Nancy asks…

Does Anyone Know Where I Can Get Eco Friendly Clothes?

The Expert answers:

Buy second hand clothes.

Michael asks…

Do you know an alternative detergent bar that is eco-friendly?

I mean an alternative detergent bar used in washing clothes that is ecofriendly and easy to prepare.

The Expert answers:

Not sure but you could try Johnson and Johnson website, DuPont website and other major chemical companies websites. There is a huge push for green chemicals and I’m sure they have some information somewhere on their websites. Good luck!

Lisa asks…

Are there any clothing lines that make eco-friendly,no sweatshop nice looking clothes/?

I heard about sweatshop in my history class. All the big stores, and little stores use sweatshops!
eek, i do not want to be wearing someone else’s sweat and blood for 67 cents an hour! and I would like clothes that’s good for the environment. I found a jeans that’s eco-frienldy but it was made with cotton, and we all know that immigrants and children are bending down now to pick cotton and pick the seeds for cheap labor so they can have a meal. Cotton is bad, unless you do it in your own garden by yourself. It doesn’t matter if they are from anywhere around the world,i don’t care about the price range. And if there are none in america please tell me a place where they have a lot of these clothing lines,so i can move there when i grow up. America is sooo evil, i was thinking of living in California but since that belongs to mexico, hell no.Thank you,and no silly answers please. if there are none, can someone help me learn how to make my own clothes. I’ll even make my own clothing line. Not like I want to but I’m desperate

The Expert answers:

American grown cotton is not being picked or processed by children. Look for cotton items that say “Made in the USA”. Double check the inside labels on clothing to make sure it doesn’t say ‘assembled in Bangladesh’ or Guatemala or some other foreign country. Look for linen, rayon or viscose if you want a non-cotton natural fiber.

To make your own clothes: check your school, YWCA, community center or local fabric store for classes in sewing and clothing construction. Try it, it’s a great skill and you’ll have clothing as individual as you are.

But remember if you make that conscious choice to not buy certain garments for political reasons (& that’s okay if you do): remember that 67 cents in a third world community with few resources and even fewer choices may be the difference between a whole family eating for a day or two or someone going to bed hungry. And in some poor countries if a child cannot contribute to the family’s welfare they may actually be sold or given away to face a life of cruel exploitation. (There’s still slavery in Uganda & other places in Africa and Arabia, as well as child & adult sexual slavery in many parts of Asia).

It’s easy for your teachers to make political judgments about real people they’ve never known in difficult circumstances they’ve never experienced — what your teacher might spend on fair trade coffee in a year would probably feed a family of four in most third world countries. It sounds like you are getting a big dose of anti-American propaganda as part of your curriculum. “Evil America” provides the majority of humanitarian food aid and emergency relief around the world, (even to North Korea who hates us). Did you know that America has also been the leader in providing funding and medications for HIV/AIDS treatment in Africa?

Here are some eco-friendly clothing lines:
Super cool Tom’s shoes are eco-friendly & they give away a pair of shoes to a needy child every time a pair is purchased. (Regular and Vegan):

John asks…

How do I start a club about environmental issues?

I am starting an environmental club at my college and i need ideas. How can i make it interesting? topics to discuss? how can i motivate my classmates to join my club? i want people at my college to start caring about the environment. I am myself a student, but I don’t where to start with my club to make my classmates care about these problems and i desire to get everyone involved. .

The Expert answers:

First of all you must become a role model by exhibiting a practical solution for our global energy problem. Once it is recognised as a solution, then others who see it will believe and would like to know how it is done and then a club will automatically start. Have a look at the practical solution that has been recognised and honored by the World Bank with a certificate and a knowledge grant:

Solar energy is green energy, clean energy and it is freely available during certain hours of the day and during certain months of the year. It all depends upon how we make use of this infinite energy.
Example: many of us misuse electricity during day time for LIGHTING the interiors of our homes even though free, bright and clean solar energy is available just across our windows and doors, when the sun is shining. Switching on the bulbs during day time is a criminal waste of costly electricity. The bulbs also contribute CO2 and global warming.

Example of savings of electricity that can be effected – one bulb/tube light of 40 volts burnt for 6 hours during day time (whether at home or offices or business complexes), consumes about 8 units of electricity in a month. If this ONE bulb can be switched off during day time, by 100,000 people, we can save 800,000 units of electricity in a month and in six months, when the sun shine is available, we can save 4,800,000 electricity units.
Supposing more than one bulb is switched off, use the above formula to calculate the savings and also how many thousands of tons of CO2 emission can be saved. That is the power of volume.

I am not asking you to live in darkness. Many of us need that one burning bulb to keep our interiors bright because we would have kept our doors and windows shut for various reasons like security, wind, dust etc., but still we need that burning bulb for reading etc.

I have a simple solution for giving you free energy for lighting your interiors. I am not talking about energy that is required for kinetic purpose like running a fan, oven, geyser etc., I am talking about that simple light that brightens the interior of your home. My following solution does not involve any nano technology or billion dollar investment. Anybody can do it with a little innovative mind.

SO, LET US “BRING HOME THE SUNSHINE AND LIVE IN A BRIGHTER WORLD”. How?

When the sun is shining outside your windows, locate the spot where maximum hours of sunshine will be available. Take a plastic chair, a pillow, a few pieces of waste thermostat or cardboard and a mirror measuring 1′ X 2′; open one window, keep the chair in the sunshine, pillow on it and the mirror on the pillow. Keep adjusting the angle of the mirror till such time that the deflected sun shine gets inside your home and hits the white ceiling and fine tune the same by keeping small pieces of card board behind the mirror to maintain that angle. LO, AND BEHOLD, YOUR ROOM IS BEAUTIFULLY LIT UP WITH NATURAL LIGHT FROM THE CEILING – FREE FOR YOU.
This is a practical solution for a global problem and everybody can become innovators for helping the world reduce global warming and to get free lighting with the help of infinite solar energy by switching off as many bulbs as possible. Think of the benefits that would accrue by way of savings in terms of investment to generate that many MW of electricity, how much of fossil fuel, coal or water that would be used for generating that much of electricity, investment on machineries, transmission cost, labor, etc. Etc. And also how much of CO2 can be reduced, they have nth value.
Please publish this simple solution or send it to as many people as possible.
This solution has been awarded a Certificate of Honor and a knowledge grant by the world bank – project U-SEE # 585 of IDM 2007 competition. Browse,

Daniel asks…

What do Bush and the House Republicans have against Alternative Energy?

House shifts $16 billion toward renewable energy!
Republicans called it a “no-energy bill” because it lacks new drilling incentives, and they derided the new emphasis on renewables as “green pork.” The White House threatened to veto the bill on concerns that it could boost energy prices.

Didn’t Bush say that the USA is addicted to oil and needs to find alternate energy sources? Or was he just refering to ethanol?

David asks…

The Catastrophe economy… Capitalism and the endless “Bad News” cycle?

Now that Capitalism/Corporatism has become the dominant world economy… we seem to have a steady stream of disaster. Let me explain..

Japan… the fact is Nuclear power is not safe or clean.. Earthquakes happen. This just as easily could have happened in California or Toronto or anywhere else.. The energy Companies and their iron grip on public opinion have done everything it can for 40 years to stop “Alternative energy” from moving forward… That is “Corporatism” dominating the power landscape.

We all know that Industry gets rid of competing industry whenever it can… that’s an accepted form of Capitalist Fascism… So it seems we are stuck with this now, which is to say we can expect Oil Spills, Political unrest, Nuclear Disasters, Wars, Suffering on genocidal levels to continue as long as we indulge in the exploits of “absolute” wealth and power which is what the current form of global capital is creating…

Instead of efforts to equalize living standards, the exact opposite is taking place.

Infinite Growth vs Finite resource is unsustainable without a shrinking of the population…
is that the plan ?
Really I’m the Epitome of ignorance? And here I thought I was just a moderately intelligent person with a question about a larger issue… shoot.
Thanks for telling me.

The Expert answers:

– Japan… The fact is Nuclear power is not safe or clean

Umm. Actually the events go along way to proving that nuclear power is clean and safe. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal–media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:

Sandy asks…

Does America’s economy really affect the world?

Here in America, our news talks about how our current economic woes has brought down the markets all over the world. How does our economy affect the people of Australia? Do you feel the American downturn has affected Australia? It was our greedy bankers that made bad loans on real estate, it’s our oil greedy President who hasn’t supported alternative energy. I really don’t understand how this works and was wondering how the people of Australia feel about this statement.

The Expert answers:

I’m in the UK but the market in the US has had a massive effect on our financial situation here, When US mortgage lenders lent money to NINJA’s (No Income No Job, No Assets) on property of non standard constuction (Trailer Park type homes) they knew it was a risk, however a lot of this debt was sold off to other financial institutions around the world, when interest rates started to rise and people started to default on their borrowing and repossesions rose, UK banks found that the only assets that they had were on unmortgagble properties, which leaves them with a lot of bad debt, this in turn has a direct effect on the banks ability to lend to it’s Uk customers, and as each financial institution does/did not know how much bad debt each one of them had it limits the flow of money between them and seizes up the system, so thats why there has been the problems with Northern Rock, HBOS and Bradford and Bingley.
Ive not heard on our news about Australia being in trouble but certainly, Iceland, Germany and some banks in Italy so far.
If we hadnt had Tony Blair kissing George Bush’s Ass for 10 years then maybe the UK wouldn’t be in such a bad way now!
Vote well next month USA please!!

Sharon asks…

I feel left out all the time?

Hello, I’m a 17 year old Junior attending high school. I am the complete opposite of other guys in my class. I feel like they all have control over their lives, while I don’t. I feel that everyone else has something to do every weekend or day off, and I am stuck at home and play Call of Duty, or sit in front of some other screen from the time I get home from school (after homework of course), until bedtime. I can’t relate to other guys because our hobbies and interests don’t match. I love computers and computer hardware, and news about new technology and alternative energy and stuff like that, etc. Whenever I try to talk to someone about it, they give me the notion that they don’t care and that I am “too smart for them”. Lately I have felt that no one cares what I have to say. All the other guys talk about is sports, or Fantasy whatever. I feel that my problem is that I am too logical about things and I don’t want to have fun, but “I do want to have fun”. Many things other than technology bore me to death. Even my few close friends, I don’t find hanging out with them any fun. After a while they stopped calling me or texting me to hang out. Now the only time I feel like I socialize with other kids is by doing school work in class, which is the only place I feel comfortable socializing. Also, other people always want to work with me just because I am one of thr most resourceful and intelligent students in my class. After all, I get straight A’s. I am also about to attain the rank of Eagle in the BSA. Does this mean I have no self confidence outside of the classroom/work? Is my personality poor?

Also I have felt lately that all everyone else is dating or are about to start a relationship with someone. My luck in the past with girls has not been good with misunderstandings, awkward moments, and sadly broken friendships :(. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Alf9xqlsbnIRwwi1EBcQjC_sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100525132004AAr6On7) one of my old questions.
The girl mentioned in that question I was friends with for several years, but when I asked her out, all hell broke loose and we haven’t spoken to each other in 7 months (LITERALLY).

I am too scared to ask out any more girls after what happened. She reacted so badly that I feel like I will never have any confidence again. One by one, potential girlfriends are picked off bu othere guys, and the only ones left are undesireable (not becuase of looks but because they are shallow) or just dint want a relationship right now (i respect and understand that). I have one girl “friend” that I feel comfortable talking to, but even with that I barely see her enough anymore to make any ground with her. She has 3 AP classes and all honors class, and is almost always up until 3 in the morning finishing homework ( I don’t know how she does it but she does it somehow).

In the end I feel like no one can relate to me or actually enjoys speaking with me other than teachers or adults. I am too “smart” for the normal crowd, and I am too “un-involved” for the smarter, responsible crowd ( the good kids, like my one girl friend, used to be two…. 🙁 ). I feel, left out.
Help?

The Expert answers:

You know, I was never so deeply into hardware but my interests were in language and grammar. I felt so left out. I WAS left out. All the groups saying you’re too smart for them, people snickering?
I was lucky because I had a close knit group of friends who didn’t care that I loved English and History instead of other stuff. The point is that if you start acting like a friend, people will become your friends. It all starts from you. If you’re not okay with yourself yet, no one else will be either. If you like something someone else likes as well, go and talk about that.

But then again, it’s hard. When you really love something, that’s what you love.
You can’t have everything, but doesn’t anyone there in your school like programming?
No one likes games? No one likes computers?
Just don’t be too techy. I wish I had more advise for you but I went through the same thing, especially on the dating, even though my trouble was with boys.

Keep your chin up. And keep doing what you like to do.
Eventually you’ll meet people who like you because you like programing and hardware.

(BTW, with the girl with the AP classes, try texting, messaging, or giving a small gift, like an eraser, to make her laugh!)

Your Questions About Green Living

Thomas asks…

Do we also need to be wary of “Big Green” companies as well?

So far this election cycle, the alternative energy production and services industry has contributed nearly $800,000 to federal candidates, parties and committees, a figure much larger than the $220,000 it donated in the entire 2004 election cycle. It is on track to surpass the $957,000 collected by federal candidates, parties and committees from the industry in 2000, when alternative energy advocate Al Gore was running for president. Lobbying efforts by the industry peaked last year at $16 million. This number is likely to be surpassed, as the industry has already spent $11.3 million in the first half of this year.

http://www.fecwatch.org/news/2008/07/power-struggle-alternative-ene.html

And This From Nancy Pelosi’s website
The Democratic-led Congress is moving America in a New Direction for Energy Independence—working for consumers to lower gas prices, make America more secure, and launch a cleaner, smarter, more cost-effective energy future that creates hundreds of thousands of green jobs and reduces global warming.

http://speaker.gov/issues?id=0010
EDIT: Ghost – Things aren’t as black and white as you assume.

I did NOT say we shouldn’t look to alternatives.!
But since we will ALWAYS need oil for other uses, we need to get it from here.

Speculation does NOT affect the price nearly as much as the law of supply and demand.

Your Dems want to pass an “excessive” speculation act when they know it’s not the root cause.
THen…they will spend millions and have several subcommittees to determine what the definition of “excessive” is.
Totally unenforceable!

All the speculators have to do is carry their business overseas. Seems to be a theme with Democratic policies.
PS.

None of your calculations have any date or links to support them

The Expert answers:

Can you tell what is wrong with energy independence aside from the fact that there are people lobbying for it?

What is your solution, keep burning oil until we run out and our economy collapses because of it?

And if we want a short term solution, it would be to regulate the speculation on oil futures which is driving up the cost of oil past the issues of supply and demand.

If we get rid of all regulations on drilling, we might save 20 cents on gas per gallon 10 years down the line, so it is neither a short term or a long term solution to the problem, just a feel good measure to make it seem like congress is really doing something when it’s not.

Susan asks…

What are your thoughts on the energy saving light bulbs EU edict…….?

Today we are told on the news that we are all going to have to buy energy saving light bulbs, as dictated by the EU in Brussels.

OK, so they do save money by lasting longer, but the ones I have in my house are a lot less bright than the normal bulbs, also they take quite a while to actually come on.

Now my big gripe is, why is it that all of us in our homes be economising with electricity when shops have their spotlights on in their windows all night, advertising signs are on 24/7 and offices and government buildings are all lit up when no one’s working in them, shops have doors wide open in the winter letting all the heat out,and air con in summer with doors open.

Yes I understand that the fuels from Mother Earth will not last forever, and we have to do something about the situation of finding alternative methods of generating electricity in order that generations to come will be able to benefit.Shouldn’t people in position show the way by setting a good example to us all?

The Expert answers:

You will have to because they can make it a law which will force you to do whatever they think is good for you. The EU knows what is good for you better than you do. They are your nannies.

Since the bulbs are not as bright, you need more of them, which defeats the purpose. I use them only in multi-bulb fixtures or for lights that I want to leave on for a long time. Regular incandescent bulbs are best for reading. The energy efficient bulbs give off a high volume of low intensity light, regular bulbs give off a lower volume of higher intensity light.

Some lights have to be left on for safety and crime prevention, adverts get business. When ways are found to produce power that costs no more than present methods or is cheaper, then those ways will be used. Any attempts to legislate alternatives will likely result in more costly energy, which lowers the standard of living, causes unemployment and hurts people.

One way is to grow biofuels, using genetically engineered plants, but the nuts say no to genetic engineering. Tidal power is subject to storm damage and changes the environment. Wind power farms are ugly. Solar power arrays are ugly and change the environment. Hydroelectric dams change the environment. Fossil fuels damage the environment. Nuclear waste endangers the environment. The environmental nuts are opposed to all alternative power on a scale large enough to support our civilisation.

Their answer is to have fewer people, fewer things and for all to live in harmony with nature in a pastoral world. My answer is to continue to do what is needed, economise whereever feasible and keep trying to provide energy in better and cheaper ways so our civilization will continue to advance.

Donald asks…

Why is Sarah Palin skipping out on Alaska?

Just this past week, shortly after conducting a string of national TV interviews and skipping a state education conference, she was scolded by the Anchorage Daily News. “There are … low graduation rates, plummeting North Slope oil prices, proposals to build alternative energy projects, the gas pipeline,” the paper said in an editorial. “It’s time for the governor to refocus on Alaska’s needs.”

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081122/ap_en_ce/palin_s_popularity;_ylt=AhiWyjDVSm_mTcJt968u8i2s0NUE

The Expert answers:

Steven asks…

Is the Peak Oil question moot now?

“Over the past decade, a wave of drilling around the world has uncovered giant supplies of natural gas in shale rock. By some estimates, there’s 1,000 trillion cubic feet recoverable in North America alone—enough to supply the nation’s natural-gas needs for the next 45 years. Europe may have nearly 200 trillion cubic feet of its own.”

That sounds like good news. What about renewable energy? “Since there’s no longer an urgent need to make them (renewable energy) competitive immediately through subsidies, since we can use natural gas now, we can pour that money into R&D—so renewables will be ready to compete without lots of help when shale supplies run low, decades from now.”

That sounds like good news as well. We can stop subsidies for alternative energy and let R&D and the free market take over when they can make alternative energy affordable.

Does this now make the Peak Oil issue somewhat redundant?

http://naturalgasforeurope.com/how-shale-gas-is-going-to-rock-the-world.htm

The Expert answers:

Actually, in contrast to the “warmies” who post here on a regular basis(they are SO predictable), the discovery of large amounts of natural gas in the US is good news. So called “renewable energy sources” like wind and solar are not viable due to the high costs, and poor technology which makes them very inefficient. Nuclear energy is an excellent means of generating electricity, however the current administration would never allow a new nuke plant to be built in the US, and good old Harry S. Reed has made sure there is no waste repository in Nevada, although he recently lost a lot of influence in the state of Nevada, when he suggested that all the legal brothels should be closed…he said this in his address to the Nevada State Assembly, to an audience of state legislators, reporters, and concerned prostitutes who work in those targeted brothels…one of the more cynical, likely conservative reporters, stated that Reed was likely the highest paid whore in the room at the time…I am not sure I would agree totally, but he would certainly be near the top of the income curve for that profession.
Conversion of existing vehicles to CNG is both possible, and economically feasible, unlike what another answerer stated, and very likely to happen, and as CNG becomes available at the gas stations, we will see larger numbers of those vehicles on the road. Most of the large truck manufacturers already make comparable CNG engines so the cost of freight by truck would be relatively easy to convert, as the vast majority of the over the road trucks are replaced on a 5 year schedule, and the costs of a CNG engine are comparable to the diesels, and the mileage is comparable, but the operating costs are significantly reduced, so that could happen fairly quickly as the CNG became readily available at truck stops.
Overall, it definitely changes the basis for discussion regarding peak oil.

The Expert answers:

I don’t and never did. The hottest year on record is 1934, the third hottest year on record is 1921, if people look at history they will see that what is happening now is normal. Some of the global warming supporters have tried to convince people that the hottest years on record have occurred in this past decade but that is false.

Artgurl, no, you’re wrong: Funny you threw 2007 in there, the rest of the libs proclaim that 1998 is the hottest year on record, make up your minds.

If NASA says it is the hottest year on record I am going to believe them, not some liberal blogger. There are 200K more links just like that from reputable sources stating that 1934 was and is the hottest year on record.

Your Questions About Green Living

Joseph asks…

what are the most eco-friendly products for disposable plastic ware?

The Expert answers:

Plastic refers to a number of materials not neccesarily made from petroleum based raw materials. Starch and protein can be converted in a relatively simple industrial process into a plastic that is then extruded, molded and formed into different shapes that have similar properties to ‘plastic’ items. To be biodegradeable the material needs certain conditions (adequate moisture, nitrogen, micorganisms, pH etc) to get the process going otherwise it could just sit there.

Susan asks…

Good 2-tier affiliate program for eco-friendly products?

I’m looking for an affiliate program that focuses on selling environmentally-friendly products — recycled goods, energy-efficient products, and so on. I want a 2-tier program (so I earn more if I bring in more affiliates), and the program has to be reliable — no shady or sloppy practices of any sort. Prefer *not* to work with a service like Commission Junction.

The Expert answers:

There are lots of eco-friendly programs that avoid adware and do not allow bad practices.

Eastern Mountain Sports which you can find on Share a Sale for example has eco-friendly products and the Affiliate Manager doesn’t allow any of that nonsense.

Share a Sale also has a green section in their interface for eco-friendly products.

George asks…

What are some eco-friendly products that I can buy?(possibly cheap?)?

I’m very aware of global warming and I would love to help stop it.(Or even maybe reduce?)But my dad is big on not spending on things we already have.(lighbulbs for example)he thinks they will all cost more then what we’re getting.ya know?
I was just wondering if somebody could maybe givge me a list of cheap items that are ecofriendly.=]please and thank you!!!

The Expert answers:

The most eco friendly thing you can do is not buy things. I wouldn’t replace a bulb until it burned out. My logic is if I use it a lot it will burn out so I will save money by replacing it with a CFL, if it takes 5 years to burn out, I didn’t use it much, so I wasn’t wasting much energy. Look at the consumable items you use, those are items you have to buy every week or month. Try to replace them with reusable items or at least recycled content. For example I use cloth towels and napkins in my kitchen, but sometimes I have a need for paper towels, so when I buy them I get recycled paper, same with toilet paper and tissue. If you are still in school you can get everything you need made from recycled content.

I big on conserving and reducing waste. I look for ways to conserve energy, make use of natural light, make my home energy efficient etc. I find that food waste can be cut dramatically with a little planning, I pay attention to packaging and buy very few processed foods. I plan a menu and shop with a list. I buy local and organic as much as possible and use the bulk bins for a variety of items.

Many of us automatically buy clothes at certain times of year, yet we have more clothes than we need. I have a clour scheme to my wardrobe, so it all coordinates and I only replace things when they are worn out. So, for example I have 5 pairs of jeans, I will never have more. I decided that is enough to last me a almost 2 weeks without doing laundry. That is still probably more than I need. So before you shop count how many items like jeans, shirts etc. To see if you really need any more. Also look at the color of items that you have but never wear and don’t buy anything without trying it on and looking at yourself in the mirror.

Chris asks…

Why should public business’ take their profits and spend it on making a more eco friendly product?

We’re having a debate about wether or not public business’ should spend their profits on making a more eco friendly product in order to help the environment. Thus, what is a good argument on why public business’ should take their profits and spend it on making a more eco friendly product?

Thanks in advance 🙂 & 10 Points to Best Answer.

The Expert answers:

There are a number of reasons why a self-interested public business will serve its best interests by investing in eco friendly products:

1) societal approval – having a great reputation as a corporation is very good for business. Having a bad reputation is bad for business. Example being walmart where they have been hurt financially by their bad reputation b/c many people refuse to shop there. Think about how toyota’s reputation improved after launching the prius hybrid. This not only translates to high sales of its hybrids, but also higher sales of all of its products!

2) great for recruiting employees – especially younger employees under 40, who really want to work for a company that is eco friendly. Many of these folks will be the most talent folks so anything a company can do to improve its image will help it recruit the best employees.

3) eco friendly is more accepted in europe. An eco friendly product will do very well in many european and overseas markets where consumers want this.

4) eco friendly usually means sustainable by definition. Meaning unlike other types of products, there should be no problems securing these basic materials for production. Compare this to petroleum, which has very high cost variability and an uncertain future.

5) government regulatory environment. Some eco friendly processes that reduce carbon emissions may eventually help the company to save lots of money if the us government passes a carbon cap and trade scheme, as has been done in europe.

What are some imperative and current issues in politics?

Hey everyone,

I have a paper that I need to start soon and for it, I need to look at a current and imperative issue in politics. I need to develop a thesis analyzing how the thinkers we have studied Plato, Rousseau, Karl Marx and Carl Schmitt would have thought about it.

I was hoping to stay away from US, environmental or economic politics since they are such broad topics and concern myself more with global or humanitarian issues.

Anyone have recommendation of a current issue in politics?

Thanks!

Michael asks…

need help on a relgious question?

In the ancient goddess traditions, the Earth was seen as the body of the goddess and as such the Earth was considered sacred. Nature was seen as a living, spiritual force, which is often not the case in the major religious traditions. Do you think that the lack of a feminine aspect to God has helped lead us to our current environmental crisis? Do you think that re-introducing a feminine aspect to religion might help in solving some of the environmental issues we are facing?

The Expert answers:

No, though you are on to something.

Far too much emphasis has been made on the ‘gender’ of divinity. When monotheism took hold, that deity took on characteristics of the masculine because the cultures where monotheism flourished were patriarchal in nature. These cultures were the ones who ended up taking over the world leading to the environmental catastrophe we’re now facing.

It is easy to wonder and point to what is missing and assume it is the reason behind these changes. It is tempting to consider the absence of the feminine in the divine and make judgements based on that. I think you’ll find that when exploring the issue you’ll see that the distinction between us and them (pre-agricultural indigenous cosmologies) is more related to the whole nature of the human experience than it is with the gender identity of the divine.

Religion is an attempt to supernaturalize the human experience.

Naturalistic worldviews and indigenous cosmologies tend to consider life as something cyclical. We live as part of the environment and our death is often seen as giving life to other things which can in turn give life to us. Such is the circle of life.

Agriculture changed all that. It was no longer the case that the environment was something we belonged to as suddenly everything belonged to us. Humans decided what animals were food and even what animals could eat food. Humans suddenly decided who should live and who should die and invariably humans chose to only allow those who directly benefited humans to live and saw the rest as competitors who should die. Actually, let me clarify. Humans didn’t decide to live like this as evident by the number of indigenous tribes still around who clearly do not share this attitude like the Kalahari Bushmen or the Piraha of the Amazon. Only one tribe started to live this way, a particular group of Anatolian farmers who lived about 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent.

Also living nearby at the time was a group of Semitic shepherds who watched these Anatolians with great interest. “That’s insane,” they said, “how can they have such knowledge of good and evil of who should live and who should die? This is the knowledge of the gods! Surely they will die for this land is a paradise and takes care of us as we have always lived as one with the forests. They can’t do this forever by destroying the forests because the forest is what feeds us all.”

Agriculture allows for a food surplus which will always result in an increased population which requires territory expansion allowing for more food production in an ever increasing cycle. This also meant the Anatolians eventually began to pressure the Semites and as you can imagine, there were many incidents of the farmers killing the shepherds. In fact, the same story repeated itself all over the world as the agriculturalists expanded their reign by killing or assimilating any other tribe along its path. Cain is still killing Abel even today.

There is only one thing that could justify this behaviour by these agriculturalists, many of whom clearly saw the destruction they were causing. The only way they could possibly have the authority to do this was from the authority of authorities — the most authoritative entity imaginable, the creator of everything. Read Genesis 1 again. This story is not about how everything was created, if it was, it would have been more detailed and, you know, correct. It was all about establishing the authority because by Gen 1:28 that entity is giving us the authority or command even to take over the world. This is not something indigenous peoples even consider.

Living in complete disregard for the environment left its toll on the psyche of the agriculturalists. No longer did they see themselves as part of the cycle, they saw themselves as separate from it and more temporal. If they weren’t part of the cycle, the only value is in eternity. Compare the Green Man to Jesus. The Green Man dies and is born again year after year with the seasons representing the cyclical nature of life and death. Jesus died once and was raised again once and only once so we could live forever in heaven! Thus changing a cyclical worldview into a linear one. Believing they’d live forever is the only consolation for living in a way so destructive to the environment.

And that is why religion is so bad. By supernaturalizing the human experience, they can’t possible consider and value humanity’s place within the natural environment.

Adam and Eve and the Agricultural Revolution
http://www.noonespecial.ca/adam-and-eve/

Edit: Look at “An Old Priestess”‘s answer. She thinks the point of the ‘war’ was between war-gods and goddesses? Why? Too much emphasis on gender identity, not enough on history and cause and effect.

Question about New Zealanders, Kiwi attitudes, politics, values and other socieitial issues?

1. Why do New Zealanders feel that Australians are better off when they really aren’t?
2. Why do New Zealanders aspire to have a conservative government?
3. Why are New Zealanders so hostile to such things and liberal ideas such as the Emmissons trading scheme, anti-smacking law and other humanitarian liberal ideas?
4. Why are they so tight-arsed about liberal ideas realating to social and economic issues?
5. Why are they so tight-arsed realting to giving thier taxes to needy people who are unemployed when some are really needy?
6. Why do they feel they must have a tough on crime approach like 3 strikes when they have some of the safest streets in the world compared to larger countries such as Australia (who has even softer laws and a higher crime rate too), Canada, UK and USA?
7. Why do they have such an inferior complex and have a chip on shoulder?
8. Why do they think that Australian Government policies are any better when all they do is cause lots of harm to Australians too?
9. Why are New Zealanders so unpatriotic about their own country and then come to Australia and think it so great and are therefore patriotic about Australia which Australians don’t even go on about?
10. Whats up with the kiwis negative attitudes?
11. Why do New Zealanders constantly think that their government tells them what to do when the similar, if not the same issues with Aussies goverment also tells us what to do therefore making australia also a nanny state?
12. Why do New Zealanders hate the idea of an Anti-Smacking law and water restrictions even though it happens in Australia?
13. Why do New Zealanders feel that they must have the same wages and same tax rates as Australia?
14. Why are average Australians far more liberal than the average New Zealanders about alot of social and economic issues?
15. Why do New Zealanders feel they must have the same strong economy as Australia?
16. It complexes and confuses me why they continue to come here even though we have serious water and environmental problems and can’t sustain our environment with our current population, surely they have no right to come here and whats up with them automatically being accepted as they are kiwis, shouldn’t they have to go through the same immigration procedure as any other immigrant and therefore requiring a visa to live in Australia, not make it an Automatic right, should we cut the string and make them apply like every other immigrant? The opposition was right by cutting australias immigration to like to eventually take only 30,000 instead of 300,000, its too many immigrants australia takes a year?
17. Why are New Zealanders so negative?

Please take the time to comment and opinionate on these issues kiwis.
EDIT:

18. Are New Zealanders just a bunch of ignorant, pig headed, arrogant, un-educated, idiotic and naive bunch of people and realise no matter when you are in this world, there will always be the same problems as at home, if not worse?
EDIT II:

I am sorry if some of this offends, but just currious.

The Expert answers:

Megan, I can tell you’re autistic, and that for some reason you’ve got an unhealthy obsession about New Zealand. It’s also clear someone has given you the bad spin about the place (probably some loserBogan from Queensland who’s never spent much time out of Australia) and that you make gross generalisations about people from places and apply value judgements.

Not everyone in New Zealand is the same, and has the same opinions and values and behaves the same. Does everyone in Australia pick their nose, talk about absolute nonsense all loud and crass and have little intellect? No of course not! So why on earth would you assume that every single Kiwi is negative, ignorant, pig-headed, arrogant, uneducated, naive, has a chip on their shoulder, etc?
Most people in NZ aren’t even interested in Australia. Some ignorant people are concerned about the brain drain created by Australians earning on average half as much again. And yes, NZ and Australia have an open immigration policy, if it stopped benifiting either country they’d stop it.
People are concerned about crime because the media sensationalizes it to sell more papers/airtime.

Why would you assume that issues and government policies such as the emissions trading scheme, anti-smacking legislation, 3 strikes law, welfare, etc. Have anywhere near 100% backing form the public, and not be hotly debated with about 50/50 support on either side?

You make too many gross black and white generalizations and assumptions about other countries. And until you stop, nobody will take you seriously.

P.S. I would agree that Australians are on the whole more liberal than New Zealanders, but it’s not by much. It’s a gross exaggeration to say Australians are far more liberal.

What are some good apparel websites for eco-friendly and cheap clothes that are good for farming?

I’m looking for good work clothes, but also things that are casual or nice. Hopefully not on the super expensive side, but I’m open to suggestions.

The Expert answers:

Goodwill and other secondhand shops are where i buy my clothing for farming-cheap, eco-friendly (as you are buying used thus reusing) and usually high quality. I take it you have never worked on a farm as the cloths are always casual and the work tends to ruin cloths-stains, rips, etc., pretty quickly

Mark asks…

What’s the most Eco-friendly shopping decision?

Hi, I need some advice on how to make the most Ecofriendly clothes shopping decision I can. I’ve recently went through a growth spurt (I am one of those unfortunate people who’s major growth spurt happened in college) and all my clothes are to small. I wish to replace them with environmentally responsible alternatives. From what I’ve heard, used or organic clothing is the best choice. However, being in a small area, the only second clothes store around is 45 minutes away and seems to only carry clothes for elementary students and grandparents (so it’s out of the question), and there is NO places that carry organic clothes anywhere remotely close to me. So I’ve been looking at online sites for used and organic clothes. My question is, is it still more environmentally responsible to buy used or organic clothes (who knows their may be some used organic out there 🙂 online even though it needs to be shipped, or would it be better to buy regular new/non-organic clothes at the nearest clothes store in my area (also happens to be 45 minutes away) Also, what fabrics are the most Ecofriendly, and which are the worst. If buying’ online is my best bet, does anyone know any good sites that sell organic clothes? (and they can’t be TO expensive, I am on a college students budget.:) ) Thanks!

The Expert answers:

It sounds like shopping online is definitely your best bet. Ecomall.com and HappyHippie.com are good places to start, both comprehensive directories of eco friendly products, including clothes and shoes.

The the most eco-friendly clothing fabrics are:

•Cotton
•Bamboo
•Hemp
•Ingeo (fermented plant sugars)
•Linen
•Lyocell (wood pulp)

And the ones to avoid are:

•Acetate
•Acrylic
•Nylon
•Polyester
•Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
•Rayon
•Triacetate

Mary asks…

Where can I find affordable organic/bamboo/eco-friendly/fair-traded or all over “green” clothing?

I’m having a hard time finding cheap (think college budget) clothing that also is good for the earth and for me. Thanks so much!

The Expert answers:

I’m on a similar quest. I’ve found a few items at a few places. Target has a new limited line with organic cotton. REI has a new eco friendly line, many items are on sale right now. I’ve seen a few items at a store called Steinmart.

You can go to treehugger.com or biggreenpurse.com and they have links to many clothes stores with eco friendly items.

The other cheap option is used or vintage. That is always a great choice. The resources have already been expended and you are saving items from the landfill. Another option to refresh your wardrobe on a budget is a swap party. You invite friends and have them bring gently used items they no longer wear and you swap with them.

My number one tip for conserving resources where clothes are concerned is to get your colors done. I have a color chart that I keep in my purse and it helps me select colors that I will look good in. Have you ever had an item that you think looks great, but you never where it, chances are it’s not a good color for you.

Susan asks…

Looking For Jeans/clothing that are Eco-Friendly?

Give your suggestions but I want to share something I found at the Levi’s Store that was a Pair of Levi’s and T-shirts made from Organic Cotton.

The Expert answers:

The first one is 100% certified organic jeans and the last three are nice high quality hemp jeans which will last a long while. I think its cool that the jeans at Levi’s is organic cotton but i would like to see hemp jeans available there as well.

I didn’t mention Nuclear, because it is already -in, not -alternative.

David asks…

Alternative Energy….?

why is alternative energy important?
why should we conserve it?
what is alternative energy?

The Expert answers:

Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

Alternative Fuels, also known as non-conventional fuels, are any materials or substances that can be used as a fuel, other than conventional fuels. Conventional fuels include: fossil fuels (petroleum (oil), coal, propane, & natural gas), & also in some instances nuclear materials such as uranium. Some well known alternative fuels include biodiesel, ethanol, butanol, chemically stored electricity (batteries & fuel cells), hydrogen, methane, natural gas, vegetable oil, biomass, & peanut oil.

Now alternative (or renewable) energy is a little different…

Renewable energy flows involve natural phenomena such as sunlight, wind, tides & geothermal heat. Each of these sources has unique characteristics which influence how & where they are used.

Short but sweet that’s the specifics of it. If you’re interested in using some form of alternative fuel or renewable energy in your vehicle or home, feel free to contact me. I live 100% off the grid on alternative energy and have converted many vehicles to run on biodiesel, ethanol, hydrogen and EV.

In fact I currently run 2 trucks, my home hot water heater, home stove and home generator on hydrogen and one car is EV. I offer step by step DIY guides to walk anyone threw the process if you’re interested. You can find them at

www agua-luna com
Hope this helped, feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions if you’d like assistance in making your first self sufficient steps, I’m willing to walk you step by step threw the process. I’ve written several how-to DIY guides available at www agua-luna com on the subject. I also offer online and on-site workshops, seminars and internships to help others help the environment.

Maria asks…

Do we want our Government forcing us to use fluorescent light bulbs?

Congress plans to phase out the use of incandescent light bulbs by the year 2014. While standard light bulbs cost about 50 cents, the spiral CFL sells for about $3. If the lamp is installed where it is frequently switched on and off, it will age rapidly. Under extreme conditions, its lifespan may be much shorter than a cheap incandescent bulb.

If a fluorescent lamp is broken, mercury will contaminate the surrounding environment, which leads to evacuation of the area.

Since fluorescent lamps produce a small amount of UV light, they can trigger problems among individuals with very high pathological sensitivity to ultraviolet light.
Fluorescent lamps with magnetic ballasts flicker and this flickering can cause problems for some individuals with light sensitivity, they’re problematic for some individuals with epilepsy, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, and vertigo.
I personally have a problem with the light flickering, as it triggers seizures for me.

And then we have the problem of disposal when it wears out/breaks.The disposal of phosphor and particularly the toxic mercury in the tubes is an environmental issue. Governmental regulations in many areas require special disposal of fluorescent lamps separate from general and household wastes. In some areas, recycling is not available. There will develop a need for a recycling infrastructure on the proposed bans of incandescent bulbs, as well as for the fluorescent bulb disposal.

The argument states that incandescent bulbs makes heat as well as light. A fluorescent bulb produces less heat, so it is much more efficient. A fluorescent bulb can produce between 50 and 100 lumen’s per watt. This makes fluorescent bulbs four to six times more efficient (as far as making light) than incandescent bulbs.

It makes one wonder if less energy efficient ovens will be another product ban congress will have to debate.
I’d like to hear other peoples opinions on this issue.
oikos-“Evacuation of the area, my eye.”

::evacuate as in, leave the area. according to the directions on the container, you must “air out and leave the premise” when the bulb breaks.

Why people fuss over environmental and peak oil issue and forget the most important issue: OVERPOPULATION ?

This is a fact that is often forgotten!!! We encounter issues such as global warming, pollution, oil depletion, food scarcity, clean water scarcity, urbanization while forgetting that what causes all this is that the world has 6.5 billion people nowadays!! if we only have 20% of the population that we have now, the earth will still big enough to sustain us humans and possibly renew themselves! Yet why this issue is not a hot topic, in fact hardly anyone ever support a movement to control our greed to breed…..
Josh: Having 2 kids is NOT a ridiculous idea. Just remember that if everyone thinks like you, the kids you create will have to live a harder life than what you have fighting for resources. Do you ever ask yourself why your parents made you?
jeff_bau: there may be enough room to fit everyone on earth spatially, but do you forget that each one of them has to eat and drink everyday, and if they are to live the american lifestyle then each one needs a car, a house, water, a bank account and a golf club membership. In order to survive, people needs FOOD and not liberty. That is why people live near markets or farms and not in antarctica with penguins. Nigerians don’t have more liberty than Americans yet they breed a lot faster. Before the fossil fuel-supported farming system, the earth population don’t exceed 3 billions because earth itself can’t support the amount of people we have now. If oil is depleted in the future, that will also mean a major starvation and it is guaranteed.
Richard E: Good insight in seeing the different circumstances that contribute to overpopulation. It is indeed one of the most difficult issue, and the way I see it is how human population increase when survival rate increase. But this cannot go on forever, and either we have to control ourselves or else the nature will, which seems likely to happen. But it just will not be a pretty sight…

The Expert answers:

Because it is not a sec- analysis of the problem. Environmental problems are unsustainable rates of resource extraction, to high rates of ecosystem degradation, or pollution beyond the regenerative capacity of our environment. (i think those are pretty much all categories.
Overpopulation is a political solution (and a very undesirable one at that), disguised as an analysis. It gears you towards only one solution: less people, instead of piecemeal solution of actual problems

And then there are some nasty, hidden questions, such as: Which people then should be allowed to live on? In what lifestyle? Your life style? The lifestyle of a Namibian? And how many of these people are allowed in our spacious utopia? What kind of people should that be? The higher the resource use, the lesser the people allowed on the planet.

Food has ceased to be a real problem, at least in terms of quantity. It’s the mechanisms of distribution that are failing. Demanding market reforms for the economically weak countries has proven to be disastrous

Funny thing on the side is that prosperous western countries, which use a lot of resources, often have very low reproductivity rates, whereas poorer countries, with low per capita use of resources have high rates of resource use. Children, in countries where pensions are non-existent, serve as you retirement fund. So do you choose for the people who pollute the planet the most, but who don’t reproduce so much, or for those with little impact, but who reproduce a lot?

who is going to participate in the global turnoff?

Global Turn-Off

* The 1st of February 2007: *

Participate in the biggest mobilization of Citizens Against Global Warming!
The Alliance for the Planet [a group of environmental associations] is
calling on all citizens to create 5 minutes of electrical rest for the
planet.

Home 5

People all over the world should turn off their lights and electrical
appliances on the first of February 2007, between 1.55 pm and 2.00 pm in New
York, 18.55 for London, and 19.55 for Paris, Bruxelles, and Italy.
1.55pm in Ottawa, *10.55am on the Pacific Coast of North America*.

This is not just about saving 5 minutes worth of electricity; this is about
getting the attention of the media, politicians, and ourselves.

Five minutes of electrical down time for the planet: this does not take
long, and costs nothing, and will show all political leaders that global
warming is an issue that needs to come first and foremost in political
debate.

Why February 1? This is the day when the new UN report on global climate
change will come out in Paris.

This event affects us all, involves us all, and provides an occasion to show
how important an issue global warming is to us. If we all participate, this
action can have real media and political weight.

Please circulate this call to your utmost ability to your network.

As long no one do anything to stop the population growth, then you can save as much energy you like.
The world population will be doubled in the next 60 years and nothing is done to stop that. Laws who allow max 2 child per family is a must NOW, even someone like it or not.

I think the climate is changed perceptibly year after year now. A small panic will spread
and the consequences are that more and more start selling their houses, because they
feel the time is running out faster than they are told.

We’ll see an unemployment as never before. Companies which produce too much have to produce
less and to follow the quotas they implement. The future will be a hell
