Linda asks…
What are some very eco friendly cars?
I’m looking for a very “green” eco friendly car that will allow me to leave the smallest global footprint. What are some of the cleanest cars out there?
The Expert answers:
The term “eco-friendly” is a fallacy. It doesn’t exist when talking about cars, since all cars damage the environment in some way or another. Even electric/hybrid cars require loads of CO2 emissions to be manufactured, shipped, etc.
Ironically, one of the most eco-friendly things you can do it purchase a used car. You aren’t increasing demand for a new car by purchasing used, and it’s already been manufactured, so there aren’t any additional pollutants from assembly and manufacturing. Get a 4 cylinder car, something that gets 30+mpg and drive conservatively. Inflate your tires properly, use cruise control, drive the speed limit: all of these factors will reduce the amount of gasoline you burn, thereby reducing your “carbon footprint.”

Laura asks…
buying a car looking for eco friendly cars all makes?
The Expert answers:
Any make of diesel car will prove to be eco friendly.
My own vehicle runs on vegetable oil, this is the same oil you buy from the supermarket to put in your deep fat fryer.
My engine is a 2800cc turbo diesel, it has less noxious output than the smallest most frugal production petrol engines.
The conversion kit cost me less than £150 and took about 2 hours to do myself.
The mot test centre are amazed at the ultra low readings when my exhaust is annalysed at mot.
The car runs quieter, smoother and will last far longer due to the lubricity of the vegetable oil.
The other big plus is the smell from the exhaust, very similar to cooking doughnuts.
The biggest plus is that it works out at about 50p/litre if bought at the supermarket (though wholesalers sell it cheaper in larger amounts) and brings some ammusing looks when you start to pour the bottles in to the tank in the carpark.
Rudolph Diesel invented his engine to run on peanut oil, Modern day diesel fuel is an horrendous concoction of chemicals blended and designed by the oil companies as a substitute for peanut oil.
You have to voluntarily state to the revenue office how much you are using and pay tax on it, how much you pay depends on how much you own up to using nudge nudge wink wink!.
There are a few diesel engines which are not suitable for this conversion but all will be revealed at dieselveg.co.uk
Give it a try, you will have far less invironmental impact than any production car and save quite a few quid doing it.
Regards

Would you rather drive one of those little eco-friendly tiny cars or a Hummer?
An SUV or a clown car?
I take the Hummer, I hope I don’t get a ticket from the “green police”
The Expert answers:
I like driving my Hummer over those ridiculous, death trap clown cars.
