.
Next they’ll claim the Earth is flat, just because Obama says it’s round.

Helen asks…

How much will it really cost consumers to use more “alternative” “green” “renawable” energy?

I live in Maine, and the govment is squabbling over whether to make renewable energy a larger part of the states portfolio of energy sources. Our “governor” Lepage and his cronies want to protect us against higher costs, the other side insist that it will save us money. Neither side will come out and give numbers supporting the arguement, I havent even seen any fake off the wall numbers in the so called newspapers like the bangor daily news.
I want to know two things, one is how much will this actually cost or save me, and two why dont they report on these things and tell me. If they mandate 10% more wind and it will cost the average consumer 5 bucks a month for the first year, and then save 2 dollars a month for the rest of time, then why dont they tell me that. Or why doesnt lepage come and say that it will cost everyone in maine 100 dollars a kilowatt hour forever. Why dont the papers actually follow up on things like these?
ps. Id also like to know if there is a better category to put this into
ha, ive seen wind turbines out west, and eyesore isnt my opinion of them, the cell phone towers they have on every hill top in maine on the other hand…..
bb., saying things like that is what Im talking about, for one thing the “back up” arguement is only if there is bad planning and a serious problem with lack of capacity, and you still dont give any actual numbers about expense. We stop subsidizing gas prices to the tune of 5-10 bucks a gallon, it would be expensive too.

The Expert answers:

You need to think long-term when it comes to renewable energy. It’s not just about you and other people alive today. Short-term costs are a distraction. Energy and money are two different things, the former being physical and the latter being a man-made construct to compensate for time and labor. People often abstract everything down to money and forget what’s really making life possible.

Look up “Peak Oil” and EROEI to see why fossil fuels can’t be banked on indefinitely. U.S. Oil production peaked in 1970 at 10 mbpd (about half our current consumption rate). That peak included offshore drilling, Alaska, and shale oil. There is no magic savior and alternatives are badly needed.

Having stated that, I’m aware of plans to expand eyesore wind turbines all over Maine’s scenic ridges, which doesn’t seem very “green” in the larger scheme of things. The human population is too large for simple answers to energy questions. Rural areas in Maine and elsewhere seem slated for sacrifice to distant energy needs.

Chris asks…

Does this present administration have on it’s agenda a definite plan for the “Alternate Energy Programs”?

I have followed the daily news reports and ask if we Americans can see the day when we will not have a reliance for consumption of foreign crude oil by implementing a substantial amount of alternative energies.
Presently I am paying for number 2 home oil and unleaded gasoline#$3.60 a gallon. At this rate, I will be broke by the fifth of September. We know a friend who shines for us each and every day, OUR SUN. We can tap into this buddy.
Respectfully Yours,
Panayiotis Kourkoumelis, Sr.

The Expert answers:

No .. They just talking bout doin so however they really have not put forth the foot to do so. They wanna give us the citizens incentives to find new energy sources.$$$$$$$ Im in same boat as you and im wondering when will people try to fix it. Especially after Obama(SOTUA) talks bout cutting the gov’t spending i ask what and how will they find diff energy sources..i feel they r blowing smoke up our assesz so we feel they r doing sum thing bout the problem.. IM for the sun and u hit it on the nose. Good question!

John asks…

drill, kill, or walk?

i knew when this war started it would end up about our oil! so are we gonna walk and change our whole way of life! are we gonna drill our own, or will we just keep fighting, and begging for oil? news flash alternative energy is a long way down the road! will you be the first to put your car on ice? and walk?

What energy source produces the most energy in the USA, and the world?

I’d like to know about man-made, and renewable. in detail please!!!

The Expert answers:

Coal for the US and I suspect for the world also

Mark asks…

Renewable Energy question?

The idea of cold fusion obviously holds a lot of appeal – turning tiny atoms into vast amounts of energy that is clean and almost limitless. If this technology were developed and become suddenly available, it would make the scientists rich beyond their wildest dreams and perhaps throw our energy-based economy into chaos. If cold fusion were developed, who should control it? China is currently the leader in cold-fusion research. If they succeed, would it be fair for them to keep it this technology to themselves or should the technology be dispersed freely throughout the world? What, if anything, would be the downside to this source of power?

The Expert answers:

If cold fusion were developed, who should control it? Those that developed it and patented it.
If they succeed, would it be fair for them to keep it this technology to themselves or should the technology be dispersed freely throughout the world. Why would anyone give away anything that valuable? I sure would not.
What, if anything, would be the downside to this source of power?1. Extreme high cost to build such plants. 2. Safety Issues. 3. Disposal of waste issues.

Mary asks…

Do you think that the more the world uses green energy the better off we’ll be?

In the immediate, short, medium, long and very long terms? Because then price spikes, fluctuations and increases in other energy production methods will be insulated against, right? Plus once the green energy industry takes off prices will come down more and more while we know many other forms of energy production will get more and more expensive especially those forms that are not renewable or have expensive waste storage, pollution or emission problems.

The Expert answers:

Yes

Ruth asks…

Why is the claim that “energy independence” is an ideal never challenged?

The whole idea of “energy independence” is nothing more than protectionism, that old view of the economy that was discredited by Adam Smith back in 1776. Protectionism certainly benefits inefficient domestic producers (in this case, the producers of uneconomic forms of energy) at the expense of more efficient foreign producers (in this case, foreign oil producers) and the consumers (who have to pay higher prices for inferior products). These inefficient forms of “renewableenergy were used prior to the 20th century, but lost on the free market to petroleum.

Businesses that produce efficient products never resort to lobbying Congress for protectionist legislation, because they would win either way and because protectionist legislation leads to retaliatory legislation abroad. In fact, protectionism has a long history of fomenting wars. It is no coincidence that prior to both World War I and World War II, waves of protectionism broke out around the world. In the US, Herbert Hoover’s Smoot-Hawley tariff was a large part of the reason why the Great Depression became the Great Depression.

Were we ever to achieve “energy independence,” the likely result would be a weakening of our national security. The people of the Islamic world already hate our country because of our role in creating and propping up the Israeli government over the years. They already hate us for overthrowing their governments and for stationing troops in their region. The fact that we trade with a few Islamic nations is the one thing keeping these nations from turning into state sponsors of terrorism against our country. We trade with the nation of Saudi Arabia, which has prevented the government of Saudi Arabia from being captured by al-Qaeda like many other Middle Eastern governments.

No nation can isolate itself economically from the rest of the world and expect to prosper. Just look at Cuba, North Korea, and the Gaza Strip. It is long past time for politicians to stop trying to isolate us from the global energy market.

The Expert answers:

The whole idea of energy independence is one that big business corporations have been against since the 70s. The truth is that the foreign oil producers are cooperative partners with American oil companies and they have been for many decades now. In the 70s there was an energy revolution emerging from the jump in oil prices and while steps were taken by our government to invest in infrastructure projects, our beloved oil industry was able to halt the funding of these projects just long enough while their Arabian Oil counterparts lowered the price of oil, calming many angry Americans. You have to understand that American Oil Corporations do not have our national interests and you would be a fool to think that they did. A Corporation serves one purpose, and that is to profit for its shareholders. Chevron, BP, Shell, etc are not government entities buddy. We live in America and the last time I checked we live in the land of the free, we cannot look to the government to provide us with cheaper prices because we’re not happy with the rising costs of oil. If that was the case then this would not be the Great United States of America. The oil companies are not the enemy, foreign governments are not the enemy, there are no terrorists and there are no countries, the only threat to the average American is his own ignorance. Americans are falling behind when it comes to intellect.

Laura asks…

Riddl me this, Riddle Me that? What is the most abundant convertable energy in the Cosmos and on Earth?

Check this out. The most abundant source of energy is all the photons from the Sun and all the stars in the known Galaxy. I quote this info from Mark Goldes, who has researched and proven that we can extract photonic power from the space time fabric. Photons are evenly spread through out all space. Plus you can generate 20 times the power than solar 24/7. Look below… Magnetic Power Inc’s mission is to supply the world with clean, abundant, and inexpensive electricity.
The company is developing technology it calls Magnetic Power ModulesTM. Based upon proprietary breakthrough discoveries in MPI’s labs, Magnetic Power Modules are being designed that operate continuously, without fuel, extracting electricity by converting an abundant, renewable energy source that exists everywhere in the universe. The process will create no pollution. The cost of electricity is estimated to be significantly less than any competing form of power generation today or in the foreseeable future.

Healthy sustainable foods?

I’m trying to eat healthier recently and I have noticed when I eat fruit it doesn’t fill me up leaving me still hungry. So does anyone have any suggestions on what foods are healthy but still fill you up so you dont want to eat any other unhealthy foods that do. Thanks.

The Expert answers:

Grilled chicken, shrimp, eggs, vegetables. Drinking lots of water will also keep you full

John asks…

how do you make a forever sustainable environment?

i have an environment project, we have to get a living organism(excludes snakes, insects and spiders) and have to create a environment for it to live in. where the environment will forever provide food for it.if non aquatic water may be added.
so for example
if i had a frog i could fill the bottom of a tank with water and have the environment built around. for food supply have a separate tank with flies that are continuously reproducing that can fly into the other tank for the frog to eat

The Expert answers:

For one thing, make sure its population doesn’t exceed the carrying capacity of its environment. Elbow room is a big deal.

People are currently trying to violate that rule on this finite planet, but don’t like to admit it.

Donald asks…

Do college students need a sustainable bank account?

I am an incoming freshman and I am wondering if I need a lot of money in my bank account to be “well off” in college.

My parents are paying tuition, food, and clothes…

I have about $200 bucks to my name and I am wondering if I need a bank account around $2,000 to have enough spending money in college.

I just want to know if you think I am okay as far as spending money goes…

The Expert answers:

“well off” is kind of a relative thing. It depends on what’s important to you. FOr example, I partied a lot in college, but a lot of my friends didn’t. For me to be well off I needed about $50 a weekend for covers, drinks, clothes and cab fare. For my friends, they didn’t need as much because they spent more time studying. So every summer I worked and saved up $3-4,000 and I spent a lot of that at school. (But my parents didn’t pay for my clothes. My senior year I had a car, so I had to get a part time job, also. (If I hadn’t needed the car for interviewing I would have skipped it–working cut into my party time and study time a lot.)

One of the most important reasons for a bank account is kind of a backboard in case you run into unexpected expenses. Your parents are serving that function for you right now.

So if your parents are paying for tuition food and clothes and you don’t have a car, you really don’t have much to spend money on. I bet if they are paying all that for you they probably also give you some cash from time to time. So I would think that your $200 plus gifts from them would keep you in important stuff like CDs/MP3s, an occasional date or sports game, plus a beer or two once in awhile (but not every weekend). If you’re careful you can be pretty well off on just what you already have. If you run across an unexpected expense, like for a class or something, your parents will probably just give you the money.

If you’re planning to party a lot, or join a frat (from what I’ve heard frats and sors are kinda expensive ’cause of all the activities they do) or order delivery pizza or own a car or you just want to have pocket money to spend then you’re going to need lots more money. Maybe it would be a good idea to get a job in that case.

Paul asks…

Is Drinking Coffee a Sustainable Food Source?

The Expert answers:

Yes. Anything edible is a sustainable food source. The question becomes what are the requirements and costs to continue using it. No, coffee provides no nutrition. But that is not your question is it?

Charles asks…

A sustainable future in relation to food?

Discuss values and associated behaviours in relation to a sustainable future, in relation to sustainable food.

That is the question I am being asked to write an essay on? I am really unsure about what I can include and anything would help!

So this is what is required of me: Has written or spoken on each value, explaining how that value supports a sustainable future, and provides in depth examples from the readings and interviews of the behaviours that arise as a consequence of one value and thenon how a value supports a sustainable future, with detailed examples from the readings and interview of the behaviours that arise as a consequence. The discussion includes justifying decisions, making judgements, stating opinions, considering implications, projecting future impacts, evaluating options, comparing and contrasting, analysing or suggesting alternatives, where appropriate.

Any links or your own thoughts would be very useful!

The Expert answers:

Well the first thing that needs to be done for a sustainable future in food is to stop using food and farm land to make fuel when there is plenty of oil in the world to use.

1870’s environmental issues that dangered animals?

Hey so okay I have to do an 8 to 10 page research paper in us history 2. My topic I chose was envirnomental issues that dangered animals. I could also add in some info about endagered animals and that stuff. It has to be between the 1870’s and 1970’s. I’m having trouble finding information. If anyone could help me with this like give me websites or information that would be great. Thanks, Anna 🙂

The Expert answers:

Hints:
1. Scientific forestry and plantation system of the Britishers led to devastation of forests, depriving animals of their habitat.
2.Britishers and Indian kings were very fond of hunting or ‘shikar’. There are photos of British officials and Maharajaha Ranjit Singh with rows of 10 to 20 dead tigers.
3. Forests were highly exploited for spreading rail tracks across India so that the Britishers could transport goods and deploy their soldiers.
4.There was lack of awareness among people. All wilderness was thought of as being useless.People used to kill dangerous looking animals on first sight.
5. Britishers saw no benefit in conservation of animals but in the killing of them. Animal parts like tiger skins were thought to represent royal blood.

Chris asks…

What goes(matches) with each word?

My government teacher gave us 4 words
Libertarian, Authoritarian, Socialism & Communism, and Capitalism….and then gave us 6 issues: Marijuana Legalization, Gun Control, Environmental Protection, Minimum Wages, Health Care, and Gay Marriage….these words can be used in any of the 4 first words…Anyone wants to help the class??

The Expert answers:

Oh, these are related. You would have to understand each and every word and know it’s definition.

We’ll start out with

Libertarian: Libertarians believe in as little government intervention as possible. They choose to rely on the free market.

Authoritarian: It’s the exact opposite to a libertarian – against individual freedom.

Socialism & communism: Communism: Money is split evenly among the people.
Socialist: Public ownership of resources.

Capitalism: Capitalism is the private ownership of the means of production.

Details:
– you own yourself
– you have a right to the fruits of your labour, your property
– you have a right to choose enter into voluntary relations with others; and to choose not to associate with them
– you have a right to be free to do what you want, so long as you are not initiating aggression against the person or property of someone else.

And for the 6 issues:

Marijuana Legalization: There are people who believe Marijuana isn’t a drug (It is a drug, mainly because of the THC it contains) those people fight for it, to make it legal.

Gun control: The government allows you to have a gun legally on a few certain conditions. (However, some people are against this)

Environmental protection: To protect our environment. We want to keep our nature clean by picking up garbage, minimizing pollution, sort or garbage and recycle it.

Minimum wages: You boss pays you the least he can by signing a contract or by law.

Health care: Hospitals, doctors, dentists etc.

Gay marriage: Some people who strive to make gay marriage legal.

I think that it should be like this:

Libertarian > Gay marriage
Authoritarian > Gun control
Socialism & communism > Health care > Environmental protection
Capitalism > Minimum wages > Marijuana Legalization

Good luck!

Eco-Friendly and “Green”Cars”?

How Efficient are the Ecofriendly and Green cars? Are they worth the money?
I am asking because if they are so friendly, the prices are not so friendly.

The Expert answers:

I don’t really think they are all that. I read that 60% of the energy used by a car in its entire lifetime is during the manufacturing process which means no matter how “green” the fuel is, it still uses almost as much energy as a regular car. My idea of a green car is one that is designed to last forever….where are those cars?

Sandy asks…

Did the dems drive in a eco friendly car to the town hall meetings from D.C.?

since driving a eco friendly car would be better for the enviroment than flying a gas guzzler like a jet oh didn’t they complain about GM ex flying in jet planes?

The Expert answers:

I walked to mine. And I participated as a citizen, not as a brown shirt.

John asks…

What is the best materials to use for an eco-friendly car?

The Expert answers:

Wood in some form, I’d imagine. Probably through using some form of fiberboard, mdf, or something similar.

Standard steel is also good, actually, as is aluminium – both are fairly simple to recycle.

Nancy asks…

Lawn damage from cars driving in area. Need an eco friendly product to make grass grow.?

You only need 3 things to make grass grow

1. WATER
2. WATER
3.WATER

Mandy asks…

Are you going to buy a eco friendly car?

Or do believe in global warming?

Global warming is something happening even as i type here not something you try to believe in, in fact the movie ‘the day after tomorrow’ was given an award for reminding us how much we are poluting and destroying the planet.

Unconstitutional use of alternative energy patents?

Many oil companies hold patents to technology which would lead to alternative energy, and refuse to sell the rights to or use or develop this technology because it would cut into their oil profits. In addition they are hoarding it up for when the oil is gone, or when we finally wise up and ban its use in everyday civilian transportation. Is this unconstitutional?

I believe there are a lot of people who would like to do something to help the envoironment and make a positive contribution, but they don’t know how they could afford to make a real tangible contribution. They are just struggling along financially themselves. Suppose you could join an “Ecological-Network” and have an opportunity to simply talk about viable alternatives in energy systems and lifestyle and make money when the people you talk to also join the Eco-Network? There are no minimum purchases, no inventory, no recurring monthly purchases, no financial obligations of any kind (I hate that kind of stuff). It would be simple….you join by purchasing a “T” shirt or ball cap, coffee mug, or bumperstickers (your choice). They all say something like…”I drive on Nuclear Fusion (Sun Power) Ask me how”. or, “There are homes that use no fossil fuel for heating or cooling, ask me about it.” When someone you spoke to joins, you get a referral fee. If they enroll someone, they get a referral fee and so do you, etc. through five levels of referrals. The “T” shirts, coffee mugs, ball caps, bumper stickers are all about alternative zero energy homes and electric cars and solar panels. There are companies who offer these alternatives to the public. The “plot” is to make these alternatives known to more people. When someone who joined the Eco-Network found someone who bought from one of the companies, that person and all his referres above him would get a “finder’s fee” based on the value of the sale. You help connect people who are in a position to make a tangible difference in their purchases with an alternative product company. Does that sound like a concept that you think people would be interested in supporting? I just want some input on the “idea” the “Eco-Network” does not exist at this time. www.isomax-az.com has a start on this idea, but there are no “T” shirts, etc. available yet…it’s just an idea…What do you think of the idea?

The Expert answers:

Not too sure about the fees. Perhaps a concept based on grass roots would be a better network.
Those who can afford to maintain their currant life styles, despite the economy will. Those who can not, will make cuts in their life styles. It is those in between, who are wise enough to know that actual and factual, independence from electric company monopolies, fuel demands and rising costs, plus the economy in the gutter, that you would have the best luck to reach.
I would do it. I did it for a county agency, cleaning up other people’s messes. And promoting a greener life style to children through their schools, scouts and churches.
Maybe, a straight purchase or a donation could be done instead of a finder’s fee. Instead of things that will end up in a land fill, maybe something like the bags they sell at local stores for your groceries, or recycling bags…

Susan asks…

Should we invest in renewable energy and alternative fuels?

Lawmakers only focus on these high gas prices. I think they should look into investing funds into renewable energy and alternative fuels.

This is the only way we can successfully become energy independent. And these fossil burning fuels are ruining the environment.

For example they could put _______ billion dollars into automobile companies so they could lower the cost of hybrid cars, and _____ billion in the production of these vehicles.

The Expert answers:

Yes, we need to make a significant investment in alternatives to fossil fuels.

Your Questions About Green Living

Daniel asks…

Solar panels as an investment and saving – sounds too good to be true!…?

(Firstly I apologise for the length of this, but I wanted to explain the whole situation just so there’s no ambiguity).

Here in Brisbane, Australia we get 7-8 sun hours per day on average (source: http://www.livingin-australia.com/sunshine-hours-australia/ ); our household uses ~20kWh per day based on the average of all the power bills for 2009. Using this calculator ( http://www.bdbatteries.com/panelcalculator.php … too lazy to crunch the numbers myself) it tells me the ideal system is 3.2 kW. Our house has a large north-facing roof so that is good enough for solar panels. For practicality (and to keep the numbers conservative) I sourced the figures for a 3.5kW system which is within the price range of $30-40k, but after selling RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates) and taking advantage of federal and state subsidies and offsets it is priced at ~$15-20k; I’ll assume a worst case (say, $25k) to keep it conservative.

With a Home Equity Line of Credit Loan we currently have $220,000 in debt overall. At ~6.5% interest the monthly repayments are ~$1,190. If we were to throw the $25,000 for the entire solar setup onto the loan, the loan would increase to $245,000 and interest would be ~$1,330 per month, a $140 increase. Since we are currently paying $126 per month ($4.20 per day) in power bills, it seems it is not worth it. However, 3.5kW x 7.5 avg sun hours gives 26.25kWh daily, or ~6.25kWh more than is needed. When taking into account the 44c/kWh feed-in tariff that is a lowest possible return of ~$82.50 per month (I say “lowest” because it is real-time net metering, so if we have nothing running during the day it will send a lot of power priced at 44c/kWh to the grid; when we buy it back when we are back from work at night it will cost only 16c/kWh, so overall we will gain more than $82.50 per month).

So then if we had to pay $140 extra per month on the loan but that eliminates $126 per month in power costs and includes $82.50 at the minimum in feed-in credits, is that is effectively a saving of $68.50? I know it isn’t really a saving per se since simply paying loan interest doesn’t reduce the loan’s size, but to me it seems to be a saving since the power cost of $126 per month will always be there so it may as well be moved from one account (elec) to another (HELOC loan) without making much difference financially; also the HELOC loan can be paid off and thus interest repayments become lower, while the cost of electricity is only set to rise (on top of inflation-adjustment each year, we are expecting sharp rise when the carbon trading scheme gets passed, and the generators were granted a 16% increase for January 2010 anyway!!!). Additionally when the 3 kids have moved out of home the power use will drop, leaving more electricity for the grid (so more money returns) in addition to less expenses overall (so the HELOC loan will be easier to pay off) – seems like a double win!

There are two major downsides that I can immediately see: variable interest rate rises and home valuation. However for the latter, I am not sure whether it is really a problem. For all I know, solar panels would most likely increase the value of one’s home (seems to be logical anyway), which in turn means more flexibility regarding the floor of the HELOC loan if it is needed.

I am somewhat naive regarding how HELOC works so that is my main concern in this plan. So is this too good to be true, or have I missed something (I generally don’t believe in “too good to be true” hence why I am asking).
Naive re HELOC; I am one of the 3 kids mentioned in the question (19yo) so this is just for me to propose to my parents as an idea.

The Expert answers:

Not bad. I’ll answer with what I know about California (USA) – it may or may not apply to where you live.

If your power utility offers net metering on an annual true-up basis, then less sun in the winter doesn’t matter. You would theoretically build up a credit on your power bill in the summer, and draw it down in the winter.

If your utility offers time-of-use metering, where the rates are higher during the sunny hours, then you may not need to size your system so large.

The value for sunlight hours – was that “peak equivalent sun,” intended for sizing solar systems? In the winter here, the sun is out for 10 hours, but the equivalent sun is only about 2 hours, when dawn, dusk, and overcast weather are taken into account.

If your utility is set up such that they will never pay you cash for power, then it’s pointless to size your system so large that you might generate more than you use over the course of a year. This is in fact how the utility works where I live. The first year that our system was installed, we generated $80 more electricity than we used. We didn’t get a check for it, the balance was just set back to zero at the end of the year, as a donation to the grid.

What you should do is ask a professional installer to look at your house and make a quote. They will probably know about the financing angle, too. Then decide whether it’s truly a value, or whether they’re trying to do a sales job on you.

How would I be categorized politically?

I support unborn rights and would support a pro-life amendment to the constitution, with the only acceptation for the mother’s life.

I would abolish the department of education because it’s a local and state level responsibility.

I support the right to bear arms, concealed weapons licenses, hunting, stand your ground laws, etc.

I support a 2 strikes and your out drunk driving law.

I support a his body his choice law banning infant circumcision unless it is to treat a legitimate medical condition.

I support the decriminalizing of marijuana because it is less harmful than alcohol.

I think the drinking age should be 18 to match the age of adulthood.

I think it is of the highest urgency to become and stay energy independent.

I support nuclear power and increasing the number of nuclear power plants across America.

I would push the auto makers to make electric cars available for drivers who want them.

I would set and push for goals of energy independence, curing cancer, and paying down the nation debt.

I oppose the endangered species act because it has failed to protect one species and has only given government control of people’s land.

I would raise the levels of fines on employers hiring illegal aliens.

Homeland security should only be used as an anti-terror agency and criminal law enforcement should be handled by other agencies.

I don’t believe there is such thing as a gay marriage and think we should give them the same privileges that comes with marriage but call it something else.

I think capitalism is the greatest antipoverty tool the world has ever seen and encourage the economy, not put outrageous taxes on it.

I don’t believe humans are warming up the Earth but I think we need to clean up some of the messes we are making such as air quality.

I believe in a small federal government. I don’t think the general public should even notice the federal government unless they visit their local military recruiter or post office.

No more ethanol, it causes higher grocery bills and less MPG.

I support Boone’s plan.

I support the rights of nudists to live their lifestyle on their privately owned property without the government telling them they must put clothes on.

I am a Christian but don’t think it’s the government’s job to push morality, I think morality must come from the people up. Not the government down.

I support net neutrality, and oppose bandwidth caps.

I would revert our copyright laws back to that of the Webster and Benjamin Franklin years: An item can be copyrighted for 14 years, renewable once, then falls into public domain.

We allow men to go out in public shirtless. I support amending the law allowing both genders to do the same. One gender shirtless is discrimination. I support women’s rights to breast feed in public. That is the function of the breast. I don’t think anyone has ever been harmed for seeing a breast.

I think smokers should be required to pay their own way when they get cancer and heart disease. Not get public money to fight a self imposed condition.

I would allow people to own their social security accounts and allow them to invest in a Roth IRA within their social security account so the people may build a nest egg to retire on. Each person will own their account and congress may never dip into it.

I would make it illegal for credit card companies to raise interest rates, at will, with no delinquent activity: banning universal default.

Absolutely, no more national debt. No more borrowing.

I believe terminally ill patients should be allowed to take experimental drugs that have yet to receive FDA approval.

Lets get rid of the IRS, replace tax system with flat tax or national sales tax. The IRS and current tax code only exists to control people.

I oppose taxes on broadband internet access, sales tax on in items bought online, and regulation of online content.

I don’t believe our government is up to the task of providing national heath care and it’s much better off left in the hands of the private sector.

I think adults should legally be able to take steroids for body building if he is not competing in competitive sports.

Doer’s drive to clean the air
NDP leader wants to model California’s crackdown on vehicle emissions

By Mia Rabson
MANITOBANS could have more than just sunny skies in common with California if Gary Doer is sent back to the premier’s office next month. Doer marked Earth Day Sunday with a series of campaign promises to protect the environment, including forcing all cars on Manitoba roads to spew out fewer greenhouse gases. “We want to work using the California method on vehicle emissions,” Doer said in the backyard of a private residence in Wolseley. California set tailpipe emissions standards 41 years ago, and has long been the North American leader on the subject, including recent plans by the state to cut by 10 per cent the carbon content of gasoline sold in the state.
Cars sold or imported in California must meet that state’s emissions standards or they aren’t allowed on the road, and Doer wants to set the same standards here.
He said he believes the federal government should set a national standard for tailpipe emissions to ensure car manufacturers are forced to act.
“Having said that, just like California is not going to sit back and wait for Washington, we’re not going to wait for anybody else,” he said.
Doer said the tailpipe restrictions will not just be for new cars sold in Manitoba, but also include incentives for people with older cars to cut back on emissions. “We believe carrots are the best in this regard,” said Doer.
Doer repeated his pre-election pledge to pass a law requiring Manitoba to meet its greenhouse gas reductions targets under the Kyoto Protocol by 2012. But, for the first time, he said he’d like to meet that goal with actual reductions, not by buying credits from other jurisdictions that have fewer emissions or have

Top

cut back more.
Manitoba’s Kyoto target requires a cut of 2.3 megatonnes of greenhouse gases. The province currently emits about 20 megatonnes a year, more than one third of which come from vehicles.
Other promises in his environment platform include building renewable energy sources for the communities in Manitoba that don’t have access to hydroelectricity, and requiring all landfills to capture emissions.
Curtis Hull, project manager of the Manitoba-based environment crusader group Climate Change Connection, said overall the Doer environment platform “looks promising.”
But he said he’d like to see more initiatives to get people out of their cars in the first place, including investments in public transit, particularly in rural Manitoba, and higher gas taxes, though he acknowledged that is a hard sell.
“Increased gas prices won’t be popular, especially at election time, but when it comes to getting people out of their cars, that’s the big one,” said Hull.
Doer was joined at the microphone by Lloyd Axworthy, who was once the senior federal Liberal in Manitoba and is now the president of the University of Winnipeg. Though Axworthy’s presence implied he was endorsing Doer’s campaign, he said that’s not true.
But he did laud Doer for showing leadership on climate change in Canada.
“I’m not here in a partisan way, I’m here because as a citizen of this province I think it’s important we continue to build on what’s been accomplished,” said Axworthy.
Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard, who also made environment announcements Sunday but didn’t get the boost of Axworthy’s presence, sniped that he thought it was funny that Doer felt the only way he’d get credibility for his environment announcement was by having a Liberal present.

The Expert answers:

I think it’s great, our leaders really need to get serious about climate control if we’re ever going to make a real difference. I live in Manitoba so you know that I’m not just blowing smoke when I say that I support this, I realize that I will probably have to make some sacrifices in order to make a difference, but if it helps the environment than it’s worth it.

I think that Doer has done an excellent job his last two terms in office. Manitoba was in a pretty sorry state when he got a hold of it, with huge unemployment rates, a bunch of cutbacks on healthcare, and the firing of over a hundred nurses among many other things. And I think that since Doer has gotten into office he has done an excellent job of keeping his promises, and helping the environment. I sincerely hope that he gets reelected on Tuesday, I’m certainly planning on voting NDP.

Plus I have a hard time seeing the PC’s even promising to do half of what Gary Doer has already done for Manitoba’s environment.

Federal Tax Credit question?

What is a federal tax credit? The context of where I found it is:
If you purchase an energy-efficient product or renewable energy system for your home, you may be eligible for a federal tax credit.
Thanks

The Expert answers:

A tax credit (i.e. Home energy credit) offsets your federal taxes dollar for dollar.

A tax deduction gives you a taxes deduction (i.e. Itemized deductions) based on your tax rate.

So… A tax credit is more valuable than a tax deduction and should be taken, if you qualify!

Just what should Canada do to become more environmentally sustainable?

So to all you canadians out there, particularly people from vancouver, what’s the most important things we need to do to be more sustainable and what have we already achieved? In vancouver, we want to be the most sustainable city in the world by 2020. So I was wondering how far along we really are.

The Expert answers:

Run your cars, trucks and buses on natural gas (methane) instead of gasoline. It’s much cleaner for the environment, and Canada has GOBS of natural gas. The technology is already proven (my car has been running on natural gas since it was built in 1998), so it’s not hard to switch over. I’ve been paying just 93 CENTS per gallon to fill up, too (I live in Utah). You might just need some infrastructure for fueling stations. Not a big deal to do. Go for it!

Donald asks…

What are sustainable US and world population levels?

The world recently passed 7 billion people in terms of total population. Most conservation biologists consider this to be at least 200 percent over what Earth can permanently sustain. In any case, the human population and its negative footprint on Earth are continuing to rise and clearly threaten the stability of ecological, agricultural, and social, political, and economic systems worldwide.

If you were President, what global educational and family planning campaigns would you support in response to the world population crisis?

In relation to the United States, what is a sustainable population figure? How many people can America sustainably support, and what campaigns would you undertake to educate the American public about achieving sustainability in relation to population?

The Expert answers:

Technology has done wonders for us in the past, specifically when it comes to genetic engineering to produce larger food yields. However, it’s utterly ridiculous to place all of our eggs in the “technology will save us!” basket when the bulk of global population growth happens in undeveloped and underdeveloped countries who don’t have a shred of access to the technology available to developed nations.

What would I do?

1. Make certain technologies freely available. The idea that profit comes first in this situation is silly, especially with technology related to life necessities like food.

2. Increase access to education resources and training which will allow people to make informed decisions and gain access to more resources using the skills that they’ve acquired.

3. Begin a large scale campaign to increase scientific literacy among the public.

I wouldn’t fund additional family planning campaigns.

With lifestyle changes, more widespread use of existing technology, innovation, and alterations in land use priorities, the U.S. Can likely support a billion people sustainably. However, it’s important to note that most global population issues aren’t in the U.S., and many areas are already overpopulated.

Betty asks…

Does anyone know of a good car donation charity that goes towards promoting sustainable energy?

I live in Minnesota and have looked at options for donating my car which is a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am that still runs good except for the entire muffler/exhaust system came detatched and I am not willing to pay for it to get fixed. I’m having difficulty finding charities online that contribute to sustainable energy or something of the latter.

The Expert answers:

I dont know of any for contributing to sustainable energy,But Our Lady Of The Wayside helps with mentally challenged Adults perhaps you would reconsider where you would want your donation to help.(its tax deductible)
